I noticed that my attempt to create a reference was messed up. So I got rid of my failed attempt at a reference and tried inserting the information directly, but in smaller than normal type. That caused spacing issues. So I have settled with superscripting the information on the same line. If you want the information formatted differently, change it as you will.

::Indeed. You're reading it too literally: if Tolkien were referring to an actual eye he wouldn't have capitalised it; also, eyes don't "pierce". This is eye in the sense of being able to see/notice/perceive, rather than the actual organ.
