Annúminas was the city of the Kings of Arnor, on the shores of Nenuial.

History
The city was founded by Elendil himself, on the shores of the northern lake Nenuial, near the sources of the Baranduin possibly shortly after the foundation of Arnor. It was the chief city of the Kings of Arnor for several centuries, and home to one of the three palantíri of the North-Kingdom and the Sceptre of Annúminas, the heirloom of and symbol of kingship in Arnor.

History suggests that the city survived for nearly a thousand years . In the early days of Arnor, it must have been one of the glories of Middle-earth. Soon after its founding, though, the numbers of the Dúnedain of the North began to dwindle. The population of Annúminas seems to have fallen throughout its history, until eventually it was deserted, and the Kings moved to Fornost to the east. This must have happened around Third Age 861 with the split of Arnor.

Fate
After the city's desertion, it fell into decay, but two relics of its greatness survived: its palantír and the Sceptre.

The palantír remained for more than a millennium after the loss of its city, but was ultimately drowned with Arvedui in the cold northern seas. The silver Sceptre of Annúminas (which was originally the rod of office of the Númenórean Lords of Andúnië) would have been removed to Fornost by the Kings, and eventually came to be kept by Elrond in Rivendell.

At the time of the coronation of Elessar at the end of the Third Age, Annúminas had lain in ruins for more than two thousand years. Yet Aragorn soon set his mind to preparing a place to stay in the ancient city. Aragorn sometimes came North to his house in Annúminas restored and stayed for a while beside Lake Evendim, then everyone in the Shire was glad. It is not explicitly stated whether Aragorn had begun a complete restoration of the city, or if he had proclaimed Annúminas the capitol of his Northern Kingdom.

Geography
It seems likely that the city was dependent on the River Baranduin for contact with the outside world, while the Hills of Evendim surrounded the city to the west and south the city's people could reach the other cities of the Dúnedain that lay along the river by boat.

The War of the Dwarves and Orcs was a great war fought between the two races.

History
Prelude
The War began when the elderly exiled dwarven King Thrór, after living many years in poverty, wandered with his friend Nár into Moria and was murdered by Azog, the Goblin-chieftain of Moria, in Third Age 2790. But Nár was let go by Azog to tell his people never to come to Moria, and returned to the Blue Mountains.

When Nár returned to the king's son Thráin II, he told him of his father's murder. Thráin sat for seven days without eating or sleeping, until he stood and said "This cannot be borne!".fact Thus began the war.

From 2790 to 2793 the Longbeards responded to this tragedy by gathering their forces, and calling on all the other Houses of the Dwarves for war, but it took them three years to fully gather their strength.

Early Stages
In 2793 they attacked, assailing and sacking one by one all the Orc-holds they could find from Mount Gundabad in the north, to the Gladden Fields in the south.

Little is known about the war, but most of the war was fought underground, in the great mines and tunnels of the Misty Mountains, where Dwarves excelled in combat. The Dwarves were so fierce that for two Mannish generations, Orcs were fleeing towards the White Mountains.

The Final Battle
The war climaxed in 2799, when the final battle was fought in the valley outside the eastern gates of Moria, the Battle of Azanûlbizar. The Dwarves finally won this notoriously bloody encounter when reinforcements arrived late on the scene from the Iron Hills.

After the battle, King Thráin II wanted to enter Moria and reclaim it, but the Dwarves not of Durin's folk refused, saying that the city was not their Fathers' House; they had honoured Thrór's memory by fighting, and this was enough. Dáin Ironfoot also warned Thráin that Durin's Bane still dwelt within Khazad-dûm.

Aftermath and Repercussions
The war was very costly for the Dwarves. Half of those involved in the Battle of Azanulbizar were killed and possibly a couple thousand more were killed throughout the rest of the war. Náin, Frerin, and Fundin were among the more notable casualties. Thráin II himself lost an eye, and Thorin was wounded when his shield broke and he had to use an oak branch to defend himself. This led to his later name Thorin Oakenshield.

During the conflict many many thousands of Orcs fleeing south through Rohan, trying to claim a refuge in the White Mountains beyond, troubled the Rohirrim for two generations.

Other effects of the war were that the Orcs of the Misty Mountains virtually disappeared as a threat for Eriador and Wilderland. One and a half century later the Orcs of the North were beginning to recover, but their population was further reduced during the Battle of Five Armies in Third Age 2941, where Bolg son of Azog tried to avenge his father, and in the process destroying three fourths of them.

It is probable that without this War, the later War of the Ring would have been lost in the north, and the Ring-bearer might never have made it south to Mordor.

Húrin Thalion ("the Steadfast"), was the eldest son of Galdor and Hareth, older brother of Huor, father of Túrin Turambar and Nienor, and Lord of Dor-lómin. Húrin was captured by Morgoth at the Nirnaeth Arnoediad and he and his kin were cursed by the Dark Lord. The curse led to some of the greatest successes and tragedies of the First Age. Tolkien called him the greatest warrior of men in the First Age.

Early Years
The grandson of Hador Lórindol, founder of the House of Hador, was raised with his younger brother Huor in the forest of Brethil. In 458, the brothers joined a war party but were seperated and trapped in the Vale of Sirion. The Vala Ulmo caused a mist to rise and the two escaped into Dimbar. From there, Eagles flew them to the gates of the hidden city Gondolin. King Turgon welcomed the brothers, remembering a prophecy that the children of Hador would aid Gondolin during its darkest hour. They remained with Turgon for a time and, after swearing an oath of secrecy, were returned to Dor-lómin sometime before 462.

Lord of Dor-lómin
In F.A. 462 orcs invaded Hithlum and Galdor was slain defending the wells of Eithel Sirion. Húrin drove off the Orcs and returned to rule Dor-lómin. Two years later he married Morwen Eledhwen of the House of Bëor. Their son Túrin was born shortly thereafter, followed by a daughter, Urwen. Urwen, better known as Lalaith ("Laughter"), died of the plague when she was three.

In F.A. 472, the alliance known as Union of Maedhros led Elves, Dwarves, and Men to assault Morgoth in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad ("The Battle of Unnumbered Tears"). A debacle, High King Fingon and his host were seperated from the other half of the army and Fingon himself was slain by a Balrog. With their liege lord slain and facing a rout, Húrin and Huor convinced King Turgon to withdraw and keep the secret of Gondolin. To defend his escape, the soldiers of Dor-lómin formed a line across the Fen of Serech and were slaughtered by the forces of Morgoth. Huor was slain by an arrow through the eye, but Húrin fought on until he was buried under the weight of bodies of orcs and trolls.

Captured, Húrin was brought before Morgoth and tortured for the secret of Gondolin's location. When he would not break, Morgoth cursed him and all his kin. The Dark Lord then chained Húrin to a chair high on the slopes of Thangorodrim where, through Morgoth's sorcery, he could watch the tragedies that would befall his family.

The Curse of Morgoth
For 28 years, Húrin watched the curse destroy his children. His daughter, Nienor Níniel, was born shortly after his capture and was trapped in the doom of Túrin. Their actions also led to the destruction of Nargothrond, one of the last kingdoms of the Noldor. Now only Gondolin remained.

In 499, after the death of his children, Morgoth freed Húrin. The broken man first returned to Dor-lómin, which was now ruled by Easterlings loyal to Morgoth. Finding none of his kin, he traveled with outlaws to the mountains of Echoriath, searching for the entrance to Gondolin. At first Turgon refused him, but later recanted and sent Eagles to bring him to Gondolin. Húrin had already left for the Forest of Brethil, but Morgoth's curse had already ensnared Gondolin, for the Dark Lord's spies now knew the location of the Hidden Kingdom.

In the Forest of Brethil he found the graves of his children. His wife, Morwen, arrived shortly thereafter, but died at the mound. After burying his wife, Húrin went to the settlement of Ephel Brandir, the home of the People of Haleth, with whom Túrin lived the last years of his life. Angry and grieving, he turned the People of Haleth against one another and ruined Ephel Brandir.

Taking the outlaws with him, Húrin continued on to the ruins of Nargothrond, where he found the Petty-dwarf Mîm. The petty-dwarf had betrayed Túrin years ago and in revenge Húrin slaughtered him. Mîm had claimed the treasure of Nargothrond, and Húrin gathered it to take to Doriath, the last great elvish kingdom.

Húrin was allowed to enter Menegroth, the capital of Doriath, where in anger he threw the treasure before King Thingol and 'thanked' him for aiding his son. This infuriated the outlaws, who tried to take the gold back and were killed by Thingol's guards. Thingol's wife, Melian, finally pierced through Húrin's madness and grief, and shamed by his actions, he left Menegroth a broken man. Húrin left the treasure, however, and the curse of Morgoth would later consume Doriath as well.

Death and Legacy
Around First Age 500, Húrin reached the Great Sea and in despair drowned himself. His life, and the lives of his children would become the Narn i Chîn Húrin ("Lay of the Children of Húrin"), one of the stories in the Unfinished Tales. An abbreviated version is also included in The Silmarillion, entitled "Of Túrin Turambar". Yet another version, the "Wanderings of Húrin", detail the end of Húrin's life. The style, though, is radically different than the other two versions, and so was published separately in The War of the Jewels, volume 11 of The History of Middle-earth series.

Etymology
Húrin is Sindarin for "The Steadfast".

In the Elder Days, the original form of the name was Chúrind (hard initial ch and audible d on the end) and presumably Húrin Thalion was called like that during his lifetime.

Húrin is the later form as it evolved until the Third Age when it was adopted by other individuals who took it as a name; and that is how this ancient name was referred in the Quenta Silmarillion.

Thalion means "Hardened".

Other versions of the legendarium
Silmarillion states that Húrin died at the age of 65. In Grey Annals this was amended to 66, - in accordance with the genealogies in War of the Jewels - but Christopher Tolkien did not adopt the change into the published text.

The Rings of Power or Great Rings were twenty Rings of Power. The Elves of Eregion made nineteen of the Rings of Power (and many other lesser rings) with knowledge obtained from Sauron, and several of them with Sauron aiding the creation. Sauron forged the twentieth Great Ring, called the One Ring or the Ruling Ring, secretly in the fires of Mount Doom.

A verse that summarizes the Great Rings and their ownership is an important part of the lore of Middle-earth. It translates as follows:

<poem style="font-style:italic; margin-left:20px;">Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie
One ring to rule them all, one ring to find them,
One ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.</poem>
The Creation of the Rings of Power
Around Second Age 1200, Sauron started to corrupt the Elves. The Gwaith-i-Mírdain of Eregion were mostly Noldor and wished to have the same joys in Middle-earth as the Elves who had returned to Valinor. Sauron did not manage to approach Gil-galad and Elrond but he had better luck with the Elven-smiths of Eregion to whom he presented under the alias of Annatar, an emissary from the Valar.

The Elves started to make the Rings with knowledge gained from Annatar. The Rings were of various kinds: the lesser rings were only essays in the craft before it was full-grown. In approximately S.A. 1500 the Seven and Nine were created, in Eregion. When Sauron departed, Celebrimbor went on to forge the Three Rings, finishing around S.A. 1590, using the knowledge he had gained from Sauron but without his involvement.

Sauron then created The One Ring around S.A. 1600, alone, in the heart of Mount Doom. Sauron created it to rule over all the other rings, and he put a great part of his power into the One. The Elves, upon creation of the One, heard Sauron speak the spell, and realized they had been betrayed. They defied Sauron and then he attempted to claim the Rings to distribute them to other people; though the Elves fought valiantly in the War of the Elves and Sauron, he took Nine Rings and other lesser works of them; but he could not find the rest. Then Celebrimbor was put to torment, and he revealed about the Seven of them.

Sauron then distributed them to Lords who trusted him, Men who became powerful sorcerers and Kings; and Dwarves who grew greedier and augmented their treasures.

The Twenty Rings
*The Three Rings of the Elves were forged by Celebrimbor alone, and were never touched by Sauron. However, their forging involved some of the arts taught by "Annatar" thus they too were bound to the One Ring to some extent. They were named Narya the Ring of Fire, Nenya the Ring of Water and Vilya the Ring of Air; they remained hidden from Sauron.
*Sauron gave the Seven Rings to the Dwarf-kings, although according to Dwarvish tradition the Elves gave one of them to Durin III. The Dwarves used their Rings to establish their treasure hoards, but Sauron was unable to force the Dwarven bearers to submit. It is believed that the dwarves natural hardiness, and the fact that it was only the more powerful dwarf lords who possessed them, made them resistant to Sauron's control, yet allowed them to accumulate treasure. The final ring to leave the possession of the dwarves occurred when Thráin II was captured.
*The Nine Rings for mortal men were those divided amongst those evil-hearted men who saw their abilities increase, and became sorcerers and Kings among Men. They gained longevity but then faded away to become the Nazgûl, the Ringwraiths, dominated under Sauron's will.
*The One Ring, secretly forged by Sauron in the heart of Mount Doom, had the power to dominate all nineteen other rings. His domain over the other rings was incomplete, but he placed a large amount of his own power into it at its forging; a necessity that later led to his downfall at Frodo Baggins' hands.

The Power Of The Rings
The Rings of Power all had certain abilities, shared amongst them; the only different ones were the three. The chief power of all the rings was the prevention or slowing of decay, the preservation of what is desired or loved. Men (including Hobbits) would see their lifespan increase.

They also enhanced the natural powers of the wearer thus approaching ‘magic’ (a motive easily corrupted into evil) and increased lust for domination. They also shifted the wearer to the Unseen, rendering the material body invisible and making to the wearer able to see the Unseen. Eventually the wearer would fade and eventually turn into a wraith under Sauron's domination..

The Dwarves however were immune to most of those effects, other than they increased their lust for gold which provided occasion for quarrels among themselves. They used their rings to increase their treasure troves; the treasure hoards of these dwarves drew the mightiest of dragons and opponents.

The Three did not do as the other rings. They do not make one invisible (though they themselves can be made so), and their benefits are largely secondary to the main effect the Elves achieved - that of stasis. A wearer of one of the Rings of Three gains the power to heal and preserve, in many different ways, whatever they control. Galadriel's and Elrond's Rings, allowed them to fend off Sauron and protect and preserve Lothlorien and Rivendell. Narya also has the power to inspire hope and courage in those around the bearer.

The One
* Control - Control, over the other rings and in a limited sense the bearers was gained by whomever controlled the power caged inside the One Ring.
* Power - In its forging, to give it the ability of control, it was necessary for Sauron to allow a fatal amount of his power into the One Ring. Any bearer could use this power, though it would take time, determination, skill, and knowledge to do so.
*Invisibility - As is seen many times the One confers invisibility upon the wearer.
*Translation- An ability to understand other creatures.

The Final Disposition of the Rings of Power
Dragons destroyed four of the Seven Rings, and after Sauron's return he recaptured the remaining three (the last from Thráin II). At the end of the War of the Ring, they were presumably buried in the ruins of Barad-dûr.

The Nine he took back from his Ringwraiths, and they were still in his possession at the time of his fall. These, too, probably lie in the ruins of Barad-dûr.

The Three were hidden from him, and their bearers eventually took them to Aman.

The One was destroyed in the Crack of Doom. With its destruction, the remainder of the Seven, the Nine, and the Three Elven rings all became powerless.
Inspiration
The Rings were the background story as fleshed out by Tolkien, out of the Ring that appeared in The Hobbit. The lore of the Rings (especially the One) are often compared to the "Ring of the Nibelungs" although Tolkien denounced any direct inspiration.

Narsil was the sword of King Elendil of the Dúnedain. It was later known as Andúril.

History
The sword was forged during the First Age by the famed Dwarven-smith Telchar. The blade presumably was given to one of the Sons of Fëanor, possibly Curufin, who also held Angrist. It eventually came to Maglor, who likely gave it to Elros.

In the Second Age, Narsil was an heirloom of the descendants of Elros, the first King of Númenor. Although nothing is said of Narsil during this period, it eventually came into the hands of Elendil, a distant descendant, towards the close of the Second Age.

Elendil used Narsil in the Siege of Barad-dûr, but Sauron killed Elendil and the sword broke into two pieces under him as he fell. Elendil's son Isildur took up the sword and used its shard to cut the One Ring from the hand of Sauron. Isildur took the shards home with him. Shortly before Isildur was killed in the second year of the Third Age in the Disaster of the Gladden Fields, the shards were rescued by Ohtar, squire of Isildur's oldest son. He took them to Rivendell, where Isildur's youngest son Valandil was fostered.

The Shards of Narsil were one of the heirlooms of the Kings of Arnor, and after the Northern Kingdom was destroyed they remained an heirloom of the Rangers of the North. It was not reforged until the War of the Ring at the end of the Third Age.

In Third Age 3019 Narsil was reforged in Rivendell as Andúril, the "Flame of the West", for Aragorn, the heir of Isildur. He carried the sword during his journey south as part of the Fellowship of the Ring, and it featured prominently at several points in the story, where it was sometimes referred to as the "Sword That Was Broken" or "The Sword Reforged".

Etymology
Narsil means "Sun and Moon" in Quenya (from Anar = "sun" and Isil = "moon").

The word perhaps represents the Númenorean term of Ûrinîl(uw)at ("two sun-moon"), a collective name for both celestial objects.

Portrayal in Adaptations
2001: Peter Jackson's The Fellowship of the Ring:
:Narsil was not broken in two but in several parts, which were kept at Rivendell, and by Sauron stepping on it instead of it breaking as Elendil fell. The sword is not reforged into Andúril until the third film, when Arwen persuades Elrond to have Elven smiths reforge it from the shards and bring to Aragorn.
<br>In the books, he actually wears the broken blade and shows it to the Hobbits when they meet at the Prancing Pony in Bree, and its reforging prior to the departure of the Fellowship is a decisive move toward kingship.
