:::One more thing: there's no reason to add a lot of redlinks to [[Letters not published in "The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien"]]; Tolkien wrote a ''lot'' of letters, so unless you intend to create an article about a specific letter, it's better not to add it to the list. Can I move all the redlinks to a user page instead, for example, "User:Sigurd/Letters"? And when you make an article, you can add it back to Letters not published in "The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien".--[[User:Morgan|Morgan]] 14:15, 3 November 2014 (UTC)

Letters

Fr your information, I removed the following letters from the list (since I couldn't find any reference for them):

  • [[Weeler 1 August|1 August, to Mr Weeler ]]
  • [[Jonathan Wordsworth 17 Febuary 1958|17 Febuary 1958, to Jonathan Wordsworth]]

For the first letter, I cannot find anything at all. Should "Weeler" be "Wheeler"? Concerning the second, H&S noted the letter in an old version of their Addenda and Corrigenda (cached version found here), but the entry appears to have been removed from the current version (likely for a good reason). Let me know if you have additional sources for any of these two letters.--J.R.R. Tolkien 21:18, 2 April 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I put some letters in the list, because I have the arquives and informations and to easy to me put there later. (Sigurd 01:50, 3 April 2014 (UTC))Reply[reply]

Story of Kullervo

I removed the information about editors since 1) we should make an article for the book once it's published 2) as you can see on the page we leave such details for articles about the individual publications.--Morgan 17:19, 8 April 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Ok. No problem. I will try write the article soon. (Sigurd 17:21, 8 April 2014 (UTC))Reply[reply]

Images

You need to have copyright owner's information and preferably permission when you upload images. --Ederchil (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 14:28, 4 May 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

So, Why there is a buttom for "Fair-use" in this site? And you deleted photos that were already here for many years. I think then that Botton "Fair-use" should be taken in the options bar and then a lot of things should be deleted, especially those from the Tolkien Estate. We have to be logical. (Sigurd 19:58, 4 May 2014 (UTC))Reply[reply]

Headshots from people aren't fair use in the strictest sense - they're owned by the photographer or publisher, and published under a different license. And as for other images - yes. But that means some should be deleted, it doesn't mean you can upload more. See also Tolkien Gateway:File licensing templates. --Ederchil (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 20:56, 4 May 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I did not find any specific rule on this link about Images of people. There are "Copyright files may be used on Tolkien Gateway if the image uploader believes that it qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law. Copyrighted images can be under fairuse because Tolkien Gateway is a not-for-profit educational website." Where is the exception for use images of peoples? If Fair use is not acepted in Tolkien Gateway I think a lot of things must be deleted indeed... Many Tolkien unpublished letter for example. (Sigurd 02:41, 5 May 2014 (UTC))Reply[reply]

Not everything is fair use. You can't simply grab whatever you find on the internet, slap on a fair use tag and reuse it. Do not upload any more images. --Ederchil (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 13:11, 4 August 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I repear Tolkiengateway rules: "Copyright files may be used on Tolkien Gateway if the image uploader believes that it qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law. Copyrighted images can be under fairuse because Tolkien Gateway is a not-for-profit educational website." Unsigned comment by Sigurd (talk • contribs).
On what basis did you believe it was fair use? --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 15:06, 4 August 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The Fair use doctrine permits use if no free or PD alternative is available. There is - someone can go to Oxford and take the photographs themselves. --Ederchil (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 18:14, 4 August 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Here's some reading on the matter. --Ederchil (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 18:15, 4 August 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

So... http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/File:Christopher_Tolkien.jpg And many others should be delete here.

If you haven't noticed, KingAragorn and I have deleted hundreds of images over the last year for copyright violation; we just haven't gone through everything yet. But, just because things have been wrongly uploaded in the past doesn't mean you are allowed to do so now. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 21:14, 4 August 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The image of Christopher Tolkien was posted by KingAragorn itself. So I cannot understand what is the requiriments to upload an image here. It is not clear to me. --(Sigurd)

Websites evolve through time. It is a usual phenomenon in wikis to change their policies in time. They may begin with simpler rules but afterwards they grow out of their hobbyist framework and are forced to refine their function and comform with strictier policies. For example many early TG articles begun as ripoffs of the Encyclopedia of Arda or Wikipedia. Many of them have been rewritten afterwards, but even if I still find a few articles copied from EoA, these doesn't justify starting copying from EoA all over again.
Therefore I find no strange that KingAragorn has to undo things that he had done himself. Perhaps CT's picture is tolerated because of its imporance, and its deletion withheld until a free alternative could be acquired but the policies still hold.
As for the pictures you uploaded, perhaps you should try requesting permission from the websites you found them on. Sage 08:01, 5 August 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I understand that the rules have changed. I just think the rules should be more clearer about that, to avoid missunderstands. In short what you said is that "Fair use" is everything that the Adm consider as such. (Sigurd 08:11, 5 August 2014 (UTC))Reply[reply]

It's not about a rule. Let's say that you intend to clean a dirty house, when someone starts spilling dirt on the floor. When you stop him, he says "So you allow only mess made already by yourself". Of course you have to prevent any new and subsequent mess while you are in the process of cleaning. You have the option to allow new mess and then have to clean everything together, but this won't work.
It's logistically easier to revert transgressions on sight that reverting everything that has been done already. Sage 09:03, 5 August 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I understand what you mean. Since I joined this wiki I see it happen constantly. People uploading images in the same way I did with FairUse. I just want to known objetive rules about it.(Sigurd 13:06, 5 August 2014 (UTC))Reply[reply]

Use of English

On your userpage you claim to have a near-native understanding of English. However, I have had to correct every single edit you made today regarding George Allen and Unwin. If you could look at the changes I've made I think it would really help you to understand.

But there is one stylistic error I've seen you make a couple of times: External links. It should be "==External links==" not - even if there's only one link - "=External link=". If you could remember this for the future that would be great. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 10:17, 5 August 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I do not know what's going on with you and Ederchil. But it s very annoying.I leave the details of grammar to the administrators to correct. I just contribute with informations here. About the veracity of dates please read this article: http://www.thingsmadefromletters.com/2014/08/04/100-years-of-allen-and-unwin/. (Sigurd 13:00, 5 August 2014 (UTC))Reply[reply]
It is is also very annoying to have to correct someone's spelling and grammar when I could be contributing something useful to the wiki. An administrator's job is not to be a proof-reader or some kind grammar-tidy-up-bot: administrators exist to effect the outcome of discussions and exercise certain technical rights (such as deleting pages) that only they possess. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 16:19, 5 August 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Understand.I found that administrators should correct any errors they saw.I have not read about the administrator and their duties. So, where I can read the duties of administrators? (Sigurd 23:11, 5 August 2014 (UTC)).Reply[reply]
Like much on Tolkien Gateway it isn't explicitly written down but I don't think you need worry about it: the only time you should need help from specifically an administrator is with regard to deleting or protecting pages. Aside from that we actually allow editors a lot of leeway to make edits to the wiki. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 12:31, 6 August 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Licensing templates

For book covers, please use Template:Fairuse-cover instead. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 10:42, 21 September 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Letter reciever

"Damington" or "Darrington"? The articles are not consistent.--Morgan 13:42, 3 November 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Good observation. I dont known how to change the titles. Indeed the name is "Fay Darrington". Please correct this errors. (Sigurd 13:52, 3 November 2014 (UTC))Reply[reply]
Ok, I'll change it.--Morgan 13:54, 3 November 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
One more thing: there's no reason to add a lot of redlinks to Letters not published in "The Letters of J.R.R.
