'''Elenwë''' ([[Quenya|Q]], pron. {{IPA|[eˈlenwe]}}) was the wife of [[Turgon]] and mother of [[Idril|Idril Celebrindal]]. She was one of the [[Vanyar]], and her golden hair passed to her daughter.<ref>{{S|14}}</ref>

She followed her family to the departure of the [[Noldor|Ñoldor]] from [[Aman]]. After [[Fëanor]] and his sons departed using the only ships, [[Fingolfin]] and [[Turgon]] took their people across the dangerous [[Helcaraxë]], during which Elenwe was lost in the crossing, right before the [[Noldor]] returned to [[Middle-earth]].<ref>{{S|9}}</ref><ref>{{S|16}}</ref>

Elenwë is the only documented full Vanya who accompanied the [[Flight of the Noldor]] and came under the [[Doom of Mandos]]. But because of her death she did not reach [[Middle-earth]], so no known full Vanya is specifically known to have stepped foot on Middle-earth alive since leaving it after the [[Great Journey]], excepting only as part of the Valinorean army which destroyed most of Beleriand in the final drive to conquer Morgoth. All Vanyar who participated in that battle then went home to Valinor.

==Etymology==
The name contains ''[[elen]]'' meaning "star". The ending ''[[-wë]]'' means "person"<ref>{{HM|PM}} p.340</ref><ref>{{HM|WJ}} p.399</ref> and is peculiar since it is seen mostly in masculine names.

==In Other Versions of the Legendarium==
Originally the name of [[Turgon]]'s wife was ''Alairë'' - later corrected by [[J.R.R. Tolkien|Tolkien]] in [[1970]] to ''Anairë'' - who would not leave [[Valinor]]. [[Anairë]] became [[Fingolfin]]'s spouse whilst Elenwë became Turgon's in genealogies.<ref name="WJ">{{WJ|Maeglin}}, p. 323</ref>
