Hi, what did you not like in that article's analysis? shouldn't we mention that the name can be Sindarin, and if so, we don't know the words? Temp 08:54, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

:Well, at first I disagreed, but with the current reword it's fine. I removed the phrase "The circumflex ^ is used by Tolkien in Sindarin extra long vowels[2], but these words have not been attested in Sindarin."  because there are plenty of those in Sindarin, even with the û - Udûn, for one. But properly sourced, it's good. Note that we're still working on referencing, but we pretty much agreed on these. Keep up the work - don't be shy, go ahead and completely rewrite an article instead of adding a couple of sentences if you think it needs it. Even very minor characters like Gildor Inglorion or even Nob could have a very good article. -- 09:23, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

Things
How do you get those little boxes and such that say your name and have links to talk, profile, etc.? Breragor

:Just click on "edit" on those pages and see the code they are composed of (some combination of {{, | and ]] etc etc) Sage 00:05, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

::Or go here: Help:Signatures. But keep it within the borders of sanity, please. -- 08:24, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

Reading order
Hi again... I know new fans usually wonder about the reading order and I don't know if you ever thought about it. Now it just crossed my mind to make such an article about anyone interested. I plan to start such an article and I hope you have stuff to add. Sage 00:05, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

:I do have a newbie's reading order, actually. I give it occasionally on IMDb, where I'm a regular on the LotR boards.

# The Hobbit - purely for introductionary reasons
# The Lord of the Rings
# Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age - basically a summary of LotR from a historian's perspective
# The Third Age parts of Unfinished Tales (though The Drúedain and The Istari can be skipped for now)
# The rest of the Silmarillion
# The rest of Unfinished Tales
# The Letters

:I just don't have a clue what to call such an article. -- 08:18, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
Elvish database
I read somewhere that the creation of a Tolkienian wiktionary was one of the ambitions of this wiki. Check out my first attempts. Sage 16:09, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
Template
I like it. My only concern is that perhaps references are overloaded and I would point your attention to some minimalism. There is no need to see everywhere "J.R.R. Tolkien" and "J.R.R. Tolkien, Christopher Tolkien (ed.)" again and again in almost every reference. I mean people knows who wrote them. After all, the wiki is about Tolkien.<br>
I am telling this because in a proposed guideline it was (by you?) mentioned that well-known facts need no referencing (like that Bilbo was a Hobbit). Same perhaps would apply to the References themselves.<br>
Of course overly formality is a respected option. Sage 13:06, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

:It can be a bit over-the-top, of course. But my main goal with always including the author was meant for the secondary and semi-secondary works. Originally, I favoured just doing Book, "Chapter", but I think that got expanded at one of the meetings.

:"Vinyar Tengwar 45, page 24" says nothing to anyone who doesn't have VT (and even to people that do). When JRRT wrote it, it must be made clear. When someone other than JRRT wrote it, that must also be made clear. Just my thoughts. -- 13:24, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Template:VGC
I put in the talk page of the template while I called it VGC. Also, I put in the publisher as a way to substitute the author found on template:HM. --Pinkkeith 22:40, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

:I read the talk pages after I edited, and wanted to respond, but Safari left me. We don't have a standard (yet) citation. Last year, I tried to get some consensus on the matter, and we sorta formulated a couple of things, but they were shelved for a while; let's just say there was a frost in Spring, or a blight in Summer.

:As for more games; for that to work, it's best to simply create links to sections, such as in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (video game)#The Shire.

:Also, keep a couple of things in mind. While chapter summaries can go in present tense, character pages (such as Amartiel) would have to be past tense. Also, avoid contractions like "isn't".  -- 22:48, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

Witch-king
You said you needed a summary for our new Featured Article ;-)

The Witch-king of Angmar (before Second Age 2200 - Third Age 3019, March 15) was the chief of the Nazgûl, King of Angmar, and Sauron’s great captain in his wars. A wraith, the Witch-king of Angmar was nearly indestructible, a terrible warrior, and a cunning strategist. As predicted by Glorfindel he fell by the hand of a woman, Éowyn, in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields and his death marked the beginn of Sauron's downfall.

It's taken from the article for the greatest part but I added the last sentence about his fall.  - Eldarion Telcontar 21:08, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

:Like it. I really had one wish: that it included Glorfindel and Eowyn. I am going to change that date around, though. And properly credit the image ;P -- 21:42, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

Re:Songs
I will consider it. And thank you for the "poem" installation, i didn't knew it existed. As for Khazad-Dum, It is spelled so in Summoning's CD. However, I've added the line (-). Originally it is written "Khazad Dúm" <br>mthomas 07:53, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

:Then I'll move it to Khazad Dúm (song) for consistency. -- 08:52, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

New Articles for Battle for Middle-earth 2
May i have permission to create several articles about Battle for Middle-earth 2? For Example, "Dwarves in  BFME2", that analyse the Dwarven force, and its accuracy in Tolkien's writings or its differece from it. Another example is "Maps of BFME2" that states and describes every map in the game and if it has differences from the original one (Forlindon in the game-Forlindon in Tolkien's writings). - mthomas 16:26, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

:Nope. That's for a section "Portrayal in adaptations" in Dwarves proper, Forlindon, or maybe a section "Differences from the books" in BFME2, detailing changes in geography. -- 16:31, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

"Grelvish"
The phrase on my user page was designed to frustrate you, but I deemed it dumb and therefore took it off my user page. It said, roughly, "This is designed to frustrate you, It uses both Sindarin and Quenya, Use it to frustrate others." However, I took it off  because nobody will take the time to translate it. LotRfan01 00:16, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

:I actually took some time, but gave up when nothing made sense. -- 15:48, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Multiple language words
If they are unrelated languages, I separate them with ----. Related identical words like aran are commented together. I still struggle with an easy readable layout Sage 11:38, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

:I was thinking sort of a wiktionary approach, is that a good idea? (Aran needs cleanup, btw). -- 11:42, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

Calendar
As I'm working on the events in Arda I have created a Google Calendar in order to keep track of the many events in different years. I inserted the events between April 2009 and March 2010 (unfortunately Google doesn't offer a Shire Calendar^^) and included the year in the description (e.g. "3021 - Samwise returns to Bag End").
Here comes the address.
I think that it could prevent us from losing track, couldn't it? :)
-- Eldarion Telcontar 21:33, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

:That's a good one. It certainly helps you keep track of everything. -- 21:45, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

Decipher Cards
yes. you can see it here.

Oh, and i have a collection of Gimli's cards (around 20) each one with different attributes and names (Gimli-Lord of the Glittering Caves/Gimli-Faithful Companion for example). Shall i upload them? (In the To-do-list is written that every Decipher card shall be uploaded. If so, we can take them form here. mthomas 11:48, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

:Okay, didn't know Thorin III had one. But Fror and Farin are NOT the characters from the Appendices, so I've removed those pictures from the articles. -- 11:47, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

::ok. and what about the other cards? mthomas 11:48, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

:::Well, a scaled down version of the full card can be done? We do need a Fairuse-Decipher template for it, though. They're apparently (c) by NLP (New Line?), TE (Tolkien Enterprises) and Decipher. -- 11:50, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
::::What do you mean by "scaled down"? we can place it as a card or only the image. the images resolution is 350x400.mthomas 11:52, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

:::::I thought of uploading the images scaled down to about 75%. But since several other sites have them at 100%, I don't think it will be much of a problem fair use-wise. I think it's a better idea to categorize the decipher cards under their image set, rahter than what characters are included. -- 12:22, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

::::::intersting. let me know if you have ideas of sub categorizing. If you want to upload images, i've given you the link.mthomas 12:26, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

:::::::Well, look at here. If we categorize them as "Category: Images from Reflections" or something (maybe "Images from Reflections (Decipher cards)"?), that way we can make the individual set pages redirects to the category. -- 12:30, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

:::::::Good. I'll try to contribute.mthomas 12:42, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Rollback
Dear Ederchil,

I want to make a question: How can I get rollback rights (if there are any)? I am already a rollbacker in another wiki, Halopedia (www.halo.wikia.com), and I would like to know how can I obtain these rights here
Thanks for your time,

--<tt><font color="#7BA05B">Odysseas-Spartan</font><font color="#4B5320"><font size="5">53</font></font></tt> 14:07, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

:Well, we don't just give out rollback rights here. I've got rollback rights on several wikia's too, but those were given to me after I actually did something about vandalism.  We're a very small-staffed wiki project, but  any vandalism is quickly reverted by sysops. -- 14:14, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

::When you say a small-staffed wiki project, how many do you mean? Of course, I don't expect to have the same community as Wookieepedia but I believe we are many. Am I wrong? Finally, how can someone become a Featured Gatekeeper? I this something like the User of the Month? I don't plan to nominate myself, I want to know.--<tt><font color="#7BA05B">Odysseas-Spartan</font><font color="#4B5320"><font size="5">53</font></font></tt> 18:58, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

:::Well, we have two sysops - Hyarion and me, and for the rest, its users. We might expand on that in the future, but for now, it's sufficient.
:::We don't have any guidelines for Featured Gatekeeper. Yet. It's one of those plans that never really got off the ground. -- 19:31, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
Tengwar
In some articles I have added such a "disclaimer". I think they were removed by someone or in others I forgot to add. Thanks for reminding me. Sage 20:38, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

:I'm thinking something that is unmissable, much like the other templates. -- 20:41, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

Btw I was surprised that you had in hand the complete sources about the Gondolindic Runes. Do you actually possess these copies, or found any online references? How come you know the source about almost anything mentioned? That's impressive! That article would need some more exact sourcing Sage 09:36, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

:I only have PE15, and the other refs are mentioned there (but not precise). I don't have the Mallorn issues, but I've ordered them. -- 09:46, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

TSR
Morning! :) Long time no talk. I am in the process of founding Tolkien Society Romania, along with a friend, and that's one of the reasons my editing here on TG has been done sporadically. We want to launch the website and have our first meeting as fast as possible, since it is already exams period and then the summer will come, the members will go back home for the holidays. Unfortunately, as I was warned by one of the guys at Tolkien Society, websites have a way of taking longer to complete than we are expecting.

And here comes my question. I was wondering if I could get "inspired" from what I wrote here to form a few articles on the TSR website. To make things clear, I would get inspired strictly from what I wrote. I do plan to continue in the future to write both for TG and for the TSR website and NOT the same stuff. So it won't be copy there paste here and vice versa. But for now there's a lot going on, my time is very limited and I am trying to launch the website with as few blank pages as possible. It’s the first Tolkien Society ever created in Romania and I want things to go as good as possible. And as fast as possible.

So, what do you think? I haven't had time to go through what I wrote yet, but if you want article names and such, I'll take a look and let you know.

Have a good day! :) ~~ Þelma 08:02, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
I don't know if you or Morgan already contacted Hyarion, but I've just emailed him about today's spam influx.-- 17:23, 1 February 2014 (UTC)

:Personally, I don't have a problem with that. TG's text is available under GNU FDL.
:I completely forgot to do that. I was too busy having flashbacks to a couple of years back. -- 17:32, 1 February 2014 (UTC)
:And don't hesitate to promote TSR. Make the page. -- 08:17, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

:: Oh, good! That's good news. I will promote TSR, both here and in the TS links page (I'll see if I can find more places). Alright, then, thanks a lot. :) ~~ Þelma 08:59, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
::Thanks for all your effort to undo the mess guys, and thanks for the e-mail KA. For the time being I've just shut off new account creation until we implement a stricter process. Although I'm having a hard time thinking of something stricter, manual approval wouldn't even work since it would be sometimes difficult to differentiate solely based on the username. --Hyarion 17:44, 1 February 2014 (UTC)

::: Almost there with the site. #:-S. You'll be in my "Thank You"s section. Do you want to appear as Ederchil or Olof? ~~ Þelma 10:34, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
:::You may be aware that I am pretty much computer-less at the moment (temporarily boring a PC right now). The way to fix this, Hyarion, is to change the CAPTCHA questions in LocalSettings.php. That will stop them until they figure out an answer. -- 10:54, 2 February 2014 (UTC)

::::Ederchil would be fine. I'm trying to keep those two "seperate". -- 14:59, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
List of Book that inspired Tolkien
Nauglamír
It is difficult to put link sources when I just created the page and was  begining to edit including informations, and you delete the page... Be more pacient. Otherwise it will be hard to help this wiki. Sigurd

I wholeheartedly apologize if I disrupted anything on the Nauglamír page. I changed just one word, since the first sentence under 'History' said, "The Nauglamír was forged by the Dwarves of Belegost out of the treasure of Nargothrond" when the Dwarves of Belegost are only mentioned after the slaying of Thingol. The Dwarves of Belegost deny aid to the Dwarves of Nogrod when those from Nogrod are led to believe their kinsmen were cheated and slain in Menegroth, and then wish to take vengeance on the Elves of Doriath. The Dwarves of Belegost had no part in the reforging of the Nauglamír and tried to dissuade the Dwarves of Nogrod from pursuing the 'vengeance' that would lead to the Sack of Doriath. I'm new to the editing side of a wiki, so I apologize. Nimphedal 13:27, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

:Don't be, please. You're doing great and you didn't disrupt anything. It's just that I read all edits, and the overall state of the article before you edited was sub-standard. -- 14:00, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
:Couple of things:
* Add new messages at the bottom of the talk page. They go in chronological order from old to new.
* The entire concept is vague. "Books that inspired Tolkien"? Inspired him on what? To write a book? To become a philologist? To write an alternate mythology for England? To write a specific element?
* As I said, sources. The only source you list is a summary of his personal library, without explaining how this book being in his library inspired him. Unless you have a specific sources that explicitly says Book X inspired him to do action Y, it's just speculation.
* No content other than a list. The introduction is essentially "Books that have inspired Tolkien are books that have inspired Tolkien".
* Basic layout and spelling. That's something that you should do before saving the page.
:As this is a vague and slippery slope (just as our existing train wreck Inspirations is), it adds nothing at the moment. Without addressing all these points (apart from the first, naturally), I see no point in having it. -- 13:38, 1 March 2014 (UTC)

::Ah, okay, thanks. And since you're an admin, might I ask if there's to be a page separation in the eventual cleanup of the Sack of Doriath page? I thought the Sack of Doriath and the Second Kinslaying were considered separate instances as they took place three years apart, but maybe 'Sack of Doriath' is an umbrella term for both that I've not heard before. I only ask because the waning years of the First Age is something of a focus for me lately. Nimphedal 16:38, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
:Couple of things:
* Whatever. If you see the message works.
*  To put links, sources and more informations need time to included.
* I was working in that page and adding all informations. But is Impossible to do this when someone came and deleted the page... minutes after I began to write.
* So I think you have to whait some time before going to deleted a page. That is not the first time that you dont have paciense.Sigurd

Hi! Where did you find info on the exact publication years for Parma Eldalamberon? Wikipedia hasn't got much info, and the PE website is a mess (one of the reasons why I systemized the "public" info from its website here on Tolkien Gateway)... --Morgan 14:23, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

:I have issues 1-5 (see also here), and issue 6 had a review in Quettar 21. -- 14:28, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
May I ask why the images I uploaded are copyright violations? I personally asked the artist through deviantART. I asked through a note, so I can send you a printscreen or something. She told me that she does not mind as long as she is credited and it is not for profit. I also asked for these three specific images. --Sandy 15:08, 19 July 2014 (UTC)

::I have issues 1-8 (and 11, 13 and 15-18), and on that basis have corrected the publication years for #6 and #8. -- Mithrennaith 15:51, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

If I understand the case correctly, there is a database problem right now creating thumbnails. But can I still upload scaled down images for use on a page? --Morgan 16:08, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
:::My bad i just saw it. Thanks for the info! --Sandy 15:29, 19 July 2014 (UTC)

:Yeah, the problem is downscaling. If you upload an image of say 200 or 250px wide, it shouldn't be a problem (and in the case of headshots, the image doesn't need to be bigger). I really need to contact Hyarion about it, but I keep forgetting that. -- 16:29, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
::::I know, I have spammed you extensively today, and I'm sorry for that. I just want to be sure that this won't happen again. So, I created the page with the permission; Am I allowed to upload them now? And if so, in the template where it says "Permission for use on Tolkien Gateway" will it be automatically linked to the page I created or do I need to do something extra? Thanks again!--Sandy 15:53, 19 July 2014 (UTC)

::Is there any news about this, yet? I really want to go through and do this year's Amon Hens and Mallorns (or should that be Emyn Hen and Mellyrn?!) but I can't tolerate this thumbnail error! --Mith 12:55, 22 December 2009 (UTC)
:You need to add the template like you used to, but instead of DeviantArt, write Kimberly. -- 16:15, 19 July 2014 (UTC)

Spam

I don't know if you or Morgan already contacted Hyarion, but I've just emailed him about today's spam influx.-- KingAragorn  talk  contribs  edits  email  17:23, 1 February 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I completely forgot to do that. I was too busy having flashbacks to a couple of years back. --Ederchil (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 17:32, 1 February 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for all your effort to undo the mess guys, and thanks for the e-mail KA. For the time being I've just shut off new account creation until we implement a stricter process. Although I'm having a hard time thinking of something stricter, manual approval wouldn't even work since it would be sometimes difficult to differentiate solely based on the username. --Hyarion 17:44, 1 February 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You may be aware that I am pretty much computer-less at the moment (temporarily boring a PC right now). The way to fix this, Hyarion, is to change the CAPTCHA questions in LocalSettings.php. That will stop them until they figure out an answer. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 10:54, 2 February 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

List of Book that inspired Tolkien

It is difficult to put link sources when I just created the page and was begining to edit including informations, and you delete the page... Be more pacient. Otherwise it will be hard to help this wiki. Unsigned comment by Sigurd (talk • contribs).

Couple of things:
 • Add new messages at the bottom of the talk page. They go in chronological order from old to new.
 • The entire concept is vague. "Books that inspired Tolkien"? Inspired him on what? To write a book? To become a philologist? To write an alternate mythology for England? To write a specific element?
 • As I said, sources. The only source you list is a summary of his personal library, without explaining how this book being in his library inspired him. Unless you have a specific sources that explicitly says Book X inspired him to do action Y, it's just speculation.
 • No content other than a list. The introduction is essentially "Books that have inspired Tolkien are books that have inspired Tolkien".
 • Basic layout and spelling. That's something that you should do before saving the page.
As this is a vague and slippery slope (just as our existing train wreck Inspirations is), it adds nothing at the moment. Without addressing all these points (apart from the first, naturally), I see no point in having it. --Ederchil (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 13:38, 1 March 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Couple of things:
 • Whatever. If you see the message works.
 • To put links, sources and more informations need time to included.
 • I was working in that page and adding all informations. But is Impossible to do this when someone came and deleted the page... minutes after I began to write.
 • So I think you have to whait some time before going to deleted a page. That is not the first time that you dont have paciense.Unsigned comment by Sigurd (talk • contribs).
While you're putting the page together you can use a sandbox in your user area.-- KingAragorn  talk  contribs  edits  email  16:37, 1 March 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'd just come on to change all the links - I'm glad you beat me to it! Thank you! -- KingAragorn  talk  contribs  edits  email  19:17, 24 April 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
