Letter 185
RecipientChristopher and Faith
Date19 March 1956
Subject(s)Letter 184

Letter 185 is a letter written by J.R.R. Tolkien and published in The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien.

[edit] Summary

Tolkien commented on Letter 184, from a Sam Gamgee of Tooting. He then said that though Tooting might sound hobbit-like, it was very un-Shirelike.

The last fragment of the letter commented on Allen & Unwin's prognosis for book sales, extremely good news.

[edit] Notes

In J.R.R. Tolkien: A Biography, pages 224-225, the event of Letter 184 was also mentioned. It was followed by: "[l]ater he said: 'For some time I lived in fear of receiving a letter signed S. Gollum. That would have been more difficult to deal with." It is likely that this passage was from this letter.
