Welcome![edit source]

Hello Henry, and welcome to Tolkien Gateway! I hope you like the place and choose to join our work. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and we look forward to your future edits. By the way, you can sign your name on Talk and vote pages using three tildes, like this: ~~~. Four tildes (~~~~) produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the Council forums, join our chat or ask me on my talk page. Keep up the great work!

On linking[edit source]

As a more or less reply to your post on Narf's talk page: if you want to link to a file (image or sound), or a category, without displaying it, type an ":" before the link: the image Maedhros sketch by the wonderful Ivanneth. Also, you can sign your posts with ~~~~.

And an actual reply to your proposal of giving Ivanneth an article... that's going to be tricky, unless you can think of a way to disambiguate it. -- Ederchil (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 18:33, 8 December 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I hope editing is the way to answer, sorry I'm n00b to wiki ;)
I don't know what do you mean about the links - I see no images enabled, just text with links to image/site and this is what I wanted to add. I didn't mean to hide more information under smaller text as in your example, nor risked to link some different file, so I used only external links. But I finally got what way you add signatures, thank you :)
I see, the name has got more meanings, then we need "Ivanneth the artist" and "Ivanneth the month". Anyway this is one more reason why I'll leave creating that site to more wiki advanced folks :)
BTW, I saw you added copyright notice to my images, thank you. I believe most of artworks here are copyrighted the same way (and it doesn't mean they can't be used according to the fair use law).--Sirielle 19:08, 8 December 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Our copyright system is a wreck at the moment, but you've got to start somewhere. As for Ivanneth, I would propose only "Ivanneth (artist)[former link]", with a Template:Youmay[former link] template on Ivanneth.
On the link: here's the link without the colon:

Here it is with the colon:
the image Maedhros sketch by the wonderful Ivanneth
And to do a so-called "pipelink" (thus, "bla bla"), use the |. It's in uppercase \, usually somewhere near Backspace. -- Ederchil (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 19:30, 8 December 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
OK, this is way to display a thumbnail, good to know, too (as I said I didn't want to add image there, only link). I'll check the template, I can contact her for more images if you want, too. (Why this sarcasm "wonderful Ivanneth"?)
Copyrights - do it similar way as Elfwood does - "copyrighted" statement being default setting - you are using it basing on fair use for educational purposes, but others are warned this is not a public domain. Mind - I am no lawyer, this is how I understand it.--Sirielle 20:10, 8 December 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Why have you marked her bio page as a "stub"? I don't expect there is more to add, unless she'll be willing to do it herself. Other way this is all we know I'm not going to track down her publications in fandom if that was the case.--Sirielle 10:27, 9 December 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Renaming files[edit source]

In short, here's the how-to:

 • upload the image anew, with the correct filename (it would be "Ivanneth - Whoever sketch")
 • tag the other one for deletion, with delete.-- Ederchil (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 08:40, 9 December 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Strange if admin can't rename file name in the system or a used word, it brings a lot of stupid work. One more reason to not upload images which origins you don't know; fair use doesn't work then, either. No "sketch" in name, these drawings are finished pieces. I'll mark images for deletion.--Sirielle 10:24, 9 December 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Aulendur[edit source]

I'm sorry, I doubled a wiki page for Aulendur - now we've got also Aulëndur. Can you fix it please? Redirect 'Aulëndur' to 'Aulendur' maybe? --Sirielle

I've deleted the latter. I didn't verify the spelling, but the ë is only an auslaut in Quenya, so I figured it was wrong. -- Ederchil (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 21:34, 15 August 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That's right, 'ë' isn't in the original. Thank you! --Sirielle

Problem with uploading newer image version[edit source]

I tried to upload a bigger version of the Fangorn picture, where Gwindor is visible:
http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Image:J.R.R._Tolkien_-_Fangorn_Forest.jpg
but got such error:
Error creating thumbnail:
Warning: passthru() has been disabled for security reasons in /home/tolkieng/public_html/w/includes/GlobalFunctions.php on line 2024.
It looks like whever I touch this site I spoil things ;) Sorry! Sirielle 19:23, 7 September 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I've reverted the reupload, for a couple of reasons. One, the image was big enough as it was, and two, now the image is at least showing again. -- Ederchil (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 20:05, 7 September 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hard to notice Gwidor on that one, but if script is revolting then be it.Sirielle 20:49, 7 September 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It sounds like I just need to modify the configuration with the new host, I'll do some testing and report back once it is fixed. Thanks for finding the bug. --Hyarion 01:13, 8 September 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Error[edit source]

Each time I try to do something (upload newer image for example) I get Internal error: The upload directory (public) is not writable by the webserver. Last time I couldn't update this section, too, nor wiki. Today my talk works.

Uploads aren't working at all at the moment, unfortunately. I hope Hyarion can get that fixed soon. I don't know about the other thing. Sometimes the server used to go down for a while, but it hasn't been doing that for me lately (that was what the server move was for, I gather). —Aulë the Smith (Tk·Cb) 15:52, 22 August 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you for the information. Then we need to wait for finalizing of the server move. Sirielle 20:17, 1 September 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Actually image uploading was re-enabled just the other day. —Aulë the Smith (Tk·Cb) 20:18, 1 September 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Great! Then I can update my images. Sirielle 20:23, 1 September 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Meeting - Sunday 5th September[edit source]

Hi, Sirielle! Just a quick message to inform you that we are holding our next Meeting on Sunday, 5th September 2010 at 7pm UTC. Whether you are or aren't able to attend, please sign your name on the here. Hope to see you on Sunday! --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 19:38, 30 August 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi, Mith! Thank you for the info, but the most probably I will not be attending. Since there is no "not attending" list I'm answering here. I edit wiki rarely, just from time to time when I see something needing an update.Sirielle 20:22, 1 September 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That's OK - but you don't have you to be here every day with thousands of edits in order to attend the meetings. Anyway, thanks for letting me know! --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 20:29, 1 September 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Deviantart Tolkien Illustrator's kit[edit source]

I noted an error in the list: The description about Olwë is not found in War of the Jewels, but in Morgoth's Ring (p. 163).--Morgan 22:25, 20 November 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thank you Morgan, I will correct it. If you have any other remarks let me know :) Sirielle 20:10, 23 November 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Linking your name[edit source]

Hello! I noticed that in the articles about Aiglos you put links to others's names, but not to yours. If you want to put a link you can do it this way: Sirielle and the word will link to your user page. Hope this helps. Sage 10:05, 1 September 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thank you Sage, I wasn't sure if I should do it since this is a user page. Also I didn't know the code linking to user page. Now as you gave it I linked my profile, only masked url with my full name. So it's done. Sirielle 11:00, 1 September 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

English journal articles titles[edit source]

I was looking at one of the articles about the Aiglos issues. It says that it's a Polish-language issue but the articles names appear with English titles in the contents list. As a reader, it's confusing if this was translated by an editor at TG, if it's "official" translations emanating from the journal itself, or even if there's an English version of the journal. Perhaps we could add something like "Article titles translated from Polish" (if this is the case), or something similar. What do you think? --Morgan 21:45, 1 September 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yes, we could think of a way to stress that only the titles have been translated. This is one of reasons I give information that it is a regular Polish language issue, though only the Special Issues are irregular. But I gave links to the Polish and English descriptions of the issue contents at the official Aiglos' site, so this should make thinks clear. They are both given as references and the English version in the external links. The translations have been done by editors and posted on our page when said issue has been published. We can add information, as you say, only where? In the general description?--Sirielle 21:58, 1 September 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I added info "Article titles in translation from Polish by the Aiglos' editors." right after the "Contents" header.--Sirielle 22:13, 1 September 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ah, it seems like we were working on the issue at the same time! :) I toyed with making a template which could be added to each of these articles. Then we wouldn't have to individually change the wording (if we come up with something different). But what you added to the articles is great -- just let me know if you rather want this as a template; otherwise I'll delete the template.--Morgan 22:21, 1 September 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It would be great to have a template for Aiglos. I noticed Mallorn (journal) had it's own and some information was added right away with it. I was looking at templates section today, but I lack knowledge to make one. There are still 19 Polish language issues of Aiglos to add (with time), so a template would be a great help.--Sirielle 22:26, 1 September 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Perfect, I'll change the translation part to a template then. I'll also make a navigation template for the issues of Aiglos.--Morgan 22:31, 1 September 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you very much! --Sirielle 22:43, 1 September 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Just let me know if you have any questions or suggestions about the templates.--Morgan 23:18, 1 September 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you, this will be helpful! How to add this: 20 for the Aiglos Special Issue II? Also we'll have to change Aiglos Special Issue I into Aiglos Special Issue, I'm waiting for the final confirmation from the other editors.--Sirielle 23:34, 1 September 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Was the Special Issue printed instead of a regular issue (i.e., if the special issue breaks the numbering)? If not, it would perhaps be easiest to add it to "See also" or just as a link in the main article about Aiglos, I believe.--Morgan 23:41, 1 September 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
No, it was an extra issue. I will add it to "See also", good idea.--Sirielle 10:40, 2 September 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Return[edit source]

Hello and welcome back here, to TG. --Γιάννης Ευαγγελίου (talk) 22:31, 2 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello Γιάννης Ευαγγελίου and thank you for the welcome. I come back now and then, when I have anything to add. There are some unfinished projects I started here, but time doesn't want to stretch. Sirielle (talk) 22:33, 5 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
