Hey there KingAragorn, nice to see you around. You've been doing a great job over at lotr.wikia.com, nice to see someone with the same interest. Sometimes I wish we could merge projects so both communities aren't trying to accomplish the same thing, when we could be working together to accomplish it twice as fast, oh well. Keep up the great work! --[[User:Hyarion|Hyarion]] 11:13, 29 August 2007 (EDT)

:Hi [[User:Hyarion|Hyarion]]! Thanks for the welcome, I think that it is possible for this wiki to be merged with lotr.wikia.com if ever you couldn't continue paying for the server or whatever. But I doubt users will agree on a merge in any other case.--[[User:KingAragorn|KingAragorn]] 05:55, 30 August 2007 (EDT)
Hi KA! If understand it correctly, the sorting of the artists by their last name disappeared when the category "Images by Artist" was changed to "Images by artist". Should they still be listed under their last name? --[[User:Morgan|Morgan]] 17:41, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

::Hello KingAragorn, paying for the server isn't important, I would be happy to migrate all the content if the community deemed lotr.wikia.com a more developed and better wiki to be working on. Keep up the great work! --[[User:Hyarion|Hyarion]] 11:27, 30 August 2007 (EDT)
:Ah yes, I remember breaking that now (if it's any consolation, it was because the bot did it). They should still be listed alphabetically. I'll get round to fixing it at some point. --{{User:KingAragorn/sig}} 18:44, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

==Books v Movies==
::I got round to it. --{{User:KingAragorn/sig}} 21:10, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
They're pretty big articles, I'm just having some trouble with the naming. Maybe it's better to call them Books v Movies: Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings (etc); this is the standard naming of adaptations here and allows a disambiguation with [[Rankin/Bass' The Return of the King]] and [[Ralph Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings]], should we ever write those. -- [[User:Ederchil|Ederchil]] 03:17, 3 July 2008 (EDT)
: The names were an issue on the One Wiki, someone said it was wrong to put Jackson '''Verses''' Tolkien. But yes, ''Books v Movies: Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings'' sounds good!--{{User:KingAragorn/sig}} 06:15, 3 July 2008 (EDT)

Any idea on which copyright template to use on images of publications where the publisher no longer exists? For example, [[:File:Show Volume 1 Number 1.png|Show Volume 1 Number 1.png]].--[[User:Morgan|Morgan]] 20:01, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

== Your Wish Come True ==
:Yes, it's difficult to tell what happens to copyrights when businesses go bankrupt. However, just to be sure, I would use the fairuse template and attribute "H & R Publications" as the copyright holder. --{{User:KingAragorn/sig}} 21:10, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

==Lego Fair-use==
Hi KA, would it be possible if you could create a fair-use template for the Lego Group. As we already have many Lego images, and probally will have more in the future. Their site is: http://www.lego.com/en-us/Default.aspx Thanks! --[[User:Amroth|Amroth]] 20:19, 19 February 2012 (UTC)

==Help:Signatures==
:Certainly. I've made [[Template:Fairuse-Lego|the template]], but we'll have to ask one of those nice admins to add it to the [[MediaWiki:Licenses|licensing list]].--{{User:KingAragorn/sig}} 22:02, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
I had thought on a lot of Help articles to write (Images, Templates, Referencing currently exist only in my head, Disambiguation in my [[User:Ederchil/Sandbox|Sandbox]]), but Signatures wasn't one of them. Good article, really helpful. I might make my own some day ;) -- [[User:Ederchil|Ederchil]] 17:51, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

If your bot works, here's some jobs:
* Move all images from category "Images of The Lord of the Rings: The White Council" to "Images from The Lord of the Rings: The White Council"
* Move all images from category "Images of The Battle for Middle-earth II" to "Images from The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II"

You think that's possible? -- {{User:Ederchil/sig}} 12:16, 10 May 2009 (UTC)
== Fair-use Cover ==

Yes! I tried the bot a few months ago and there was an error with it working with the site, so when you asked I thought it wouldn't work; but Hyarion must have fixed the problem. Your request is most certainly possible, and I'm doing it now. --{{User:KingAragorn/sig}} 17:04, 10 May 2009 (UTC)
We need to do something about this: {{Redlink|[[Template:Fairuse-cover]]}}. It's used ''a lot'' and does seem moderately useful. Do we need, e.g. "Fairuse-HarperCollins", "Fairuse-HoughtonMifflin" etc etc? --{{User:Mith/sig}} 10:04, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

Hey, I just wanted to ask whether you have tested my extension already. I don't mind if you haven't, 'cause I begin to realize how precious time is, now I've finished school and work 40 hours per week ;-) It just would be great if someone had tested it before Hyarion installs it on the TG server :) -- [[User:Eldarion Telcontar|Eldarion Telcontar]] 21:18, 11 November 2009 (UTC)

::::::hmm... It appears that it doesn't work in MS Internet Explorer. That's what I tried when I tested it. Now I've used firefox and it works fine on that. Any ideas as to why it's producing errors in IE? In firefox anyway it's brilliant, well done with putting it together; once we work out the kinks we can get it installed here and it'll be really useful. Thanks! --{{User:KingAragorn/sig}} 23:04, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
::Apparently not! --{{User:Mith/sig}} 11:12, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

:::::::It's a for-each-loop that produces the errors in IE. The Microsoft browser recognizes "for (var a in b)" but not the following: "for each (var a in b)". FF knows both. I have deleted the "each" and Voila - it works in IE and FF... at least for me ;-) I have uploaded [http://gilgalad.piranho.de/extension/GoogleMapsJsExporter.zip this] file. Download it and replace the GoogleMapsJsExporter.php in extensions/GoogleMaps_Arda/export with the downloaded file. Now it should work for IE as well... I am not going to delete any more of the 66 candidates for speedy deletion unless you can assure me that [[Special:WhatLinksHere/File:Doors of Night.jpg|there is no more of these]]. You consistently do this and it is beginning to annoy a bit. --{{User:Mith/sig}} 21:43, 14 June 2012 (UTC)

::::::::Yay, it works! I've also tested it in Safari, and it works on that too. We should get to install it here and then I think it would be a good idea to create an infobox for locations and then all of our locations pages can have this map highlighting where the location is.--{{User:KingAragorn/sig}} 20:23, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
==Z==
Hi! Can you please add Z to Portal:Languages? The code on the page was too complicated for me... --[[User:Morgan|Morgan]] 22:08, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

:::::::::Great. But I've discovered the same problem in the EditorsMap.js. I have tried to edit the map in IE and there was the same error. Therefore I have to ask you to replace a file again. I have uploaded the new EditorsMap.js [http://gilgalad.piranho.de/extension/EditorsMap.zip here]. Now the entire extension should work. I have looked for other "for each"es in the directory and there weren't any more ;-)

:::::::::If it works I will ask Hyarion to install the extension. -- [[User:Eldarion Telcontar|Eldarion Telcontar]] 20:42, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

::::::::::Done. Now we've got to see if Hyarion has time to install it here.

:::::::::::I think you may have forgotten to add "var wgGoogleMapsTiles = 'path of the tile images folder from step 1 goes here (e.g. "http://www.testsite.com/Tiles")';" to the beginning of the EditorsMap.js. I get an "wgGoogleMapsTiles undefined" error. Could you add this so that I can check whether the Editors Map works? -- [[User:Eldarion Telcontar|Eldarion Telcontar]] 21:10, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
I'm trying to name a category for such [[:Category:Sites of civilisation|Sites of Civilations]] referring to courtyards, markets, squares, etc. How about "Spaces", or is too vague? Articles include [[Court of the Fountain (Minas Tirith)]] and [[Square of the Palace]]. Or can we use an existing category?--[[User:Morgan|Morgan]] 21:27, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

::::::::::::Sorry about that, I forgot to add it to your new file. Well the editors map seems to work fine now.--{{User:KingAragorn/sig}} 22:15, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
:How about "Squares"?--{{User:KingAragorn/sig}} 22:05, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

Sometimes, changing links to redirects to jump the redirects is tricky work for which bots are too stupid. In [[Zirak]] and [[Zigil]] changing <nowiki>[[Zirakzigil]] into [[Celebdil]]</nowiki> led to plain silliness. You cannot change one name into another, even when they name the same subject, when the purpose of it being in the article is actually to distinguish between the names. In these two articles, I have put back Zirakzigil, without linking it. When three names for the same mountain are used in one sentence that explains they refer to the same mountain, I see no reason they should all be links to the same article; linking the name that is actually the direct link is quite sufficient.
:Many thanks!--{{User:KingAragorn/sig}} 12:22, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

I’m concerned that much more mistakes like this are made by the bots than we happen to notice. You even visited Zigil after the change and didn’t correct the ludicrous statement the bot had left behind. — [[User:Mithrennaith|Mithrennaith]] 21:01, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
== Image/File ==

:OK. But it would have been unnecessary if you hadn't linked to a redirect (which redirected to an article already linked to in the article previously anyway) in the first place.--{{User:KingAragorn/sig}} 22:23, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
What's the difference? Do we need to change [http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Help:Images#How_to this]?--[[User:Morgan|Morgan]] 20:34, 24 June 2012 (UTC)

::Except I didn't. Apparently I created [[Zigil]], but I didn’t actually design it: in fact I modeled it closely on Hyarion’s example at [[Zirak]]. Also, at that time, both [[Zirakzigil]] and [[Silvertine]] were not redirects but separate articles. All part and parcel of Hyarion’s concept at that time, which it seems got changed a year after I worked on those articles. Just another of those things one ought to be careful about when dealing with redirects ;-)
:It's the old way of doing it. Of course, both will work. But you'll usually find that articles that use "Image:" are very old and haven't been updated in a long time. It just bugs me! --{{User:KingAragorn/sig}} 20:53, 24 June 2012 (UTC)

::I've now tried to do the job properly and make Zirak and Zigil fully consistent with the current linking practice. — [[User:Mithrennaith|Mithrennaith]] 00:21, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
::It bugs me that you change <nowiki>{{references}}</nowiki> to <nowiki>{{References}}</nowiki>, for example, it's not necessary and we should be consistent! File: is preferable (because we have sound clips that are files and certainly not images), but I don't think it's worth editing a page to specifically change. --{{User:Mith/sig}} 12:08, 30 June 2012 (UTC)

:::Thank you, but I wouldn't model an article creation on a 5 year old design. ;) --{{User:KingAragorn/sig}} 15:42, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
== Radagast/Decipher ==
::::You wouldn't, not now. But I think you keep forgetting that this was two years ago, and this place was different then. Policy was how Hyarion did things and was not laid down in policy pages and standards were only discernible by looking at how Hyarion had done similar things previously ;-) — [[User:Mithrennaith|Mithrennaith]] 16:52, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
I tagged Radagast's Decipher Card appearance with a {fact} because I've been meaning to check out the source. Thank you for your help!  Please feel free to delete the Forum post!  Again, much appreciated!

== Template:Title ==

I have done [[Template:Title]]. Please test it in a variety of articles in the many combinations there are:
*italics
*brackets (just <nowiki>{{title}}</nowiki>)
*lowercase
*italics and lowercase
*italics and brackets
*lowercase and brackets
*italics, brackets and lowercase
Note that the template should be able to deal with all namespaces, as well as coping with the spellings "italic", "lower-case" and "lowercase". Finally, the two options of "italics" and "lowercase" (brackets isn't an option: the template will always make your brackets smaller) should work either way around. So, I hope, <nowiki>{{title|italics|lowercase}}</nowiki> should work the same as <nowiki>{{title|lower-case|italics}}</nowiki>.

If you could test this one out and list any snags here, I would be grateful. Thanks! --{{User:Mith/sig}} 01:48, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

:Many thanks for making this! Here are my tests based on the different combinations:

:*italics - ''[[The Fall of Arthur]]''
:*brackets - [[Legolas (elf of Gondolin)]]
:*lowercase - [[essë]]
:*italics and lowercase - where would italics and lowercase be used?
:*italics and brackets - [[The Hobbit (1985 television film)|''The Hobbit'' (1985 television film)]]
:*lowercase and brackets - [[nár (Quenya)]]
:*italics, brackets and lowercase - where would italics and lowercase (and brackets) be used?

:From these tests it looks like the template works and there are no problems.--{{User:KingAragorn/sig}} 10:56, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

::italics and lowercase (and sometimes brackets as well) should be used for Elvish words, I believe, as we do tend to italicise them. But if that's not the case then it doesn't matter. I'm a bit worried about whether it will work alright with both lowercase and italics the other way around. --{{User:Mith/sig}} 11:03, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

:::Further tests show that they work either way around:

:::*<nowiki>{{title|italics|lowercase}}</nowiki> - [[lalaith (word)|''lalaith'' (word)]]

== Goldberry 3D image ==

Hi, please make it known that the 3D scene I created is only meant as an educational exercise only, not to give anyone monetary gain. I do not intend to take advantage of the Tolkien or Hildebrandt Brothers, and do not seek to sell any image based on this. I created this 3D scene out of respect for the painting by the Brothers Hildebrandt, my heroes for decades. I got an email from a person who accused me of simply altering the painting and calling it my own. I actually created every object in this image using ZBrush and rendered it myself. If she compared the two together anyway she would have noticed many differences, but again, the copyright is for my 3D scene only, not the original painting, and it was only an educational exercise for learning 3D modeling.

:Hi Dave. I've added a [[:File:D.W. Luebbert - Goldberry.jpg#Summary|short description]] to the image's page. Is that OK?--{{User:KingAragorn/sig}} 20:55, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

Images

Hi KA! If understand it correctly, the sorting of the artists by their last name disappeared when the category "Images by Artist" was changed to "Images by artist". Should they still be listed under their last name? --Morgan 17:41, 3 January 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Ah yes, I remember breaking that now (if it's any consolation, it was because the bot did it). They should still be listed alphabetically. I'll get round to fixing it at some point. -- KingAragorn  talk  contribs  edits  email  18:44, 3 January 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I got round to it. -- KingAragorn  talk  contribs  edits  email  21:10, 3 January 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Any idea on which copyright template to use on images of publications where the publisher no longer exists? For example, Show Volume 1 Number 1.png.--Morgan 20:01, 3 January 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yes, it's difficult to tell what happens to copyrights when businesses go bankrupt. However, just to be sure, I would use the fairuse template and attribute "H & R Publications" as the copyright holder. -- KingAragorn  talk  contribs  edits  email  21:10, 3 January 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Lego Fair-use

Hi KA, would it be possible if you could create a fair-use template for the Lego Group. As we already have many Lego images, and probally will have more in the future. Their site is: http://www.lego.com/en-us/Default.aspx Thanks! --Amroth 20:19, 19 February 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Certainly. I've made the template, but we'll have to ask one of those nice admins to add it to the licensing list.-- KingAragorn  talk  contribs  edits  email  22:02, 19 February 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Mandos

I'll leave this with you to sort out, but Talk:Námo (Mandos) didn't move because Talk:Mandos already existed. I don't know if you want to keep one/both/neither. Up to you. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 15:28, 30 March 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

They can probably just stay as they are.-- KingAragorn  talk  contribs  edits  email  16:13, 30 March 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Why thank you for the welcome, King Aragorn, or shall I call you Strider? Unsigned comment by OlorinTheWhite (talk • contribs).

Fair-use Cover

We need to do something about this: Template:Fairuse-cover[former link]. It's used a lot and does seem moderately useful. Do we need, e.g. "Fairuse-HarperCollins", "Fairuse-HoughtonMifflin" etc etc? --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 10:04, 13 May 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yes. Whenever I attempt to sort it out, I quickly give up because of all the work involved. From the start of June I will be able to help you with all of this work.-- KingAragorn  talk  contribs  edits  email  10:27, 13 May 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I am not going to delete any more of the 66 candidates for speedy deletion unless you can assure me that there is no more of these. You consistently do this and it is beginning to annoy a bit. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 21:43, 14 June 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Z

Locations category

I'm trying to name a category for such Sites of Civilations referring to courtyards, markets, squares, etc. How about "Spaces", or is too vague? Articles include Court of the Fountain (Minas Tirith) and Square of the Palace. Or can we use an existing category?--Morgan 21:27, 8 June 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How about "Squares"?-- KingAragorn  talk  contribs  edits  email  22:05, 8 June 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sounds good.--Morgan 22:47, 8 June 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Image/File

What's the difference? Do we need to change this?--Morgan 20:34, 24 June 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

It's the old way of doing it. Of course, both will work. But you'll usually find that articles that use "Image:" are very old and haven't been updated in a long time. It just bugs me! -- KingAragorn  talk  contribs  edits  email  20:53, 24 June 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It bugs me that you change {{references}} to {{References}}, for example, it's not necessary and we should be consistent! File: is preferable (because we have sound clips that are files and certainly not images), but I don't think it's worth editing a page to specifically change. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 12:08, 30 June 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Radagast/Decipher

I tagged Radagast's Decipher Card appearance with a {fact} because I've been meaning to check out the source. It was an article on Weta's site ([1]). It's dead, but it's still accessible with Wayback Machine - [2]. How would we source that? --Ederchil (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 16:22, 30 June 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I wasn't sure myself, but Mith suggests that we should just reference the archive.-- KingAragorn  talk  contribs  edits  email  16:30, 30 June 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yep, nothing strange about that -- give the Wayback Machine page as the reference.--Morgan 19:01, 30 June 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Tom and Goldberry

Which Infobox? We don't know what they are, do we? --Ederchil (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 17:58, 9 July 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Exactly. They're legitimate characters and it's a shame that they don't have an infobox just because we don't know what they are. How about an infobox for "enigmas"?-- KingAragorn  talk  contribs  edits  email  18:01, 9 July 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I have no problem with that. --Ederchil (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 18:43, 9 July 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Copyright license

I talked to Mans Bjorkman and he said that we have his permission to use his heraldic devices provided that we mention:

  1. A link to the source (http://www.forodrim.org/gobennas/heraldry/heraldry.htm)
  2. A disclaimer that they are based on Tolkien's own images and descriptions.

Sage 17:28, 15 July 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Ah, will you proceed to add the copyright notice, templates etc? Sage 17:51, 15 July 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks for getting permission from Mans Bjorkman. As they're not all by Bjorkman in the Flags and Devices category, I can't bot it. Could you add the the info to each page? Just put the source URL as the website (i.e. [http://www.forodrim.org/gobennas/heraldry/heraldry.htm Source]), and put the disclaimer under ==Summary==.-- KingAragorn  talk  contribs  edits  email  17:57, 15 July 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks!

Thanks for fixing my goof up on the Third Age:2644 page. I meant to add Third Age:2665 which was a broken link on most of the Náin genealogy pages (including the Thorin page), but edited the existing 2644 instead. When I went back to the Thorin page later, I couldn't understand at first why the link was still red. --NoBT 22:44, 21 July 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Writings

I undid your last edit to Writings by J.R.R. Tolkien: if you check an early version of the article, the entries often contained publisher, page numbers for essays, etc. But since the list is now so large, I've removed all that information, which is available in the individual articles.--Morgan 19:07, 27 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Template:Title

I have done Template:Title. Please test it in a variety of articles in the many combinations there are:

  • italics
  • brackets (just {{title}})
  • lowercase
  • italics and lowercase
  • italics and brackets
  • lowercase and brackets
  • italics, brackets and lowercase

Note that the template should be able to deal with all namespaces, as well as coping with the spellings "italic", "lower-case" and "lowercase". Finally, the two options of "italics" and "lowercase" (brackets isn't an option: the template will always make your brackets smaller) should work either way around. So, I hope, {{title|italics|lowercase}} should work the same as {{title|lower-case|italics}}.

If you could test this one out and list any snags here, I would be grateful. Thanks! --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 01:48, 14 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Many thanks for making this! Here are my tests based on the different combinations:
From these tests it looks like the template works and there are no problems.-- KingAragorn  talk  contribs  edits  email  10:56, 14 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
italics and lowercase (and sometimes brackets as well) should be used for Elvish words, I believe, as we do tend to italicise them. But if that's not the case then it doesn't matter. I'm a bit worried about whether it will work alright with both lowercase and italics the other way around. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 11:03, 14 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Further tests show that they work either way around:
I don't mind whether we italicise words or not. We just need a consistent style.-- KingAragorn  talk  contribs  edits  email  22:31, 14 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The previous templates have been removed, and all applicable articles that have {{DISPLAYTITLE}} now utilise Template:Title instead. Elvish words have not been italicised. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 22:31, 19 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That's great, thanks! Should we use {{title}} on disambiguation pages?-- KingAragorn  talk  contribs  edits  email  10:44, 20 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm not entirely sure, to be honest - I thought about doing it but I wasn't convinced if I should. What's your feelings on the matter? --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 23:05, 20 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm similarly unsure. We want to make sure that people know they're viewing disambiguation pages, and a full size "(disambiguation)" is a good way of doing this. In saying that, a smaller "(disambiguation)" does not really inhibit this purpose and it does look better. Implementation should be fairly easy if we just add {{title}} into Template:Disambig.-- KingAragorn  talk  contribs  edits  email  10:03, 21 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
