The Three Rings were magical artefacts, three of the Rings of Power. They were forged by Celebrimbor and his smiths with the desire of "understanding, making, and healing" and granted the power to preserve all things unstained. They were named Vilya, Narya, and Nenya after the principal elements of air, fire, and water (respectively).

Whereas the other Rings of Power gave the power to control and conquer, and made their wearers invisible, the Three were different. Sauron did not assist in their making nor ever did he touch them, and his taint was not directly upon them. But, as they were created according to the craft taught by him, they would fall under the power of the One Ring.

Names and descriptions
* Nenya, the Ring of Adamant and the Ring of Water, was made of mithril with a stone of adamant; it was the chief of the Three, originally — and only ever — worn by Galadriel.
* Vilya, the Ring of Sapphire, Blue Ring, and the Ring of Air, and mightiest of the Three, a ring of gold with a sapphire stone, originally worn by Gil-galad but given to Elrond.

The Rings were named after the three principal elements, each matching the colour of their stones. They were originally given to the three greatest Eldar in Middle-earth at that time. Their names also match the fates of the three Silmarils. However, not much is known about their specific powers and whether they had anything to do with each element.

History
After "Annatar" taught and assisted the Gwaith-i-Mirdain with creating the Rings of Power, he left Eregion. Celebrimbor proceeded then to forge three more alone with the knowledge already gained from him. Their forging was completed by around 1590. Annatar did not learn about them, and they were "unsullied", free from Sauron's corrupting influence.

When Sauron created the One Ring, the Elves who wore the Rings of Power heard his voice, realized they had been deceived, and took off their rings.

As the Elves failed him, Sauron waged war against Eregion in 1693. Celebrimbor immediately sent his three rings away for safekeeping: he gave Nenya to Galadriel in Lothlórien, who advised him to send the other two to Lindon, away from Sauron, so he gave Vilya to High King Gil-galad and Narya to Círdan.

Sauron succeeded in claiming the Rings of Power. But the Three remained outside his grasp and their whereabouts were seldom revealed.

After Sauron's defeat in the War of the Last Alliance at the end of the Second Age, the Keepers of the Three Rings were free to wear them. During the Third Age, the Rings were not idle. They were used to create enclaves of peace and protection where memory and beauty were preserved from wear and decay.

During the War of the Ring, Frodo Baggins found out that Galadriel held Nenya, using it to preserve Lothlórien from withering, and Aragorn reprimanded him for revealing this. The other two rings were revealed at the end of the Third Age, after Frodo destroyed the One Ring, and the Dark Lord Sauron was completely overthrown. It transpired that Elrond had wielded Vilya and presumably used its powers to keep Rivendell a haven safe from attack. It was Gandalf who wielded Narya, given to him by Círdan.

After the destruction of the One Ring, their power diminished, and the Three became plain relics. Not being able to hold back time and preserve the High-elven lore and beauty, their bearers, in the Last Riding of the Keepers, left Middle-earth on the White Ship. The Third Age ended and the Dominion of Men began.
::The Three Rings first concept was a crown, as they needed something circular to keep the power going, but as the mithril needed was not enough, the concept changed to something even smaller: two rings of power. After Galadriel finds Halbrand to be Sauron, she asks Celebrimbor to make another ring. Galadriel says "one will corrupt", Elrond says "Two will divide" and Celebrimbor says "3 will balance." Celebrimbor reveals that the mithril will not connect with the lesser ores, and says that he needs Gold and Silver from Valinor. Galadriel's sword has these materials, where Galadriel knows she must give up her sword. The Scene continues with the melting of Galadriel's sword, as Galadriel says the power we crafted here. The melted sword comes out of the Furnace with Elrond dropping his gift of Mithril into it. The mithril melts, and a steel cup is used to take the materials. The cup is split in two, revealing three small parts. These parts would be taken by the Gwaith-i-Mírdain, and forged into the Three Rings. Narya is shown as her jewel is put into the Ring. After Elrond comes into the Tower, he sees the Three Rings forged. Celebrimbor appears proud at his creations.
Tradition of Isildur
The Tradition of Isildur was a tradition for the Kings of Gondor to bring their heirs to the Tomb of Elendil.

History
The Tomb of Elendil was a tomb built by Isildur sometime between 3441 to 2 , on the hill of Eilenaer. In an oval lawn upon the summit of the hill, on the eastern side, was placed a low mound which in time became covered with alfirin. Before the mound was a black stone with the letters lambe, ando, lambe engraved upon it.

Its location was a secret kept for many centuries among the Kings of Gondor and the Stewards. At Isildur's command, the hill would be a hallow and none would disturb it other than a heir of Elendil. Aside from visiting the tomb from time to time for wisdom in dark days or in days of distress, the Kings of Gondor would bring their fully grown heirs to the tomb, where they would tell them of the making of the tomb, and of matters of which they should know. After the Death of Eärnur, presumably by the Witch King, The Ruling Stewards, now given the full authority and power of the King, would be allowed to visit the tomb, though they seldom did. Cirion would bring Eorl the Young to the tomb of Elendil, where they would swore the Oath of Eorl and Oath of Cirion respectively. This forged the Alliance between Gondor and the new formed Rohan.

After this, Cirion determined that the Tradition of Isildur was now made futile, and the Hallow was now no longer at the "midpoint" of Gondor. Also Gondor was no longer the same kingdom as when Isildur spoke. The Tomb of Elendil was removed to Minas Anor, where it would still dwell for the Rest of the Third Age.
