Notes
Reflist

Structure
The cirth table above demonstrates the values after Daeron rearranged them into what became known as the Certhas Daeron. The cirth runes themselves existed beforehand, with different but unglossed values.

The known ancient cirth don’t cover all the sounds of Sindarin, since we are missing rh, lh, mh, v, y, œ. Perhaps they were used for the Old Sindarin tongue, and many of the above mentioned sounds indeed didn’t exist in that language. However still frequent sounds w and a are missing. This indicates that some ancient, unknown cirth could have existed, but didn’t make it to the later systems; a fuller table therefore can't be reconstructed.

As for the vowel usage, perhaps the certh for u possibly was used for w (like in early latin orthography). The certh for a can’t be guessed, so maybe this sound was “meant” (like in some Quenya Tengwar Modes). More possibly it was one of the two cirth whose value can’t be determined, or it was one of some other cirth that did not survive till the later Angerthas.

Long vowels were evidently indicated by doubling (cf. the known certh for long o, <em style="font-family: 'Cirth Erebor'; font-style: normal;">n</em>, is a simplified form of <em style="font-family: 'Cirth Erebor'; font-style: normal;">bb</em>).

History
During the Chaining of Melkor, the Sindar of Beleriand began developing an alphabet for their language. Its letters were entirely made for carving on wood, stone or metal, hence their angular forms and straight lines. These letters were named cirth (sing. certh).

The assignment of values was unsystematic. The form of a certh was consisted of a stem and a branch. The branch was found usually on the right side of the stem, and sometimes on the left, but with no phonetic significance. Therefore <em style="font-family: 'Cirth Erebor'; font-style: normal;">3</em> would just be an alternative form of <em style="font-family: 'Cirth Erebor'; font-style: normal;">1</em>.

Certhas Daeron was created in the Year of the Trees 1300 of the First Age by Daeron, the minstrel of king Thingol of Doriath, and was later expanded into what was known as the Angerthas Daeron.

By the Second Age the cirth were seldomly used. The Noldor of Eregion used cirth as a "matter of lore" mainly for formal writing. It was how the Dwarves of Moria got to know them and preferred them from the tengwar, being intended for carved inscriptions. They modifed the system accordngly for their Khuzdul language (cf. Angerthas Moria and Angerthas Erebor).

By the Third Age only some Elves of Sindarin descent wrote in cirth in inscriptions, even though with spelling influence from the tengwar. The Longbeards were of the very few peoples who still knew and used cirth, leading to the misconception that they invented them, and were known as "dwarf-letters" by outsiders.

Inspiration
Many letters have shapes also found in the historical Futhark, but their sound values are only similar in a few of the vowels. Rather, the system of assignment of sound values is much more systematic in the Cirth than in the historical runes (e.g., voiced variants of a voiceless sound are expressed by an additional stroke). A similar system has been proposed for a few historical runes (e.g. p ᛈ and w ᚹ as variants of b ᛒ), but is in any case much more obscure.
Other versions of the legendarium
Tolkien had noted an apparent discrepancy between Elrond's reference to the Runes (the Moon-letters) as invented by the Dwarves, and Appendix E stating that they were invented by the Sindar in Beleriand. He attempted to resolve the discrepancy by having the Dwarves invent the Runes, and Daeron organising them; or making Angerthas Moria a purely Dwarvish invention. However, he decided that Elrond referred only to the Moon-letters and not the alphabetic system itself. Christopher Tolkien cites this incident as an example of how he strived for consistency for his Secondary world.

Encoding
The Cirth are not part of the Unicode Standard. However the ConScript Unicode Registry has defined the U+E080&ndash;E0FF range of the Unicode "Private Use Area" for Cirth.
Its original value can&rsquo;t be guessed (maybe the certh for a?), but judging from the &ldquo;labial&rdquo; shape, it could be w.</ref>
Notes
Reflist

Melian the Maia was the wife of Elu Thingol, mother of Lúthien Tinúviel, and Queen of Doriath.

Attributes
Melian served Vána and Estë. She was said to be akin to Yavanna the Valië. She is associated with songbirds, and it is said she taught nightingales how to sing and their music followed her paces. In Valinor, she dwelt in the Gardens of Lórien tending its trees, and she was the most beautiful, wise and skilled in songs of enchantment of all the people of Irmo. However, she journeyed often to Middle-earth for she loved the deep shadows of trees and forests.

History
In the dawn of Arda Melian dwelt in the Gardens of Lórien, and taught the nightingales how to sing. When the lights of the Two Trees mingled, at noon, she sang in Lórien, and it is said that everything stopped, even the bells and fountains of Valmar, to enjoy her voice.

Around the time of the Awakening of the Elves, her love for the trees brought her to Middle-earth, filling its silence with her and her birds' voices. After Oromë found the Elves in Cuiviénen, the Valar planned to make War against Melkor and during their preparations, they sent Melian to Cuiviénen, and then a group of great Maiar to guard the Elves. Melian was their leader, the only female spirit among them.

When the Eldar marched into the West, in the woods of Nan Elmoth, Melian came upon Elwë Singollo of the people of the Teleri. Elwë was entranced and fell into a swoon at the sight of the Maia Melian, and the two of them stood hand in hand, unable to move or speak for years while the trees grew around them. As a result of his absence, a portion of his followers stayed behind to search for him, while the rest continued on to Valinor under the kingship of Olwë, brother of Elwë.

Melian and Thingol recovered and gathered the Elves who stayed behind to look for Elwë, who were named Eglath. They founded the kingdom of Eglador and ruled as King and Queen of all the Elves in Beleriand. Melian was the only known Ainu who coupled with one of the Children of Ilúvatar, and thus she begot a child, the daughter named Lúthien, who was the fairest of the Children to have ever lived. She married the Man Beren Erchamion, and as a result, Melian's blood of the Maiar was passed on to both Elves and Men.

Foreseeing that war was coming to Beleriand, Melian warned her husband Thingol. In turn, Thingol ordered the delving of a strong fortress in their kingdom. This was Menegroth, the Thousand Caves, and they were aided by the Dwarves. With the return of Morgoth and the flight of Ungoliant from his Balrogs, the dark spider tried to enter into Thingol's domain, but Melian alone repelled Ungoliant and drove her away.

When war with the Great Enemy, Morgoth, came at last to their land, she used her powers to guard and defend it with a protection called List Melian, or "the Girdle of Melian", and their kingdom was known as Doriath, the Land of the Fence. This prevented anyone less powerful than Melian from entering the kingdom. However, with the foresight of a Maia, she predicted that one day someone more powerful would be able to enter. When Beren arrived as foretold, she counselled King Thingol against sending Beren to search for a Silmaril, which would eventually lead to Doriath's ruin. This was one of many instances in which she proved, through her wisdom and powers of foresight, to be wiser than her husband, and an effective queen of her land. The great evil wolf Carcharoth also passed the Girdle, as fate and the power of the Silmaril let him.

In Doriath, she also became a friend and tutor of Galadriel to whom she taught great lore and wisdom concerning Middle-earth and also the art of lembas-baking which she knew from her mistress, Yavanna. She eventually questioned Galadriel on how and why the Noldor had returned, upon which Galadriel told her only some of the story. Therefore she was the first to glean the truth, perceiving more than Galadriel was willing to tell, and she warned Thingol against dealing with the Sons of Fëanor. After the departure of Lúthien and Beren, she aided Túrin and his mother and sister. She provided Beleg with some way-bread, lembas, for him and the exiled Túrin, showing great favour because never before was lembas given to a Man and seldom was it again. But she also foresaw his doom in his quest for Túrin. When Húrin, father of Túrin, returned from his captivity in Angband, she was the one to lift the dark spell of Morgoth from him.

Thingol's arrogance eventually resulted to his death in the Battle of the Thousand Caves. Melian then departed from the mortal lands, vanishing to Valinor, where she mourned the loss of her husband in the Halls of Mandos and her daughter to the unknown fate of the Gift of Men. In her absence, Doriath was opened to its enemies, which led to its ultimate demise.
Other versions of the legendarium
She appeared in The Book of Lost Tales as Tindriel or Wendelin (Qenya) and in a Gnomish dictionary as Gwendeling or Gwendhiling. In a crossed out note, she had with Tinwelint a son, Tinfang, and a daughter, Tinúviel.

In the early legendarium Melian is defined as a fay, making her somewhat more sinister than in her later appearance. This version of her is presented in The Tale of Tinúviel, Tolkien's first story of Beren and Lúthien, which was written in archaic English and published in The Book of Lost Tales Part Two. In this work she appears in another later narrative, although her character is portrayed as being far weaker and more frail than Melian's final manifestation. She also appeared under several names, such as Gwenniel.

Vëannë and Ausir argued whether she should be called Wendelin or Gwendeling. In a slightly later version, the name Melian appeared. In one variant she was a daughter of Lórien. She was found by Tinwelint while listening to the song of nightingales and ran away with laughter when he tried to touch her hair. Then he fell into a deep slumber, and she kept watch over him while he slept. Later she became his wife and the queen of Artanor.

Christopher Tolkien noticed that in this early version her protection was weaker and there was the possibility that enemies would follow the returning Beren and Tinúviel.

A text apparently written in 1959 or later suggests that Melian, having been 'warned in dream' of the Awakening of the Elves, travelled to Cuiviénen, either independently or sent by the Valar at the head of five other Maiar (who would later become the five Istari).
Morwen was a daughter of Baragund of the House of Bëor, the wife of Húrin of the House of Hador, and the mother of Túrin Turambar, Urwen, and Nienor. She was described as being the most beautiful mortal woman of her time - tall, dark-haired, bright-eyed, and extremely majestic. She also had a stern and cold disposition. Her son Túrin, but not her daughters, inherited her beauty and her tendency to keep her emotions and thoughts to herself.

History
Morwen was the daughter of Baragund, Lord of Ladros, and so belonged to the House of Beor. In the immediate aftermath of the Dagor Bragollach, Morwen, together with her first cousin Rían, fled Ladros with the help of their kinswoman Emeldir, first to Brethil and eventually to Dor-lómin. There, she eventually married Húrin of the House of Hador and Lord of Dor-lómin. They had three children together, Túrin, Urwen, and Nienor. Urwen perished to the Evil Breath, a plague of Morgoth, when she was a young child.

After Húrin's departure to fight for Fingon at the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, Morwen, who was pregnant with their third child, remained in her husband's house as the Lady of Dor-Lómin. After Morgoth's victory at the Nirnaeth, hordes of Easterlings who had betrayed the Edain, invaded Hithlum. Even though they took control of the land, they left Morwen and her household alone for a while, as her incredible beauty led them to believe her to be a witch with dealings with the Elves. She was indeed in contact with small groups of Elves living in the mountains close to her house, but from them she received only information, and that very scant.

Eventually she thought it best to send her only surviving child, Túrin, to Doriath with Gethron and Grithnir to seek refuge. Being pregnant, and out of fear of drawing the Easterlings' attention, Morwen herself remained in Dor-Lómin.

Túrin was adopted by King Thingol, who sent messengers back to Hithlum bringing her news about Túrin's well-being, invitations from Thingol and gifts from Melian. But she refused to leave her home, not the least because her daughter Nienor was still a baby. In her stead she sent to Túrin the dragon-crested Helm of Hador, the heirloom of their house.

Morwen's house was oppressed by Brodda's Easterlings, although she received the help of Aerin, a kinswoman of Húrin whom Brodda had taken to wife against her will, and who knew Morwen's counsel. Meanwhile, Túrin had exiled himself out of Doriath and made himself a hero. The fame of the Black Sword reached to Hithlum, saying that he was cleansing Beleriand from perils, without Morwen knowing that he was her own son. Nienor now had grown up, and Morwen eventually fled the tyranny of Hithlum through Ered Wethrin and came to Doriath, only to find out that her son had left. Túrin's travels also brought him to the north and liberated Dor-Lómin, but it was too late, as Morwen and Nienor had long gone.

Elves of Nargothrond came to Doriath, bringing news about its sack by Glaurung and that Túrin was under Orodreth's service in Nargothrond; hearing this, against Melian's counsel Morwen left Doriath to seek news of him. Mablung and march-wardens were tasked to accompany her; unknown to both, Nienor had joined them. Mablung reached her near Sirion but Morwen refused to hear him; then Nienor revealed herself and both women tried to persuade each other to return.

As Morwen refused to go back, and Nienor wouldn't abandon her mother, Mablung perforce passed them over the Meres of Twilight and left the women with guards upon Amon Ethir before setting out with a small company to scout Nargothrond as were his orders by Thingol. Yet Glaurung left Nargothrond and Mablung was unable to prevent them both from getting ensnared in the traps of the Dragon.

Morwen was then lost in the fog that arose from the Dragon's steamy breath and Mablung heard no news from her.

Years later, Morwen, now in her fifties, came to the Forest of Brethil and found the graves of her children at Cabed Naeramarth. Húrin found her there. She was dying, and asked her husband how their son found his sister; but Húrin never replied. They spent the evening together until she passed away at sunset. Húrin dug for her a grave above Cabed Naeramarth on the west side of the Stone of the Hapless cutting the words Here lies also Morwen Eledhwen.

According to the words of Glirhuin, the mound survived the War of Wrath and as Tol Morwen was the westernmost isle off the coast of Lindon in the Second and Third Ages.

Etymology

Etymology
Morwen is Sindarin for "Dark Maiden", from môr ("darkness, dark, night") + gwenn ("maiden").

History
Morwen was the daughter of Baragund, Lord of Ladros. She belonged to the House of Beor and married Húrin of the House of Hador and Lord of Dor-lómin.

Etymology
Morwen is Sindarin for "Dark Maiden", from môr ("darkness, dark, night") + gwenn ("maiden").

History
Morwen was the daughter of Baragund, Lord of Ladros. She belonged to the House of Beor and married Húrin of the House of Hador and Lord of Dor-lómin.
