The Battle of Azanulbizar (Third Age 2799) was the penultimate battle in the War of the Dwarves and Orcs. It was fought beneath the East-gate of Moria in the valley of Azanulbizar, called Nanduhirion in Sindarin or Dimrill Dale in Westron. Therefore the event is also known as the Battle of Nanduhirion and the Battle of Dimrill Dale.

Prior to the Battle
The War of the Dwarves and Orcs was started when Azog the Orc-chieftain of Moria captured and mutilated Thrór, King of Durin's folk. Azog carved his own name in runes onto Thrór's severed head, and then let his companion Nár escape so that all Dwarves would know that an Orc now ruled Moria. Full of righteous fury, Thrór's son Thráin II gathered a great army of Dwarves, including those not of Durin's folk (Firebeards and Broadbeams from the Blue Mountains and those from the far East of Middle-earth). For six years they systematically destroyed the Orc-holds of the Misty Mountains, until only Moria was left where those Goblins that survived the destruction fled.

Opposing Forces
The exact number for the Dwarves was not specified, but it can be estimated at being somewhere between six to ten thousand Longbeards, Firebeards, Broadbeams, Ironfists, Stonefoots, Blacklocks, and Stiffbeards.
The Orcs, as stated above, came from Moria, and from as far north of the Misty Mountains as Mount Gundabad. So their numbers can be estimated at fifteen to twenty thousand Orcs.

The Battle
The battle started on a dark day of cold winter with no sun. The Dwarves had marched into the Dimrill Dale where they found the great East-gate and sent up a great noise. They soon discovered that on the western slopes above thousands of Orcs had gathered and more were coming out of the East-gate, outnumbering them and holding the higher ground.

The first Vanguard led by King Thraín, assaulted the slopes but were driven back with loss, into a wood near the Mirrormere, where Frerin youngest son of Thraín was slain along with Fundin, father of Balin, along with many others. Thraín himself was wounded, as well as his eldest son Thorin II Oakenshield. Who's shield was broken during the battle and had to use an oak branch that he hewed off a tree to defend himself.

Elsewhere, the battle swayed to and fro until Náin from the Iron Hills, arrived with a host of fresh troops with him. Naín, and his Dwarves hewed through the Orc lines with their mattocks shouting AZOG! AZOG! AZOG! until they got to the very steps of the gate, in-which Naín called upon Azog to come out and fight. When Azog emerged from the inner gate with his guards, Naín was very tired and half blind with rage and tried to swing as hard as he could at Azog but the orc darted aside, and he missed, which splintered his mattocks on the ground. The orc kicked him in the leg when he dodged the Dwarf's blow, making him stumble, at which Azog tried to decapitate him but Azog only broke Naín's neck because of the strong mail he was wearing, Naín died instantly.
Azog laughed at this, but when he looked out into the valley he found that his entire army was routed. Those that could were fleeing southwards, and all his guards were killed as well. With that he fled back to the gate. But Náin's son, Dáin, leaped up the steps after him with his red axe and just before the gate he hewed off Azog's head, thus ending the war.
He was just 32-years old at the time, very young for a Dwarf, and it was remarked an amazing feat. Dáin would later become King under the Mountain as Dáin II Ironfoot.

Aftermath
The Dwarves were victorious, but with heavy casualties. Half of their forces dead or mortally wounded. But the Orcs casualties were ten thousand.
After the battle, King Thráin wanted to enter and reclaim Moria, the ancestral home of Durin's folk. However, since the Dwarves had taken heavy losses and the Dwarves of the other Houses did not see any benefit in it for them unless they got some treasure from Moria. More significantly, Dáin had peered beyond the East-gate after slaying Azog, and saw that Durin's Bane still lingered within and advised Thráin not to enter.
They then stripped the dead, so the orcs couldn't plunder them, and felled all the trees in the valley which they made many pyres with, and put there dead on them to burn. For they could not bury them all in fashioned tombs of stone, as was their custom for it would take many years. So those that fell in that battle were known proudly as Burned Dwarves.
The Houses then parted ways, returning to their homes to the North, East, and West.

Thráin, with what was left of Durin's folks' forces, went back to Dunland, and shortly afterwards wandered in Eriador till they settled in the Northern Blue Mountains. There Durin's folk regrew slowly in population and waited till the days they could take back the halls of Erebor, and Khazad-dum.

Repercussions
Although the Dwarves suffered heavy casualties, the battle would have lasting repercussions for the Orcs of the Misty Mountains. Their numbers had been severally shrunk after the battle and never fully recovered. If it hadn't been for the battle, Bilbo Baggins and his thirteen Dwarf companions may have never made it to Erebor. The Battle of Five Armies wouldn't have been won buy the army of Elves, Men, and Dwarves. And The Fellowship may have never got through Moria alive.
While the Wainriders assaulted Ithilien from the north, the armies of the Haradrim crossed the Poros and invaded South Ithilien.

The northern assault of the Wainriders was met by the King of Gondor himself, Ondoher, with his two sons Artamir and Faramir. The Easterlings swept through Gondor's defence, cutting down the King and his heirs and routing his army. Their victory complete, and Gondor defenseless before them, the Wainriders paused in North Ithilien to celebrate their conquest.

Their allies in the south had met with much less success. The Gondorian Captain Eärnil had led Gondor's inferior Southern Army to victory over the Haradrim, destroying their army in South Ithilien, to the north of the Poros. After his victory, Eärnil turned north.
Eärnil's army descended on the unprepared Wainriders, driving many of them into the swamplands of the Dead Marshes. The Easterlings, for so long a dreaded enemy of Gondor, did not march against Gondor for hundreds of years afterwards.
The Battle of Fornost was the climatic battle that defeated the Witch-king of Angmar, and his armies.

Leading Up to the Battle
By the year 1975, the kingdom of Arnor had been at war with the land of Angmar for six hundred nineteen years, and In the previous year of 1974, Arnor was destroyed in the Fall of Fornost by the Witch-king's armies. The remnants of it's forces fled west over the river Lune to the realm of Lindon, and it's last king, Arvedui, perished in the Icebay of Forochel in 1975.
Although two years previous, in 1973 Arnor sent a message to King Eärnil II of Gondor that they were in great straits, and that Angmar was preparing it final assault . The King sent his son Prince Eärnur, with a fleet of ships to Lindon to aid Arnor. But it was too late. Before the fleet reached Lindon, which was two years later, Arnor had fallen and its people were taking refuge in the Grey Havens.
When Eärnur reached the Havens there was much joy and wonder among Elves and Men. Because there were so many ships that the fleet could barely find harborage, even after filling Forlond, Harlond, and the Havens; and from them came a large host of Gondor. Which to the Elves and Men seemed like a vast host, when in fact it was just a small force compared to the full might of Gondor. Not just Gondorian soldiers came, many were actually from the realm of Rhovanion with their fair horses from the Anduin Vales.
Círdan who was the Lord of Lindon, summoned all who would from both his realm and the remnants of the Dúnedain of the North. When all the preparations were finished this allied host of Gondor, Lindon, and Arnor marched north across the river Lune, to challenge Witch-king. Who was now dwelling in Fornost, which was populated with his minions, usurping the house and rule of the kings.

The Battle
It didn't take long before news of their march came to the Witch-king. And in his pride he sent his men out to meet them instead of waiting for battle behind his fortress-like city, thinking he could drive them back over the Lune as before.
The Allies had past of over the southern Hills of Evendim when they were met by the forces of Angmar in the plains between Nenuial and Fornost. A great battle began, and when Angmar forces began to retreat back to Fornost. When out of the north came the main body of the Allies' horsemen which had past around the hills came down and scattered in a rout. The Witch-king, with all that he could rally, fled north to the lands of Angmar. But before he could make it to the safety of his old fortress of Carn Dûm he was overtaken by the cavalry of Gondor with Prince Eärnur at its head. At the same time a force led by Glorfindel came up out of Rivendell. Then so utterly was Angmar defeated that not single a Man or Orc of that realm remained west of the Misty Mountains.
When all was lost the Witch-king appeared and singled out Eärnur with all of his hatred, and rode upon him with a cry. The Prince could have withstood him but his horse was so frightened that, while baring him, fled far away before he could master it.
As the Witch-king laughed at this, Glorfindel rode up on his white horse, and in mid laugh the Witch-king fled into the darkness of the night. After hundreds of years the war was over. Eärnur returned, and the Elf-lord said: "Do not pursue him! He will not return to this land. Far off yet is his doom, and not by the hand of man will he fall.".

Aftermath
Thus the North was freed from the evil of realm of Angmar, but Arnor was no more. Those Dúnedain that remained became the Rangers of the North, their first chieftain being Aranarth son of King Arvedui.

The Witch-king eventually made it to Mordor in T.A. 1980, where he gathered the Nazgûl to later in T.A. 2000 siege Minas Ithil. In T.A. 2043, a challenge was issued to King Eärnur who had become king that same year, but the challenge he ignored. Years later in T.A. 2050 a second challenge was sent, and this time Eärnur accepted. He rode alone to Minas Ithil- now Minas Morgul- and was never seen again.
