Greetings. I am called Aranincë Marcarnildo. This is a Quenya translation of my actual name. In real life, I'm 16 and am facinated by all of the Tolkien family works. My favorite Elf is Fingolfin of the Noldor elves. My favorite human is Eärendil and my favorite Vala is Manwe.

Although I am young, you could say that I've been raised with the Tolkien books. I read them before I watched the Peter Jackson films. You could consider me an avid, younger, reader.

Lionheart: revised spelling errors

A question that has never and can never be fully resolved is the matter of how many Balrogs there are. Please note: this essay will go into the realms of guessing and leave the area of canonized works.

First we look at references in the early works of Tolkien:

“… yet others were creatures of pure flame that writhed like ropes of molten metal . . . upon them rode Balrogs by the hundreds . . . the most dire of all those monsters which Melko devised against Gondolin”

--BoLT2 “The Fall of Gondolin”

“There came wolves and serpents, and there came Balrogs one thousand, and there came Glómund the Father of Dragons.”

--LRoW “Quenta Silmarillion ch. 16 ~15”

As we can see here the original concept of Balrogs made them greater in number but weaker than they currently are. In a note by J.J.R. Tolkien, it is expressed that there should be fewer Balrogs, “at most seven”. A possible reason for this is that if all Balrogs were as powerful as the Moria Balrog was, then the elves would have stood no chance, not when they are coming by the thousands. At the point of his death he had not cut it down to seven, but how many was it cut down to? We will now look at the Canon Silmarillion.

It is stated the valiant and desperate deeds done by elves and Tuor. It also mentions the battle of Ecthelion and Gothmog. It is assumed that by desperate deeds of valour that the killing of the lesser Balrogs is included. This is also added to the battle between Glorfindel and the Balrog on the pinnacle. All told there were at least three, but I would guess as many as five Balrogs, that assaulted the city and died, along with at least five more that were still alive after the battle. It is however possible that only two Balrogs were sent, Gothmog and the slayer of Glorfindel. This would mean two Balrogs were sent and both died. Not very likely of Morgoth to do, he would send a large force so that there would be no chance of escape. At the very least the number of Balrogs sent was five, in my opinion.

Later it says that the Balrogs were destroyed. Pay attention to the plural there. And some few escaped. Again note the use of a few. Now under this reasoning we can assume at least three Balrogs escaped, but probably more like four, five or six. Now the number of Balrogs destroyed was at least five, but more probably seven eight or nine. This would allow for a total of 15 Balrogs in the War of Wrath. More than one Balrog escaped, because it stated that a few Balrogs fled and escaped destruction, so at least two, but most likely three fled. And as the Balrogs were all destroyed, save a few. That implies that those escaping were in the minority, so if three fled, it is logical to assume that six at least were destroyed. The absolute least number of Balrogs at this Battle could have been nine, in my opinion.

The number of Balrogs in the War of Wrath must then be added to the number of Balrogs killed in the Fall of Gondolin. Which is anywhere from three to five. We should not count the Balrogs left alive after the battle as they were involved in the War of Wrath. This brings us to a total of at most twenty Balrogs, a reasonable amount, to as little as thirteen, by my reasoning. The absolute least number of Balrogs in existence would have to be eleven, but this is very unlikely due mostly to the amount of stress placed on the fact that all the Balrogs save a few escapees were destroyed.

Barad-dûr, the Dark Tower, was the chief fortress of Sauron, on the Plateau of Gorgoroth in Mordor. Known in Black Speech as Lugburz, the Eye of Sauron kept watch over Middle-earth from its highest tower.

History
Barad-dûr was built by Sauron with the power of the One Ring during the Second Age. The building took six hundred years to complete; it was the greatest fortress ever built since the Fall of Angband, and much of Sauron's personal power went into it.

Barad-dûr was besieged for seven years by the Last Alliance of Elves and Men, and was leveled after Sauron's defeat at the end of the Second Age, but because it was created using the power of the One Ring its foundations could not be destroyed completely unless the Ring itself should be destroyed. Isildur failed to destroy the Ring, and so its foundations remained. The tower was re-built when Sauron returned to Mordor thousands of years later.

Only when the One Ring was destroyed did the Tower finally fall; without Sauron's power to sustain it, it could not stand. Barad-dûr collapsed to ruin and Sauron was finally defeated.

Appearance
The Dark Tower was described as existing on a massive scale so large it was almost surreal, although Tolkien does not provide much detail beyond its size and immense strength. Since it had a "topmost tower" (the location of the Window of the Eye, from which the Eye of Sauron gazed out over Middle-earth), it presumably had multiple towers. It is otherwise described as dark and surrounded in shadow, so that it could not be clearly seen.

"...wall upon wall, battlement upon battlement, black, immeasurably strong, mountain of iron, gate of steel, tower of adamant... Barad-dûr, fortress of Sauron."
<br>--The Breaking of the Fellowship, The Fellowship of the Ring

Portrayal in adaptations
2001-3: Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings:
In the Lord of the Rings movies by Peter Jackson, Richard Taylor and his design team built a 9 foot high miniature ("big-ature") of Barad-dûr for use in the film. Using the size scale for the model implemented for the films, the Dark Tower is depicted as being over 1500 meters (5,000 feet) tall.

The Return of the King film also shows Barad-dûr as clearly visible from the Black Gate of Mordor. Even granting its enormous size, it was located one hundred miles away and to the east of the Gate, and behind the inner mountain ridges of Udûn so Aragorn's army would probably not have been able to see it. In the film version, the geography of Mordor seems generally to have been compressed somewhat, perhaps for artistic reasons related to rendering such complex stories in a visual medium. In the case of the Black Gate scene, having Barad-dûr visible from the Gate means that the army can see the Eye of Sauron staring at them.
I am a young Tolkienist just as others on this website. I picked up "The Hobbit" in a bookshelf about 4 years ago, read it, and loved it. I started with this website after I found that I couldn't find everything on lotr.wikia.com. I've found that this website has much more in-depth explanations and better pics than any other LOTR site I've been to yet.

In real life, I'm 14 and am facinated by all of the Tolkien family works. My favorite Elf character is Fingolfin of the Noldor elves. My favorite human character is Earendil and my favorite Vala is Manwe.
