The Angbor was a stone in the forests of Brethil. It was the place where trails of law were held by the Haladin. During such trails, the Chieftain of the Haladin or Haldad would sit on the stone itself. Its only appearence comes in the Wanderings of Húrin where the trial of Húrin on the charge of assaulting the Haldad takes place and turns into a riot, largely ending the Haladin's existance as a coherent people.

Míriel Serindë, also spelled Þerindë, was the first wife of Finwë, King of the Noldor. Her son was Curufinwë, whom she called Fëanáro, which means "Spirit of Fire". Miriel's hair was described as being silver in appearance, an unusual color for one of the Noldor.

History
Míriel lived in the blessed realm of Aman, in the city of Tirion on the Tuna hill, together with her husband. Her hands were skilled in the shaping of fine things, and she was unsurpassed in weaving and needlework.

There was much love between her and Finwë, and even more for her son, but after giving birth to Fëanor, her body and her spirit were consumed and she wished to be released from life, by saying that there was no strength left in her to bear another son. What would have been enough for other children, had been all given to Fëanor. Despite Finwë's grief, and her unhappiness to leaver her young child, Míriel departed for the gardens of Lórien, where she was supposed to be asleep for a shortwhile, until her strength would be regained.

But during her rest, the fëa departed from her body, and she entered the Halls of Mandos, where the maidens of Estë took care of her body, so that it would not whither. In essence, she had died of free will. This was seen as a shocking event by the Valar, and Manwë allowed Finwë to take another wife.

After Finwë had been killed, Míriel was granted permission to return to life, where she entered the service of Vairë, her task to weave all the deeds of the House of Finwë in the Tapestry of Time.

Etymology
The name Míriel means "Jewel-daughter" in Quenya, from mîr ("jewel") and -iel ("daughter"). Her epessë Serindë, or Þerindë in the Quenya of Tirion, means "the Broideress", referring to her work for Vairë.

Other versions of the legendarium
In the beginning of The Shibboleth of Fëanor, Fëanor is an adult, and Míriel is still alive. There the similarities between mother and son, such as their stubbornness, are revealed. Fëanor's reaction to his mother's death is also presented, as he guarded her hröa, which was placed in a garden, for some time after her passing. In the published Silmarillion, Míriel died soon after birth.

Ungoliant was an evil spirit in the form of a spider who dwelt in Avathar in the First Age. It is thought that she may have been one of the Maiar whom Melkor corrupted long ago, but she is not listed among the Ainur. It is also said, arguably separately, that she came from the darkness above the skies of Arda, and this reference has led some to believe she may be an incarnation of darkness or emptiness itself, as this seems very consistent with the rest of her character. This has spawned a minor point of dispute, something akin to the Balrog wings argument. The name is pronounced [uŋˈgɔ.li.ant]. In the form Ungoliant the name is technically Sindarin, but is a direct loan from Quenya ungwë + liantë: "dark spider"; the strictly Sindarin form being Delduthling "dark terror spider." She is also called "gloomweaver," Wirilomë in Quenya, Gwerlum in Sindarin.

Ungoliant aided Melkor in his attack on the Two Trees of Valinor; she drained the Trees of their sap and poisoned them after Melkor wounded them, and she drained dry the Wells of Varda, so that nothing remained of the Light that was before Sun or Moon, except in the Silmarils of Fëanor. She and Melkor fled to Middle-earth to escape justice at the hands of the Valar.

Melkor had promised to reward her, "Yea, with both hands", and after their flight from Valinor, the Dark Lord indeed gave her many gems of the Ñoldor, but withheld the Silmarils in his right hand. He refused to give them to the Great Spider to be devoured, for he desired them greatly, and Ungoliant would have slain Melkor in the ensuing battle had not the Balrogs come and saved their master, causing Ungoliant to flee to the Ered Gorgoroth in Beleriand.

While there, she had many offspring, as well as various creatures infesting the Ered Gorgoroth, which came to be a place of horror. The dates of her existence are not precisely known; in The Silmarillion, Quenta Silmarillion, Chapter 9, Of the Flight of the Noldor, we are told that she "went whither she would into the forgotten south of the world" shortly before the First Age, and that "some have said that she ended long ago, when in her uttermost famine she devoured herself at last." In contrast, a rough sketch of Eärendil's voyages by Tolkien suggests that he slew Ungoliant in the south.

The great spiders of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings (including Shelob and the spiders encountered by Bilbo Baggins in Mirkwood) were descendants of Ungoliant.

The name Ungoliant is partly derived from the root ungol ("spider"), which also occurs in Cirith Ungol, where Shelob resided in the Third Age.

The Ered Gorgoroth was the southern edge of the highlands of Dorthonion, and separated Dorthonion and the northlands of Ard-galen from Beleriand proper.

They were named such by the Sindar of Doriath after the spider-creature Ungoliant made it her temporary home, and spawned many evil spiders there, which wove webs that took away all light, and all the springs were poisoned.

South of the Gorgoroth lies the unpopulated land of Nan Dungortheb (the Valley of Dreadful Death).

The Gorgoroth had no known passes, and even the Orcs of Morgoth passed it by. In all of the First Age only Beren son of Barahir is said to have passed the mountain range, and he never spoke of this terrible journey.

Like the rest of Beleriand, the Gorgoroth were drowned during the War of Wrath, although the highland of Dorthonion survived as the isle of Tol Fuin.

24.131.119.74: /* Later History */

The House of Haleth, also known as the Haladin was the second House of the Edain to come over the Ered Luin into Beleriand and survived longest of all three houses, owing to their defensive strategy during The War of the Jewels.

History
The Haladin entered Beleriand in 311 F.A. Unlike The House of Bëor before them and the House of Hador after however they did not advance to Estolad but instead dwelt without leave in the south of Caranthir's realm of Thargelion. The Haladin had no overall leader and so settled in scattered groups in that region. This style of living though came to an end in 375F.A when a host of orcs assaulted their territory. In answer to this Haldad took command of the people, building a stockade between the angle of the rivers Gelion and Ascar south of Sarn Athrad. There he led the defence of his people until he and his son Haldar were slain whereupon his daughter Haleth took up the leadership of the house and held out for a week until Caranthir's army could relieve them. In honour of the valiance of Haleth Caranthir offered the House of Haleth a feif in his lands but Haleth declined and instead led her people away passing through Estolad and Nan Dungortheb before temporarily inhabiting Talath Dirnen and finally moving to the Forest of Brethil where the House of Haleth (as it was now named in their leader's honour) would remain, centered around the capital of Amon Obel.

Eventually Haleth died but as she had produced no heirs the title of Chieftain of the Haladin returned to her brother Haldar's line and to his son Haldan who ruled for 31 years before dying leaving the leadership of the house to his son Halmir. Four years after in 455F.A Morgoth broke the Siege of Angband in the Dagor Bragollach. The House of Haleth played no active part in the battle but fought the hosts of orcs that threatened their realm with the aid of the Sindar of Doriath under Beleg Cúthalion. Both Doriath and Brethil refused to play any great part in the war of the Ñoldor and their allies and only seldom did the House of Haleth march to war alongside them.

Of Halmir's four children, two married into the House of Hador; Haldir, his heir married Hador's daughter Glóredhel, while Hareth married Galdor producing the famed brothers Húrin and Huor, who, in the upheaval following the Bragollach were fostered for a while by Haldir in Brethil.

When the Union of Maedhros was formed, Halmir offered the aid of the House of Haleth and made preparations for war but a year prior to the Nirnaeth Arnoediad he died and the promise was left for his son Haldir to fulfill. Haldir took part in the battle and was slain, alongside his brother Hundar. The son of Haldir Handir took up the leadership but he himself was slain in one of the many orc raids on Brethil at that time and the position passed to his son Brandir.

Later History
After the death of Handir the House of Haleth dwindled and became more reclusive but survived on. It was during the reign of Brandir that Túrin Turambar son of Húrin came to Brethil and became in all but name its leader, leading them in warfare in much the same manner as he had the elves of Nargothrond. Túrin's presence brought the dragon Glaurung to Brethil and though Túrin succeeded in slaying the beast, he slew Brandir in a rage as the final threads sparing him from his doom unravelled. Túrin's suicide ended that period in the history of the Haladin.

But their dealings with Húrin and his cursed kin were not yet over for Húrin himself came among them after twenty eight years of captivity in Angband. Now a broken man he succeeded in sparking a civil war in the House of Haleth owing to his perception of the treatment of his wife whom he found at the grave of their children. Obel Halad was burnt and all potential heirs slain or driven away in the anarchy that followed. In that way did the House of Haleth cease to be in the year 500F.A

Terminology
In the notes to the Wanderings of Húrin in History of Middle-earth XI, Christopher Tolkien points out an interesting usage of the term 'Haladin'. It would seem that Tolkien at some point intended 'Haladin' to refer only to the noble line of the House of Haleth and not the House of Haleth as a whole.

Whether this definition of 'Haladin' would have survived into the final intent is questionable. For the purposes of this article we have taken the more widely used definition of referring to the entire People of Haleth.
