The Brown Lands (S. Berennyn) was a region east of the Anduin between Mirkwood to the north and the Emyn Muil to the south.

The area was the home of the Entwives who made their gardens there; but during the War of the Last Alliance at the end of the Second Age, they were driven away when Sauron ruined the land against the advance of the Allies down the Anduin. Thenceforth the area became a desolate desert. The Ents vainly had crossed the Anduin in search of the Entwives. Treebeard appeared convinced that the Entwives were not all destroyed but were "lost".

Even by the end of the Third Age, when the Fellowship of the Ring drifted by in boats upon the Great River, they saw only long, formless slopes with a withered look, without trees or even grass. What had caused such desolation not even Aragorn could tell.

Etymology
J.R.R. Tolkien describes in his unfinished index (for The Lord of the Rings) the Brown Lands as a 'translation' of Berennyn (containing Sindarin baran 'brown, yellow-brown') "a devastated region, east of Anduin, between Lórien and the Emyn Muil".

__NOTOC__
Sarn Gebir were the Rapids of the Great River Anduin. They appeared as the river's course passed between the Emyn Muil, above the Falls of Rauros. As they were unnavigable rocks and stony eyots, a portage-way was build on the western bank of the river, facilitating light boats from Wilderland to Osgiliath, until the Orcs of Mordor began to multiply.

While the Fellowship of the Ring navigated the Anduin, Aragorn was preparing for the Rapids, but they reached them sooner than he reckoned, on midnight of 23 February. The stream pulled them towards the eastern bank, where they were ambushed by Orc archers from Mordor. The Fellowship paddled away from the rapids. During the next day they portaged a few miles to the foot of the rapids and resumed their paddling on the morning of 25 February.

Etymology
Sarn Gebir is a Sindarin name meaning "stone-spiked".

Other versions of the Legendarium
In early manuscripts, Sarn Gebir was a name for the highlands which would later be named Emyn Muil.

Portrayal in adaptations
2001: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring:
:The ambush at the rapids of Sarn Gebir scene was actually intended to be in this film, to the point that an entire on-location set was built, but was not included in the final cut for one simple reason: before filming could begin on the set, record-breaking torrential rains and 20 foot high floodwaters washed away the entire set. So complete was the destruction that not even any wreckage of the set was ever found. Without the time or funding to construct a new set, the scene had to be cut from the script.
The Black Gate of Mordor (Sindarin: Morannon) was originally a gate built by Sauron, the Dark Lord of Mordor, to prevent invasion through the Pass of Cirith Gorgor, the gap between the Ered Lithui and the Ephel Duath. It was probably built with the power of the One Ring, like the Barad-dûr. After Sauron's fall, it became a Númenorean garrison. Backed up on the other side by the Isenmouthe, and protected by the castle of Durthang to the west, it was redesigned to keep all of Mordor's evil inside, shielding the outside from it - and it from the outside. The reconstruction of Minas Ithil, Tower of the Rising Moon, as well as the construction of Cirith Ungol were also done for the same purpose.

However, during the aftermath of the Kin-strife in Gondor the watchfulness of the guards in these strongholds relaxed. Thus the Ringwraiths and Orcs re-entered Mordor, eventually overrunning the garrisons and inhabiting them for themselves. It was at this time that the tower of Minas Ithil was taken by the Nazgul, having its name changed to Minas Morgul, Tower of Sorcery.

During the War of the Ring, the Army of the West, numbering some 7,000 men, arrived at the Black Gate with the intention of drawing the Eye of Sauron away from Mount Doom, to allow Frodo the Ringbearer to cast the One Ring into the Crack of Doom within it. This they achieved, and the Ring was destroyed in the fires of Mount Doom, following which the Black Gate and the Towers of Teeth immediately collapsed.
Does ANYONE know when the Morannon was built? Or by whom? It's clear to me that due to its description it is not of dúnedainic origin but built by Sauron. I cannot find a single evidence for this, only suggestions: The gate for sure was built before Sauron returned to Mordor in the Third Age, but was it already there during the Last Alliance?
Also the year of its construction is completely unknown for me.
"Early Third Age", as given in the article is surely wrong, if it was built by Sauron. At least it does contradict the statement that it might be built with the power of the Ring. --Thalion 13:18, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

Forget it, stumbled over a short note in "Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age" that Sauron's host awaited the Last Alliance in front of the Black Gate. --Thalion 13:58, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

Shouldn't this page include the Towers of the Teeth (Carchost and Narchost)? Even Durthang is named, which was probably built to guard Udun and Isenmouthe, so it's odd to say the least that the Towers don't get a mention. --Gigoachef 17:49, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

::Indeed it is speculation, as it was immediately clear from my use of the adverb 'possibly'. So, since all the other known passes are south of Rivendell, the corollary is the existence of an insofar unnamed fourth pass somewhere between the High Pass and Mount Gundabad. :::Well I didn't propose the exact wording but I suggested an example for the syntax so as not to seem like the article jumps to non-canonical conclusions. Actually I think that if you simply mention that the Fallohides crossed that point without mentioning the existence of a pass, would be safe enough IMHO. --Sage 22:35, 10 November 2012 (UTC)

:After the Council of Elrond, scouts were sent out to determine where the Black Riders were and if any had survived the flood at the Ford of Bruinen. They went in various directions and "others had climbed the pass at the source of the Gladden River, and had come down into Wilderland and over the Gladden Fields and so at length had reached the old home of Radagast at Rhosgobel." This pass was not named and seems to not have been considered by the Fellowship as they hiked south. It is in The Fellowship of the Ring, in Book II, Chapter 3 "The Ring Goes South", near the beginning of the chapter (p. 287 in the hardcover Houghton Mifflin Co. edition). --Gamling 22:34, 10 November 2012 (UTC)
They ran 795 miles (1,280 kilometers) from Mount Gundabad in the far north to Methedras in the south. Some of the peaks may have been as high as 12,000 feet (3,660 meters).

Geographic Features
The most important peaks were Mount Gundabad, Redhorn, Silvertine, Cloudyhead, and Methedras.

Important Peaks
The northernmost peak of the Misty Mountains was Mount Gundabad, where according to legend Durin, eldest of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves, awoke. Later it became a haven for Orcs.

The greatest Dwarven realm in Middle-Earth, Khazad-dûm, was located at the midpoint of the Misty Mountains. The city was built under three peaks, Redhorn (Caradhras in Sindarin), Silvertine (Celebdil), and Cloudyhead (Fanuidhol). Inside Silvertine the Dwarves built the Endless Stair, a stairway from the foundations of the mountain to its peak. The southernmost mountain was Methedras (Sindarin for "Last Peak").

Passes over the Misty Mountains
The most important passes were the High Pass and the Redhorn Pass, but there was also a pass at the source of the Gladden River and, possibly, another one near the headwaters of the Mitheithel.

Routes around the Misty Mountains
The Gap of Rohan was a passable valley between the southernmost peak of the Misty Mountains and the northernmost of the White Mountains. In the far north the Misty Mountains formed a T with the Grey Mountains, preventing a northern route around them.

History
Origins
The Misty Mountains were created by the Vala Melkor during the Years of the Trees as a hindrance for Oromë, who would hunt his fell creatures. They would later serve as a deterrent for the Elves during the Great Journey, causing some to turn south. The Elves that would not cross the Misty Mountains would become the Nandor.

Inhabitants
Dwarves, Orcs, Elves, Men, Hobbits, Eagles, and Ents all lived beneath or alongside the Misty Mountains.

Dwarves
The great Dwarven city of Khazad-dûm (later called the "Black Pit" of Moria) was located near the middle of the mountain chain. There Durin's folk lived for thousands of years with a kingdom which spread as far as Gundabad and as far east as the Iron Hills. Until the awakening of Durin's Bane, which drove the Dwarves from their city. It also seems that some Dwarves either before or after the War of the Dwarves and Orcs, dwelt on the eastern side of the mountains near Goblin-town.

When the Dwarves were strong, the mountains were generally free of Orcs, but when the Shadow was strong, Orcs bred in Mount Gundabad, in Goblin-town (where Bilbo Baggins found the One Ring), later in Moria itself, and everywhere in between.

Elves
The Elven enclave of Rivendell, the home of Elrond, was built in the western foothills beneath High Pass. On the eastern side of the mountains, near the source of the Silverlode river, lay the Kingdom of Lorien under the rule of Lord Celeborn and Lady Galadriel. While Elves guarded both sides of the Misty Mountains, few ever crossed them.

Men
The land east of the Misty Mountains and south of the Grey Mountains was the ancestral home of the Éothéod, the forefathers of the Rohirrim. Their capital was Framsburg.

Wraiths
In the Third Age the Witch-king built the Kingdom of Angmar in the western lands between the Misty Mountains and the Mountains of Angmar. The evil country was peopled by fallen Men, Orcs, and other creatures of Sauron. Its capital was Carn Dûm. At the southern tip of the Misty Mountains, beneath Methedras, was Isengard, which was originally a Gondorian fortress but was later given to Saruman. In the Third Age the south lands were protected by Rohan.

Hobbits
Hobbits lived for untold years along the foothills of the Misty Mountains near the Vales of Anduin. Around 1050, the Hobbit group known as the Harfoots migrated west across the Misty Mountains, fleeing the ever more numerous Men and the Shadow growing in Mirkwood. Later the other two groups of Hobbits, the Stoors and Fallohides, migrated west as well, until by 2500 no Hobbits could be found east of the mountains.

Eagles
Near the east exit of Goblin-town the Eagles kept an eyrie to keep watch on the Orcs. Much further south, Ents guarded Fangorn Forest, the last remnant of the great Southern Forest that surrounded the Misty Mountains eons ago.

In the Third Age
Thorin and Company used the High Pass to cross the Misty Mountains, and were captured by the Orcs of Goblin-town.

Later the Fellowship of the Ring tried to cross Redhorn Pass, after choosing not to use the High Pass or the Gap of Rohan because of the threat of Orcs patrols or Saruman's forces. A powerful blizzard blocked the Redhorn Pass, forcing the Fellowship to journey through Moria. There they faced the Balrog that ruled the mines. Gandalf slew the Balrog by throwing it from the Silvertine, but sacrificied his own life in doing so.
:Misty Mountains appear as both a major game region and within other game areas. The region of "Misty Mountains" consists of the part of the mountain range adjacent to Rivendell Valley, including both High Pass and Goblin-town. The mountain range in a broader sense can also be accessed from other in-game regions, including the pass Caradhras in Eregion, former settlement of Dwarves under Thror in eastern Enedwaith, a village on the slopes of mount Methedras in Dunland, the cliffs of Zirakzigil in Moria and the eastern slopes of the Mountains in Lothlorien.

"Misty Mountains" Outside of Tolkien
* Led Zeppelin recorded a song, "Misty Mountain Hop", which seems to have borrowed the name but little else from Tolkien. Several other Led Zeppelin songs contain Tolkien references.
* Robert Jordan's fantasy series The Wheel of Time also features a mountain range called the Mountains of Mist.
