There are many ways Tolkien's works are referenced.
* Some prefer the [http://www.forodrim.org/arda/arda_ref.html ''Arda'' structural referencing format]. This is arguably the most precise referencing system, but beyond the comprehension of the average reader, because it relies heavily on abbreviations and chapter numbers (rather than names).
* Some simply write down the page number. This is even less comprehensible, because the page number may be in ''[[The Old Forest]]'' in one edition, and in ''[[The Council of Elrond]]'' in another.
