Half-elven (Elvish singular Peredhel, plural Peredhil), are the children of the union of Elves and Men. Half-elven are not a distinct race per se.

The half-elven were given a choice to be counted as one of the Eldar (Elves), thus being immortal, or one of the Edain (Men), thus being mortal. In the list below, those who were counted as Eldar are italicized; those who were counted as Edain are not. Their actual mathematical descent from elves is in a fraction in parentheses.

The important half-elven were:
* Dior, son of Man Beren and Elf1 Lúthien, grandson of the Maia Melian. (1/4)
* Eärendil, son of the Man Tuor and Elf Idril (1/2)
* Elwing, daughter of Dior and Elf Nimloth. (5/8)
* Eluréd and Elurín2, sons of Dior and Nimloth. (5/8)
* Elrond, son of Eärendil and Elwing. (9/16)
* Elros, also son of Eärendil and Elwing. (9/16)
* Arwen, daughter of Elrond and Elf Celebrían. (25/32)
* Elladan and Elrohir, sons of Elrond3 and Celebrían. (25/32)
*Galador, son of Imrazôr and Mithrellas4 (1/2)

Eärendil would rather have chosen the kindred of Men, but he chose the Elves for his wife Elwing's sake, who chose the Elves. Eärendil's fate was special however: he was not allowed to stay in Valinor, but had to sail the heavens in his ship Vingilótë, the Silmaril of Beren and Lúthien on the prow, as a sign of hope for Middle-earth. Elwing built a tower in the Shadowy Seas and often met him on his return.

The heirs of Elrond, including Arwen Undómiel, also had the free choice of kindred, therefore Arwen could choose to be counted amongst the Edain even though her father had chosen to be counted as Elven. The heirs of Elros were not given this choice, but their lifespan was enhanced many times that of normal Men. In later times the Númenórean Kings, descendants of Elros, regretted their forefather's choice, and this helped lead to the Downfall of Númenor.

Dior was the son of Beren and Lúthien, and he was therefore also counted as Half-elven, as were his children with the Elf Nimloth of Doriath, Eluréd, Elurín, and Elwing. Eluréd and Elurín were killed, but Elwing was given her choice of kindred. Dior and his descendants also descend from the angelic beings the Maiar, through Dior's grandmother, and Luthien's mother, Melian.

Arwen, daughter of Elrond married Aragorn heir of Elros, and thus the two Half-elven lines were merged in the Fourth Age. Their son Eldarion and their daughters were not counted as Half-elven, but rather as Dúnedain restored.

Notes
#3 Lúthien was considered to be of the Eldar, not the half-elven; however, she was technically half-elven since only her father was an Elf. Her mother, Melian, was one of the Maiar, an angelic holy being. Though she did actually give up her mortality so her husband would be brought back to life, she was still considered one of the Eldar and never of the half-elven or Edain.
#2 Eluréd and Elurín were captured by the servants of Celegorm and abandoned in the forest, thus dying before their decision as to their kindred could be made.
#3 We are not sure of whether Elladan and Elrohir chose to be of the Edain or the Eldar; this information is not given in the books. However, since their choice was expressed by whether they would follow their father to Valinor at the time of his own departure, and they were described as remaining in Rivendell, they are often said to have chosen the Edain.
#4 This is a less known legend, which explains why the Princes of Dol Amroth were of Elven descent, but this (and perhaps other unaccounted instances) are less famous and are not usually mentioned among the half-elven.

Effect
The rings of men (or the nine) gave their wearer powerful magical abilities and made gave them the ability to influence peoples' will. The rings also gave a very long life, but the wearer would begin to feel worn out and eventually fade away into a wraith. The nine kings given the rings turned into ringwraiths because Sauron was able to take control of the rings.

History
The rings were made along with the others in Eregion and were forged by Celebrimbor. The nine were locked away in one of the safes of Eregion, but all of the nine were captured by Sauron, who gave them to nine kings of men, three of which were Numenoreans. The owners of the nine eventually became the Nazgûl.
Thrór (Third Age 2542 – 2790, lived 248 years) was King of Durin's folk for 201 years, from 2589 to 2790. He was the eldest son of Dáin I, and with his younger brother Grór he led his people away from the Grey Mountains after a great Cold-drake killed both his father and brother Frór. Thrór led some of the Dwarves back to Lonely Mountain, where he became King under the Mountain. While Grór continued west with the a great following of Durin's folk to the Iron Hills, where he founded his own realm.

King under the Mountain
At Erebor, Thrór and his people were very prosperous. Gaining the friendship of the Northmen who lived along the river Celduin. These people later founded the town of Dale and had much trade of goods, beautiful trinkets, and weapons with the Dwarves. The Ereborians also had much traffic of ores with their kinsman in the Iron Hills. And the region had peace and prosperity for many years.

In 2770 though their prosperity ended. The Dragon Smaug heard of the wealth of Thrór and his people. And he came south from the Ered Mithrin and sacked the Lonely Mountain, killing many Dwarves. But from the destruction many escaped last of them being Thrór and his son Thráin from the hidden Side Door. So with a small company of kin and faithful followers they made the great wandering south, until they reached the hills of Dunland.

Dunland, and the journey to Moria
In Dunland, his people tried to make a living, but twenty years after the Sack of Erebor
despondent and homeless, Thrór left his people and went north with a single companion, Nár, but not before giving his son Thráin II his Ring of Power, along with the map and key to the Lonely Mountain. Thrór wished to see the fabled city of his ancestors, Khazad-dûm.
Eventally they made it over the Redhorn Pass down into Azanulbizar the Dimrill Dale. And when Thrór came to the East-gate of Moria he found it open. Nár begged him to beware, but he took no he of him, and walked through the gates as the heir who had returned. But he did not come back. Nár stayed nearby for many days in hiding. Then one day he heard a loud shout and the blare of a horn, and a body was flung down the steps . Afraid it was Thrór, he began to creep near, but there came a voice from within the gate saying:
'Come on, beardling! We can see you. But there is no need to be afraid today. We need you as a messenger.'
Then Nár went forward, and found it was the body of the King, but his head was severed and lay face downward on the ground. As he knelt there, he heard Orc-laughter from the gate, and the voice said:
'If beggars will not wait at the door, but sneak in to try thieving, that is what we do to them. If any of your people poke foul beards in here again, they will fare the same. Go and tell them so! But if his family wish to know who is king here, the name is written on his face. I wrote it! I killed him! I am the master!'
Nár then turned the head over and saw branded across his forehead in Dwarvish runes the name AZOG. Nár crouched to take it, but Azog said:
'Drop it! Be off! Here's your fee, beggar-beard.'
The Orc then through a small purse of silver coins at him. Weeping, Nár fled weeping as he went down the Silverlode, but not before looking back and seeing the Orcs emerging and hacking Thrór's body into pieces and throwing them to the crows.

Aftermath
When Nár told Thráin what had happened, he declared war on the Orcs and called all the Seven Houses together for vengeance.
Nine years later at the Battle of Azanulbizar, the climax of the War of the Dwarves and Orcs the Thrór was avenged, and Thráin took the Azog's severed head and shoved the purse of coins into his mouth then set it on a stake.
Ereinion Gil-galad was the sixth and last High King of the Noldor. He was the son of Orodreth (in the Silmarillion he is the son of Fingon), who was in turn the son of Angrod of Finarfin's house. Gil-galad was born in Beleriand late in the First Age, and was still a child at the time of the Dagor Bragollach where his grandfather Angrod was killed; therefore his father sent him to Círdan at the Havens of the Falas for safekeeping when Morgoth broke the Siege of Angband in that battle. Gil-galad was a descendant of the Noldor, Teleri and Vanyar. Teleri from his great-grandmother Eärwen who was the daughter of Olwë and Vanyarin from his Great-Great-grandmother Indis. Nonetheless, he was counted among the Noldor.

History
Fingon fell in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, and the crown passed to Turgon in Gondolin. When Gondolin was lost, Gil-galad received the Kingship of the Noldor, as his father had been killed in Nargothrond. He dwelt with the Exiles of the city at the Mouths of Sirion during the remainder of the First Age.

After the destruction of Beleriand during the War of Wrath, Gil-galad founded a kingdom in Lindon in the far northwest of Middle-earth, between the Blue Mountains and the Great Sea. There he and his people prospered, until Sauron returned; he came first to Lindon in the form of Annatar, the "Lord of Gifts", but Gil-galad and Elrond rejected him. Soon after, the One Ring was forged, and War of the Elves and Sauron began. Once Eregion fell to Sauron, Gil-Galad received the Elven Rings Narya and Vilya, while the third ring, Nenya was given to Galadriel. He would later give Narya to Cirdan and after his death Vilya passed to Elrond.

After the Downfall of Númenor, Elendil and his sons came to Middle-earth and formed an alliance with Gil-galad, the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. They marched on Mordor and besieged Sauron's Dark Tower. Sauron was defeated, but Gil-galad met his death in that war. According to the laws of succession, Elrond should have become the next High King of the Noldor, but he refused the crown, and Gil-galad became the last King of the Noldor in Middle-earth.

Gil-galad's weapon was the spear Aeglos.
Other Versions of the Legendarium
Originally in The Silmarillion, Gil-galad was the son of Finrod Felagund. In the Grey Annals, however, Felagund had no son, leaving his wife in Tirion at the Flight of the Noldor. Later writings, specifically the Shibboleth of Fëanor, presents the fact that Gil-galad was the son of Orodreth, who was in fact the son of Angrod. In The Silmarillion and the Unfinished Tales Gil-galad is said to have been the son of Fingon. However, Christopher Tolkien later admitted that it was not so and that Gil-galad was Orodreth's son in the original manuscripts written by his father.
Etymology
Gil-galad was his mother-name, meaning "Starlight" in Sindarin (from gîl = "star" and galad = "radiance"). It was his preferred name in his youth. His father-name was Rodnor. As High King of the Noldor, his epessë was Ereinion, "Scion of Kings" (from erain = "kings" and ion = "son").

Sons of Fëanor were the seven Noldorin Elves: Maedhros, Maglor, Celegorm, Caranthir, Curufin, Amrod and Amras. They took the Oath of Fëanor with their father, and pursued it after his death in the Dagor-nuin-Giliath. They held lands in East Beleriand, with Maedhros and Maglor holding the immediate passes south of Lothlann, and the other brothers ruling lands behind their guard to the south. Their Sindarin names are the ones usually given.

Fëanor's sons were in general allied with the other Elves of Beleriand against the power of Morgoth. After the recovery of one of the Great Jewels by Beren and Lúthien, however, the Oath of their father came into action, and they fell upon the other Elves in hope of retrieving the Silmaril. They attacked Dior in Doriath, and the Exiles of Gondolin at the Mouths of Sirion, but neither of these forays gained them the Jewel; it was borne into the West by Eärendil.

At the time of the War of Wrath, only two of the seven sons remained, Maedhros and Maglor. They stole the last two Silmarils from the camp of Eönwë, but their evil deeds in recovering them meant that the hallowed Jewels rejected their claimants. Maedhros in anguish threw himself into a fiery fissure, and Maglor in despair cast his Jewel into the Great Sea.
