True heart, true friend! Forlong!

Forlong was the wide-shouldered, old, and grey-bearded[2] Lord of Lossarnach[3] during the War of the Ring.

History

In addition to his age, Forlong had a huge girth,[2] which led Bergil of Minas Tirith to refer to him as both "Forlong the Fat" and "Good old Forlong"[3] and led to him being referred to as "Forlong the old" in the Song of the Mounds of Mundburg[4].

On 9 March T.A. 3019,[5] Forlong rode into the Minas Tirith clad in mail with a black helm and a long heavy spear on a big thick-limbed horse[2] with two hundred of his men to help to defend the city[1]. His men were grim-faced, shorter and swarthier than any men that Peregrin Took had seen in Gondor before. They were well-armed and bore great battle-axes.[2] On 15 March T.A. 3019,[6] Forlong fought in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields during which he was killed by strokes of axes when he fought alone and unhorsed.[7] He was remembered in the Song of the Mounds of Mundburg.[4]

Etymology

Forlong was a name of forgotten origin that descended from the days before the ships of the Númenóreans sailed the sea.[8] Its meaning is unknown.[9] It is also unknown if the element for is related to the same element in the Dunlendish name Forgoil.

Portrayal in adaptations

Forlong in The Lord of the Rings Online

2015: The Lord of the Rings Online:

Forlong is first found in Minas Tirith before the battle in the "Merry Swan" tavern on the third level of the city, reminiscing on their youth with his friends Hirluin and Neldir. Later, both Forlong and Hirluin fight in the defence of the White City on the walls of the First Circle. After the Rohirrim army arrives, both of them rush outside the city gates and faces their foes together before Hirluin is slain in view of his friend. Forlong himself is gravely wounded and after the battle is over is found by the player on the field. He shares that he saw the visage of Thorongil on the field of battle but believes it to be his dying fever until Aragorn comes to his side. Amazed to see the man from the days of his youth untouched by years, Forlong departs in peace.
