Forum:Etymology of Shire place-names
I came along this old message by David Salo, giving speculative Old English etymologies of Hobbitish place-names in the Shire. I wondered if we could use it to cite and give etymologies of such articles; for example Crickhollow "Derives from "Old Hobbitish" *Crycholh meaning 'low place by the hill'" and so on.
On the other hand, it could be a bit too speculative as the legendarium doesn't mention much "Old Hobbitish", and may cause confusion with Rohirric. Sage 11:42, 2 March 2013 (UTC)
- I'm not wholly against the idea. But in my opinion it would have to be phrased more like:
- "It has been [or 'David Salo has'] suggested that the name Crickhollow derives from the speculative Old Hobbitish form Crycholh (meaning 'low place by the hill')." --Morgan 19:50, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
