Eldacar of Gondor
Eldacar (Third Age 1255 – 1490, aged 235 years) was the twenty-first King of Gondor and the son of Valacar and Vidumavi and born with the name Vinitharya.

His reign saw the already lingering unrest explode, for he was the son of princess Vidumavi, a daughter of the Northmen King Vidugavia, a lesser Man.

After ascending the throne in Third Age 1432 he reigned for five years when he was deposed and driven from Osgiliath into exile to Rhovanion by his far relative Castamir "The Usurper" in a civil war called the Kin-strife.

While being in exile he slowly gathered support from the Northmen and the Dúnedain from the northern parts of Gondor (who hated Castamir for executing Ornendil, Eldacar's firstborn son).

In 1447 he marched south with his army and slew Castamir personally at the Battle of Erui. But Castamir's sons escaped and Gondor's purest blood was spilt. He besieged Pelargir where Castamir's sons held out the last resistance. Eldacar had no ships at his disposal (for Castamir was the Lord of Ships of Gondor) and Castamir's sons finally fled to the Haven of Umbar.

Eldacar reigned until 1490 and was succeeded by his second son Aldamir.
Elanor Fairbairn (née Gamgee or Gardner) was the first child of Master Samwise Gamgee and his wife Rose Cotton.

Life
Called "The Fair" for her golden hair, she was born March 25th, 1421 by Shire Reckoning (which would be Third Age 3021), which was at the same time the first day of the Fourth Age in Gondor. Elanor was also the only one of Samwise's children known to the Ringbearer, Frodo Baggins, and her name was a suggestion by him, a reference to the sun-star, a little golden flower blooming in the land of Lothlórien — this perfectly satisfied Sam's desire for a name that was both Elvish and yet at the same time a simple flower-name as many hobbit-lasses had.

In 1436 Elanor became a maid of honor to Queen Arwen Evenstar, and in 1451 she married Fastred of Greenholm. Four years later Fastred was named Warden of Westmarch by the Thain at the request of Samwise. Elanor and her husband then moved to the Undertowers on the Tower Hills where their family (becoming known as the Fairbairns of the Towers) would live for many generations.

After her father's passing to the Undying Lands in 1482, Elanor and her line became the keepers of the Red Book of Westmarch. Her two children were Elfstan, born in 1454, and Fíriel.

Other versions of the Legendarium
Besides her presence as an infant in the last chapter of the published The Lord of the Rings, and the details noted in the appendices of that book, Elanor's most significant role was in the two versions of the written but unpublished epilogue of Lord of the Rings, later published in The History of Middle-earth volumes. In that epilogue we see Elanor talk with her father about the importance of the events that transpired in the story and also about the coming of King Elessar and Queen Arwen for a visit. Elanor's affectionate name for her father is "Sam-dad", while Sam calls her "Elanorellë".

Portrayal in Adaptations
:Elanor can be heard crying as Frodo (Ian Holm) tells Sam (Bill Nighy) that he must go on with his life. The crying is actually by Holm's son, Harry.

2003: Peter Jackson's The Return of the King
The city of Edoras was built on a hill in a valley of the White Mountains by Rohan's second King, Brego son of Eorl the Young. Before this, Rohan's capital was at Aldburg in the Folde.
Edoras was built at the end of the valley of Harrowdale, which lay under the great mountain Starkhorn.
Edhellond was an ancient harbor in southern Gondor.

Edhellond had been founded by the Nandor Elves before the end of the First Age, as a place where they built ships to leave for Valinor.

Amroth, Prince of Lórien, was lost at or near Edhellond in the year 1981 of the Third Age while looking for his beloved Nimrodel. One of her handmaidens, Mithrellas, was taken by Imrazôr the Númenórean as his wife, and their son Galador was to become the founder of the Princes of Dol Amroth line.

The Edain were those Men who made their way into Beleriand during the Siege of Angband during the First Age and were close allies of the Elves. The term Edain does not refer to another group of men who entered Beleriand later in the First Age known as the Easterlings who were noted as being swarthier than the Edain and a large portion of whom would later betray the elves.

Etymology
edain is the plural of adan, "man" in Sindarin.

The Sindarin word Edain, singular Adan (Quenya Atani, Atan) literally meant Second People, and originally referred to all Men, but later it only applied to the Men of Beleriand and their descendants. The Quenya term Atani kept its old meaning.

The Three Houses
They were divided in three large houses, or tribes:

# The House of Bëor: they were dark-haired and stoutly built, and most resembled the Ñoldor of all Elves. They were first discovered by Finrod Felagund, Lord of Nargothrond, and under his guidance later made their way to the lands of the Ñoldorin lord Amrod, in a place later known as Estolad, the Encampment. They remained loyal to the House of Finarfin, and later settled in the lands of Dorthonion.
# The Second House, later known as the Haladin or the House of Haleth. They were a reclusive folk, dark-haired but smaller in stature than the Bëorians. They kept separate from the other Men, and later received permission to settle in the Forest of Region, part of Doriath. They mostly kept out of the wars.
# The House of Marach, later best known as the House of Hador. They were tall and golden-haired, and most resembled the Vanyar of all Elves. They were a very numerous and war-like tribe, and the Green-elves of Ossiriand feared them. They later settled in Hithlum by way of Estolad. They were loyal to Fingolfin.

The Bëorians and Marachians shared a common tongue, and were known to each other before settling in Beleriand. The tongue of the Haladin was alien to them.

The House of Bëor was nearly wiped out by Morgoth, and the remainder of its people merged with the Hadorians to become the Númenóreans. It would seem that the Haladin of Beleriand were completely wiped out, or at least disappeared as a separate people.

Later History
After the War of Wrath the Edain were honoured and granted the island of Númenor by the Valar as a gift for their loyalty to the elves. Thus the Edain's decendants became a race far greater than all other men in Middle Earth, living within sight of the blessed realm.

When the Númenoreans returned to Middle-earth in the Second Age, they encountered many Men who were obviously related to the Atani: they classified these Men as Middle Men, and established friendly relations with them. Examples are the Rohirrim, the Men of Dale, and the Breelanders.

Other Men, such as the Dunlendings, were not recognised as Middle Men because they were related to the Haladin rather than Bëorians or Marachians, and they were hostile to Númenor.

A fourth kind of Men came with the Second House, and called themselves Drûg. This name was adopted in Sindarin as Drúedain: Drûg Edain. They were a strange people, living with the Haladin in the forest of Brethil, some even apparently made it to Númenor, but they died out or had left before the Akallabêth. In the Third Age, their far kin were known as the Woses of Drúadan Forest.
<br>
Ecthelion was an Elf-lord of Gondolin, leader of the People of the Fountain and slayer of Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs. He was also at one point Warden of the Great Gate of Gondolin. Ecthelion had the most beautiful voice and greatest musical talent with the flute of all the people of Gondolin. He led a wing of Gondolin's forces during the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, "The Battle of Unnumbered Tears".

History and creation
Perhaps the earliest J.R.R. Tolkien writing, The Fall of Gondolin was written during a leave of absence from the World War I, in the year 1916. It is in that story, published posthumously by Christopher Tolkien in the volume The Book of Lost Tales Part 2 that Ecthelion first appears. Thus he is one of the first characters Tolkien ever created.

However, from a chronological point of view, the first account of his presence is the chapter Of Maeglin from The Silmarillion. The events described here took place more than one hundred and fifty years before those of Gondolin's fall. Along with Glorfindel and Egalmoth, he was assigned by Turgon as Aredhel's escort on her ill-fated journey. Though no name is mentioned, only that "Turgon appointed three lords of his household", an explanatory note in the volume The War of the Jewels, chapter called Maeglin, sheds light on the escorts' identities.

Aredhel's Escort
Two hundred years after Gondolin was wrought, Ecthelion, Glorfindel and Egalmoth, along with the White Lady of the Ñoldor left the Hidden City due to Aredhel's yearning for the freedom she once had in Valinor. Their orders were to lead her towards Hithlum, where she would meet her elder brother Fingon. When coming upon the Ford of Brithiach, Aredhel ordered them to turn South, for she desired to see the Sons of Fëanor. Thus Ecthelion and his companions sought admittance to Doriath, but the wardens refused them entrance inside the Girdle of Melian. Having no other choice, they took the dangerous road between the haunted valleys of Ered Gorgoroth. Near Nan Dungortheb, the Valley of Dreadful Death, the riders were caught in a mesh of shadows and they were lost from Aredhel. In vain they sought her afterwards, but the fell offsprings of Ungoliant that dwelt in that place pursued them. Barely escaping alive, the three lords returned to Gondolin without the princess, where they were received in sorrow.

Lord of Gondolin
In the year F.A. 472 Ecthelion fought alongside Turgon in the battle Nirnaeth Arnoediad, leading a wing of Gondolin's forces. Upon the defeat of the Ñoldor, he defended a flank as Turgon retreated. Surviving the disastrous battle, Ecthelion returned towards the Hidden City where he next appeared as Warden of the Great Gate in the unfinished tale Of Tuor and his Coming to Gondolin.

Twenty-three years after Nirnaeth Arnoediad, Tuor and Voronwë traveled towards the Hidden City. After being led by Elemmakil through the Seven Gates, Ecthelion appeared before them. In a short description he is portrayed as great and lordly, all clad in silver and having a bright glance. Upon his helm there was a spike with a diamond point which shimmered as "a thousand studs of crystal". At first denying passage for Tuor, he allows it after the later makes a reference towards Ulmo, by saying that the Lord of the Fountains will not oppose the Lord of the Waters.

The House of the Fountain was one of the Twelve Houses of the Gondolindrim whose leader was Ecthelion. Its people found delight in diamonds and the silver of their arrays was most beautiful to the sight. In the Fall of Gondolin, Ecthelion led them into battle accompanied by the music of their flutes and great were the damages caused to the enemy by their long, bright swords.

Warcry to the Eldar
In the battle over Gondolin, Ecthelion and his forces made their entrance from the South part of the city, after previously being held in reserve. So terrible was his voice when commanding the drawing of the swords and the killings which followed, that his name became a terror among the enemy and a Warcry to the Eldar. Valiantly fighting side by side with Tuor and his House of the Wing, they drove away the orcs until almost the Gate was regained. As Dragons reinforced Morgoth's army, Ecthelion killed three Balrogs and his sword did "hurt to their fire". Outnumbered, they had to retreat. When doing so, Ecthelion's left arm was wounded and his shield fell to earth. Tuor carried him away as they joyned the remaining leaders in the Square of the King.

In that place the great Fountain of the King stood and Ecthelion regained his strength by drinking from it. As seven dragons lead the enemy's forces towards the Square, the remaining army of Gondolin began retreat. All but Ecthelion, who remained near the fountain in a stand which was remembered as the most valiant "in all the songs or in any tale". It was there that he faced Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs.

Slayer of Gothmog
Tuor tried to stand in the way of Gothmog, but he was thrown aside. Then Ecthelion, fairest of the Noldor, but whose face now had the pallor of grey steel, dueled him. Losing his sword due to a wound received he was unable to protect himself. Just as Gothmog was about to deliver the finishing blow, Ecthelion jumped and wrapped his legs around the demon, driving the spike of his helmet into Gothmog's body. This caused Gothmog to lose his balance, and he, along with Ecthelion, fell into the Fountain of the King. Gothmog's fire was thus quenched, but Ecthelion also drowned with him and found his death in cool waters, whose Lord he was.

Later, a young Eärendil asked about him, saying that he wished Ecthelion were there, "to play to me on his flute, or make me willow whistles! Perchance has he gone on ahead?" After he was informed of Ecthelion's death he "wept bitterly" and said that he cared no more to see the streets of Gondolin.

Etymology
There are three different sources that offer a translation of Ecthelion and they all differ substantially. In The Book of Lost Tales Part 2, Appendix, it is said that the name derives from the Quenya ehtelë, "issue of water, spring", a reference to his title as Lord for the House of the Fountain. In the Etymologies, volume The Lost Road and Other Writings, his name is composed from ehtë, "spear" and thela, "point" (of spear). Put together they would translate as "Spear-point" or "Spear-head". In The War of the Jewels, which seems to be the last matter J.R.R. Tolkien wrote on it, it is derived from aeg, "sharp", and thel, "intent, resolve". This would translate "one of sharp resolve".

The Echoriath formed a natural circle of rock, enclosing the valley later called Tumladen, within which lay the Elven city of Gondolin. A hidden ravine provided the only access through the Echoriath &mdash; a way guarded by seven gates.
Echoriath is Sindarin. It means "encercling fence", from echor "encircling" and iâth "fence".
In the published The Silmarillion, Orodreth is the son of Finarfin and Eärwen. This was an editorial decision by Christopher Tolkien, and an admitted mistake. Orodreth is actually Eärwen's grandson, the son of her child Angrod.
# In The Silmarillion, the family-tree of Elwë shows the Eärwen was the only child of Olwë. However, in the text she is said to have brothers, whose names are unknown.
Eärnur (Third Age 1928 – 2050) was the thirty-third and last King of Gondor. He took the throne upon the death of his father Eärnil II in T.A. 2043, and after his disappearance, the Stewards of Gondor ruled in his name for many generations.

Life
Eärnur was considered one of the greatest warriors and generals in the history Gondor. His greatest victory was in T.A. 1975, when he drove the Witch-king of Angmar out of Angmar in the Battle of Fornost. After being crowned King in 2043 he was challenged twice by the Witch-king of Angmar, chief of the Ringwraiths, who now resided in Minas Morgul. The first challenge went unanswered but in 2050 the second came and he accepted. After entering the gates of Minas Morgul, he was never heard from again.

No new king was elected and the rule of Gondor passed to the Stewards, beginning with Mardil Voronwë, who had tried to restrain Eärnur from going to Minas Morgul. The Stewards were to rule "until the King returns", because it was uncertain at first whether Eärnur had been killed or not. In addition, Eärnur left without an heir, and while many others in Gondor could lay some sort of claim to the kingship, those claims generally had some sort of doubt, and no one wanted to risk another civil war like the Kin-strife, which had been devastating for Gondor.

Etymology
Eärnur means "Servant of the Sea" in Quenya, from ëar "sea" and -ndur "servant".
Eärnil II (Third Age 1928 – 2043, aged 115 years) was elected as the thirty-second King of Gondor after his predecessor, King Ondoher, was slain in battle. In the previous year a two-pronged attack had been launched upon Gondor by the Haradrim and the Wainriders. In response, King Ondoher led the main army north to counter the Easterling invasion at Dagorlad and was defeated. Eärnil was commander of Gondor's southern army and guarded Pelargir. Eärnil led his army to the Crossings of the Poros were he won a astounding victory over the Haradrim. This enabled him to turn his attention to the invading Wainriders. The Wainriders, certain of victory, were celebrating their success before they would enter Minas Anor. They were unaware of Eärnil's victory in the south and were taken by surprise when Eärnil suddenly attacked them. As a result Eärnil won the Battle of the Camp.

After the threat was eliminated Gondor's attention shifted towards Steward Pelendur and the Council of Gondor, for King Ondoher along with his two sons were slain at Dagorlad. Both he and prince Arvedui of Arthedain (sucessor state of Arnor) claimed the throne. Arvedui based his claim on that he was the direct descendant of Isildur (second High King of Arnor and Gondor and uncle to Meneldil first King of Gondor), and as the husband of Fíriel, only surviving child of King Ondoher. but Eärnil was elected king for his deeds, heritage, and because the Steward, Pelendur, claimed that "The crown and royalty of Gondor belongs solely to the heirs of Meneldil, son of Anárion, to whom Isildur relinquished this realm. In Gondor this heritage is reckoned through the sons only; and we have not heard that the law is otherwise in Arnor." He reigned as Eärnil II.

Aside from being a gifted general Eärnil also was a wise ruler. He sent messages to Arvedui announcing that he received the crown of Gondor, according to the laws and theneeds of the South-kingdom, "but I do not forget the royalty of Arnor, nor deny our kinship, nor wish that the realms of Elendil be estranged. I will send to your aid when you have need, so far as I am able." And at last in the autumn of 1973, messages came to Gondor that Arthedain was in great trouble, and that the Witch-king of Angmar was preparing a final stroke against it. Then Eärnil sent his son Eärnur north with a fleet, as swiftly as he coud, and with as great a strength as he could spare to aid Arvedui (now king). Eärnur arrived too late to save Arthedain and Arvedui who had fled north (and was drowned in the Icebay of Forochel) but manage to defeated the witch-kingdom of Angmar in the Battle of Fornostwith the help of Círdan Lord of Lindon and Glorfindel with an army from Rivendell. There Eärnur earned the hatred of the Witch-king.

However, Eärnil was not able to withstand the takeover of Minas Ithil by the Ringwraiths. Minas Anor was renamed Minas Tirith ("Tower of the Guard") and Minas Ithil was called Minas Morgul ("Tower of Sorcery").

Eärnil died in 2043 Third Age and was succeeded by his son Eärnur, who was as good a general as his father but lacked his wisdom.
Eärendur's rule was uneventful (as far as we know), but he was the tenth and last King of Arnor due to dissention amongst his sons.

After his death in 861, probably due to jealousy on the part of the two younger sons, his three sons split Arnor into three separate kingdoms: Arthedain, Cardolan and Rhudaur.

His eldest son and rightful heir, Amlaith of Fornost, became the first King of Arthedain, and it was through Amlaith and his heirs that the line of Isildur endured whilst the line of kings of Arthedain and Cardolan failed - Aragorn II was a direct descendent of Amlaith, and it wasn't until Aragorn became king that Arnor was finally reunified.

The only recorded historical event to take place during Eärendil's reign was the birth of Elrond's daughter Arwen, three years after he took the throne. No one in Gondor at that could have known how significant that event would be: nearly three thousand years later, Arwen was to wed Aragorn II, a distant descendant of Eärendil's ancestor Elendil, and become Queen of his realm.

Eärendil rule was peaceful and he was succeeded by his son Anardil.
Eärendil (Third Age 48 – 324, aged 276 years) was the fifth King of Gondor, ruling for 86 years, from Third Age 238 until his death.

Eärendil the Mariner was one of the most important figures in the mythology of Middle-earth. His story is found in The Silmarillion and there are several references to him throughout The Lord of the Rings.

History
The son of Tuor and Idril, daughter of King Turgon, Eärendil was raised as a child in Gondolin. When Eärendil was seven years old, he escaped the Fall of Gondolin on the shoulders of Idril's house-carle Hendor, living afterwards in Arvernien by the Havens of Sirion. Eärendil later became the leader of the people who lived there, and married Elwing, daughter of Dior the son of Beren and Lúthien. They had two sons, Elrond and Elros.

With the aid of Círdan the Shipwright, Eärendil built a ship, Vingilótë (or Vingilot), and sailed around the seas west of Middle-earth, leaving his wife behind in Arvernien. At this time Elwing had in her possession the Silmaril that Beren had wrested from Morgoth. News of this came to the sons of Fëanor that were still living, and they attacked the people living in Arvernien, and slew most of them. But Elwing, rather than be captured, threw herself with the Silmaril into the sea. The Silmaril was not lost, however:

Hearing of the tragedy that had befallen in Arvernien, Eärendil then sought after Valinor, and he and Elwing found their way there at last. Eärendil thus became the first of all mortals to set foot in Valinor. Eärendil then went before the Valar, and asked them for aid for Men and Elves in Middle-earth, to fight against Morgoth; and the Valar accepted his plea.

The Valar, having listened to Eärendil's plea, went with a mighty host to Middle-earth, and overthrew Morgoth, and bound him. Eärendil took part in the battle, riding on Vingilot beside Thorondor and the Eagles. It was his blow that slew the great dragon Ancalagon and cast it down onto Thangorodrim, the event which, along with the sheer devastation caused by the War of Wrath, led to the Ruin of Beleriand.

Etymology
Eärendil is a Quenya name, meaning "Devoted to the Sea". However, Tolkien created the name based on Old English literature. Tolkien's himself states (Letters, 297) that the name is derived from the Anglo-Saxon éarendel. He says that he was struck by the "great beauty" of the name as early as 1913, which he perceived as "entirely coherent with the normal style of A-S, but euphonic to a peculiar degree in that pleasing but not 'delectable' language."

Inspiration
There is a poem by Tolkien dated to 1914 entitled The Voyage of Eärendel the Evening Star (published in HoME 2 267–269). Tolkien was also aware of the name's Germanic cognates (Old Norse Aurvandill, Lombardic Auriwandalo), and the question why the Anglo-Saxon one rather than the Lombardic or Proto-Germanic form should be taken up in the mythology is alluded to in The Notion Club Papers. The Old Norse together with the Anglo-Saxon evidence point to an astronomical myth, the name referring to a star, or a group of stars, and the Anglo-Saxon in particular points to the Morning Star as the herald of the rising Sun (in Crist christianized to refer to John the Baptist).

Tolkien was particularly inspired by the lines in Crist:

<blockquote>éala éarendel engla beorhtast / ofer middangeard monnum sended<br>
"Hail Earendel, brightest of angels / sent over Middle-earth to men."</blockquote>

which can be taken as the inspiration not only for the role of Eärendil in Tolkien's work, but also for the term Middle-earth (translating Middangeard) for the inhabitable lands.

The first line is paralleled by Frodo's exclamation in Cirith Ungol, "Aiya Eärendil Elenion Ancalima!" which is in Quenya and translates as "Hail Eärendil, brightest of stars!" Frodo's exclamation was in reference to the "Star-glass" he carried, which contained the light of Eärendil's star, the Silmaril.
In the depths of the dark Dimholt wood, at the entrance to a glen, stood a single standing stone. Dwalin, son of Fundin and younger brother of Balin, is one of the least mentioned Dwarves in The Hobbit. He was the first Dwarf to arrive at Bag End. He wore a dark green hood and a golden belt and had a blue beard. Like his brother he plays the viol. Dwalin lent a hood and cloak to Bilbo when they set out on their journey.

Life
King Thráin's Expedition
Nothing is known about Dwalin's childhood. He is first mentioned accompanying King Thráin II with a few others including his brother Balin, on the king's attempt to reclaim Erebor; but the king wandered off one night at the eves of Mirkwood and his company looked everywhere for him but they did not know that he was captured by the servants of Sauron and taken to the dungeons of Dol Guldur. So the company headed back to the northern Ered Luin; where Thráin had previously established a new kingdom and was now ruled by his son Thorin Oakenshield.

Quest of Erebor
Decades after Thráin's disappearance, Thorin and his people were doing well in there new home, but ever they remembered Erebor, and their treasure. When the king -by the advise of the wizard Gandalf- decided to reclaim Erebor, he called together a small company of his kin and followers to join him. Dwalin was one of these. Along with Balin, Dwalin set off with twelve other Dwarves to the Lonely mountain of Erebor.

took part in the Battle of Dale during the War of the Ring.

Dwalin supposedly died in IV 91 at the age of 340, very old even for a Dwarf.
Almost nothing is known of his life, but an unpublished paper1 by Tolkien stated that he led Durin's folk back Khazad-dûm and restored the ancient kingdom during the Fourth Age. There his house remained "until the world grew old and the Dwarves failed and the days of Durin's race were ended." The actions of Durin VII were prophesized at the time of the Battle of Five Armies. It is not known if Tolkien meant this interpretation to stand.
Like all Durins after Durin I he was given the name of the first Father of the Dwarves because he greatly resembled him in both appearance and manner. During the end of his reign the Dwarves, while mining for mithril, awoke a Balrog that had hidden itself deep beneath the city. The monster began to wreck havoc on Khazad-dûm and slew Durin. Since the surviving Dwarves were unsure what type of monster they faced, the Balrog was simply called "Durin's Bane". Durin's son Náin I was slain shortly thereafter, leaving his grandson Thráin I to lead Durin's folk away from their ancestral home.

Durin III (late Second Age) was a King of Durin's folk who ruled the great Dwarven city of Khazad-dûm. During his reign the Dwarves of Khazad-dûm had struck a rare friendship with the Elves of Ost-in-Edhil in Eregion. Celebrimbor, the lord of Ost-in-Edhil, designed with Narvi the famous Doors of Durin. More importantly, Celebrimbor secretly gave Durin the first of the Seven Rings of Power. This ring would later be known as the Ring of Thrór.

Unbeknownst to Celebrimbor, his partner in crafting the Rings was actually Sauron. The Dark Lord had come in the guise of wise Annatar to corrupt the Elves through the Rings of Power. By Second Age 1697, Sauron had learned that he could not control either the Elves nor the Dwarves through the Rings and led a large army towards Eregion. There he slaughtered Celebrimbor and scattered the people of Ost-in-Edhil. In response Durin sealed the Doors of Durin from the outside world.

Like all Durins after Durin I he was given the name of the first Father of the Dwarves|Father of the Dwarves because he greatly resembled him in both appearance and manner.
Durin I (Years of the Trees – First Age), also known as Durin the Deathless, was the eldest of the seven Fathers of the Dwarves, the first of that race to be created by the Vala Aulë. He was set to sleep under the mountains of Middle-earth until after the Awakening of the Elves.

Durin awoke at Mount Gundabad in the Misty Mountains during the Years of the Trees. He journeyed South through the wild until he came upon Mirrormere (Kheled-zâram in Khuzdul). Looking upon mysterious stars set like a crown reflected in its surface, he took this as a sign, and there in the caves above the lake, founded a great city. This was Khazad-dûm, later called Moria, and for many years it was the greatest Dwarven city in Middle-earth.

Durin lived to a great age even by the measure of the Dwarves, outliving many of his children, until he was known as "The Deathless". However, he was not actually immortal, and died sometime during the First Age.
The age of Durin had been speculated, and it is believed he may have lived more than 1000-4000 years, from the mid part of the Years of the Trees, to before then end of the First Age. This would make him the oldest Dwarf ever recorded.

Durin was the founder of the Longbeard house, which became known as Durin's folk. These were the Dwarves chronicled by Tolkien in the Second and Third Ages. The Longbeards believed that Durin would return to them seven times, and in each reincarnation he will again be named Durin and reign as King. He did have six descendents that were named Durin, all were kings of Durin's folk.

Durin's axe survived him and would become a great heirloom of Durin's folk.
Etymology
Durinn is a dwarf from the Norse mythology and the name means 'Sleeper'.

However Tolkien explored the possibility that the name 'Durin' is not 'translated Mannish' as happens with other Dwarven names, but an actual word in his Legendarium, a genuine Mannish name meaning 'King'. Obviously the name would be related to the Elven root TUR meaning 'master'
In ancient times the peoples who were the ancestors of the Dunlendings ranged over much of what later became Eraidor and Gondor, but they were increasingly driven back by the Númenórean. Offshoots of these peoples survived in isolated places like the hilly country of Dunland or in the White Mountains: thus the Dead Men of Dunharrow are akin to the ancient Dunlendings. Some of these people were absorbed into the population of Gondor, and some stayed in the White Mountains. The Dunlendings themselves are a branch of the folk of the White Mountains that moved north to Dunland. Interestingly, the Bree-landers are themselves actually an offshoot of the Dunlendings, who moved even further north until they reached what became the Bree-land, and were absorbed into Arnor. There are few records of the Dunlending language, due to their lack of a written history and poor oral tradition.

The Dunlendings were always angered that the rich lands of Rohan were not granted to them, and constantly harassed the Rohirrim. The worst of these incidents was an all-out invasion by the Dunlending chief Wulf in Third Age 2758 which nearly overwhelmed Rohan during a particularly harsh winter, though the people of Rohan survived the crisis due to the leadership of King Helm the Hammerhand, and eventually the Dunlendings were driven out.

The Dunlendings were employed by the wizard Saruman to attack and raid the cities and settlements of Rohan. Since Gríma Wormtongue had corrupted the mind of King Theoden, the Rohirrim were absent for the most part, and the farm boys and old men who picked up rusty swords proved to be little contest to the ferocious Dunlendings.

Wild Men were also present at the Battle of the Hornburg (Battle of Helm's Deep), as well as an odd breed of Half-orcs, derived from Orcs and the Men of Dunland. They fought viciously against their old enemy, but when Gandalf stormed down the hill with a thousand Rohirrim at his back and his staff shining piercing light into the eyes of the Dunlendings, they dropped their weapons and surrendured. This proved to be a wise decision, as the Orcs who fled were killed by a massive forest of Huorns that blocked the entrance to the valley.

After Saruman's downfall, the Dunlendings retreated back into their homeland and did not trouble the people of Rohan. When the wizard Saruman attempted to take over the Shire, there were a number of Dunlendings with him. However, they were slain or driven away by Hobbits, Saruman died at the hands of his own servant, Wormtongue, Sauron, the basis of all evil, had fallen, and King Elessar took the throne of Gondor, the Dunlendings agreed never to trouble the free peoples of Middle-earth again, and their old and evil power was finally broken.

Behind the scenes
It is possible that the rivalry between the primitive Dunlendings and the blonde-haired, pseudo-Anglo-Saxon Rohirrim who migrated into the lands neighboring them was meant by Tolkien to be analagous to the real life conflicts that arose between the Anglo-Saxons in England and neighboring Celtic peoples.

Dunharrow was a refuge of the Rohirrim hidden in the White Mountains and fortified against attack. Dunharrow had been used as a refuge by the Middle Men of the White Mountains during the Second Age &mdash; nearly three mellennia before the establishment of the Kingdom of Rohan.

Dunharrow was a clifftop overlooking Harrowdale, the valley of the river Snowbourn. In order to reach the refuge, a winding path had to be used, known as the Stair of the Hold. This path was lined with statues known as the Púkel-men &mdash; statues originally carved by the Men of the White Mountains, in the likeness of the Drúedain. After the stair was the "Firienfeld", a large grassy area for the encampment of soldiers and refuge-seekers.

Large carved stones marked the entrance to the Dimholt, a natural amphitheater, which led into the Paths of the Dead.

The Dúnedain of Arnor were one of the two great divisions of the descendants of the Númenóreans in Middle-earth (the other being the Gondorians of the South-kingdom). The North-kingdom of Arnor had originally held the capital of High King Elendil at Annúminas, and the Dúnedain of that land were ruled for centuries by the descendants of Elendil's eldest son Isildur.

Before the end of the first millennium of the Third Age, the land of Arnor fell into dispute between the sons of King Eärendur, and the Dúnedain who lived there became divided into three realms: Arthedain, Cardolan and Rhudaur. One by one, these kingdoms fell, until at last the Dúnedain of Arnor had become a dwindled and wandering people. Nonetheless, their chieftains maintained the bloodline of Elendil's eldest son, and Aragorn II—among whose titles was Chieftain of the Dúnedain of Arnor—was his direct descendant through many generations.
The Dúnedain (singular: Dúnadan) were the the Men of Númenor and their descendants who peopled Arnor and Gondor in the Second and Third Ages. Some of them fled Númenor just before its destruction with Elendil and his sons, while others had settled around the haven of Pelargir before the Downfall. They are also called the Men of the West and the Men of Westernesse (direct translations of the Sindarin term).

After the fall of Arnor and then Arthedain, some of the northern Dúnedain became the Rangers of the North. The surviving Dúnedainic population of Arnor retreated to the Angle south of Rivendell. In the mean time the southern Dúnedain, the Men of Gondor, intermarried more and more with so-called Middle Men, except in some regions (such as Dol Amroth).

In the Fourth Age, the Dúnedain of Gondor and Arnor were reunited under king Aragorn II Elessar (who was also called the Dúnadan).

The Westron name for Dúnadan was simply Adûn, "westerner", but this name was seldom used.

This name was reserved to those Númenóreans who were friendly to the Elves: the other, hostile survivors of the Downfall were known as the Black Númenóreans.
