Tar-Telemmaitë was the fifteenth King of Númenor.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

From his time onwards, the Kings ruled from the death of their predecessor to their own death, but actual power passed often to their sons and counsellors when they reached old age. The lifetime of the descendants of Elros decreased because the Shadow had fallen on Númenor. Tar-Telemmaitë loved silver and had his servants always searching for mithril.[1]

Tar-Telemmaitë either had only one child or his eldest child was a daughter, for upon his death he was succeeded by Tar-Vanimeldë, the third Ruling Queen.[3]

Etymology[edit | edit source]

Telemmaitë is a Quenya name. According to Christopher Tolkien it means "Silver-handed".[4] Paul Strack suggests that it seems to be a compound of an assimilated form of telpë ("silver") and the adjective element maitë ("handed").[5] He was called Telemmaitë, because of his love of silver.[1] Like all the rulers of Númenor who took their royal names in Quenya, Telemmaitë added the prefix tar- ("high") to his name when he received the Sceptre.[6]
