The Tolkien Gateway: Offline Version is a project which focuses on making the contents of Tolkien Gateway available offline, without the need for access to the internet.

One question is what form will the content be in. A possibility is PDFs, another is HTML documents, and another is embedded inside of a Java or Windows application.

As Tolkien Gateway is much smaller than say, Wikipedia, we should be able to easily fit all of our text content onto a CD as well as current USB drives. When it comes to images however, much more space will be required, and a DVD version will most likely be needed.

It is important that we maintain our commitment to "free information" by providing the downloads at no cost. If we distribute CD/DVDs the goal would be to even ship them for free, but we may have to charge the cost of the materials and shipping.
[edit] Updating
The content on Tolkien Gateway is constantly changing so we will need to make sure the reader has the ability to update to whatever the current version of the encyclopedia is.
