1955: The Lord of the Rings (1955 radio series):

Adapter Terence Tiller briefly corresponded with Tolkien on what "accents" to use for the various characters in the second half of the programme. Tolkien asked him to avoid using "vulgar" English to represent Orcs, but said he could use intonation, articulation and tempo to make the Orcs sound nasty.[1]

1968: The Hobbit (1968 radio series):

The voices were treated radiophonically to stress the nature of the speaker. In the case of the goblins, a harsh and dissonant tone was chosen.[2]
