Houghton Mifflin holds the right for publishing works of J.R.R. Tolkien in the United States. Harper Collins in the European publisher.

On January 16th, 2001, Houghton Mifflin announced they had acquired rights to publish books based on Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings.
