'''Atanatar II''' ([[Third Age]] 977 – 1226, aged 249 years) succeeded his father [[Hyarmendacil I]] in Third Age 1149 was the sixteenth King of [[Gondor]]. He was known as '''Atanatar II Alcarin''' (''Alcarin'' means "Glorious"), for [[Gondor]] enjoyed its greatest wealth and power under him.

His wealth was so great that historians remarked that "precious stones are pebbles in [[Gondor]] for children to play with."

The deeds of Atanatar were not as "glorious" as his nickname would indicate. He made no effort to expand or maintain the power of his father and the guard on [[Mordor]] was neglected. Therefore his reign is seen as the start of [[Gondor]]'s decline before the [[War of the Ring]].

He was succeeded by his son [[Narmacil I]] in 1226.
