'''Thranduil''', the '''Elvenking''', was a [[Sindar|Sinda]] and King of the [[Silvan Elves]] in the [[Woodland Realm]]. Thranduil was son of [[Oropher]] and father of [[Legolas]].

== History ==
=== Early History ===
[[Image:Alan_Lee_-_%27%27Well%2C_here_is_Mirkwood%21%27%27_said_Gandalf.jpg|thumb|200px|''Mirkwood'' by [[Alan Lee]]]]
Thranduil was one of many Sindar who travelled eastward from [[Lindon]] at the beginning of the [[Second Age]]. He eventually ended up in [[Mirkwood|Greenwood the Great]], where Silvan Elves of [[Nandorin]] descent lived. His father Oropher was taken by them as lord and founded the [[Woodland Realm]] with the capital at [[Amon Lanc]].

The few Sindar who had come with Oropher and Thranduil were soon merged with the Silvan Elves, adopting their language and taking names of Silvan form and style.

In [[Second Age 3434|S.A. 3434]] Thranduil followed his father, and some thirty thousand lightly armed Elves in the [[War of the Last Alliance]]. In the [[Battle of Dagorlad]] Oropher was slain with the greater part of his people but his son survived. After the [[Siege of Barad-dûr]] in [[Second Age 3441|S.A. 3441]] when Sauron was defeated, Thranduil led the remainder of his people north back to the Woodland Realm, where he was crowned king.

=== Third Age ===
[[Image:Anna Lee - Thranduil and Legolas.jpg|right|thumb|200px|Thranduil and young [[Legolas]] by [[Anna Lee]]]]
With the return of [[Sauron]] around [[Third Age 1050|T.A. 1050]] southern Greenwood became dangerous and was renamed Mirkwood. Creatures like great spiders came to dwell in Mirkwood and Thranduil's folk retreated to the northeastern corner of Mirkwood, where they fortified themselves near the [[Forest River]].

====[[The Hobbits|The Quest for Erebor]]====
One day in [[Third Age 2941|T.A. 2941]] Thranduil and some of his folk were feasting in the woods when they were repeatedly disturbed by a party of [[Dwarves]] and a [[Hobbits|Hobbit]] called [[Bilbo Baggins]]. After the third disturbance the Elves captured the leader of the Dwarves, [[Thorin Oakenshield]], and a short time later also his companions. Thorin was brought before Thranduil but did not reveal the reason for their journey through Mirkwood. So the Elves took his sword [[Orcrist]] and imprisoned him seperated from his companions. But Bilbo Baggins, who escaped captivity by using his magic [[The One Ring|ring]], was able to help his friends to escape in barrels on the [[Forest River]].
[[Image:Alan Lee - Barrels out of Bond.jpg|thumb|200px|''Barrels out of Bond'' by [[Alan Lee]]|left]]

After the Dwarves' escape Thranduil sent out messengers, who soon told him about the death of the [[Dragons|Dragon]] [[Smaug]], who had brutalized the Grey Elves for years. He knew about the treasures, which Smaug had hoarded, and so he set out towards the [[Lonely Mountain]] with a company of Elves with spears and bows. On the way they met messengers from [[Bard I|Bard]] in [[Esgaroth|Lake-town]] who was seeking aid for his destroyed town. After the Elves had given food to the Lake-men and had helped them to build shelters against the oncoming winter, both Thranduil and Bard led their forces towards the Lonely Mountain. They were very surprised when they found out that Thorin and his company had survived Smaugs attacks, had taken possession of the Lonely Mountain and its treasures and that Thorin Oakenshield had claimed the title [[King under the Mountain]].

Bard demanded a part of the treasure for [[Dale]] and Lake-town, which Smaug had destroyed, as well as for himself because he had shot the dragon. When Thorin refused to give away parts of the treasure, Thranduil and Bard sieged the mountain and Thorin sent for aid from his cousin [[Dáin Ironfoot|Dáin II Ironfoot]]. After a few days Dain's host approached and fight seemed unavoidable. But in the night Bilbo brought the [[Arkenstone]], a great jewel that Thorin valued above all, to Bard and Thranduil in order to make Thorin open to negotiations. Thranduil was favourably impressed by Bilbo and urged him to remain in order to avoid Thorin's wrath.

The next morning Bard and Thranduil entered into negotiations with Thorin, who erupted in anger when he learned that Bard and Thranduil possessed the Arkenstone. But he agreed to pay one-fourteenth share of the treasure in exchange for the stone. The next day Dain arrived with his forces and although Thranduil was reluctant to start a war over gold, the dwarves proceeded to attack.

[[Image:Capucine Mazille - The Battle of Five Armies.jpg|thumb|200px|''The Battle of Five Armies'' by Capucine Mazille]]
At the last moment, when the battle was almost joined between the two sides Gandalf intervened and revealed that while they were bickering amongst themselves, the [[Orcs]] of the [[Misty Mountains]] and [[Grey Mountains]] under [[Bolg]] were using the opportunity to march against them. They had been incited by Gandalf's earlier slaying of the [[Great Goblin]], but had now mobilized for a full-scale attack after hearing news of the death of the Dragon and the now relatively unguarded treasure hoard. The three commanders agreed that the Orcs were the enemies of all and previous grievances between them were put on hold in face of the greater threat. So the [[Battle of Five Armies]] began.
[[Image:Alan Lee - December (1999 Calendar).jpg|thumb|190px|''Thorin's Burial'' by [[Alan Lee]]|left]]
Thranduil's host was positioned on the southern side of the Mountain, and they were the first to charge. Many Elves were slain and things looked grim when the [[Eagles]] arrived on the battlefield. They turned the tide and the battle was won. Thorin had been mortally wounded on the field, and his nephews [[Fíli]] and [[Kíli]] died defending him as he lay on the ground. Thorin died soon after the battle, after meeting Bilbo one last time. Thranduil laid [[Orcrist]] on Thorin's tomb, where it was said to glow in warning when foes approached.

The victors divided the treasure and Bard took Bilbo's fourteenth share of the gold and silver in return for the Arkenstone, whereupon he shared his reward with the Master of Lake-town and gave Thranduil the emeralds of Girion. Bilbo, despite having forfeited his share, was offered a rich reward but refused to take more than two small chests of gold and silver. When Bilbo and Gandalf bid farewell to Thranduil Bilbo gave him a necklace of silver and pearls. Thranduil gave the [[Hobbits|hobbit]] the title "Elf-friend" and returned with the remainder of his host to his realm in Mirkwood.

==== The Hunt for Gollum====

On [[21 March|March 21]], [[Third Age 3018|T.A. 3018]] [[Aragorn]] delivered [[Gollum]] as a prisoner to Thranduil. He was guarded day and night, but the Elves pitied him and allowed him to climb a tree that stood alone. When one night in June of [[Third Age 3018|T.A. 3018]], Gollum refused to come down, the Elves were attacked by Orcs and Gollum could escape in the confusion. Thranduil sent his son [[Legolas]] to Rivendell to inform [[Elrond]], and in the [[Council of Elrond]] Legolas was selected as one of the nine members of the [[Fellowship of the Ring|Company of the Ring]].<ref>{{FR|II2}}</ref>

Another member of the Company of the Ring was the Dwarf [[Gimli]], the son of [[Glóin]] of Thorin's band. The gradually established friendship between both helps to reconcile Thranduil's people and the Dwarves. It is amusing to note that one of the Dwarves imprisoned by Thranduil was [[Glóin son of Gróin|Glóin]], Gimli's father, and both Legolas and Gimli most likely grew up hearing disparaging tales involving the other's father. Nonetheless, both end up on a quest together, and develop an unprecedented friendship between Elf and Dwarf.

====War of the Ring====
On [[15 March|March 15]], [[Third Age 3019|T.A. 3019]], an army of [[Sauron]] from [[Dol Guldur]], tasked with destroying the Woodland Realm, attacked Mirkwood. There was a [[Rhovanion Campaign (WotR)|long battle under the trees]] and the woods were set on fire. But in the end Thranduil defeated the invaders. On [[6 April|April 6]], Thranduil met [[Celeborn]], the Lord of Lórien, in the midst of Mirkwood. Celeborn's forces had crossed the [[Anduin]] and had stormed Dol Guldur. [[Galadriel]], the Lady of Lórien, had come after them, throwing down the walls of Dol Guldur and laying bare its pits. Thranduil had cleared all the orcs and foul beings from North Mirkwood, so that the forest was cleansed and Sauron's empire in the North was destroyed.

Because the Shadow over Mirkwood was lifted, Thranduil and Celeborn renamed it [[Eryn Lasgalen]], the Wood of Greenleaves. They divided it up, so that Thranduil received the northern part as far as the Mountains, and Celeborn took the southern part below the [[Narrows]], naming it [[East Lórien]]. The wide forest inbetween was given to the [[Beornings]] and the [[Woodmen]]<ref name="AppB">{{App|B}}</ref>.

=== [[Fourth Age]] ===

After the destruction of [[Dol Guldur]] and the cleansing of Mirkwood, Thranduil and the Wood-Elves remained untroubled for many years.

Legolas and the Wood-Elves later worked together with Gimli and the Dwarves to rebuild and improve [[Minas Tirith]], capital city of [[Gondor]], the realm of their mutual friend King [[Aragorn|Aragorn Elessar]]<ref name="AppB"/>.

Thranduil's ultimate fate is unknown; he probably passed over the [[Belegaer|Sea]] to [[Valinor]] eventually.
[[Image:Marya Filatova - Thranduil.jpg|right|thumb|200px|''Thranduil'' by [[Marya Filatova]]]]
== Personality ==

Thranduil lived in attunement with nature, wearing a crown of flowers, or autumn berries, according to the season, and his banner was, naturally enough, green in colour. He loved the forest though it was dark and dangerous in many parts and enjoyed hunting and feasting among the trees with his people.

== Dwelling ==

Thranduil had his halls underground, partly in memory (it was said) of the mighty but long-lost [[Menegroth]] of [[Doriath]]. They lay near the Forest River behind great gates.

== Etymology ==
The name '''Thranduil''' means "Vigorous spring" in [[Sindarin]], from ''[[tharan]]'' "vigorous" and ''[[tuil]]'' "spring". Though the name is said to be of [[Silvan]] origin, Tolkien's notes on ''tharan'' state it was used only in Sindarin.<ref>{{PE|17}}, p. 187.</ref>

== Portrayal in Adaptations ==
:Thranduil is referred to as "Elvenking Thranduil", using both his title from ''The Hobbit'' and his name from ''The Lord of the Rings'', to accomodate players who have only read ''The Hobbit''. Thranduil first appears in the level "Barrels Out of Bond", in which he can be overheard speaking about the [[White Council]] and their attack on [[Dol Guldur]]. He returns as a conversation partner in the last level, "The Clouds Burst", in which he and Gandalf ask the player, in the persona of Bilbo, to deliver a message to Bard. No voice actor is specified for this part.
:Thranduil is a hero for the Elven faction. In the good campaign, he shows up after the [[Battle of Dale]], and participates in the Siege of [[Dol Guldur]].

=== Third Age ===

==== The Hunt for Gollum====

====War of the Ring====

=== [[Fourth Age]] ===

== Personality ==

Thranduil lived in attunement with nature, wearing a crown of flowers, or autumn berries, according to the season, and his banner was, naturally enough, green in colour. He loved the forest though it was dark and dangerous in many parts and enjoyed hunting and feasting among the trees with his people.

== Dwelling ==

Thranduil had his halls underground, partly in memory (it was said) of the mighty but long-lost [[Menegroth]] of [[Doriath]]. They lay near the Forest River behind great gates.

== Etymology ==
187.</ref>

====War of the Ring====

'''Thranduil''', the '''Elvenking''', was a [[Sindar|Sinda]] and King of the [[Silvan Elves]] in the [[Woodland Realm]]. Thranduil was son of [[Oropher]] and father of [[Legolas]].

== History ==
=== Early History ===

=== Third Age ===

====[[The Hobbits|The Quest for Erebor]]====

==== The Hunt for Gollum====

'''Thranduil''', the '''Elvenking''', was a [[Sindar|Sinda]] and King of the [[Silvan Elves]] in the [[Woodland Realm]]. Thranduil was son of [[Oropher]] and father of [[Legolas]].

== History ==
=== Early History ===

=== Third Age ===

====[[The Hobbits|The Quest for Erebor]]====

==== The Hunt for Gollum====

====War of the Ring====

=== [[Fourth Age]] ===

== Personality ==

Thranduil lived in attunement with nature, wearing a crown of flowers, or autumn berries, according to the season, and his banner was, naturally enough, green in colour. He loved the forest though it was dark and dangerous in many parts and enjoyed hunting and feasting among the trees with his people.

== Dwelling ==

Thranduil had his halls underground, partly in memory (it was said) of the mighty but long-lost [[Menegroth]] of [[Doriath]]. They lay near the Forest River behind great gates.

== Etymology ==
187.</ref>
'''Eöl''', known as the '''[[Dark Elf]]''', was an [[Elves|Elf]] of the [[Elder Days]]. ==History==
<center>{{quote|You are of the house of Eöl, Maeglin, my son, and not of the Golodhrim. In this you shall obey me, or I will set you in bonds.|''[[The Silmarillion]]'', [[Of Maeglin]]}}</center>

Eöl was originally part of the royal house of King [[Thingol|Elu Thingol]]. Eöl was unhappy in his homeland of [[Doriath]], and when the [[Girdle of Melian]] was raised around the kingdom, he left to dwell in the dark forest of [[Nan Elmoth]], east of his homeland.

Eöl was a skillful craftsman and master sword smith. Among his greatest works were two swords made from the iron of a meteorite, [[Anglachel]] and [[Anguirel]]. Anglachel he gave to Thingol as payment for dwelling in Nan Elmoth, and it would later become the sword borne by [[Túrin|Túrin Turambar]]. Eöl's smith craft was especially admired by the [[Dwarves]], and he shared a rare friendship with the Dwarves of [[Nogrod]] and [[Belegost]] in the [[Blue Mountains]]. Eöl also devised the metal known as [[galvorn]], from which he forged the armor that he used when traveling far from Nan Elmoth.

In the early third century of the First Age, Eöl came upon [[Aredhel]], the sister of King [[Turgon]] and called the [[Aredhel|White Lady]] of the [[Noldor|Ñoldor]]. She had become lost in Nan Elmoth, and Eöl used his enchantments to draw her deeper into the wood and ensnare her. She became his wife, and in the year 320 bore him a son, [[Maeglin]].

In the summer of First Age 345, Eöl travelled into the Blue Mountains to feast with the Dwarves of Nogrod, and returned home to find that his wife and son had left two days earlier. Mounting a horse, he gave chase, and eventually discovered them at the [[Ford of Brithiach]]. Realizing that Aredhel was returning to Gondolin with his son, Eöl followed them. He found his way to the [[Dry River]], and that secret way led him to the gates of Gondolin itself. There he was captured and taken to the King.

Turgon at first welcomed Eöl as a kinsman, but under the King's Law one who had found the way to the [[Gondolin|Hidden City]] was not permitted to leave, on pain of death. Enraged at the loss of his freedom, Eöl chose death, for himself and his son, and cast a poisoned javelin at Maeglin. Aredhel stepped in front of her son, and the poison in the dart soon killed her. In punishment for his crime, the [[Gondolindrim]] cast Eöl over the steep cliff of the [[Caragdûr]].

The meaning of ''Eöl'' is unknown, and also to which language it pertains.
'''Fëanor''' ([[Sindarin|S]], pron. {{IPA|[ˈfe.anor]}}) was a prince of the [[Noldor]], eldest and most beloved son of [[Finwë]]. He had the greatest skill of word and hand, a renowned craftsman, gem-smith, and warrior. Fëanor created the [[Silmarils]], which was his most famous deed, and also wrought the [[palantíri]] and the [[Fëanorian lamps]]. In addition, he invented the widely-used [[Tengwar]] script. His passionate hatred of [[Morgoth]] and terrible [[Oath of Fëanor|oath]] led directly to the great triumphs and tragedies of the First Age.

[[Image:Feanor_device.gif|right]]

== History ==
===Life in Tirion===
[[image:Feanor emblema.png|left|120px]]
Fëanáro Curufinwë (as was his original name in [[Quenya]], pron. [[Noldorin|N]] {{IPA|[ˌfe.aˈnaːro ˌkuruˈfinwe]}}, [[Vanyarin|V]] {{IPA|[ˌɸe.aˈnaːro ˌkuruˈɸinwe]}}) was the eldest son of Finwë, the [[High King of the Noldor]], and his first wife [[Míriel Serindë]]. He drew so much of Míriel's life energy when he was born that she grew weary of life, and departed to [[Lórien in Valinor|Lórien]], where she voluntarily left her corporeal form, and died. Finwë remarried, and had two more sons, Fëanor's half-brothers [[Fingolfin]] and [[Finarfin]], and two daughters, [[Daughters of Finwë|Findis]] and [[Daughters of Finwë|Irimë]]. Fëanor wedded [[Nerdanel]], daughter of [[Mahtan]], who bore him [[Sons of Fëanor|seven sons]]: [[Maedhros]], [[Maglor]], [[Celegorm]], [[Caranthir]], [[Curufin]], [[Amrod]] and [[Amras]].

At this time, [[Melkor]], the mightiest of the Valar and source of evil, had deceived the Valar into thinking that he had repented of his evil ways. Pardoned and residing in Valinor, he undertook to corrupt the Noldor and succeeded in making them instruments of his malice, particularly Fëanor. But Fëanor greatly mistrusted Melkor, which was part of Melkor's plan.

[[Image:Antti Autio - The Threat of Feanor.jpg|thumb|left|350px|''Fëanor's threat'' by [[Antti Autio]]]]

In the greatest of his achievements, Fëanor captured the light of the [[Two Trees]] to make the three Silmarils, also called the Great Jewels. He prized the Silmarils above all else, and grew increasingly suspicious that the Valar and other Eldar coveted them. He either vainly displayed the jewels or jealously guarded them from all except his immediate family.

===Feud with Fingolfin===
Melkor greatly desired the Silmarils and his hatred for Fëanor grew, but the Valar still did not know of Melkor's true intentions. Melkor played upon Fëanor's temperament and pride to convince him that his own half-brother Fingolfin was not only planning to usurp his place as heir to Finwë, but also seize the jewels for himself. Fëanor's hostility grew to the point to where he threatened Fingolfin's life. (It was at this time that the Noldor first began to forge weapons.) For this, the Valar exiled him to Formenos. He took a substantial treasure with him, including the Silmarils, which he put in a locked box. In a show of support for his eldest son, Finwë withdrew to Formenos.

The Valar realized that Melkor was behind Fëanor's actions. They sent [[Tulkas]] to imprison him again, but he could not be found. Melkor was not seen for a long time, until he unexpectedly showed up at Formenos. Since with Finwë and Fëanor's absence Fingolfin had become king, it seemed that Melkor's lies were true. Melkor tried again to convince Fëanor of them, but he erred, and Fëanor realized that Melkor's true goal was to obtain the Silmarils. He shut the door in Melkor's face. In a rage, Melkor left. When the Valar heard of the incident, they started the hunt up again. But it was apparent that Melkor had fled from Valinor. He feigned to go north, but then turned south.

===Theft of the Silmarils===
After a time the Valar sought to mend the breach between Fëanor and Fingolfin, and invited them to Valinor to make peace. Fingolfin offered a hand to his half-brother, recognizing Fëanor's place as the eldest, which he grudgingly accepted.

Meanwhile, Melkor stole away to [[Avathar]] in the south of Aman to seek out the evil, spider-like creature [[Ungoliant]]. Ungoliant helped Morgoth destroy the Two Trees, bringing darkness to Valinor. Morgoth and Ungoliant then went to Formenos, slew Finwë, and took all the gems there, including the Silmarils. They escaped by crossing the [[Helcaraxë]], or Grinding Ice, in the north to [[Beleriand]] in Middle-earth.

It was during the festivities where Fëanor and Fingolfin were being reconciled that the Trees were destroyed. The Valar knew that now the light of the Trees survived only in the Silmarils and [[Yavanna]] asked Fëanor to give them up so that they could restore the Trees. Fëanor emphatically stated that he would not give up his Silmarils of his own free will; if the Valar forced him, he said, they would be no better than Melkor. It was after this that the messenger came telling of the raid at Formenos.

According to the messenger, Melkor, surrounded by an impenetrable black fog, had come to Fëanor's vault in Formenos. Finwë the High King fought and lost against Melkor, and was the first elf to be slain in Valinor. Melkor ransacked the vault, taking many valuable jewels. Most notably, he was responsible for the thievery of the Silmarils.

===The Kinslaying===
[[Image:Tuuliky - Feanor.jpg|thumb|250px|left|''Fëanor'' by Tuuliky]]The Valar and Eldar now fully understood the extent of Melkor's treachery. Fëanor, upon learning of his father's murder and the theft of his prized Silmarils, named Melkor "Morgoth", or "Black Enemy". Now King of the Noldor, Fëanor delivered the most impassioned speech ever given in Arda, which he unwittingly filled with Morgoth's taint. He railed against the Dark Lord, but because of Morgoth's influence, he also blamed the Valar for Morgoth's deeds. He persuaded most his people that because the Valar had abandoned them, the Noldor must follow him to Middle-earth and fight the Dark Lord. Fëanor then swore the terrible [[Oath of Fëanor]] which all seven of his sons also proclaimed, vowing to fight anyone and everyone—whether Elf, Man, Maia, or Vala—who withheld the Silmarils, and invoking even [[Ilúvatar]] as a witness. This Oath led to much conflict and later caused great tragedy among his seven sons.

Seeking a way to get to Middle-earth, he went to the shores of Aman, where the seafaring [[Teleri]] lived, and demanded the use of their ships. When Teleri refused to give or lend their ships, Fëanor ordered the Noldor to take the ships. The Teleri resisted, and a battle broke out, in which many of them were slain.

In repentance of this act, Finarfin, Finwë's third son, took his host and turned back. They were accepted by the Valar, and Finarfin ruled as High-King of the Noldor in Valinor.

===Exile in Middle-earth===
There were not enough ships to carry all of the Noldor across the sea, so Fëanor and his sons led the first group. Upon arriving at Losgar, in the land of Lammoth, in the far west of Beleriand, where Morgoth and Ungoliant had passed not long before, they decided to burn the ships and leave the followers of Fingolfin behind. However, Fëanor accidentally left his son Amras in the ships, and he was burned alive{{ref|nameSons}}. The earth being flat in those days, the remaining Noldor saw the flames, and perceived that if they were to go to Middle-earth, they had no choice but to cross the Helcaraxë. This they did under the leadership of Fingolfin, and suffered great losses along the way, which greatly added to the animosity they had for Fëanor and his sons. [[Image:Carlo_Pagulayan_-_Feanor_and_Gothmog.jpg|thumb|right|250px|''Fëanor and Gothmog'' by Carlo Pagulayan]]

Learning of the Noldor's arrival, Morgoth summoned his armies from his fortress of [[Angband]] and attacked Fëanor's encampment in [[Mithrim]]. This battle was called the [[Dagor-nuin-Giliath]] ("Battle under the Stars"), for the Sun and Moon had not yet been made. The Noldor managed to win the battle and disperse Morgoth's armies. Fëanor, still in a great rage, pressed on toward Angband with his sons. He came even within sight of Angband, but was ambushed by a force of [[Balrogs]], with few elves about him. He fought mightily, hewing even after receiving several wounds from [[Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs]].

His sons came upon the balrogs with great force of elves, and were able to drive them off. However, as Fëanor was being carried off the battlefield, he knew his wounds were fatal. He cursed Angband thrice, but with the eyes of death, he knew that his elves, unaided, would never throw down the dark towers. At the moment of his death the passing of his fiery spirit reduced his body to ashes.

His sons were still bound by the Oath to recover the Silmarils, which would determine the events of Middle-earth during the First Age.
== Etymology ==
Fëanor's [[father-name]] was ''[[Curufinwë]]''', "Skillful Finwë", by adding ''[[curu]]'', the [[Quenya]] noun for "skill", to his father's name . He later gave his favorite son [[Curufin]] the same father-name. His [[Amilessë|mother-name]] was ''[[Fëanáro]]'', which translates as "Spirit of Fire", being formed by adding ''[[fëa]]'', a Quenya noun for "spirit" and ''[[Nár (Quenya)|nár]]'', "flame". Apparently, the masculine ending ''[[-o]]'' is also present. The name Fëanor is the [[Sindarin]] version of his mother-name.
'''Helm Hammerhand''' ([[Third Age 2691]] – [[Third Age 2759]], aged 68 years) was the ninth [[King of Rohan]] and last King of the first line.

==History==

Helm became King at the death of his father [[Gram]], during a time of crisis. His father had already fought open warfare with the [[Dunlendings]], who operated from the captured fortress of [[Isengard]].

Later in his reign a man named [[Freca]] appeared, a Dunlending with Rohirric blood. Freca held lands at either side of the river [[Adorn]], the border of Rohan, and claimed to be a descendant of King [[Fréawine]] of Rohan. He planned to let his son, [[Wulf]], marry the daughter of Helm. Freca marched to [[Edoras]] with a great force of men, planning to threaten the King to comply with his demands, but Helm Hammerhand smote him with his fist. Enraged, the men of Freca left Edoras, returning with a great force of Dunlendings. Under the leadership of Wulf they overran Rohan, but Helm withdrew in the [[Hornburg|Suthburg]], and there endured a long siege.

The Suthburg held a large war-horn, and whenever it was blown Helm would break through the Dunlending ranks, slaying many of their men. It is believed that many of the men he killed he did so with his bare hands. This led to a belief under the Dunlendings that the wraith of Helm Hammerhand still wandered through Rohan, and defended the keep that would be renamed the Hornburg. However, at the end of the war Helm Hammerhand and his sons [[Haleth son of Helm|Haleth]] and [[Háma son of Helm|Hama]] were slain. Once Helm died, his body was discovered frozen in the snow still standing, his eyes open, ready to fight.

He was succeeded by his nephew [[Fréaláf Hildeson]], who defeated the Dunlendings.
==Etymology==
Helm in [[Old English]] means "protection".
:As part of the decorations of the [[Hornburg]], two statues were erected. One was destroyed beyond recognition, but the other was one of Helm. The warrior holds a hammer in his hand.
'''Grimbold''' was a Rider of [[Rohan]], who dwelt in [[Grimslade]]. He fought at both of the [[Battles of the Fords of Isen]]. He rode to [[Minas Tirith]], and was slain in the [[Battle of the Pelennor Fields]]. He was described in the ''[[Song of the Mounds of Mundburg]]'' as "doughty".

==Portrayal in adaptations==
Grimbold is briefly glimpsed twice in [[Peter Jackson]]'s [[Peter_Jackson%27s_The_Return_of_the_King|Return of the King]]. The first time is as [[Theoden]] arrives at Dunharrow and calls out to Grimbold. In this scene he appears as an elderly man in the armour of the guard of Edoras. Later on in the film as the rohirrim arrive at the [[Pelennor Fields]] Theoden gives Grimbold orders and tells him to go 'Forth and fear not darkness!' Grimbold rides past now wearing his helmet. In these scenes he was played by [[Bruce Phillips]].

The eleventh [[King of Rohan]] was [[Brytta Léofa|Brytta]], the son of [[Helm Hammerhand]]'s nephew [[Fréaláf Hildeson]]. Though his kingdom had recovered from the desperate times his predecessors had known, [[Rohan]] was still a troubled land when Brytta came to the throne. He gave what help he could to his people, and fought to protect them from the waves of Orcs that descended on the land during his time as King.

This King's legendary generosity was prefigured in his name: Brytta is [[Old English]] for one who dispenses help or charity. In gratitude for his aid and service, though, his people gave him another name: Léofa, 'the beloved', and this title was preserved in the traditions of Rohan long after Brytta's death.
== Why Glamdring's fate inconceivable? ==

I notice that the article as it is notes that It is "inconceivable" that Gandalf did not take Glamdring with him back to Valinor, citing Shadowfax's fate as a reason for this. What i wonder is what the connection is? Both are posessions of Gandalf yes, but one is a gentle creature, the prince of horses and the other is a tool for butchery. Considering that Feanor's forging of weapons was one of the first signs of trouble afoot, I would have thought it is at least as conceivable that Gandalf left Glamdring in the care of the elves or even the race of men before taking the ship. Just as Faramir doesnt love the sword for it's sharpness, the people of Valinor probably wouldnt love the sword at all! So this rather long-winded discussion boils down to my beleif that there is some inherent bias in that line and it should be changed to something without such weasel words. Objections? == Canonicity ==

I question how canon the facts in this article are. It seems to use Weapons and Warfare as its primary source which is problematic as that particular book has no basis in Tolkien's written material- it is simply a piece of merchandise for the films. I think it would be wrong to present any information from it, unless explicitly supported in Tolkien's own texts in articles on this encyclopedia. It would be the equivilent of writing articles based on David Day's books. Since it is also used as a source in many of your other articles Theoden1, i think the same rule applies. [[User:Dr Death|Dr Death]] 18:08, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

:Agreed, all the references need to be to the original source. It might be worthwhile to include a section in the [[The Lord of the Rings: Weapons and Warfare|book's article]] listing all of the statements which were made up so others don't make the same mistake. It's probably not worth our time to list all of the [[David Day]] [[fanon]]. --[[User:Hyarion|Hyarion]] 18:18, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

::More purist opinion, I see. I consider LOTR:WaW to be a highly useful secondary source, and while it may dominate the section on weapons, it won't dominate the whole article. So keep your fur on, guys. This is long way from fanon, and I'm sure author Chris Smith would be rightfully offended. A vast library and a vast amount of study would be required to come up with these few facts from primary sources-- anybody got that kind of time? --{{User:Theoden1/sig}} 18:29, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

:::It's purists? I think it's just embedded in my head from all those lost points on English essays from not citing the primary source when I could have :p. While I don't have the book myself, I'm sure it is a great source, [http://www.monstersandcritics.com/books/reviews/article_71.php/The_Lord_of_the_Rings_Weapons_and_Warfare_Review this review] cites some of the issues with trying to merge canon and non-canon material. However even if everything was 100% accurate we still shouldn't be citing it, we should be citing the original source. Just like someone writing an essay on Gondorian Military Forces shouldn't be citing Tolkien Gateway, they should be citing the original sources we compiled the information from, and they can't do that if we can't provide them. That being said, a secondary source is still better than no source. Citing everything is like perfect spelling, it won't happen but it's still a good idea to try. --[[User:Hyarion|Hyarion]] 19:03, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

:::I wouldnt regard it as purism. And i wouldnt call works by other authors 'secondary sources' since the events they're supposedly reporting on are fictional- Tolkien's meta-fictional mythology about the Red Book and how it's all supposed to come from that is all well and good but in the real world he was the creator rather than a 'primary source' on events that happened independant of anything written about them. To be honest i dont know why i'm going into such depth about something that should be quite plainly obvious. Lets put it this way- how is WaW any different from fanfiction? In fact lets touch a nerve here and say Slash fanfiction. Both are extrepolations from the source material covering subjects otherwise scarcely (if at all) reported in the original work. Now within the reader's own mind they can construct whatever vision of the mythology they see fit and WaW or 'Legolas and Glorfindel get it on' are designed to stir the imagination in directions that appeal to different kinds of people, but even though war does have considerably more detail bestowed by Tolkien than sexual relations, as soon as you start to extrepolate, both as are uncanon as the next. And as an encyclopedia of Tolkien's work rather than derivative authors i think we should stick to what's written by him, and interpretations rather than inventions on his work. As a final point, you ask who has the time to look up these facts in their original sources, well i can tell you if you're doing this kind of work you have to find the time- there's no easy way out. As a bit of a pet project i actually went searching for every reference in Tolkien of the physical appearance of characters, objects and locations from the First Age and it was remarkably good fun! We seem to have quite a few articles which are claimed and have not been edited recently. As the claimed template may discourage other editors from contributing to the article I think it may be a good idea to say if the claimed editor hasn't made any edits to the article for X days, then we should release the article and remove the template. Otherwise I think, at least for myself, it would be easy to claim articles and forget about them. --[[User:Hyarion|Hyarion]] 21:52, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
:As someone who has claimed a few, I think 30 days is about right.--{{User:Theoden1/sig}} 02:13, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

::The topic was kind of pointed in your direction :) Hm, I was thinking quite a bit less than 30 days. I try not to do any editing on an article if someone has it claimed, so the article is essentially locked from editing by anyone else. Especially since we have no limit on the number of articles someone can 'lock' at any one time. Rewriting a small article hopefully shouldn't take a month, and large articles are usually rewritten section by section. We certainly don't want someone claiming articles like [[Gandalf]] or [[Aragorn II]] for an entire month. I'd imagine a couple days is probably going to be normal, so maybe give the editor a week before the template is removed, and for popular articles we can make it less on a case-by-case basis. It also makes sense to limit, at least politely, the number of articles an editor can claim, if it takes them a month to rewrite a dozen articles, maybe they could just claim one for a couple days, finish it and remove the template, then move onto the next article, as they most likely aren't working on all the articles simultaneously. That's just my opinion though. Hopefully one of these days we can get an extension which shows if someone has clicked 'Edit' and has yet to save the article to prevent conflicts. --[[User:Hyarion|Hyarion]] 04:45, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

::: I'm with Hyarion on this one. To be honest i question the wisdom of 'claiming' articles in the first place. I think it creates far more of a sense of posession than is wise for a project such as this which ultimately is not meant to be carved up into the pet projects of individuals, each furnishing their little empire with their own biases. All this is a bit of an evocative way of saying that i would argue that the nature of this template be changed to 'ongoing work' or 'work in progress' and i would support Hyarion's suggestion of a time limit- a week should be long enough for even the biggest articles. I would perhaps even limit the number of articles one could be working on at any given time- 5 maximum. Unfortunately this is the fatal flaw of the wiki system: that a supreme act of altruism should be made in waiving all claims to posession of individual works and trusting to the survival of your particular edit not to the amount of time or effort you put into it but to the quality and suitability of the work you have done.
The '''Wraith-world''' was a mysterious alternative aspect of reality, into which the [[One Ring|Ring]] could partly draw its wearer. Certain beings, such as the [[Ringwraiths]], seem to have led a dual existence on the boundary between two worlds: our own world and the Wraith-world. While they had a partial form in our reality, they seem to have had a more solid existence in their own world. They also had the ability to draw others into their reality, and attempted this with [[Frodo Baggins|Frodo]] through the use of an enchanted weapon. This power to draw others into their realm seems to have been used to terrorise their servants, too - 'they skin the body off you as soon as look at you, and leave you all cold in the dark on the other side', says [[Gorbag]] in [[The Two Towers]] IV 10.

The Wraith-world was not populated by wraiths and [[Ring-bearers]] alone: the [[Elves]] existed in a brilliant, shining form on the other side of the threshold. At least, Frodo saw [[Glorfindel]] in this form while on the brink of the Wraith-world himself, and [[Gandalf]] later suggested that this nature was common to the [[High Elves]].

Though [[Tolkien]] goes into very little detail about this 'other side' to reality, it is mentioned often in accounts that have come down to our own time through folklore. In these stories, it is commonplace to find fairies and elves - and less friendly beings - moving between our world and their own mysterious realm. Indeed, these stories are, in part, the origin of the idea of 'fairyland', and it seems plausible that Tolkien's idea of the ghostly Wraith-world is in some way related to them. In the end, though, he gives us so little information that it is hard to do more than speculate the subject.
What i wonder is is this the way we wish to go with all articles in the wiki with the greatnumber of quotes (which does increase credibility) or should we focus on more 'connective tissue' citing our sources at the end? Personally i find the constant interruption to the page with quotes make the page quite difficult to focus on but they none the less do grant the page the kind of credibility i mentioned above. While you may think that one line in a book is enough to base an argument on i assure you it is not and i think as Hyarion says the issue does need to be addressed since there is so much said and written about it. I myself would not call Tolkien a racist by the standards of the time, however to modern readers his views may be considered that way and so as a reliable and open source of Tolkien knowledge we should be willing to face those accusations and provide the facts of the issue allowing the readers to make up their own minds. No need to be rude and confrontational about it and cast aspersions on my (i think you'll agree)excellent knowledge of the subject. I myself would not call Tolkien a racist by the standards of the time, however to modern readers his views may be considered that way and so as a reliable and open source of Tolkien knowledge we should be willing to face those accusations and provide the facts of the issue allowing the readers to make up their own minds. No need to be rude and confrontational about it and impinge on my (i think you'll agree)excellent knowledge of the subject.
This page simply can't remain as it is - it is based largely on opinion and is often just plain incorrect (such as references to allegory and orcs being dark-skinned). What should be done? Should there be a deletion, or should the evidence for both sides be presented in a less opinionated manner? --[[User:Narfil Palùrfalas|Narfil Palùrfalas]] 20:49, 15 April 2008 (EDT)
:Agree This is load of crap that Tolkien himself addressed racism in his letters, and said that he wasn't and that the idea was ludicrous. DELETE IT! --[[User:Dwarf Lord|Dwarf Lord]] 21:30, 15 April 2008 (EDT)

::I say: don't delete it. We could improve it as a refutation (rename as "Perceived Racism in Tolkien's Works" or something); it is clear that Hippy never read the letters. There are, on various spots on the net, refutations ([http://tolkien.slimy.com/faq/External.html#Racist this one] for example, or [http://imdb.com/name/nm0866058/board/nest/4761136 this] could be used to "harvest" stuff for the article). As we are an Encyclopedia that covers more than just the text-internal elements, ignoring perceived racism would be bad form. The problem with books is, kinda like feminist book reports (nothing personal), that if you want a book to have a certain bias, you will obviously "find" "clear evidence" through cherry picking of that bias, blatantly ignoring anything that does not match your already fixed conclusion. It's called confirmation bias, the bane of reason. -- [[User:Ederchil|Ederchil]] 03:27, 16 April 2008 (EDT)
::PS Speaking of feminism, should we have a "perceived anti-feminism in Tolkien's works" too?
::Edit: [http://www.tolkiengesellschaft.de/v4/alleszutolkien/news/news20030103.shtml This] has some useful sources on extreme right use!

::: I dont think this page should be deleted because it brings up some interesting issues and to ignore them would be to cover up a potentially less desirable angle on Tolkien's works. To ignore it would be to foist modern political trend onto a work that is, from a certain angle fundamentally racist. I agree with Ederchil that it should however be presented as a balanced argument with no real conclusion one way or another.
'''Eorl the Young''' ([[Third Age]] 2485 – 2545, aged 60 years) was the son of [[Léod]] of the [[Éothéod]], and founder of [[Rohan]].

Eorl was known as "the Young" because he became [[Lord of the Éothéod]] at the age of 16. His father [[Leod]] was killed while trying to tame [[Felarof]].

In [[Third Age 2510|T.A. 2510]], [[Borondir|Borondir Udalraph]] came to the north seeking aid, as the [[South-kingdom]] was attacked by the [[Orcs]] and the [[Balchoth]]. On April 15th, Eorl came to the [[Field of Celebrant]], and joined the [[Battle of the Field of Celebrant|battle]]. For his service to [[Gondor]], he was granted [[Calenardhon]] to dwell in. As a return, Eorl and his descendants would have to come to the aid of Gondor when they requested; this was known as the [[Oath of Eorl]]. This would be answered at least twice: once by [[Folcred]] and [[Fastred, son of Folcwine|Fastred]], and once by [[Théoden|Théoden Ednew]].

Eorl died in battle against the [[Easterlings]] in T.A. 2545.

==Etymology==
'''Eorl''' is an Old English word that can be roughly translated as "one of the nobility, earl". It was the highest of the ranks in North Germanic culture, not introduced to Britain until the late 9th century. The title was known as ''jarl'' in Old Norse, and because of that, the Icelandic translation of uses this throughout (along with [[Helm Hammerhand|Hjálmur]], [[Thengel|Þengill]], [[Théoden|Þjódan]] and [[Éomer|Jómar]]).

Compare ''[[Ceorl]]'', the second rank.
If you want to see if it looks right, instead of saving the page, you can simply click "Show preview", which will show you a preview of the page without saving it. ==Adding Templates==

I thought you should know that if you want to add a template, you only need to put <nowiki>{{templatename}}</nowiki>, depending on the template. I thought originally that, like you, you had to copy the entire template and put it on the page, but that is not so. For the speedy deletion template, all you need to add to the top of the page is <nowiki>{{delete}}</nowiki>. There are some differences for such templates as the quote and infobox ones, but we can explain those if you ever need to use them. --[[User:Narfil Palùrfalas|Narfil Palùrfalas]] 12:48, 13 June 2007 (EDT)
Hello Dr Death, could you just hold off on changing articles to redirects until the discussion has made a final decision, that way we don't end up have to undo everything. Thanks! --[[User:Hyarion|Hyarion]] 13:39, 13 June 2007 (EDT)

:Yeah sorry about this, and thanks for your courteousy when my impulsive behaviour perhaps warrents something a little harsher. I do however make sure that all the information included on a page i intend to redirect is already (or if not i will place it) on the page intended to redirect to.

::Ah don't worry about it. Even I realized some of those may be better off as redirects, but just to be safe it is probably easier to convert it to a redirect later on than to find redirects that need to be turned into articles. Thanks for all your help and for putting up with me :) --[[User:Hyarion|Hyarion]] 13:48, 13 June 2007 (EDT)
