'''Celegorm the Fair''' was the third son of [[Fëanor]] and [[Nerdanel]], and a constant companion of his younger brother, [[Curufin]].

Celegorm was a great huntsman, and was a friend of the [[Valar|Vala]] [[Oromë]]. From Oromë he learned great skill of birds and beasts, and could understand a number of their languages. He had brought with him from [[Valinor]] the great hound [[Huan]], a gift from Oromë.

==History==

As with the other [[Sons of Fëanor]], Celegorm was bound by an [[Oath of Fëanor|oath]] to recover his father's [[Silmarils]], which had been stolen by the Dark Lord [[Morgoth]]. His oath took him and his brothers to Middle-earth during the First Age where they established realms in exile, waged war against the armies of Morgoth, fought their own Elvish kind, and eventually brought ruin upon themselves.

He dwelt with his brother Curufin in [[Himlad]], a pass that led into Kingdom of [[Doriath]], which the two brothers fortified and held until the [[Dagor Bragollach]]. Following the battle, the two brothers were defeated and had to flee with their people to [[Nargothrond]], where their cousin [[Finrod Felagund]] welcomed them.

While he and his brother Curufin lived in Nargothrond they almost took it over at the departure of Finrod Felagund. They both had great influence, for both were great orators. They captured [[Lúthien Tinúviel]], daughter of King [[Thingol]] of Doriath. Celegorm wished to marry her, thus forcing a bond of kinship with Thingol. Huan, however, broke with his master and helped Lúthien escape. He was expelled from Nargothrond at the order of [[Orodreth of Nargothrond|Orodreth]].

Celegorm fell in the [[Second Kinslaying]], when the [[Sons of Fëanor]] attacked Doriath to seize a Silmaril in the possession of the Elvish King [[Dior Eluchíl]]. Dior and Celegorm slew each other in the halls of [[Menegroth]].

== Etymology ==
Celegorm's [[father-name]] was '''''[[Turcafinwë]]''''', which in [[The Shibboleth of Feanor]] is translated as "Strong, powerful(in body) Finwë". His [[mother-name]] was '''''[[Tyelkormo]]''''', meaning "Hasty-riser" a reference to his quick temper. ''[[Tyelka]]'', in [[Quenya]], is an adjective which means "swift, agile or hasty". The name Celegorm is the [[Sindarin]] version of his [[mother-name]]. The [[Noldorin]] ''[[celeg]]'' has the same meaning as tyelka, as they are both derived from the root ''kyelek''.

==Celegorm's Hair==

There has long been put forth the question as to the nature of Celegorm's hair. Most writings seem to indicate that he had "fair" hair, hence his title "''Celegorm the Fair''". But Tolkien has also remarked numerous times that the [[Noldor]] were accustomed to have dark hair, the only exceptions being when the person in question was descended at least in part from the [[Vanyar]] (for example, [[Idril Celebrindal]] and [[Finarfin]]). Therefor we have only a few options: (1) Celegorm did not have light-colored hair, (2) Celegorm did have light-colored hair. The only way for the latter to be true is either that Nerdanel had traces of Vanyarin blood in her, or that it was not Tolkien's final intent to have all Noldor with dark hair. It is also possible that Tolkien did not examine this point deeply.

== History ==
As the other [[Sons of Fëanor]], Caranthir was bound by an [[Oath of Fëanor|oath]] to recover his father's [[Silmarils]], which had been stolen by the Dark Lord [[Morgoth]]. This oath took the seven brothers to [[Middle-earth]] during the [[First Age]], where they established realms in exile, waged war against the armies of Morgoth, fought their own [[Elvish]] kind, and eventually brought ruin upon themselves.

Caranthir's realm was in [[Thargelion]], and was sometimes called ''[[Dor Caranthir]]'' ("Caranthir's Land"). His abode was on the shores of [[Helevorn|Lake Helevorn]].

In First Age c. 420, Caranthir rescued [[Haleth]] and her people, the [[Haladin]], as they were besieged by [[Orcs]]. When he saw the valor of [[Men]], he offered the Haladin a fiefdom in his lands to the North. However Haleth, wanting her people to serve no lord, thanked him but removed to the [[Forest of Brethil]].

In 463, the [[Easterlings|Easterling]] [[Ulfang]] led his people over the [[Blue Mountains]] and swore allegiance to [[Maedhros]]. They were given land in [[Lothlann]] and became subjects of Caranthir.

In 472, the disaster of the [[Nirnaeth Arnoediad]] ("Battle of Unnumbered Tears") occurred, caused by the betrayal of the people of Ulfang. Caranthir lost his realm and was forced to retreat to [[Mount Dolmed]] with his surviving brothers.

In 505, he perished along with his brothers [[Celegorm]] and [[Curufin]] during the [[Second Kinslaying]], the attack by the Sons of Fëanor on [[Menegroth]] to recover a Silmaril from King [[Dior Eluchíl]] of [[Doriath]].

== Etymology ==

Caranthir's [[father-name]] was ''[[Morifinwë]]'', meaning "Dark [[Finwë]]", a reference to his dark hair. The [[Quenya]] word was formed using the noun ''[[mórë]]'', meaning "blackness", "night" or "dark", which became ''[[mori-]]'' when added to his grandfather's name, Finwë. His [[mother-name]] was ''[[Carnistir]]'', which can be translated as "Red-face". ''[[Carnë]]'' in Quenya means "red" or "scarlet". The name Caranthir is the [[Sindarin]] translation of his mother-name.

==History==

Orodreth held the isle of [[Minas Tirith (Beleriand)|Minas Tirith]] in the vale of [[Sirion]] until [[Sauron]] overran the isle and turned it into [[Tol-in-Gaurhoth]]. Orodreth then fled south to Nargothrond.

When [[Beren Erchamion|Beren]] came to Nargothrond, Finrod went with him on his quest for the [[Silmarils|Silmaril]]. However [[Celegorm]] and [[Curufin]] the [[Sons of Fëanor]] were also at Nargothrond, and forced Finrod to help Beren alone,without his people. Orodreth took up the crown, ruling as regent, but the [[Sons of Fëanor]] held the real power. Curufin called him "a dullard slow" in the [[Lay of Leithian]], and with his brother Celegorm plotted to take over Nargothrond if news came of Finrod's death.

When news came that Finrod had been killed and Sauron's isle destroyed, the Sons of Fëanor lost their power, for the people cried out that a maiden [[Luthien]] had done what the Sons of Fëanor had not (thrown down Sauron). Orodreth, who regained his power, spared their lives but expelled from Nargothrond, and became its leader.

When [[Túrin Turambar]] arrived in Nargothrond he gradually became Orodreth's closest councillor.Turin forced Orodreth and the people of Nargothrond to abandon the secretive warfare and declare open war against [[Morgoth]]. However this led to the destruction of Nargothrond. He later died fighting the hosts of [[Morgoth]] and [[Glaurung]] the [[Dragon]] in the [[Battle of Tumhalad]] before the [[Sack of Nargothrond]].

== Other Versions of the Legendarium ==
In earlier versions of ''[[the Silmarillion]]'' legendarium as detailed in [[the History of Middle-earth]] series, Orodreth was a more important character, and the original king of Nargothrond. However his importance diminished over time.

In the published ''Silmarillion'', Orodreth is a son of Finarfin, with Quenya name '''Artanáro'''. In the earlier version Gil-galad, later High King of the Ñoldor, was his son, but in the published Silmarillion Gil-galad is made into [[Fingon]]'s son instead. An earlier idea was that Orodreth's son was named '''Hallas''', but Gil-galad replaced him. In [[The Children of Húrin]] Orodreth is once again the son of Finarfin, for reasons unstated. One can assume this was so as not to confuse readers already familiar with The Silmarillion.

In his last writings, Tolkien changed Orodreth's name to '''[[Artaher]]''' (Quenya) / '''Arothir''' (Sindarin), but it was never introduced in any narratives, so Christopher Tolkien left the name Orodreth unchanged. It is probable the Sindarin name Orodreth would have been retained nonetheless: Tolkien seldom changed names after they had long been used, even if only in unpublished writings.
