Meriadoc was the son of [[Saradoc Brandybuck|Saradoc]] and [[Esmeralda Took|Esmeralda]]. Claiming descent from [[Gorhendad Oldbuck]], he also had [[Took Family|Tookish]] blood through his mother, and also his father's grandmother, [[Mirabella Took]]. He was also first cousins with Peregrin Took.<ref name=tree/> With him they wandered in the [[Marish]] and were friends of [[Farmer Maggot]].<ref name=mushrooms/>

Around {{TA|3000}} Merry witnessed a strange scene: he saw [[Bilbo Baggins]] becoming invisible in order to avoid a meeting with the [[Sackville-Bagginses]]. Startled, he got through the hedge and walked along the field inside, and watched as Bilbo reappeared, and put a [[The One Ring|glint of gold]] in his pocket. This made teenage Meriadoc very curious and he even looked into Bilbo's [[There and Back Again|private diary]].<ref name="Conspiracy"/>

Merry kept this knowledge private but was always suspicious. He was present with his family at [[Bilbo's Farewell Party]]<ref name=tree/> and [[23 September|the next day]] of Bilbo's disappearance, [[Frodo Baggins|Frodo]] had a hard day keeping his things from unwanted hobbits who came to loot [[Bag End]], and put Merry to keep an eye on them in order to rest; until the [[Sackville-Baggins Family|Sackville-Bagginses]] came to Merry demanding to see Frodo. Later [[Lobelia Sackville-Baggins|Lobelia]] left angrily calling Frodo a "Brandybuck", which Merry said was a compliment.<ref>{{FR|Party}}</ref>

Since Bilbo's disappearance, he believed that Frodo would soon follow. He shared his secrets with [[Conspirators|a group of Frodo's friends]], namely [[Samwise Gamgee]], [[Peregrin Took]], [[Fredegar Bolger]]. The Conspirators, sought to protect Frodo (and [[The One Ring|the Ring]]) without his knowledge. When Frodo sold [[Bag End]] to move to [[Crickhollow]], Merry and Fredegar were told to wait for him and make preparations for his arrival.<ref>{{FR|Three}}</ref> However, knowing that Frodo would begin a secret journey, also arranged for provisions and [[ponies]], planning to accompany him. On the [[September 25|appointed day]], Merry was worried that Frodo was late and as the fog was getting thick, he crossed the [[Bucklebury Ferry]] towards [[Stock]] to see if his friends were lost; just as he crossed, he saw [[Farmer Maggot]]'s wagon approaching, bringing Frodo, Sam and Pippin.<ref name=mushrooms>{{FR|Mushrooms}}</ref>

After dinner in Crickhollow, Frodo prepared to reveal to his friends that he was going to have to leave Crickhollow and go to [[Rivendell]]. During the following trip to [[Rivendell]], Merry seemed to have a greater knowledge of the [[Old Forest]] than any of the other Hobbits. However, when they encountered [[Old Man Willow]] Merry (and Pippin) were both captured and had to be rescued by [[Tom Bombadil]].<ref>{{FR|I6}}</ref> Merry and Pippin were captured again (along with Sam and Frodo) by a [[Barrow-wights|Barrow-wight]] upon the [[Barrow-downs]], but Tom again came to their rescue. Upon reaching the inn, Merry was out for a walk and saw a [[Nazgûl|Black Rider]]. He tried to follow it, but it disappeared. Merry was then overtaken by the [[Black Breath]] and fainted. But before any harm could come to him, [[Nob]] came to his aid; he returned to the Prancing Pony and warned his companions who were talking with [[Strider (Aragorn)|Strider]].<ref name="Strider">{{FR|I10}}</ref> During the trip through the wild with Strider, he often saw the most deeply into the others. After Frodo was wounded on [[Weathertop]], he became the one who consulted most with Strider, and in a way became the spokesman for the Hobbits.

After reaching [[Rivendell]], he, with Pippin, insisted on not being left behind on the [[Quest of the Ring]]. Therefore they were chosen as the eighth and ninth members of the [[Fellowship of the Ring]].<ref>{{FR|II3}}</ref>

At the gate of [[Moria]], [[Gandalf]] commended Merry for being "''of all people''" on the right track with the riddle (though this was accidental). At the [[Breaking of the Fellowship]], Merry and Pippin ran straight into a company of [[Orcs]] while they were looking for Frodo. [[Boromir]] attempted to rescue them, but many [[Uruk-hai]] arrived, and they shot him with arrows. Captured with Pippin by Uruk-hai, the two were separated from the rest of the Fellowship. Merry aided Pippin in an attempt to deceive [[Grishnákh]] into thinking that they had the One Ring, and he could have it.<ref>{{TT|III3}}</ref> Because of this, they escaped into [[Fangorn Forest]] during the attack by [[Éomer]] and his [[Rohirrim|Outriders]]. Thus they became the first mortals for many centuries to encounter the [[Ents]] of Fangorn. They drank of the [[Ent-draughts|Ent-draught]] which caused Merry and Pippin to become the tallest hobbits in history. Also, they were present at the [[Entmoot]],<ref>{{TT|III4}}</ref> and the resulting destruction of [[Isengard]], after which Treebeard appointed them door-wardens of [[Orthanc]]. While Pippin and Gandalf headed away to [[Minas Tirith]], Merry stayed with Aragorn and the Rohirrim, developing a close friendship with King [[Théoden]]. Out of love for him, Merry offered the King his service, which Théoden warmly accepted. "''As a father you shall be to me''", Merry said at that time, and Théoden responded "''For a little while''".<ref>{{RK|V2}}</ref>

As Théoden's esquire, Merry returned with him to [[Edoras]] and was forbidden - firmly but gently - by the King to ride with them to the aid of Minas Tirith because he could not ride the mighty horses of the Rohirrim so fast and so far. Merry was disappointed until a young rider named [[Dernhelm]] offered to bear him on his horse.<ref>{{RK|V3}}</ref> In this manner he rode to the [[Battle of the Pelennor Fields]], having a secret understanding with [[Elfhelm]] and several others of the Rohirrim.<ref>{{RK|V5}}</ref>

During the charge and the commencement of the battle he was almost useless, hiding behind Dernhelm and shaking with fright and nausea. However, Dernhelm's steed, [[Windfola]], threw them both upon the coming of the [[Witch-king]]. Affected by the Black Breath, Merry lay almost senseless on the ground, hearing the voice of Dernhelm standing over the body of Théoden -- who had been mortally wounded by the Witch-king -- defying the Nazgûl. He was startled as he opened his eyes to find that Dernhelm was really [[Éowyn]], the King's niece. After Éowyn was thrown down, perhaps mortally wounded, Merry rose to attack the Witch-king in order to protect her. He pierced the sinew behind the Witch-king's mighty knee with the [[Daggers of Westernesse|Barrow-blade]] he still bore, thus breaking the spell of invulnerability surrounding the Wraith. He witnessed Éowyn's destruction of the Witch-king with a thrust into the head, and her subsequent collapse.<ref>{{RK|V6}}</ref> After the death of the Witch-king, he begged forgiveness of a dying Théoden for disobeying his command to remain at Edoras, and the king forgave him with the words "''Great heart will not be denied.''" After the death of the king, he walked beside Théoden's pall-bearers, and fell into a stupor induced by the [[Black Breath]] at some point in his journey. <ref name="Houses">{{RK|V8}}</ref>

After the battle, Pippin found him ill and wandering in a daze outside of [[Minas Tirith]] and alerted Aragorn, who brought him into the city. Almost killed by the Black Breath, he and Éowyn were revived by Aragorn in the [[Houses of Healing]]. <ref name="Houses"/> Because of his condition he was unable to take part in the [[Battle of the Morannon]],<ref>{{RK|V10}}</ref> but afterwards attended the burial of [[Théoden]], at which he wept greatly. They stayed in Edoras with the King before he died that autumn, then they travelled to [[Gondor]] with Pippin, where he was known as Master [[Perian]], to spend their remaining years. They both were laid in [[Rath Dínen]]. It was said that upon [[Aragorn|King Elessar]]'s death, their bodies were placed beside his.<ref name=later/>

He was a great rider of a family that claimed descent from a captain of the [[Northmen]] in the service of the Kings of old. A forefather of Borondir was a Captain of the Northmen who served under the [[Steward]] of Gondor.<ref name="Cirion">{{UT|Cirion}}</ref>

==History==
Borondir was one of the six riders sent out by Steward [[Cirion]] to seek the aid of the Northmen, when the [[Balchoth]] threatened Gondor's northern borders. These riders were sent out in pairs with a day's interval between them. Borondir and his companion were ambushed as they were passing near [[Dol Guldur]]. His companion was slain by arrows, but Borondir escaped this ambush by fortune and the speed of his horse. The ambushers pursued Borondir as far north as the [[Gladden Fields]], and he was often waylaid by men that came of the Forest and forced him to ride far out of the direct way. After 15 days, he came at last to the Éothéod. He was without food for the last two days of his journey; and he was so spent that he could barely speak the message of Cirion to [[Eorl|Eorl the Young]]. He was the only one to reach Eorl alive, and brought him the [[Red Arrow]] and the Seal of the Stewards.

Eorl summoned his council of Elders, and began to prepare for the great riding. However, this took many days, for the lost had to be gathered and mustered, and thought taken for the ordering of the people and the defence of the land. At last the whole host was assembled, and the great éohere set out. Borondir rode at Eorl's right hand, to serve as a guide as he had passed through the lands not long ago. On the journey South, he showed knowledge of [[Lothlórien]]; he understood the strange mist they had to pass was not magic from [[Dol Guldur]], but rather an effort by [[Galadriel]] to stop such magic.

Borondir brought the Northmen to the [[Battle of the Field of Celebrant]], but did not survive the battle. His name was long remembered in the song of ''[[Rochon Methestel]]'', "Rider of Last Hope".<ref name="Cirion"/> He was the first to cross the [[Limlight]] and cleave a path to the aid of Cirion. He fell at last on the Field of Celebrant defending his lord, to the great grief of Gondor and the Éothéod, and was afterwards laid in tomb in the [[Hallows]] of [[Minas Tirith]].

The title was created following the final destruction of [[Arthedain]] in {{TA|1974}} by the [[Witch-king]] of [[Angmar]]. The heir to the throne of Arthedain, [[Aranarth]] son of [[Arvedui]], in {{TA|1976}} chose not to claim the kingship and instead ruled the remnants of his people as Chieftain.<ref>{{App|TA}}</ref> The Chieftains were raised in [[Rivendell]], where the heirlooms of the [[House of Isildur]], were also kept.

They were descendants of [[Isildur]] through the kings of [[Arthedain]]<ref>{{App|Eriador}}</ref> and [[Anárion]] through [[Fíriel]];<ref>{{App|Gondor}}</ref> as such they regarded themselves as the legitimate heirs to both [[Arnor]] and [[Gondor]]. Narmacil inherited the Kingship from his father [[Atanatar II|Atanatar II Alcarin]] in {{TA|1226}}.<ref name="South"/> He also seems to have inherited his father's indolent disposition for in {{TA|1240|n}} he declared [[Minalcar]], the son of his younger brother [[Calmacil (King of Gondor)|Calmacil]], to be the [[Regent of Gondor|Regent of the realm]]. During the remainder of Narmacil's reign Minalcar ruled in his name.<ref name="Gondor">{{App|Gondor}}</ref>

The Easterlings renewed their attacks with a small force, but Minalcar proved to be a vigorous Regent. While Narmacil stayed behind, Minalcar sallied forth in {{TA|1248}} and defeated a large army between [[Rhovanion]] and the [[Sea of Rhûn]]. He then took the name of "Rómendacil" (and later would ascend the throne as Rómendacil II). Because he had learned that the [[Northmen]] were not always loyal to [[Gondor]], [[Third Age 1250|soon after]] this victory, Rómendacil sent his son, [[Valacar]], as an ambassador to secure their allegiance.<ref name="Gondor"/>

[[Vidugavia]], a prince of the [[Northmen]], in the 13th century of the [[Third Age]] claimed such a title, and his realm, the "Kingdom of Rhovanion", was between [[Mirkwood|Greenwood]] and the [[River Running]]. However, even if he was the most powerful of the many Northern princes, he never truly unified all the Northmen under his claimed kingship.<ref name=gondor>{{App|Gondor}}</ref>

Vidugavia had a line of successors, and it seems they may have continued to style themselves as "Kings of Rhovanion" after Vidugavia's time. It was not yet known that the Witch-king was indeed the chief of the [[Nazgûl|Ringwraiths]]. He filled his domain (which also extended into the upper [[Vales of Anduin]]) with [[Orcs]], evil Men, and fell creatures.<ref name=eriador>{{App|Eriador}}</ref>

[[Argeleb I]] of Arthedain claimed the kingship of all Arnor, the line of [[Isildur]] having failed in Cardolan and Rhudaur. In Cardolan, this claim was recognized; however, Rhudaur resisted the claim for an evil lord of the [[Hill-men]], whose allegiance lay with Angmar, seized power since the Dúnedain there were few. Argeleb fortified the [[Weather Hills]], but was killed in battle with Rhudaur and Angmar in {{TA|1356}}.<ref name="AppB2">{{App|B2}}</ref> His son [[Arveleg I]] received help from Cardolan and [[Lindon]], and was able to drive the enemy back from the Weather Hills. In {{TA|1409}}, the Witch-king launched a massive assault upon Arnor, circling around the Dúnedain defences to invade Cardolan from the south. Causing huge destruction, the host of Angmar marched north to Amon Sûl. The great watchtower was taken and destroyed, although its ''palantír'' was saved and brought to [[Fornost]]. Arnor had been weakened hugely but the Witch-king was unable to press home his advantage because, at this point, the Elves unleashed their remaining strength upon Angmar. [[Elrond]] persuaded King [[Amroth]] to send a force of [[Galadhrim]] over the [[High Pass]] to Rivendell. Together with their kinsfolk of Lindon, they dealt such a blow to Angmar that it was subdued for centuries.<ref name=eriador>{{App|Eriador}}</ref>

Arnor, however, was unable to recover its former strength. Suspecting that these attacks might be being coordinated by a single power, the two kingdoms finally brought to an end their years of estrangement. In {{TA|1940}}, [[Arvedui]] heir to the sceptre of Arnor, wedded [[Fíriel]], the daughter of King [[Ondoher]] of Gondor. Soon Ondoher was slain in battle and hoping to save Arnor from Angmar, Arvedui staked his claim to Gondor, by right of his descent from Elendil and by that of his wife. The lords of Gondor however were not for reunification, and the next King [[Eärnil II|Eärnil]], maintained good relations with Arnor, promising them aid against the continuing attacks of Angmar.<ref name=gondor>{{App|Gondor}}</ref>

Arvedui succeeded his father in {{TA|1964}}, but Arnor's strength was fast dwindling. In {{TA|1973}} he sent a message to Eärnil that they were in great straits, and that Angmar was preparing its final assault. Eärnil accordingly mustered a great army, including many horsemen from [[Vales of Anduin]], under the command of his son Prince [[Eärnur]]. The Gondorian force put to sea, but would not arrive in Lindon before Angmar struck.<ref name=gondor>{{App|Gondor}}</ref><ref name=eriador>{{App|Eriador}}</ref>

In {{TA|1974}} the Witch-king amassed his forces and launched a final assault on Arthedain. The Witch-king attacked during the harsh winter weather and [[Fall of Fornost|took]] Fornost. The remnants of the Arnorian forces fled west over the river Lune but Arvedui held out for a short time in the North Downs. He and a few surviving companions were eventually forced to flee to the abandoned mines of the northern [[Ered Luin]]. With their food running out, they sought refuge with the [[Lossoth]] of [[Forochel]]. Receiving word of the King's whereabouts, Cirdan sent a ship to the [[Icebay of Forochel|Icebay]] to rescue him. Against the advice of the Lossoth chieftain, Arvedui boarded the ship, which that night was wrecked by a storm from the North. Arvedui drowned, and with him were lost the ''palantíri'' of Fornost and Amon Sûl.<ref name=eriador>{{App|Eriador}}</ref>

The Witch-king now sat the throne in the king's palace, but it was not long before Eärnur arrived in much joy and wonder among Elves and Men. There were so many ships that the fleet filled [[Forlond]], [[Harlond (Lindon)|Harlond]], and the [[Grey Havens]]; amazing the people of the North, even though this was but a small part of Gondor's strength. Once Círdan summoned the [[Elves of Lindon]] and what remained of the [[Men of Arnor]], the allied host marched across the [[Lune]] to challenge the occupiers of Fornost.<ref name=gondor>{{App|Gondor}}</ref>

The Witch-king, confident and proud after his recent victories, did not prepare for a siege, but sent his army out to face the [[Host of the West (Arnor)|Host of the West]]. The Host came down from [[Hills of Evendim]] and engaged the forces of Angmar in the plains between [[Nenuial]] and Fornost. The Host of the West had the better of the [[Battle of Fornost|fighting]], and the forces of Angmar began to retreat back to Fornost. Suddenly, out of the north, came the main body of the cavalry, which had passed around the Hills and outflanked the enemy. They fell upon the forces of Angmar and scattered them in a great rout. The Witch-king gathered what troops he could and tried to lead them back to [[Carn Dûm]] but was overtaken by the cavalry of Gondor led by Prince [[Eärnur]]. At the same time a force of Elves led by [[Glorfindel]] came up out from [[Rivendell]] and the remnants of Angmar's army were utterly destroyed. Near the end of the battle, the Witch-king attempted to slay [[Eärnur]], but fled upon the appearance of [[Glorfindel]]. So utterly was the host of Angmar crushed that not a single Man or Orc of that realm remained west of the [[Misty Mountains]].<ref name=gondor>{{App|Gondor}}</ref>

Two years after the [[Battle of Fornost]], [[Frumgar]] led the [[Éothéod]] into the northern [[Vales of Anduin]], and drove away what remained of the people of Angmar on the east side of the Mountains, thus being the final act of the centuries-long conflict.<ref>{{App|Eorl}}</ref>

===Aftermath===
The destruction brought about by the war left Eriador heavily depopulated and the North-kingdom in shambles. Arvedui's son [[Aranarth]] would not take any kingship but took the title of [[Chieftains of the Dúnedain|Chieftain of the Dúnedain]] for his people, the [[Dúnedain of Arnor]], were too few and took to a [[Ranger of the North|secretive, nomadic lifestyle]].<ref name=eriador>{{App|Eriador}}</ref>

The [[Shire-folk]] survived, though war swept over them and most of them fled into hiding. Afterwards in the peace that followed the Shire-folk ruled themselves and prospered. They chose a [[Thain]] to take the place of the King, and were content; though for a long time many still looked for the return of the [[King of Arnor|King]].<ref name=eriador>{{App|Eriador}}</ref>

Fornost was not resettled after the war and stayed a lonely ruin, feared by the [[Men of Bree]], who called it [[Deadmen's Dike]]. When Araval came to the throne Arthedain had been at war with [[Angmar]] for 400 years, and the [[Dúnedain]] had achieved very little in preventing the power of this old enemy from spreading.

Araval, in coalition with the [[Elves]] of [[Lindon]] and [[Rivendell]], went to battle with the forces of Angmar in {{TA|1851}} and returned victorious. After this victory, Araval attempted to re-occupy [[Cardolan]], but the "evil [[wights]]" (likely referring to the [[Barrow-wights]]) terrified anyone who attempted to dwell there.<ref name=Elendil/>

Unfortunately, Araval's victory was of no avail in the long term: under [[Araphant]], Araval's son, Angmar recovered and continued its attacks on Arnor; and under [[Arvedui]], Araval's grandson, Angmar finally defeated Arthedain, laying Arnor to waste and scattering the remnants of the Dúnedain.

Araval ruled Arthedain for seventy-eight years, and was succeeded by his son [[Araphant]] upon his death in 1891.<ref name=Elendil/><ref name=North/>

Arahael was raised by [[Elrond]] in [[Rivendell]] (as were all his descendants) while his father protected [[Eriador]] from the evils of the wild with the help of other [[Rangers of the North|Rangers]].

Arahael's reign was uneventful (as far as we know), due to the secretive (and therefore now little-known) nature of the [[Dúnedain]], and the [[Watchful Peace]] which there was at that time. Despite his father's successes, [[Angmar]] rebuilt its strength and continued its attacks on Arthedain which Araphant struggled to hold off with dwindling strength.<ref name="Elendil"/> Arthedain had been at war with Angmar for 500 years, and this was taking its toll on the [[Dúnedain]] as their resistance was starting to fail.

It was during Araphant's reign that the long silence and estrangement between the southern kingdom of [[Gondor]] and the northern kingdom ended when Araphant took counsel with the [[King of Gondor]], [[Ondoher]]. They realised that a single force was co-ordinating the attacks on both of their kingdoms and that they should work together to combat this evil. In {{TA|1940|n}}, Araphant's son, [[Arvedui]], married the daughter of [[Ondoher]], [[Fíriel]], in token of the new alliance between Gondor and Arthedain.<ref name="Gondor">{{App|Gondor}}</ref>

However, the alliance proved fruitless because neither kingdom could spare help for the other. Arthedain was soon attacked by the forces of the [[Witch-king]], whilst Gondor was under attack by the [[Wainriders]].

When Ondoher died four years later, [[Gondor]] was left kingless, so [[Arvedui]] claimed the kingship of Gondor on behalf of his wife, but the Steward [[Pelendur]] persuaded the [[Council of Gondor]] to select [[Eärnil II|Eärnil]], a distant relative of Ondoher, instead. However, the heirs of Arvedui did not forget this and claimed to be the heirs of both [[Isildur]] and [[Anárion]].<ref name="Gondor"/>

Aranarth was the son of [[Fíriel]], the daughter of King [[Ondoher]] of [[Gondor]], and [[Arvedui]], son of King [[Araphant]] of Arthedain, and as such, he was descended from both [[Isildur]] and [[Anárion]].

When he was only young, the [[Witch-king]] of [[Angmar]] destroyed the [[Arnor|North-kingdom]] and overran [[Fornost Erain|Fornost]]. Most of the remnants of the [[Dúnedain]] fled over the [[Lhûn|Lune]] into [[Lindon]]. However, Aranarth's father held out upon the [[North Downs]] until he escaped to the north. After hiding in abandoned dwarf-mines in the [[Blue Mountains]] the King and his men sought the help of the [[Lossoth]], who gave them grudging aid.

Aranarth reported to [[Círdan]] of the King's flight to the north. Círdan sent a ship to the [[Icebay of Forochel]] to seek and rescue him. However, the hull of the ship was broken on the ice and all of the passengers drowned (including Arvedui) and the two ''[[palantíri]]'' the King had secured from the fall of Fornost were lost.<ref name="Eriador">{{App|Eriador}}</ref>

As the heir of Arvedui, this made Aranarth the King of Arthedain (and nominally the claimed title of [[Kings of Arnor|King of Arnor]]), but he did not claim this title as the kingdom had been destroyed. He instead claimed the title of [[Chieftains of the Dúnedain|Chieftain of the Dúnedain]], and with the remnants of the Dúnedain (thenceforth known as the [[Rangers of the North]]) he rode with [[Eärnur]] of Gondor to destroy the kingdom of Angmar.<ref name="Gondor">{{App|Gondor}}</ref>

The first king of Arthedain was [[Amlaith]], the eldest son of [[Eärendur (King of Arnor)|Eärendur]] the last [[King of Arnor]].<ref name="North">{{App|North}}</ref> The kingdom of Arnor split into three pieces after the death of Eärendur. The other two kingdoms were named [[Cardolan]] and [[Rhudaur]].

Beginning with [[Argeleb I]] onwards to the Chieftains of the Dúnedain, their names included the [[Elvish]] prefix ''Ar(an)-'' indicating loyal claim to the whole Arnor, after the lines of [[Cardolan]] and [[Rhudaur]] failed<ref>{{App|North}}, note 4</ref> and the kings of Arthedain claimed the title King of Arnor.<ref>{{App|Eriador}}</ref> Practically speaking, however, their power was limited to the land of Arthedain which gradually diminished over the course of their seven hundred-year struggle with [[Angmar]].

Angmar finally triumphed over Arthedain in {{TA|1974}} with the destruction of [[Fornost]]. Arvedui, the last king, fled to the north, where he perished in a winter storm while trying to escape the frozen wastes of [[Forochel]]. Arvedui's son, Aranath, chose not to claim the kingship and instead became the first [[Chieftain of the Dúnedain]] in {{TA|1976}}.<ref name="TA"/> This marked the end of the kingship, though not of the dynasty of Isildur.

==Duties and Office==

The duties would have been highly similar to those of the [[Kings of Arnor]], though much reduced in scale. Several kings were involved in the wars against Angmar, where they would have led the forces of Arthedain against their foes.

The kings would also share the same badges of office that the Arnorian kings once used: the [[Shards of Narsil]], the [[Ring of Barahir]], and the [[Sceptre of Annuminas]]. After the dissolution of the kingship, these would pass to the keeping of [[Elrond]], with the brief exception of the Ring of Barahir, which had to be retrieved from the [[Lossoth]].<ref name="North"/>

The kings controlled two of the three northern [[Palantíri]]: those in [[Elostirion]] and [[Annuminas]]. After the fall of [[Amon Sûl]], they would gain the palantìr formerly housed there as well. However, the latter two palantíri would be lost forever in the shipwreck that killed Arevdui.

In order to vanquish the evils of Angmar, Eärnur, Círdan and [[Glorfindel]] captained a combined host from Gondor, [[Lindon]] and [[Rivendell]] and marched across Eriador in such a great force that not a single Orc was left to the west of the [[Misty Mountains]].<ref name="Gondor"/>

Despite the eventual victory over the Witch-king, Arnor was utterly defeated, and the Dúnedain of the North became a scattered and [[Rangers of the North|wandering people]]. The line of kings endured, however, in Aranarth who took the title of [[Chieftain of the Dúnedain|Chieftain]], all the way down to [[Aragorn|Aragorn Elessar]]; and when Aragorn claimed the throne of Gondor he did so as both the heir of Isildur and Anárion due to the fact he was descended from Fíriel - a claim none of the heirs of Arvedui forgot.

As such, Malbeth's prophecy proved true, for Arvedui was indeed the last King of Arthedain; likewise, the last king of Gondor was Eärnur who was killed by the Witch-king. There would not be another king in the north until Aragorn II Elessar reunited the thrones of Gondor and Arnor in the [[Reunited Kingdom]].

According to the records of [[Gondor]], Argeleb was the [[High King]] in {{TA|1601}} when many [[hobbits]] migrated from [[Bree]]; the King granted them permission to cross the [[Bridge of Stonebows]] and to settle the land beyond the [[Baranduin]] to dwell in. He demanded in return to acknowledge his lordship, keep all bridges and roads and speed the royal messengers.<ref>{{FR|Hobbits}}</ref> These hobbits were joined in [[The Shire]] by [[Stoors]] from [[Dunland]] around {{TA|1630|n}}.<ref name="TA">{{App|TA}}</ref> Prior to this, the area of the Shire had been unpopulated and regarded as the king's hunting ground.

The '''House of Anárion''' was the extended house of the nobles and royalty of [[Gondor]], descended from its first [[Kings of Gondor|Kings]].

==History==
The house included the Kings of Gondor and their heirs, of course, but also their siblings and their descendants. On several occasions, the direct line of descent failed in Gondor, and other members of the house were called on to take up the Kingship. Most notable among these was [[Meneldil]] himself, the first King to rule Gondor in his own right, who took up the throne on the death of his uncle [[Isildur]].

There are examples of members of the Royal House being granted important military roles. For example, the great [[Gondorians|Gondorian]] general [[Eärnil II|Eärnil]] was a member of the Royal House, being a descendant of [[Telumehtar]], great-grandfather to the reigning King [[Ondoher]]. Indeed, when Ondoher and his heirs were lost, [[Eärnil II|Eärnil]] eventually succeeded to the Kingship himself.

One important political role, however, was closed to members of the Royal House: that of Steward. When [[Rómendacil I]] created the Stewardship, he specified that no member of the House should ever take the role. The descendants of the [[House of Húrin]], who would eventually take on the hereditary Stewardship of the realm, were noted as being of high [[Númenóreans|Númenórean]] blood, but they were not members of the Royal House itself.

At the last years of the Kingship, royal descendants of pure Númenórean blood had become few; several of the last Kings were childless and heirs were chosen from the House, until the death of [[Eärnur]]; no claimant for the throne could be found or whose claim all would accept, and people were afraid of a new [[Kin-strife]] that would devastate the kingdom.<ref name="Gondor">{{App|Gondor}}</ref>

When [[Denethor|Denethor II]] was about to immolate himself upon a pyre, he proudly told [[Gandalf]] that he was a "Steward of the House of Anárion". Nargothrond was the hidden stronghold of [[Finrod Felagund]] who built it as a safe haven for the Noldor against the forces of [[Morgoth]]. [[Túrin]], was led there by [[Gwindor]], a lord of Nargothrond, and during his stay there Túrin becoming mighty among the Elves and grew in favour of King [[Orodreth]], becoming his chief counsellor and ruled all matters of war. Túrin had no liking of their manner of warfare of stealth and ambush<ref name="OTT">{{S|21}}</ref> preferring battle in the open so the Noldor built a mighty [[Bridge of Nargothrond|bridge over the Narog]] for swifter passage. A great store of weapons were made and the Elves forsook their secrecy and went into open war.

Five years since the arrival of Túrin in Nargothrond, they were visited by [[Gelmir (messenger of Círdan)|Gelmir]] and [[Arminas]] of the people of [[Finarfin]] whom have dwelt with [[Angrod]]. They gave warning of a great gathering of Orcs about [[Tol-in-Gaurhoth|Sauron's Isle]]<ref name="FALL">{{CH|11}}</ref> and a message from the [[Valar|Vala]] [[Ulmo]] to shut their [[Doors of Felagund|doors]] and go not abroad. Túrin rebuffed the Vala's warning and kept fighting against Orcs.

In the same year, the hosts of Morgoth had defeated [[Handir]] and the [[Men of Brethil]] causing them to retreat deeper into the woods.<ref name="FALL"/> Therefore, the way to Nargothrond was open, and in autumn Morgoth sent forth his host of Orcs with [[Glaurung]] at its head. In their way, the dragon burned [[Talath Dirnen]], so their coming was soon known by the Elves.

===Battle===
Túrin counselled Orodreth to meet them in open battle. The host of Nargothrond went forth with Orodreth leading alongside Túrin and Gwindor. The host of Orcs were much larger than anticipated, none could withstand the assault of the dragon Glaurung except for Túrin and his [[dwarf-mask]] and the Elves were driven back into the field of Tumhalad.

In-between [[Narog]] and [[Ginglith]] the host of Nargothrond was defeated. Orodreth was slain in the forefront of the battle, and Gwindor was mortally wounded.

===Aftermath===
Túrin bore a wounded Gwindor on his horse and fled the battlefield, in the woods Gwindor urged Túrin to make haste back to Nargothrond and save [[Finduilas]] before dying from his wounds. Túrin gathered as much of the rout as possible and sped back to the fortress. The few survivors of the battle fled to Nargothrond, some that didn't eventually made their way into Doriath<ref name="OTT"/> and some possibly fled as far as the [[Mouths of Sirion]].

After defeat of the Elven host, Glaurung turned towards the stronghold inevitably [[Fall of Nargothrond|sacking the city]].

The battle appears in Tolkien's earliest writings of the [[Narn i Chîn Húrin (tale)|Tale of Turambar]]; "[[Turambar and the Foalókë]]".<ref>{{LT2|II}}</ref> The site of the battle is not explicity made clear as the text implies that the battle took place at the home of the Rodothlim ([[Elves of Nargothrond]]) or at least in the vicinity, moreover it is worth mentioning that certain place-names are absent in the tale one of which includes [[Tumhalad]]. The main elements remain; the Rodothlim's policy of secrecy and Túrin changing that which ultimately lead to their destruction.

In the battle told in ''[[The Silmarillion]]'', Orodreth was slain at Tumhalad and Gwindor was carried off away and died later. In the earliest version Orodreth is carried off from the battle with the help of Flinding (Gwindor) and Orodreth reproaches Túrin for his role in the downfall of the Rodothlim - as does Gwindor in ''The Silmarillion''. It is noted that Gwindor took over most part of the role of Orodreth when the story evolved, whilst Orodreth takes over the role of another character in the tale Galweg who is absent entirely in ''The Silmarillion''.<ref>{{LT2|IIn}}</ref> Galweg is notable for being the father of Failivrin (Finduilas) much like how Orodreth was her father in ''The Silmarillion''.

It was built near the northwestern shores of the [[Belegaer|Great Sea]] in the range of the [[Iron Mountains]] as a first defence against any attack on Melkor's realm from the Valar in Aman. It was commanded by [[Sauron]], his lieutenant. <ref name=s3>{{S|3}}</ref><ref>{{S|Map}}</ref>

After the [[Battle of the Powers]], the Valar [[Captivity of Melkor|captured Melkor]] and took him in chains back to [[Valinor]], although beneath the ruins of [[Utumno]] and Angband lay many hidden chambers and vaults in which some of Melkor's servants escaped the Valar's assault. Some [[Men]]—mostly related to the [[House of Hador]] of [[Beleriand]]—settled between the [[Grey Mountains]] and [[Greenwood]], and they allied with the [[Longbeards]] against Morgoth's [[Orcs]].<ref name=relations>{{PM|Relations}}</ref> This alliance ended in the [[Second Age]] after [[Sauron]] destroyed [[Eregion]], which prompted the Longbeards to seal Moria. During this time, Orcs took control of the Grey Mountains.<ref name=relations/>

===The Awakening of Durin's Bane===
Durin's folk started to gather in the Grey Mountains in {{TA|1981}} after [[Balrogs|Durin's Bane]] was awakened in their ancestral home of [[Khazad-dûm]], which its people fled in fear. Another portion of [[Durin's folk]] lead by King [[Thráin I]] established the [[Kingdom under the Mountain]] founded the [[Kingdom under the Mountain]] in {{TA|1999}}<ref name="Durin">{{App|Durin}}</ref> at [[Lonely Mountain|Erebor]].

Around {{TA|2000}}<ref>{{HM|Guide}}, entry "Scatha"</ref>, many centuries before [[Durin's Folk]] established a kingdom in the Ered Mithrin, [[Scatha]], a mighty [[Long-worms|Long-worm]] of the [[Grey Mountains]] and one of the greatest [[Dragons]] to infest that range of the north, had plundered treasure from the [[Dwarves]] and kept it in his hoard. He was slain by [[Fram]] son of [[Frumgar]] in the early days of the [[Éothéod]]. His recovered hoard was the subject of great dispute between the [[Éothéod|Men of the Éothéod]] and the [[Dwarves]] of that region, who claimed the hoard as their own. Fram rebuked their claim, and sent them the teeth of the dragon, with the words, "Jewels such as these you will not match in your treasuries, for they are hard to come by." It was rumoured that for this insult the Dwarves killed him.<ref>{{App|Eorl}}</ref>

In {{TA|2210}} King [[Thorin I]], learning that most of his people were gathering in the Grey Mountains, left the Lonely Mountain to join the Dwarves to the north, for those mountains were rich and little explored.<ref name="Durin">{{App|Durin}}</ref>

===The War of the Dwarves and Dragons===
For many years, Durin's folk prospered in the Ered Mithrin but, the dragons of the [[Forodwaith]] eventually multiplied and became strong, and in {{TA|2570}}<ref name="AppB">{{App|B2}}</ref> the Dragons made war on the dwarves, sacking and plundering their halls. The Dwarves held out for around twenty years, but finally in {{TA|2589|n}}<ref name="AppB"/> the Dragons attacked the halls of King [[Dáin I]]. King Dáin, and his second son [[Frór]], were killed by a [[Cold-drake]] outside his door to his halls.<ref name="Durin"/>

Following the death of their king, most of [[Durin's Folk]] abandoned the Grey Mountains. In {{TA|2590|n}},<ref name="AppB"/> King [[Thrór]] and his uncle [[Borin]] returned to the Erebor with the [[Arkenstone]] to re-establish the Kingdom under the Mountain. However, Thrór's younger brother [[Grór]] led others to the [[Iron Hills]].<ref name="Durin">{{App|Durin}}</ref>
