- 3 - John Ronald Reuel Tolkien is born to Arthur and Mabel Tolkien at Bank House, Maitland Street, in Bloemfontein, South Africa.
- 4 - Arthur Tolkien sends a letter to his mother about his new son.
- 31 - J.R.R. Tolkien is christened in the Anglican Cathedral in Bloemfontein.

- 15 - Arthur, Mabel, two household servants, and the nurse holding Ronald pose for a picture in the garden at Bank House. The photograph is used in Tolkien Christmas cards sent to family and friends. The image is reproduced in J.R.R. Tolkien: A Biography and The Tolkien Family Album.
