History of Arda
The Fourth Age began after Sauron was finally defeated, when his Ruling Ring was destroyed, and all the Elves but one left Middle-earth for the Uttermost West. The Fourth Age is also marked by the crowning of the next king of Gondor. Aragorn Son Of Arathorn. And the next queen of Gondor. Arwen daughter of Elrond.

Tolkien's writing does not provide information on more than the first few centuries of this age, so it is not known when it ended, if it ever did.

This age was (presumably) marked by the recovery of the Númenorean kingdoms in exile (Arnor and Gondor), the final ascent of Men and the total wane of the Elves.

Tolkien said that he thought the distance between the end of the Third Age and the 20th century A.D. was about 6000 years, and that in 1958 it should have been around the end of the Fifth Age if the Fourth and Fifth Ages were about the same length as the Second and Third Ages. He said, however, in a letter written in 1958 that he believed the Ages had quickened and that it was about the end of the Sixth Age/beginning of the Seventh.

For a complete list of events during the Fourth Age, see the Timeline.

Morgul blades are magical, poisoned daggers used by the Nazgûl.

At Weathertop, during his journey to Rivendell with the One Ring, the Hobbit Frodo Baggins was stabbed by the Lord of the Nazgûl. A fragment of the blade remained within the wound, working its way toward his heart and threatening to turn Frodo into a wraith. Elrond was able to remove the shard and heal the wound, but each year on the anniversary of his stabbing Frodo became seriously ill. Only his eventual departure to Eldamar offered a permanent cure.

The Morgul Blades disintergrate if anyone but the owner/wielder of the Morgul Blade touches or picks up the blade.

Athelas (or Kingsfoil) is known to slow the poisonous effect of the morgul-blade. This treatment is also effective against other Mordor illnesses, such as the Black Breath.

Another victim of a morgul blade was Boromir, the eleventh Steward of Gondor (not the Boromir of Frodo's company). He eventually died of his wound but did not become a wraith.

Origins
In the Middle-earth Role Playing games, the Morgul Blades are said to have been forged in the fires of Minas Morgul by the Witch-king of Angmar and he embalmed them with his dark sorcery, but this is considered non-canonical as it does not appear outside of the role playing material.
