Change re. mallorn-trees in Valinor?
In Fellowship, Haldir says he hasn’t heard that there are mellyrn in the West:

:“Alas for Lothlórien that I love! It would be a poor life in a land where no mallorn grew. But if there are mallorn-trees beyond the Great Sea, none have reported it.”

Is that worth mentioning? It seems to show a change in JRRT’s thinking. If the mallorn originally came from Valinor, you’d think Haldir would know it—why would Galadriel keep that a secret? Shoutingboy (talk) 06:40, 5 July 2023 (UTC)

:"A Description of the Island of Númenor," probably written about 1960 and published in Unfinished Tales, makes it clear that mallorn do originate in Valinor.
:All about that place, up the seaward slopes and far into the land, grew the evergreen and fragrant trees that they brought out of the West, and so throve there that the Eldar said that almost it was fair as a haven in Eressëa. They were the greatest delight of Númenor, and they were remembered in many songs long after they had perished for ever, for few ever flowered east of the Land of Gift: oiolairë and lairelossë, nessamelda, vardarianna, taniquelassë, and yavannamírë with its globed and scarlet fruits.... only here grew the mighty golden tree malinornë, reaching after five centuries a height scarce less than it achieved in Eressëa itself. Its bark was silver and smooth, and its boughs somewhat upswept after the manner of the beech; but it never grew save with a single trunk. Its leaves, like those of the beech but greater, were pale green above and beneath were silver, glistering in the sun; in the autumn they did not fall, but turned to pale gold. In the spring it bore golden blossom in clusters like a cherry, which bloomed on during the summer; and as soon as the flowers opened the leaves fell, so that through spring and summer a grove of malinorni was carpeted and roofed with gold, but its pillars were of grey silver.1 Its fruit was a nut with a silver shale; and some were given as a gift by Tar-Aldarion, the sixth King of Númenor, to King Gil-galad of Lindon. They did not take root in that land; but Gil-galad gave some to his kinswoman Galadriel, and under her power they grew and flourished in the guarded land of Lothlórien beside the River Anduin, until the High Elves at last left Middle-earth; but they did not reach the height or girth of the great groves of Númenor. Cesinde (talk) 06:56, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
:: I'm not questioning that! I'm just saying, at the time Tolkien wrote FOTR, that text seems to indicate that he thought mellyrn were indigenous to Middle-earth, and he changed his mind later. ::::I agree that it's ambiguous! I'm just saying, Haldir had no idea whether there were mellyrn in the West. He might not have been close to Galadriel but he'd been there a long time, and given how important mellyrn were, you'd think she would have said at some point "I brought the first acorns here" vs. "they were here when I got here". From what he said, it sounds like JRRT's idea at the time was that they were native to Lothlorien. The mallorn (pl. mellyrn) was a kind of large tree growing in Valinor, Númenor and the Westlands.

Description
Mellyrn are trees of immense size, especially when growing on Númenor. They are also described as similar to birches: their bark was smooth and silver-grey, and the leaves were green on top and silver underneath; they turned golden in autumn and remained on the tree through the winter to fall to cover the ground in the spring, when new leaves sprouted. Golden flowers bloomed on the branches.

The trunk of the tree divided to a crown of many branches, and the Galadhrim used the space to build telain (a sort of platform) or buildings on the top of the trees. The leaves also had practical uses, such as for packing rations of lembas. The Galadhrim used the inner bark to make hithlain.

Frodo Baggins explained that he could feel the life of the tree when he touched a mallorn in Lothlórien.

History
Mallorn-trees originally grew in Valinor and from there were spread to Tol Eressëa by the Elves once the Lonely Isle was moved to its final position by Ulmo. The Elves of Tol Eressëa brought mallorn-trees to the Men of Númenor and they grew on the shores around the Bay of Eldanna in that land. Even Tar-Aldarion, the great Ship-King, did not cut down these trees.

Mallorn-nuts were given by Tar-Aldarion to his friend Gil-galad, the Noldorin King of Lindon. The mellyrn did not grow in Lindon, but Galadriel took some nuts with her to Lothlórien, where they grew to immense heights (but not as great as the groves of Númenor). Lothlórien became known as the Golden Wood because of them.

Caras Galadhon, the city of Galadriel and Celeborn in Lothlórien, was built in the branches of huge mallorn-trees. The Fellowship spent the night in a flet in a mallorn-tree nearby, and were later given lembas wrapped in mallorn-leaves.

Galadriel gave Samwise Gamgee a box of soil containing a single silver mallorn nut. After the War of the Ring and the Scouring of the Shire, Sam planted the nut in the Party Field where the Party Tree had stood before its felling. It was the only mallorn-tree in Middle-earth outside of Lórien. When the tree bloomed in the next summer it was said that all the Shire became golden from the flowers.

Etymology
The word comes from malt ("gold") and orn ("tree"). In Gondor Sindarin the same word was pronounced Malthorn.

Elven rope was a rope made by the Elves of Lothlórien. During the War of the Ring, when the Company of the Ring were set to depart from Lothlórien, the Galadhrim presented them with many gifts, to aid them in their quest. Among the gifts there were coils of rope. The rope was slender, but strong, silken to the touch, and grey of hue like the elven-cloaks and was able to withstand the greatest weight. The rope was made of hithlain, which was a strong fibre made from the inner bark of mallorn trees.

Later, when Frodo and Sam needed to descend a cliff in the Emyn Muil, Sam remembered the Elven rope he was carrying and unpacked it for the task. When Sam measured it, it came to 30 ells in length, which was enough for them to reach the bottom of the drop. After they had made the descent Sam gave the rope a last tug and the startled hobbits watched as the rope slithered down. It showed no signs of having frayed so it was Sam's belief that the rope untied itself.

The Galadhrim used the inner bark (bast) to make hithlain.

Frodo Baggins explained that he could feel the life of the tree when he touched a mallorn in Lothlórien.

Hithlain was a strong fibre made from the inner bark (bast) of mallorn trees. It was grey and felt silky. The Galadhrim of Lothlórien used it to make ropes, which were flexible and light, yet extremely robust. It may also have been used in the creation of the grey Elven cloaks of Lothlórien.

Sam and Frodo climbed down a cliff of the Emyn Muil with the help of a hithlain rope, which Sam tied to a stump at the top. When Sam tugged the rope in annoyance that they'd have to leave it and it would help Gollum get down, it came loose and fell on him. Frodo thought Sam had tied it badly, but Sam thought it came because he called it.

When Frodo and Sam tied their Elven rope around Gollum's ankle he screamed in pain. Apparently the material, or as Gollum claimed, the fact that Elves made it caused him agony when it touched him.
