==History==
Meriadoc was a part of and apparently led the [[Conspirators]], a group of Frodo's friends (namely [[Samwise Gamgee]], [[Peregrin Took]], [[Fredegar Bolger]], and himself) who sought to protect him (and [[One Ring|the Ring]]). Eventually, they revealed themselves to him, and demanded to be taken along when Frodo left [[Crickhollow]]. Merry had already arranged for provisions and ponies, so they were able to start right away.

During the following trip to [[Bree]], Merry seemed to have a greater knowledge of the [[Old Forest]] than any of the other Hobbits, and with them encountered [[Old Man Willow]], a [[Barrow-wight]], and [[Tom Bombadil]].

Upon reaching [[Bree]], Merry had an encounter with the [[Black Riders]], and bravely followed them until he passed out from exposure to the [[Black Breath]]. During the trip through the wild with [[Aragorn]], then known as Strider, he often saw the most deeply into the others. After Frodo was wounded on [[Weathertop]], he became the one who consulted most with Strider, and in a way became the spokesman for the Hobbits.

After reaching [[Rivendell]], he, with Pippin, insisted on not being left behind on the [[Quest of the Ring]]. Therefore they were chosen as the eighth and ninth members of the [[Fellowship of the Ring]].

At the gate of [[Moria]], he was commended by [[Gandalf]] for being "''of all people''" on the right track with the riddle (though this was hardly his fault). His impetuosity in Moria was such that he nearly fell into an ancient well running ahead with Pippin.

Captured with Pippin by [[Uruk-hai]], they were separated from the rest of the Fellowship. Merry aided Pippin in an attempt to deceive [[Grishnákh]] into thinking they had the One Ring, and he could have it. During the attack by [[Éomer]] and his [[Rohirrim|Outriders]] they escaped into [[Fangorn Forest]], meeting [[Treebeard]]. They thus became the first mortals for many centuries to encounter the [[Ents]] of Fangorn Forest. They were present at the [[Entmoot]], and the resulting destruction of [[Isengard]].

While Pippin and Gandalf headed away to [[Minas Tirith]], Merry stayed with Aragorn and the Rohirrim, developing a close friendship with King [[Théoden]]. Merry was forbidden - firmly but gently - by the King to ride with them to the aid of Minas Tirith because he could not ride the mighty horses of the Rohirrim so fast and so far. In this manner he rode to the [[Battle of the Pelennor Fields]], having a secret understanding with [[Elfhelm]] and several others of the Rohirrim.

During the charge and the commencement of the battle he was almost useless, hiding behind Dernhelm and shaking with fright and nausea. However, Dernhelm's steed, [[Windfola]], threw them both upon the coming of the [[Witch-king]]. Affected by the [[Black Breath]], Merry lay almost senseless on the ground, hearing the voice of Dernhelm standing over the body of Théoden -- who had been mortally wounded by the Witch-king -- defying the Nazgûl. He was startled as he opened his eyes to find that Dernhelm was really [[Éowyn]], the King's niece. After Éowyn was thrown down, perhaps mortally wounded, Merry rose to attack the Witch-king to protect her. He stabbed the Witch-king through the calf with the [[Daggers_of_Westernesse|Barrow-blade]] he still bore, thus breaking the spell of invulnerability surrounding the Wraith. He fainted as Éowyn finished off the Witch-king with a thrust into the head.

Almost killed by the Black Breath, he was revived with Éowyn by Aragorn in the [[Houses of Healing]]. Because of his condition he was unable to go to the [[Battle of the Morannon]], but attended afterwards the burial of [[Théoden]], at which he wept greatly. Upon his departure for the Shire, he was given a special horn by Éomer and Éowyn as a parting gift.

Upon the return to the Shire, he was, with Pippin, the primary leader of the uprising against [[Sharkey]] and his [[Ruffians]]. ==Character==

He was a good friend of [[Frodo Baggins]], who eventually became the [[Ringbearer]], and [[Peregrin Took]], a young relative. He was one of the few (if any) who saw [[Bilbo]], Frodo's uncle, actually use the [[One Ring]]. He also managed to read, at least in part, Bilbo's book: ''[[There and Back Again]]'', where he learned about the Ring.

He can easily be recognized as a very sharp Hobbit, and his tone throughout ''[[The Lord of the Rings]]'' depicts him as practical, loyal, resourceful, and the best able to cope with the sudden happenings that drew him out of his peaceful home. He was also praised by [[Aragorn II]] as having a 'stout heart'. He was apparently much trusted by Frodo, who sent him along with [[Fatty Bolger]] to [[Crickhollow]] to prepare his newly-bought home.

In the third draft Donnamire`s birth and death years change to 1254 - 1348. Both their son, Jago, and daughter Jemina, has disappeared and the draft only shows Donnamire and Hugo are ancestors of Folco Boffin.

In the final and published genealogy in LoTR Donnamire`s birth year were changed again. It now shows as 1256 and their descendant Folco Boffin has vanished from the Took genealogy.

Though his fleet sailed rapidly, he was not in time to save [[Arthedain]] or [[Arvedui]], its last king. His massive fleet - it filled [[Mithlond]], [[Harlond (Lindon)|Harlond]] and [[Forlond]] - was hailed by the Men that had survived the last deafeat, and the Elves also. To Gondor's standards, the expeditionary force was mediocre in size. It did, however, include cavalry from [[Rhovanion (Realm)|Rhovanion]], which would prove useful on the wide lands of the North.

With [[Círdan]], Eärnur travelled East, and cleansed the lands of Orcs and other servants of Angmar. All fled before the might of the Gondorian cavalry, with Eärnur at its head. At the same time, [[Glorfindel]] came west from [[Rivendell]]. When finally the Witch-king, clad in black, came forth near [[Fornost]], many of the horses fled in terror. So did Eäarnur's steed, and it took some time before the Captain of Gondor could regain control. The Witch-king laughed at this seeming retreat, but his victory would not last long. The Elves of Rivendell entered the battlefield, and the Witch-king fled before the [[unseen|might]] of [[Glorfindel]]. Fleeing in despair, Eärnur wanted to pursue him, but Glorfindel spoke againt it:

Seven years later, the Witch-king renewed his challenge, and this time, Eärnur could not be stopped. With a small escort of knights, he rode past the gates of Minas Morgul. None were ever seen again. In the previous year a two-pronged attack had been launched upon Gondor by the [[Haradrim]] and the [[Wainriders]]. In response, King Ondoher led the main army north to counter the Easterling invasion at [[Dagorlad]] and was defeated. Eärnil was [[Captain of the Southern Army|commander]] of Gondor's southern army and guarded [[Pelargir]]. Eärnil led his army to the Crossings of the [[Poros]] were he won a astounding victory over the Haradrim. This enabled him to turn his attention to the invading Wainriders. The Wainriders, certain of victory, were celebrating their success before they would enter [[Minas Anor]]. They were unaware of Eärnil's victory in the south and were taken by surprise when Eärnil suddenly attacked them. As a result Eärnil won the [[Battle of the Camp]].

After the threat was eliminated Gondor's attention shifted towards [[Steward of Gondor|Steward]] [[Pelendur]] and the Council of Gondor, for King Ondoher along with his two sons were slain at [[Dagorlad]]. Both he and prince [[Arvedui]] of [[Arthedain]] (sucessor state of [[Arnor]]) claimed the throne. Arvedui based his claim on that he was the direct descendant of [[Isildur]] (second High King of [[Arnor]] and [[Gondor]] and uncle to [[Meneldil]] first King of [[Gondor]]), and as the husband of [[Fíriel]], only surviving child of King Ondoher. but Eärnil was elected king for his deeds, heritage, and because the Steward, Pelendur, claimed that "The crown and royalty of Gondor belongs solely to the heirs of Meneldil, son of [[Anárion]], to whom Isildur relinquished this realm. In Gondor this heritage is reckoned through the sons only; and we have not heard that the law is otherwise in Arnor." He reigned as Eärnil II.

Aside from being a gifted general Eärnil also was a wise ruler. He sent messages to Arvedui announcing that he received the crown of Gondor, according to the laws and theneeds of the [[South-kingdom]], "but I do not forget the royalty of [[Arnor]], nor deny our kinship, nor wish that the realms of [[Elendil]] be estranged. I will send to your aid when you have need, so far as I am able." And at last in the autumn of 1973, messages came to Gondor that Arthedain was in great trouble, and that the [[Witch-king of Angmar]] was preparing a final stroke against it. Then Eärnil sent his son [[Eärnur]] north with a fleet, as swiftly as he coud, and with as great a strength as he could spare to aid Arvedui (now king). Eärnur arrived too late to save Arthedain and Arvedui who had fled north (and was drowned in the [[Icebay of Forochel]]) but manage to defeated the witch-kingdom of [[Angmar]] in the [[Battle of Fornost]]with the help of [[Círdan]] Lord of [[Lindon]] and [[Glorfindel]] with an army from [[Rivendell]]. There Eärnur earned the hatred of the Witch-king.

However, Eärnil was not able to withstand the takeover of [[Minas Ithil]] by the Ringwraiths. Minas Anor was renamed [[Minas Tirith]] ("Tower of the Guard") and Minas Ithil was called [[Minas Morgul]] ("Tower of Sorcery").

Eärnil died in 2043 Third Age and was succeeded by his son Eärnur, who was as good a general as his father but lacked his wisdom.

Eärnil's line was short-lived, however, and ended with the presumed loss of his son [[Eärnur]] in [[Minas Morgul]].

==Later events==
The loss of Artamir was a turning point in the history of [[Middle-earth]]. Had he not perished, the line of Kings would almost certainly have survived the coming crisis and lasted into the third millennium of the [[Third Age]]. A thousand years later, [[Aragorn II|Aragorn]] would have found [[Minas Tirith in Gondor|Minas Tirith]] ruled not by a Steward but by a legitimate King, so preventing him from claiming the Crown himself. The unknown Wainrider who cut down Artamir, then, unknowingly paved the way for the reunification of [[Arnor]] and Gondor more than a thousand years later.

In 1944 Third Age the [[Wainriders]] invaded Gondor from the east while their allies, the [[Haradrim]] invaded Gondor from the south. Ondoher and his eldest son Artamir led the main army close to the [[Black Gate]] where they clashed with the Wainriders. The left wing of Ondoher's army was commanded by Adrahil, the Prince of [[Dol Amroth]]. The right wing was commanded by Minothar, the captain of Gondor's armies. The center was commanded by Ondoher himself.

In the ensuing battle Ondoher was slain together with his eldest son and heir [[Artamir]], and Gondor defeated.
The rearguard of the army defended [[Ithilien]] while Adrahil got help from General Eärnil who had defeated the [[Haradrim]].

Although Eärnil finally defeated the Wainriders it was learned that Ondoher's second son [[Faramir son of Ondoher|Faramir]] was slain with his father while law required that at least one heir was left behind.

No-one with a valid claim to the throne could be found, and Arvedui of Arthedain claimed the throne. Although Arvedui had a strong claim by his way of his wife Fíriel, who by ancient [[Númenórean]] law now should have become Ruling Queen, the throne was granted by Steward [[Pelendur]] to the general Eärnil, who would reign as King [[Eärnil II]].
