* Over 500 articles and a day later I've now completed the redirect pages. Searching or even making a [[Numenor]] link will redirect to the correct accented article.
* I'm still debating switching the main page to be simply a [http://tolkiengateway.net/search/ Search Page]. I like the idea of having a simplistic Google-like look, but I think the lack of news/information on the main page might not be liked. What do you guys think?
* I think I've decided to go through ''every'' article that has an accent and create a non-accented redirect to it. Search results do not display the correct results for something like "Numenor" since there are technically accents on the word. Creating the redirects will allow someone to search for "Numenor" and simply be redirected to the correct page. I've whined to the MediaWiki staff about creating an extension but it's just going to be too much work to do it like Google and even Wikipedia uses the redirect idea.
* Congratulations everyone, we have now surpassed 10,000 edits!
* I've altered the left navigation menu to display only alphabetical links. The old links were not fully completed even though the articles were written. I think this way people will be able to see how large our database is more efficiently. What do you guys think? Feel free to post on the discussion page.

This help page is under construction. But for the time being, just use the search on the left side to find what you are looking for, or check out the [[Special:Recentchanges|Recent changes]] to see what has been updated recently. If you want to test out editing pages please use our [[Tolkien_Gateway:Sandbox|Sandbox]] to do so.

==How do I create a new article?==
Your best option is to click a red link, you will be directed to the edit page, add your content, click save, and you are good to go.

If you know of a page you want to create but there are no links to it, simply point your browser to http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Title of Page, you will be brought to a new page (hopefully without any content in it yet), just click the edit button and edit away.

===Articles about characters===
When creating or editing an article about a character in [[Arda]] please start with '''Character Name''' and then begin your description. Please also tell us where the name comes from and what it means in other languages, as well as what other names the character goes by. As well as their lineage and family tree.

==Can I create articles about me or that are my own personal views?==
Of course! Registered users have something similar to a 'Folder' for creating these articles. Instead of writing the article in the main namespace, just type User:YourUserName/Your_Article_Name. This seperates opinionated articles from factual articles.
* An example being if I want to write a fan fiction about [[Beren]] and [[Lúthien]], I'll write it in [[User:Hyarion/Beren_and_Luthien]], then maybe on the [[Beren and Luthien]] or the [[Fan Fictions]] page I'll link to my story.

==Spoilers==
For people who have yet to finish reading [[The Hobbit]], [[The Lord of the Rings]], [[Unfinished Tales]], or even [[The History of Middle-earth]], be careful when reading through this site, there are quite a bit of spoilers depending on what you do not know. We don't want to reveal that [[Frodo Baggins]] falls into [[Mount Doom]] to someone who has not finished The Lord of the Rings and ruin the book for them now do we!

==Links==
Due to excessive spamming of links we have added rel=nofollow to any external link, which means when search engines browse the site you will not gain PageRank or higher ranking status on any search engine for placing your link here. This being said, as long as you're link is valid and relevant you will of course recieve increased traffic because the link is visible.

==Misc. Tips==
* When using the article's title in the article first bold it, '''Article Name''', then Italicize it, ''Article Name'', then just leave the article name normal.
* When linking to articles you only need to link the first usage. If you continue to use the term [[Silmarils]] for example, there is no need to link all instances of it because it becomes excessive and unnecessary.

==Editing==
===Adding new lines===
* Just hit enter twice
* Use <nowiki><br /></nowiki> (this is XHTML compliant)

==Image Guidelines==
* Uploaded images must be related to [[J.R.R. Tolkien]] and his works.
* Images may contain personal images as long as they are related to J.R.R. Tolkien.
** An example being images of your collection of [[Sideshow Weta]] merchandise is fine.
** A bad example being images of your backyard.
* At present we allow 1-2 images of yourself to be uploaded for use in your profile.
* We are not an image storage site however and images found to be uploaded simply for remote linking will be removed. We are however fine with remote linking to an existing image to an extent. And you are always free to copy the image for yourself as our main goal is spreading the information.
* We are currently fairly lenient on the file size of imagse. If the image is above our maximum file size limit (you will see this after clicking the upload button) simply click save anyway. Keep in mind there is no need for extensive quality as our images are used primarily in articles.
* Maps are currently not allowed at this time.
* Please make sure the image you are going to upload is fairly good quality, we want to offer the best (to an extent) quality for our visitors.
==History==

Like [[Arnor]] to the north, Gondor is a human kingdom founded by [[Isildur]] and [[Anárion son of Elendil|Anárion]], the sons of [[Elendil]], after the [[Downfall of Númenor|Downfall]] of [[Númenor]]. It was located to the south of [[Rohan]] and to the west of [[Mordor]], on the [[Bay of Belfalas]]. Its name means "Land of Stone", from [[Sindarin]] '''gond''' (stone) '''(n)dor''' (land), most likely given to it because of the [[Ered Nimrais]] and other mountain chains in the land (hypothetical [[Quenya]] name '''Ondonórë''').

===Early History===

Before the Downfall of Númenor, Gondor was home to many Númenórean colonists, who either mixed blood with the indigenous [[Middle Men]] if they were friendly, or dispersed them into [[Ras Morthil]], [[Dunland]], and [[Drúadan Forest]]. Gondor, at a latitude comparable to Venice, was a more fertile region than Arnor to the north, and therefore it already had a larger population before the ships of Elendil's sons arrived, including a well-established city, [[Pelargir]].

The [[Elendili]] from Númenor proper were given a warm reception upon their arrival by those that had already colonized Middle-earth, including a colonial branch of Númenórean royalty at Dor~In~Ernil. The colonists north of [[Anduin]] accepted Elendil's claim to kingship over them. South of the Great River, however, the newly exiled Númenóreans did not recognize Elendil's claim.

Gondor was being founded after Númenor's population had already split between the Elendili and [[King's Men]], and all of the more southern colonies (such as [[Umbar]]) remained enemies of the Elendili.

The newly founded kingdom of Gondor was then part of the [[Last Alliance of Elves and Men]] which overthrew [[Sauron]] for the first time at the very end of the Second Age.

====Gondor Prospers====

After the war Gondor's power and wealth grew steadily (only interrupted by an [[Easterlings|Easterling]] invasion in 492 [[Third Age]]). Its power would continue to grow into the 9th century of the Third Age. While the power of Gondor's sister kingdom [[Arnor]] peaked during the 9th century, when it broke into various successor states, Gondor's greatest glory was yet to come.

====Gondor's Golden Age====

Gondor's power reached its Golden Age under the four "[[Ship-kings]]":
As with ''[[Hobbit]]'', ''Ent'' is a term that in modern times is almost exclusively connected with [[J.R.R. Tolkien]], and the usage of the term seldom evokes in people its earlier meanings.

Ents are a very old race that appeared in [[Middle-earth]] when the [[Elves]] did. They were apparently created by [[Ilúvatar|Eru Ilúvatar]] at the behest of [[Yavanna]], after she learned that [[Aulë]]'s children, the [[Dwarves]], were wont to fell trees. Ents were envisioned as Shepherds of the Trees, to protect the forests from [[Orcs]], Dwarves and other perils. The Elves have tales of teaching the trees to talk, and they also taught the Ents to talk: although the Ents were sentient beings at the time, they did not know how to speak until the Elves taught them. [[Treebeard]] said of the Elves "curing the Ents of their dumbness" that it was a great gift that could not be forgotten ("always wanted to talk to everything, the old Elves did").

Ents are tree-like creatures, having become like the trees that they shepherd. They vary in traits, from everything to height and size, colouring, and the number of fingers and toes. An individual Ent more or less resembles the specific species of tree that they typically guard. For example, [[Quickbeam]] guarded Rowan trees and thus looked very much like a Rowan (tall and slender, etc.). In the [[Third Age]] of Middle-earth, the [[Fangorn Forest|forest of Fangorn]] was apparently the only place Ents still inhabited, although the Ent-like [[Huorns]] may still have survived elsewhere, as in the Old Forest.

=== History ===

Almost nothing is known of the early history of the Ents

'''Aman''' ("blessed realm") is a continent that lies to the west of [[Middle-earth]], across the great ocean [[Belegaer]]. It is the home of the [[Valar]], and three kindreds of [[Elves]]: the [[Vanyar]], some of the [[Ñoldor]], and some of the [[Teleri]]. The island of [[Tol Eressëa]] lies just off the eastern shore.

Upon the destruction of [[Almaren]] in very ancient times, the [[Valar]] fled to [[Aman]], and there established the realm of [[Valinor]]. Seeking to isolate themselves, they raised a great mountain fence, called the [[Pelóri]], on the eastern coast, and set the [[Enchanted Isles]] in the ocean to prevent travelers by sea from reaching [[Aman]].

For reasons unknown, the Valar left two lands outside the wall of the Pelóri: [[Araman]] to the northeast and [[Avathar]] to the southeast. [[Ungoliant]], a great spider of unknown origin, had managed to escape notice in Avathar. When [[Melkor]] was released from his captivity, he fled to Avathar, scaled the mountains with Ungoliant's help, and wrought destruction of great consequence in Aman.

The first navigator to succeed in passing the [[Isles of Enchantment]] was [[Eärendil]], who came to [[Valinor]] to seek the aid of the [[Valar]] against [[Melkor]], now called ''Morgoth''. His quest was successful, the [[Valar]] went to war again, and also decided to remove the Isles.

Soon after this, the great island of [[Númenor]] was raised out of [[Belegaer]], close to the shores of [[Aman]], and the Three Houses of the [[Edain]] were brought to live there. Henceforth, they were called the [[Dúnedain]], or ''Men of the West'', and were blessed with many gifts by the Valar and the [[Elves]] of [[Tol Eressëa]].
