Refs
Hello there! I saw you worked quite a bit on Vána's page, and you really tried to make the refs look standardized. But, it's a lot easier if you use the ref templates.
For example, you could search Template:MR for Morgoth's Ring and Template:LT1 for Lost Tales one or Template:LT2 for Lost Tales two. Then you just use the ref codes like MR|P3I1 for Morgoth's Ring - Part Three: The Later Quenta Silmarillion, "Of the Valar" and it's easier than writing out all the chapter names and putting everything in double brackets. Everything will be linked for you. Even if you like typing it all out, it would be best to switch to a ref template or someone may just undo your edits. Misuse / Overuse of Valië and rank designations
Hi again! Please, do not feel discouraged by this. I put this on Vána's talk page, but then I noticed that you were making the same edit revisions on Estë's page, too. So, I thought it would be best to just drop you a note. I am glad you are editing here and adding content, but I have the following suggestions:
The insistence of using Valië every time a Vala female is referred to is unnecessary. Also, we have to be careful, and if you are going to write Valië, which is okay sometimes, do not write it as 'Valie'. Use the special characters at the bottom of the editing page. I would like to clarify that Vala is not the male version of Valië. It is a gender-neutral designation of high-ranking Ainur. Just as Aratar is a gender-neutral term for the highest ranking Valar.
Anyway, once rank is established for the featured character of the page, it does not need to be repeated. (Please see: [Style: Naming] ) This is merely a style issue with clear and concise naming and not a big deal. It would be fair to state once that Vána is a Valië on her page and leave it at that. :) --Elf-esteem 19:35, 5 March 2016 (UTC)
Names and titles
Hello again, I'd like to encourage you to please read the Naming link under help, particularly with conciseness. In my own creative writing, I love being flowery, too. So, again, I'm not trying to pick on you or make you feel bad. I understand what you are doing. I know Tolkien did this all the time and used it as a way to add character details (Glorfindel the golden haired, Ecthelion of the fair voice, etc.), but this is just an encyclopaedia.
The admin like to keep things simple and straightforward. Everyone does not need to be the spouse of So-and-so, the rank Blah So-and-so, or aka the Blah of Blah-blah. Explaining characters like that can be confusing. They can just be written with the plain character name in brackets.
On the character's page, we include information, as appropriate, about the character's titles and other names, with references, in the general history, in other versions of the legendarium, and in etymology. We do not need to make laundry lists of that character's names nor include the titles of other characters on their page. And, we should not use titles unless we are specifically pointing out the titles and other names the character has in the correct place in their article. Like it says in the help file, in general, just write Gandalf, not 'Gandalf the Grey'. I hope this makes sense. If you have questions or need help, ask an admin on their talk page.
P.S. I did notice that you started using the correct characters for elven words like Valië, so good job there. The only other little thing is capitalization. We have to check Tolkien's writing carefully and should only capitalize what he capitalized when it comes to any post-nominal desginations or general descriptive phrases. --Elf-esteem 19:26, 24 March 2016 (UTC)
- What Elf said. There's no need to call Valar "the Vala Ulmo". Would you call Aragorn "the Man Aragorn" and Legolas "the Elf Legolas"? It clutters the page. If they want to know who it is, they can follow the link.
- Also, stop changing images. The main image requires discussion. Also, you uploaded an image and claimed it was public domain. That cannot be true. Please take better care.
