Letter 130 is a letter written by J.R.R. Tolkien and published in The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien.

[edit] Summary

Tolkien had, by way of example, sent in a new version of the chapter Riddles in the Dark, which Allen & Unwin included in the second edition of The Hobbit.[notes 1] Tolkien had hesitated about what to say in regards to two versions of this crucial event,[notes 2] but now decided to accept the existence of both. With this letter came a short explanatory note, also meant for inclusion, saying that the text as it now was (Bilbo found/stole the Ring) was what actually happened, and that the earlier version (Bilbo won the Ring) was an attempt by Bilbo to cover this up.
