David I. Salo (born February, 1969) is a linguist who worked on languages for The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy, translating songs, dialogue, and inscriptions into Quenya and Sindarin, and developing or expanding languages for Men, Dwarves and Orcs.

David Salo lives in Madison, Wisconsin.

Tolkien's languages
Salo's interest in Tolkien's languages arose when he read Tolkien's work as a boy, but press interviews date his extensive knowledge of the languages to the years after the completion of his undergraduate degree. In 1998 he founded the Elfling mailing list for Tolkienist language enthusiasts. In 2004 he published a linguistic analysis of Sindarin: A Gateway to Sindarin.

David Salo was contracted for The Lord of the Rings movies to write all the material in Elvish, Dwarven and other languages for the movies, as well as assist with other language-related items such as the Tengwar and Cirth inscriptions which appear in the movies. Salo also wrote Elvish lyrics for the movie soundtracks.

For the movies Salo had to create many 'missing' Sindarin and Quenya words, all of them based on existing words, and grammatically and semantically fitting in with the known material. Since the other languages used in the movies, Khuzdul and the Black Speech, were not really developed, Salo created entire new languages which fit in with the known words, often called neo-Khuzdul and neo-Black speech to set them apart from Tolkien's original languages.

From a post by Salo on the Elfling list:

In case we're going to use the Template:Book for magazines and journals it would be great to have a line for "issue", or something similar. I'm thinking that this line would add text to the "title" but not in italics (if you see what I mean).
It seems like the Mithbot made some strange edits back in 2010 - at least on one occasion it changed the link to The Hobbit to The Hobbits. I merged Melkor with Morgoth, as per talk page. Would you have time to look into letting Mithbot handle the relinking? As you can see, this solution utilises the DynamicPageList extension. It would be useful for this purpose, but no doubt it will come in handy for other tasks too. Could you install it? -- 16:11, 18 June 2012 (UTC)
Article deletion/merge
Someone created an article on this wiki for my wife, Dorothea Salo. Aside from being extremely out of date and inaccurate, it also seems to be getting Dorothea a significant number of unwanted e-mails that really ought to be directed to me. Dorothea hasn't been directly involved in Tolkien fandom for many, many years and she's not running the Elfling mailing list any more -- I am. I'm not sure about your policies and procedures, but it would save Dorothea a good deal of trouble and worry if we could get that article (and links to it) removed; any relevant information can be put on my page, David Salo. I know that I can't make drastic changes like that by myself, but I also don't see the need of going through some drawn-out deletion discussion; Dorothea is not in any way a "public figure", and she doesn't really want to be discussed online in this sort of venue. As for me, I gather that I am in some minor sense a "public figure", so I'm just going to have to put up with it, but I don't see why she should pay the penalty for my sins! :) David Salo 23:38, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
