The Fellowship of the Ring, also known as the Company of the Ring, was formed from nine members of the Free Peoples. Its purpose was to take the One Ring to Mordor, the only place where it could be destroyed.

Members
* Gandalf the Grey — One of the Wizards sent to Middle-earth by the Valar. He was the leader of the Fellowship.
* Aragorn, son of Arathorn — The Chieftain of the Dúnedain and the last heir to the throne of Gondor and Arnor.
* Boromir, son of Denethor — Captain-general of Gondor and next-in-line to be the Ruling Steward of Gondor.
* Legolas, son of King Thranduil of the Wood Elves — Emissary of the Elves of Mirkwood, and Prince of Mirkwood.
* Gimli, son of Gloin — A Dwarf of the Lonely Mountain.
* Frodo Baggins — A Hobbit from the Shire, he was chosen to carry the One Ring.
* Samwise Gamgee — A Hobbit, he was Frodo's gardener, servant and close friend.
* Meriadoc "Merry" Brandybuck — A Hobbit and cousin of Frodo, he and Pippin were best friends.
* Peregrin "Pippin" Took — A Hobbit and also a cousin of Frodo, he was the youngest of the Fellowship.

History
The Fellowship of the Ring was formed in Rivendell with the purpose to destroy the One Ring in any possible way. It was decided that nine walkers should contrast the nine riders of Sauron.

The Fellowship had no stable plan. One option was to go directly to Mount Doom, the other was to ask help from Boromir's father, Denethor II. Whatever the aim, the Ring-bearer should be Frodo and Gandalf was the leader.

The way of how to reach the East was a problem. After moving south from Rivendell, encountering crebain and wolves, they had to pass the Misty Mountains; Boromir proposed the Gap of Rohan (the way through which he arrived to Rivendell), Gandalf insisted to pass through Moria but Aragorn though the Redhorn Pass would be safer. However after attempting in vain to pass the blizzard, they followed Gandalf's opinion.

In Moria however, they found the Orcs who overran Balin's colony years ago. They also saw Durin's Bane, who devastated Moria in the first place. Gandalf to buy them time, destroyed the Bridge of Khazad-dûm and both Maiar fell together into the abyss, while the Company escaped back to the light.

Aragorn was appointed the head of the Company, and their next stop was to meet with Galadriel and Celeborn, the elf-lords of Lothlorien. They stayed there for several days, resting and counseling for their plan and route. On their leave, the elves gave them several useful gifts and gave them boats to sail the Anduin.

Meanwhile, Saruman who served Sauron, sent a band of Uruk-hai to capture the halfling who bore the Ring and bring him to Isengard.

Frodo began to realize the Ring was having a malevolent effect on some members of the party, especially Boromir, who tried to take the ring from him, after the passage through the Argonath. In the process, Frodo put on the ring to escape him, but he was followed by Sam. The rest of the Company was attacked by orcs while trying to find the Ring-bearer. The Orcs succeeded in capturing Merry and Pippin; Boromir fell defending them.

And so, the Fellowship was broken, but not yet disbanded.

Terminology
Though usually called Fellowship of the Ring in adaptations and by fans, the actual term is not used in full until the chapter Many Partings, when Elessar disbands it. In the story itself, they are usually referred to as the Fellowship, the Company of the Ring (more so than Fellowship), and the Nine Walkers (in opposition of the Nine Riders who pursued them).

* Samwise Gamgee — A Hobbit, he was Frodo's gardener and a close friend.

Aragorn was appointed the head of the Company, and their next stop was to meet with Galadriel and Celeborn, the elf lords of Lothlorien.

The Council of Elrond was a council called and led by Elrond, held on October 25, T.A. 3018 in Rivendell. The main purpose of the council was to discuss what should be done with the One Ring, which had resurfaced shortly before.
History
Attendees
The following people are known to have attended the Council:
* Elrond. As convener of the council and de facto ruler of Rivendell, Elrond headed the Council.
* Gandalf, one of the Wizards, was one of the Wise.
* Frodo Baggins, the Ring-bearer, came to Rivendell on the advice of Gandalf.
* Bilbo Baggins, a former Ring-bearer, and the "Ring-finder".
* Glorfindel, a Noldo who had aided Frodo earlier on his travel to Rivendell.
* Erestor, and several unnamed advisors of Elrond's household.
* Aragorn, a Ranger, who had been Frodo's travel companion, guide and aid since Bree.
* Boromir, son of the Steward of Gondor. His brother Faramir had a prophetic dream thrice, and he himself once. It spoke of "the Sword that was broken, "Imladris", "Isildur's Bane" and a "Halfling". In order to find the meaning of the dream, Boromir went to "Imladris" - Rivendell.
* Glóin and his son Gimli were sent by Dáin II Ironfoot to warn Bilbo. Earlier, a messenger from Mordor had appeared at the gate of Erebor, and asked for information of the One Ring. As king Brand of Dale was also encountered, Dáin decided to send messengers to Rivendell.
* Legolas, was sent by his father Thranduil with ill news. Aragorn had placed Gollum in the custody of the Elves of Mirkwood, but after a surprise attack of Orcs, Gollum had managed to escape.
* Galdor of the Havens, a messenger of Círdan who just happened to be present at the time. His role in the Council was no larger than asking a couple of questions.

Events
At the Council, Gandalf, Elrond and Bilbo told the history of the Ring to all. At hearing the potential of "Isildur's Bane", Boromir opted to use the Ring to defend his native Gondor, and overthrow Sauron, its creator. Gandalf and Elrond were against it, and stated that the Ring was the essence of Sauron, and thus would corrupt and ultimately destroy whoever tried to use it. Eventually Gandalf felt it necessary to employ shock tactics by reciting the Ring-inscription in Black Speech, angering Elrond in the process.

Eventually it was decided that the only way to be free of Sauron and the Ring was to cast the Ring into the Crack of Doom in Mount Doom.

It then became necessary to decide who should take responsibility for such a perilous undertaking. Bilbo offered to finish the job he had started, but Gandalf told him he could not take back the Ring. Eventually Frodo surprised everyone including himself by telling them he would take the Ring. After some thought Elrond agreed. At this point Sam emerged from hiding and demanded to accompany Frodo, and since it was hardly possible to separate them Elrond agreed.

Who would further accompany the "Company of the Ring" was the subject of some debate for the following two months, allthough it was clear that Gandalf, Aragorn, Boromir, Gimli and Legolas would join them. Elrond opted for two more; "Nine walkers" would counter the "Nine Riders". He originally intended to send two of his household, such as Glorfindel, but Gandalf opted to send Merry and Pippin instead, as he deemed friendship and loyalty more important than strength.
