After his return from the War of the Ring, Merry Brandybuck became well known among the Shire-hobbits for his writing. Among his works were discussions of calendars and place-names, but perhaps most important was his Herblore of the Shire. In that book, he discussed the origins and history of the Hobbits' 'art' of smoking Pipe-weed, tracing it back through Tobold Hornblower (who introduced it to the Shire) to its ultimate origins in Middle-earth, in the lands along the southern banks of the Anduin.
The New Shadow was an incomplete sequel (approximately 13 pages) to The Lord of the Rings that Tolkien quickly abandoned. It is set in the time of Eldarion, Aragorn's son, approximately 105 years after the Fall of the Dark Tower. In it is mentioned the Dark Tree, and two characters: Saelon and Borlas. Tolkien commented this on it:

Christopher Tolkien published this text in the twelth volume of his History of Middle-earth, entitled The Peoples of Middle-earth.

The History of the Dwarves began with their creation, and here ends with the dwindling of their race.

The Creation of the Dwarves
The Dwarves were created by Aulë the smith (whom they called Mahal) somewhere in Middle-earth, and were put to sleep until the creation of the Elves. The Seven Fathers of the Dwarves were created, by which all Dwarves are descended from. However, Aulë did not have the power to give life to his creations; only Eru Ilúvatar could give life. Realizing this, Aulë went to Eru to confess his sin and gave Eru his children. Eru accepted them and made them his adopted children, and they were to awake after the Elves appeared on Arda.

The Years of the Trees
The Seven Fathers awoke throughout Arda in pairs: the Firebeards and Broadbeams, Ironfists and Stiffbeards, Blacklocks and Stonefoots, and Durin I the father of the Longbeards, who awoke alone. These clans made their halls where they awoke: the Firebeards and Broadbeams, in the Ered Luin, where they built the cities of Nogrod and Belegost, and Durin who awoke in the Misty Mountains settled in the caves above Kheled-zâram. We do not know exactly where the Ironfists, Stiffbeards, Blacklocks, and Stonefoots awoke.

They all became very prosperous in their mountains, making fine jewelry, weapons, and other treasures.

The first meeting of Elves and Dwarves in Beleriand took place in the year 1250 of the Trees. Even if their friendship was cool, the Dwarves worked for the Sindar, delving the caves of Menegroth and forging weapons for them.

The First Age
The First Age came with the awakening of Men.

After the Return of the Noldor, Finrod Felagund desired to settle himself in the Caverns of Narog. So he built a great city in those caverns, and the Dwarves of the Ered Luin aided him. They liked him, and gave him the dwarven name of Felagund, which meant “hewer of caves”. They eventually made for him the Nauglamír.

The Second Age
Meneldur: Broken link

Stars play a prominent role in Tolkien's mythology. According to The Silmarillion, the stars were created by the Vala Varda (thus her names Tintalle = Q. Kindler, Elentari = Q. Star-queen, Elbereth = S. Star-queen). She created them in two phases: first, in the earliest ages of the creation of Arda, and second, prior to the awakening of the Elves. She made the second group using collected light from the Silver Tree, Telperion. These were the brighter of the stars that we see. This group included many of the prominent constellations, including Menelmacar (Orion) and the Valacirca (the Sickle of the Valar, the Big Dipper).

Also created in the second group appear to be many of what we would consider planets rather than stars. These are named Carnil, Luinil, Nenar, Lumbar, Alcarinque, and Elemmire. In his introduction to the Index of Morgoth's Ring, Christopher Tolkien identifies these, respectively, with the planets Mars, Neptune, Uranus, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mercury. Most of these identifications appear to be fairly certain, although there are astronomical problems with the identifications of Neptune and Uranus in the context of the mythology. Note that Venus is not included on this list, as in the mythology, it is not a star (or planet), but rather a Silmaril (see below).

Note that in the standard mythology of the published Silmarillion, the stars of both groups were created long before the Sun and the Moon. They thus contain the unsullied light of creation, and are therefore particularly sacred to the Elves.

The Elves first awoke under the stars (the Sun and Moon did not exist), and the stars were the first thing they saw. The earliest words spoken by the Elves are associated with the stars. According to the Appendix of The Silmarillion, "according to Elvish legend, ele was a primitive exclamation 'behold!' made by the Elves when they first saw the stars. From this origin derived the ancient words el and elen, meaning 'star'." Moreover, when Oromë first met the Elves, he too associated them with the stars and named them the Eldar, the People of the Stars. So important was this identification of the Elves with the stars to Tolkien that when he considered revising his creation myths so that the Sun and Moon existed from an earlier time (see Morgoth's Ring), he still insisted that the Elves must have awoken under the stars.

One frequently-occuring object in the mythology that is not a star but is frequently identified with one is the Star of Earendil. Following his successfuly mission to persuade the Valar to intervene in the wars against Morgoth in the First Age, Earendil and his ship, along with the last remaining Silmaril, were placed in the sky as a sign of hope to the faithful people of Middle-earth. After the war against Morgoth was concluded, a group of the Edain followed Earendil's star to the newly created island that would become Númenor. Consequently, one of the names of that island was Elenna, or Starwards. The Star of Earendil is identified with the Evening or Morning Star, i.e. the planet Venus.

Various characters use stars as emblems throughout the legendarium. An eight-rayed star represents the House of Feanor, and seven eight-rayed stars above a crown and anvil are the emblems of Durin. Both of these are depicted on the doors of Moria (the former because Celebrimbor, one of the makers of the doors, was a descendant of Feanor). Seven stars appeared on the banner of Gondor. Certain jewels are also described as stars, notably the Star of Elendil that Aragorn wore into the Battle of Pelennor Fields. In the Lay of Nimrodel, it is said that "A star was bound upon her brow," clearly describing some kind of jewel.

Other prominent references to stars in The Lord of the Rings include the following.

*Frodo's greeting to Gildor, Elen síla lúmenn' omentielvo (Quenya: A star shines on the hour of our meeting.)
*Sam's song in Cirith Ungol concludes "...above all shadows rides the Sun, and Stars for ever dwell. I will not say the Day is done, nor bid the Stars farewell."
*Travelling through Mordor, Sam sees a star, leading him to conclude that "in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."

:Coincidently I happened upon the listing just a day or two after it was added, and it had been months since I last visited the directory (which is quite good, I wish it was in English). Meneldur, I was wondering if you could translate your review (and possibly the others) into English. We are always looking for constructive criticism to improve the website. Thanks, and hopefully in time we can get 10/10 :) --Hyarion 21:47, 5 June 2006 (EDT)
::Yrch is partially translated in English, have a look at . But since all the team is French and the visitors are essentially French-speaking people, the English version is less developed. Nevertheless, I will translate my review and ask Gil-galad if he can do the same. Meneldur 05:40, 6 June 2006 (EDT)

Aragorn (T.A. 2931 - F.A. 120)

Aragorn was born on March 1, in 2931 of the Third Age, as the son of Arathorn II and his wife Gilraen. Aragorn is a direct descendant of the elder son of Elendil, Isildur (he is Isildur's great x 37 grandson). Elendil founded the kingdoms of Gondor and Arnor in Middle-earth after his homeland of Númenor was destroyed by the Valar in S.A. 3319. Aragorn is named after his ancestor, Aragorn I.

While Aragorn was still an infant, his father was slain hunting Orcs. As was the tradition of his people, Aragorn was fostered in Rivendell by Elrond. At the request of his mother, his identity was kept secret, as she feared he would be slain like his father and grandfather otherwise. Aragorn was named Estel (Sindarin for "Hope") instead, and was not told about his heritage until he came of age in 2951.

Elrond revealed to "Estel" his true name and ancestry, and delivered to him the shards of Narsil. In the woods of Imladris (the Elvish name of Rivendell), Aragorn met and fell in love with Arwen, daughter of Elrond, who had newly returned from Lórien.

Aragorn took up his proper name as Aragorn II, sixteenth of the Chieftains of the Dúnedain of the North, and went into the Wild.

In 2953 he was not present in Rivendell for the last meeting of the White Council. Aragorn met Gandalf the Grey in 2956, and they became great friends. At Gandalf's advice he began to get interested in the Shire, and became known around the area as Strider.

From 2957–2980 Aragorn took great journeys, serving in the armies of King Thengel of Rohan, and Steward Ecthelion II of Gondor. Many of his tasks weakened Sauron and his allies, which during the War of the Ring helped the West survive. His name in Gondor and Rohan was Thorongil (Eagle of the Star), and with a Gondorian attack force he led an assault on Umbar in 2980, taking the city and slaying its lord. Later in 2980 he was in Lórien, and there once again met Arwen. He gave her the heirloom of his House, the Ring of Barahir, and Arwen pledged her hand to him in marriage.

Elrond gave his foster-son permission to marry his daughter, on the condition that he must first become king of both Gondor and Arnor, for only a king would be worthy of Arwen's hand. This may seem a harsh condition, but it should be noted that it is significantly more lenient than the closest precedent, Thingol's request that Beren obtain a Silmaril before marrying Lúthien.

In 3009 Aragorn went into Rhovanion in search of Gollum at Gandalf's request, and he finally caught him in the Dead Marshes in sight of Mordor, and brought him as a captive to King Thranduil's halls in Mirkwood, where he questioned him.

On September 30, 3018, Aragorn was waiting in the Inn known as The Prancing Pony in Bree, where he met up with Frodo Baggins, and began his role in the War of the Ring. Aragorn was aged 87 at that time, but because he is of Númenórean blood he appeared to be in his prime.

The restoration of the line of Elendil to the throne of Gondor is a major subplot of The Lord of the Rings: Aragorn's adventures not only aid Frodo in his Quest, but also bring him closer to the kingship (a move which is politically very complicated). Upon Sauron's defeat, in late 3019 T.A., Aragorn is crowned as King Elessar (Quenya, translated as Elfstone), a name given to him by Galadriel. He marries Arwen Undómiel shortly afterwards, and rules the Reunited Kingdom of Gondor and Arnor until year 120 of the Fourth Age (TA 3141). He died after 210 years of life and 122 years of reign. His wife Arwen gave up her now-mortal life shortly afterwards in year 121, aged 2,901.

Through his ancestor Elendil, Aragorn is a descendant of Elros Tar-Minyatur, Elrond's brother and the first king of Númenor. Elros was one of the half-elven, and was given the choice as to whether he wanted to become the kindred of the Eldar (elves), thus being immortal; or whether he wanted to become one of the Edain (men), thus becoming mortal and dying. Elros, unlike his brother Elrond and father Eärendil, chose to be one of the Edain. Eärendil would have rather become one of the Edain, but he chose to be one of the Eldar because his wife Elwing, who was also one of the half-elven, chose to be one of the Eldar.

Since Elros had chosen to be one of the Edain, his descendants were not counted as half-elven; however, they were given much longer lifespans by the Valar, thus resulting in Aragorn's long life of 210 years.

Aragorn is also known as the Dúnadan ("Man of the West"), Strider, Elessar Telcontar ("Elfstone Strider"), Longshanks (given by Bill Ferny), Thorongil, Wingfoot (given by Eomer), and Estel ("Hope")

He founded the House of Telcontar, and was succeeded by his son Eldarion. He also had a number of daughters, whose names are not mentioned.

In Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings, Aragorn is played by US actor Viggo Mortensen. Instead of explaining the complicated circumstances of an heir of Isildur taking the throne in Gondor (see the article on Pelendur for an example), in the movie Aragorn must overcome his self-doubt to choose the kingship, a cinematic element that adds appeal to the modern audience. In the books, however, there is no doubt as to his purposes of returning as the king.

----
In the earliest unpublished versions of The Lord of the Rings (see: The History of The Lord of the Rings), the character that later became Aragorn was called Trotter instead of Strider and was a hobbit instead of a man. He has wooden feet, because he had once been to Mordor and been tortured there.

The chief of the Easterling forces that occupied Hithlum after Morgoth's victory in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. Lorgan claimed the lordship of the northern land of Dor-lómin, which had been ruled by Húrin Thalion until he was captured in the Battle of Unnumbered Tears.

Lorgan features most prominently in history for the role he played in Tuor's youth. When the Elves that had sheltered Tuor through his childhood set out for the southern lands, Lorgan's Men and Orcs launched an attack on them. The sixteen-year-old Tuor was captured, and held as a servant by Lorgan for three years, after which he managed to escape. He harried the lands as an outlaw, and Lorgan put a price on his head, but after a further four years Tuor disappeared from the north. Lorgan surely never discovered why his foe had vanished: Tuor had set out through the Gate of the Noldor on a journey that would lead him to Turgon in Gondolin.
