Aulendil was the second son and third child of Vardamir Nólimon, the heir of Elros Tar-Minyatur, first King of Númenor. His older brother took up the Sceptre as Tar-Amandil. Though he left descendants, nothing of their lives was recorded.[1]

Etymology[edit | edit source]

Aulendil is a Quenya name, meaning "Servant of Aulë" according to Christopher Tolkien.[2] Paul Strack explains that according to ordinary nomenclature, it should mean "Friend of Aulë", because of the suffix -(n)dil ("friend", "lover", "devoted to").[3]
