Bombur is a fat Dwarf who accompanies Thorin Oakenshield and Bilbo Baggins on their journey to Erebor. His brother Bofur and cousin Bifur also joined the quest.

"Poor, fat" Bombur is frequently described as foolish and being the last for everything. Because he counts for two, he is the last to enter Beorn's house and the last to cross the enchanted river in Mirkwood. And he makes mistakes when he is last: He tumbles with Bifur and Bofur onto Thorin when they enter Bag End last, he enters Beorn's house earlier than intended, and he also slips into the enchanted river (and falls asleep). He chooses to stay and guard the supplies camp while the others move up Erebor because he trusts neither mountain paths nor ropes. Later though, he is forced to use the ropes to escape the rampaging dragon Smaug.

Bombur sleeps at several key moments in the book. When he trips into the Mirkwood river, he falls under a spell that makes him sleep for days, burdening the others with his weight as they walked on. And while he is on a midnight lookout in the fortified Erebor, Bilbo promises to keep watch so that he can sleep in the warmth (Bilbo used this opportunity to sneak the Arkenstone out of the mountain). Incidentally, he was asleep when they opened his barrel after escaping the Elves of Mirkwood and also when Bilbo discovered the secret entrance to Erebor.

In The Lord of the Rings, many years later, Frodo Baggins inquires after Bombur and learns that he has grown so fat it takes six Dwarves to lift him. Its possible but unlikely that Bombur fought in the Battle of Dale during the War of the Ring.

Bombur descended from Dwarves of Khazad-dum, but was not among Durin's folk, so he was either from the Firebeards or Broadbeams Houses. Since the population of these houses was located in Khazad-dûm up until Durin's Bane awoke.

Ori was a Dwarf of the House of Durin, and brother to Nori and Dori. And a distant kinsman to Thorin Oakenshield. He wore a grey hood, played the flute, and wrote both well and quickly in large, bold hand and often used Elvish script.

The Quest of Erebor
In 2941, Ori (and his brothers) were selected to accompany their King Thorin Oakenshield on the Quest of Erebor, in which they were assisted by the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins.
He later fought and survived the Battle of Five Armies, was given his share of the treasure by Dáin II Ironfoot. And settled in the mountain of Erebor.

Expedition to Moria
forty eight years later Ori traveled with Balin, and Óin (also members of Thorin and Company) and a colony of Dwarves on a disasterous attempt to reclaim their ancient mansions of Khazad-dûm which were already occupied by the Goblins.
At first they colony did well, but less than five years later Balin was killed, Orc reinforcements came south and took the East-gate, and Óin's group he took west to Hollin gate was destroyed except for a few.

Four years later Ori, wrote the last pages in the Book of Mazarbul before him, and the last few remaining Dwarves perished during a final stand inside the Chamber of Mazarbul.

Aftermath
During the War of the Ring, the Fellowship of the Ring journeyed through Moria and discovered the book that contained the records of the expedition written by Ori.
