War of Words: Soldier-Poets of the Somme

From Tolkien Gateway

War of Words: Soldier-Poets of the Somme is a documentary, first aired on BBC Two on 15 November 2014 as part of the centenary anniversary of World War I.

The documentary features vignettes on poets who fought in the Battle of the Somme: Siegfried Sassoon, Robert Graves, David Jones, Isaac Rosenberg and J.R.R. Tolkien. Tolkien's vignette, with commentary from John Garth, recounts his involvement in the battles around Thiepval Wood. It also highlights the influences the war had on the Fall of Gondolin, the Dead Marshes, and the eternal conflict of good versus evil.
