Hello! I am Edrastel, a long-time fan of J.R.R. Tolkien's works. I am one of the newer contributers to Tolkien Gateway, having joined on 20 December, 2015.
History
I was introduced to The Lord of the Rings through Peter Jackson's extended film trilogy. After watching all three films, I quickly wanted to read the stories on paper for myself. I started, of course, with The Hobbit before moving on to The Lord of the Rings itself, and after coming to the end of The Return of the King I was left wanting more. I went on to The Silmarillion, and afterwards to The Children of Húrin, and from there my collection of Middle-earth lore started piling up.
Some time around the year 2010, I began to play the online MMO The Lord of the Rings Online. From the very start I played as a roleplayer, though an amateur at first, on the server Crickhollow. My main character on that server in those days was the Mirkwood hunter Istelion before he took a deadly fall in Moria and couldn't be retrieved. Afterwards, I played as the Sindarin loremaster Edrastel. I went on a long hiatus before returning to the game on another server with a new account.
Currently
As of now, my collection of Tolkien's lore consists of these works:
- The Annotated Hobbit: Revised and Expanded Edition
- The Lord of the Rings (50th Anniversary One-Volume Edition)
- The Silmarillion
- Unfinished Tales
- The Children of Húrin
- The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien
- The History of Middle-earth (Complete Box Set)
- The History of The Hobbit (One-Volume Edition)
- Mr. Baggins
- Return to Bag End
- Tales from the Perilous Realm
- Bilbo's Last Song
- The Lord of the Rings: A Reader's Companion
- The Complete Guide to Middle-earth
- The Atlas of Middle-earth
- Parma Eldalamberon (Issues 1-7, 16, 20-22)
- Vinyar Tengwar (Issues 1-50)
- Quettar (Issues 1 - 40)
- An Introduction to Elvish
- J.R.R. Tolkien: Artist and Illustrator
- The Art of The Hobbit
- The Art of The Lord of the Rings
Nowadays, I play The Lord of the Rings Online on the Laurelin [EU-EN-RP] server as Edrastel or Sriva, mainly roleplaying in Bree or the lands about.
Opinions
- Balrogs did have wings in a sense, though they were not permanent or practical and were more of a means of intimidation.
- The term "half-trolls" refers to a cross-breed of Far Haradrim and Mordor trolls and not a slur for the southernmost races of Men.
- The first Orcs were bred from Elves, but by the time of the War of the Ring there were many breeds of Orcs descended from Men or boldogs.
- Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy was a large waste of potential.
Headcanons
- Arda was a round world from its creation, and the Flat-World Silmarillion is based on the Númenóreans' flawed conception of the universe.
- The Land of the Sun was in fact the western shores of Aman.
- The Haradrim developed their own legends and ideas concerning the cataclysms that followed the Downfall of Númenor.
- The Blue Wizards became highly influential in the fight against Sauron in the Far East.
- The Númenóreans' unjust treatment of the Haradrim is what led to the latter's lasting allegiance with Mordor.
- Azog was a boldog.
- Arda as a round earth would look quite different than the Arda we are shown in the Ambarkanta maps.
- Thorin's Halls were the ruins of Belegost or Nogrod, rebuilt and reoccupied by Thráin the Second's people.
