In an older version of [[J.R.R. Tolkien]]'s conception of the [[Languages]] of [[Middle-earth]] as expounded in the ''[[Lhammas]]'', '''Oromëan''' is the language phylum to which all [[Elvish]] languages, such as [[Quenya]] and [[Sindarin]], belong. It is there contrasted with [[Aulëan]], the language phylum of [[Khuzdul]], the language of the [[Dwarves]].

The Oromëan languages are so named because their ancestral language supposedly derives from the speech of [[Oromë]], the [[Valar|Vala]] of the Forest, who was the first of the Valar to meet the [[Elves]] at [[Cuiviénen]] in [[Middle-earth]].

This concept was later dropped and it is mentioned that when Oromë found the Elves they already had devised by themselves [[Primitive Elvish]].

'''Valinorean Quenya''' was a dialect of [[Quenya]] spoken by the [[Elves]] who stayed in [[Valinor]]. It has some differences with [[Quenya|Exilic, or Noldorin Quenya]], but they seem to be only phonetical.

'''Moon-letters''' were a system of writing invented by [[Dwarves]]. Moon-letters were ordinary [[Runes]], but written in such a way that they could only be read when the light of the moon shone behind the writing. Some moon-letters could be read by any moonlight, but it was possible to make the writing even more secret. More sophisticated moon-letters could only be read by the same shape of moon, or at the same time of year, as when they were written.

Moon-letters were written with silver pens. The substance [[Ithildin]], made from [[Mithril]], reflected only starlight and moonlight, and it seems likely that ithildin, or something very similar, was used by the Dwarves to write their moon-letters.

An example of these moon-letters would be on the [[Thrór's map]] of the [[Lonely Mountain]] and surrounding areas that [[Gandalf]] gave [[Thorin Oakenshield]] . The moon letters were the more cunning type mentioned above, and they were written on a midsummers eve in a crescent moon. They said:
