It is really irritating me that one of these is written with brackets and the other is not. Are they both correct? If one is not, can we please change it?! --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 19:50, 2 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello Mith! Yes, actually there was a thought behind. Let me just quickly investigate and I'll return here soon (I just write right now so it's not immediately changed). --Morgan 19:55, 2 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Okey, I had a look at it. The word "correct" is difficult to apply in this case - it's a matter of how to apply the giving of titles to publications. The first one (Essays and Studies (1929)) clearly has the head-line title Essays and Studies on the cover, followed by "by Members of the English Association" and further down "Vol. 14, 1929". And concerning Essays and Studies 1953, that's just the given order of the components of the title on the cover page. So basically we have two options:
  1. Aim for internal consistency on Tolkien Gateway, and thus use (for example) Essays and Studies 1929 and Essays and Studies 1953.
  2. Aim for authentic rendition of given titles, and thus (perhaps) keep the pages as they are.
Just my two pennies worth. --Morgan 20:30, 2 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Is the layout of front covers indicative of the title? I would've thought that they're both "Essays and Studies vol. XX, 19YY", so surely we can choose whether we go for brackets or not as the year isn't the title in either publication? That's whatI reckon anyway. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 09:52, 4 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I checked on English Association web page; seems like Essays and Studies always been an annual publication. So I would be totally okey with the page title: "Essays and Studies (19YY)". --Morgan 10:42, 4 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]
