James D. Allan (Jim Allan; b. 1945) published books and articles on Tolkien in the 1970s, primarily on linguistics. His An Introduction to Elvish was the first book-length publication on Tolkien's invented languages. His surname is sometimes wrongly printed as Allen with an e.

In the late 70s Jim was moderator of the Toronto branch of the Mythopoeic Society which in the early 80s became the Fantasy, Folklore, and Mythology Discussion Group, not particularly connected with Tolkien.

Jim was editor of Mythprint (with Elliott Grassett, Karen Pearlston, and Dorothy Tate) in part of 1975/1976 and the same group served as data production editors on Mythlore 12, Mythlore 13, Mythlore 14, and Mythlore 15 (June, 1976 to March, 1977).

In 1979 Jim was one of the two guests of honour at Mythcon 10.

Since the late 90s Jim has been active on many web forums, usually using the logins Jallan, jallan, Jallanite, or jallanite.

He is currently (2012) an active member of the Wellinghall (Toronto) Smial of The Tolkien Society.
Fanzines note
As the fanzine note stands now, the whole note turns up in the Table of Contents. It's better to have it as normal text under the the heading "Tolkien Fanzines".--Morgan 21:04, 13 February 2014 (UTC)

I noticed that my attempt to create a reference was messed up. So I got rid of my failed attempt at a reference and tried inserting the information directly, but in smaller than normal type. That caused spacing issues. So I have settled with superscripting the information on the same line. If you want the information formatted differently, change it as you will.

Born in Cardiff, Wales, Ready studied bibliography in England and Wales, and after the Second World War he became an acquisitions librarian at Stanford University. Between 1956 to 1963 he was Director of Libraries at Marquette University.

Ready foresaw the cultural value of Tolkien's writings and, while at Marquette University, he managed to purchase a large selection of original literary manuscripts by Tolkien in 1956-57, including manuscripts of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.<ref>[[Douglas A.
According to his own account, Ready had arranged a lecture tour for Tolkien at American universities, but Tolkien was forced to decline because of illness. In order to make amends, Tolkien therefore offered Ready to buy his manuscripts. However, Christina Scull and Wayne G. Hammond have stated (deriving from archived correspondence) that Tolkien "was directly approached to sell his papers, and did not himself suggest their sale."

::Indeed. You're reading it too literally: if Tolkien were referring to an actual eye he wouldn't have capitalised it; also, eyes don't "pierce". This is eye in the sense of being able to see/notice/perceive, rather than the actual organ. Compare with "Eye of Sauron", which also isn't an actual eye, but a metaphor for the endless vigilance of his servants commanded through his ceaseless will. -- 18:24, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

::From Psalm 33:18: Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy;. This Psalm is very popular and this use of the singular eye has long ago worked its way into common Christian symbolism.
