Barrels Out of Bond is the 9th chapter of The Hobbit.

Following their capture by the Wood-elves, Thorin Oakenshield and the Dwarves are imprisoned on the orders of the Elvenking (Thranduil, father of Legolas), with Thorin in the deepest, darkest dungeon. Bilbo - who uses his magic ring to escape capture - one again proves his usefulness by conveying secret messages between the dwarves. The gates to the caves are sealed by magic; sometimes he is able to slip out with hunting parties but he spends a miserable life in the deepest, darkest corners of the palace.

One day, while wandering about, Bilbo discovers that the gates are not the only way out of the caves: a stream flowed through the lowest regions of the palace although the exit was blocked with a portcullis. As there were no vines in Mirkwood, the elves drank wines that "were brought from far away, from their kinsfolk in the South, or from the vineyards of Men in distant lands"; the empty wine barrels were floated back down the stream to Lake-town, from where the wine came.

One night Galion, the butler, and the Chief Guard sneak downstairs to the wine cellars to drink of the wine; they get drunk, and fall asleep. Bilbo, still invisible, spots his opportunity: he steals the keys and sets the Dwarves free.

Bilbo stuffs them into the empty wine barrels, padding them with straw and drilling air holes in the barrels. The elves float the barrels down the river; the plan came close to ruin when the elves almost open the barrels due to their weight, however, the dwarves successfully escape to Lake-town.
A Warm Welcome is the 10th chapter of The Hobbit
Following the Dwarves escape from the wood-elves, Bilbo listens to the talk of the raftmen. He realizes they were very fortunate to have escaped the way they did. He sees that the path that Beorn had told them to follow came to a "doubtful and little used end at the eastern edge of the forest."
After a while they come to the Long Lake, Bilbo marvels at it's size.
They come to Lake Town; a small collection of huts and buildings built on stilts over the water. The ruins of a bigger town could be seen rotting away along the shores.
The first Dwarf to be unloaded was Thorin, who was barely alive, and had a look like "a savage look like a dog who that has been chained and forgotten in a kennel for a week."
Bilbo instructs him to "slap your arms and rub your legs."
When Bilbo knocks on the barrels, only six Dwarves are able to answer.
Dwalin and Balin were the worst off. Bifur and Bofur were better off, but wouldn't help.
Fili and Kili had a better time of it, and had only a few bruises, but Fili says he hopes he never smells apples again, as his barrels was full of the smell.
Bombur was asleep or unconsious. Dori, Nori, Ori, Oin, and Gloin were barely alive.
They go to Lake Town, where Thorin requests to see the Master of Lake Town. He was feasting at the time and all the Dwarves join him, they were famished with hunger since they didn't eat for several days.
They get a warm welcoming, and Thorin, the grandson of Thror, the king under the mountain, is treated as a hero.
The Dwarves feelings for Bilbo improved, and they "made a great fuss of him."
Bilbo had such a bad cold that his speeches at banquets were limited to "Thag you very buch."
After two weeks at Lake Town, Thorin and Co. decide to leave for Lonely Mountain.
