History
Vidumavi married Valacar, the son of Minalcar, the King of Gondor. She had a child, Vinitharya, later to be known as King Eldacar. Vidumavi met Valacar in her homeland of Rhovanion. He was sent there by his father who sought to attach the Northmen closer to Gondor than they already were. Valacar and Vidumavi fell in love, and they were wed. They had a son, Vinitharya, in Third Age 1255. In 1260 Vidumavi was brought by her husband to Gondor from Rhovanion where she was welcomed for her fairness and nobleness.

She was, as the Dúnedain of Gondor feared, short-lived (dying in 1344 of the Third Age, before Valacar became king), though she was very old for one of her own people. She bore Valacar a son, the future King Eldacar. Because of Eldacar's short-lived, non-Dúnadan mother, many Gondorians were unwilling to accept him as king, leading to the disastrous Kin-strife.
Tinfang, whom the children call Tinfang Warble is a creature mentioned in The Book of Lost Tales and in the poem Tinfang Warble

Vairë tells to Eriol about Tinfang Warble, a spirit who is half fay of Palúrien and half Elf (Gnome or Solosimpi). He was a flautist whose fluting had an enchantment, and the stars twinkled according to his notes. Not even the Solosimpi could rival his fluting.

He led the Elves forth with his piping, and could be heard in the Great Lands and sometimes also in Alalminórë. Eriol also heard him.

Other versions of the Legendarium
Tinfang Gelion is mentioned in the Lay of Leithian as being one of the greatest of the minstrels of the Elves, beside Maglor and next to Daeron.

Etymology
The meaning of Tinfang is "star-beard" (from tinu "spark, little star" + fang "beard"; found in The Etymologies of The Lost Road).fact He apparently was one of those few elves who grew beards during the first age of their life, like Mahtan.fact

Gelion can also be found in several other compounds.

Inspiration
His name probably comes from an earlier poem Tolkien penned named Tinfang Warble, about a fairy-bird.fact<!--Speculation-->
Saelon was one of the main characters in The New Shadow, the abandoned sequel to The Lord of the Rings.

History
Saelon was caught by Borlas as a kid when he was stealing an apple in Borlas' garden. Borlas' anger and description of Saelon's behaviour as doing orc's work struck in to Saelon's heart - he felt deeply aggrieved and held this as a deep grudge.

Some years later, Borlas and Saelon sat in the garden across from Minas Tirith. After Borlas described the Dark Tree, it is Saelon who later mentions that there were men who have grown under the shadow in recent times and whispered the name Herumor, the possible leader of a rebellious faction in Gondor, to Borlas.
Tilion (Q, pron. [ˈtili.on]) was a Maia who guided the Moon.

History
In the days of the trees in Valinor, Tilion had been a hunter from the company of Oromë. Though he often rode with Oromë, he spent much of his free time in Lórien, under the light of Telperion. Tilion loved silver (he even used a silver bow), and he begged to be given the care of the Moon. The Valar gave him the task. He was said to be less mighty than Arien, the Maia chosen to guide the Sun.

Tilion was reckless at times, and did not always follow the correct path, causing the Moon to be at times in the sky at the same time as the Sun, or not appear at all.

He was also drawn by the splendour of Arien, and sought to come near her, though "the flame of Anar scorched him, and the island of the Moon was darkened".

Morgoth, who hated the new lights, sent spirits of shadows against Tilion, but Tilion vanquished them in a strife in Ilmen.
The true identity of the Hunter is unknown. It is also possible that the Hunter was one of the "shadows and evil spirits" sent by Melkor to spy upon and harass the Quendi, or even Melkor himself.
Tarlang was a legendary giant.

History
According to folklore, Tarlang belonged to a group of giants who in "ancient days" were building the White Mountains in order to prevent Men from entering the giants' land close by the Sea. While carrying a heavy load of rocks, Tarlang stumbled and fell on his face, fatally breaking his neck. His corpse was used by the other giants to finish the wall: his remants formed the pass Tarlang's Neck (from the break in his neck), Dol Tarlang (consisting of his head), and Cûl Veleg and Cûl Bîn (remnants of his load of rocks).

Etymology
The name Tarlang is glossed as "stiff neck", consisting of tarch ("stiff, tough") + lang ("neck").
Old Man Willow was a willow in the Old Forest standing near Withywindle.
History
He might have been an Ent who had become tree-like, or possibly a Huorn, as the Old Forest was originally part of the same primordial forest as Fangorn.

The Great Willow was evil-hearted and from it much of the Forest's hatred of walking things came.. Despite his power, Tom Bombadil, who called him Old grey Willow-man, had power over him, and checked the evil as much as he could, or was willing.

On 26 September 3018 Old Man Willow cast a spell on the hobbits (Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin ), causing them to feel sleepy. Merry and Pippin leaned against the trunk and fell asleep, while Frodo sat on a root to dangle his feet in the water, before also falling asleep. The tree trapped Merry and Pippin in cracks in the trunk, and tipped Frodo into the stream.

Sam managed to fight off the spell and rescued Frodo from the stream. Together they attempted to save Merry and Pippin by lighting a fire at the tree's base, but this only served to infuriate Old Man Willow, who threatened to kill the trapped hobbits. They were saved by the timely arrival of Tom Bombadil who knew "the tune for him".

In the poem The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, Old Man Willow sings Tom Bombadil to sleep and traps him in a crack. He then speaks to Tom, chastising him for spying on him and tickling him with his feather. Tom orders Old Man Willow to release him, which he does immediately.

Other Versions of the Legendarium
In The Return of the Shadow, in the early text for The Lord of the Rings, the incident with Old Man Willow has Bingo (who would later become Frodo) and Odo (who would become Pippin) laying against the tree. Frodo (who becomes Sam) is the one pushed into the river while Marmaduke (later Merry) is the one who resists the spell.

Later in Tom Bombadil's house Tom relates the lore concerning Old Man Willow. He is described as a "grey thirsty earth-bound spirit" that had "become imprisoned in the greatest Willow of the Forest".

Portrayals in adaptations
2002: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers:
:Although he did not appear in the 2001 movie adaptation, a very similar episode with Hobbits being swallowed by a tree was included in the extended edition, where Merry and Pippin are swallowed by a Huorn in Fangorn Forest, to be saved by Treebeard.
History
In his youth, Pharazôn and Amandil, the Lord of Andúnië and later the leader of the Faithful Númenóreans, were dear friends. After some time, Pharazôn departed from Númenor to participate in the wars in Middle-earth that the King's Men were waging against Sauron. While in Middle-earth, he became a great captain and commander of the Númenórean armies. Pharazôn did not return to Númenor until a few years before the death of Tar-Palantir, when he heard of his own father's early death. During his time there, Pharazôn was generous with the wealth he had acquired in Middle-earth, and the hearts of the people were turned toward him. He remained on the island until Tar-Palantir died. At that time, Pharazôn took the King's daughter Míriel as his wife, much against her will, and against the laws of Númenor which prohibited first cousins from marrying. Pharazôn then changed her name to Ar-Zimraphel. Thus he usurped the throne and, taking the Sceptre into his own hand, proclaimed himself King Ar-Pharazôn in 3255.

King of Númenor
Soon after Ar-Pharazôn's unlawful ascent to power, he heard news that Sauron had been assailing the Númenórean settlements in Middle-earth since his return to the island. His captains explained to him that the fallen Maia wished to drive the Númenóreans back to the Sea whence they had come, and declare himself King of Men. They also told Ar-Pharazôn that Sauron wished to destroy Númenor itself, if possible.

Ar-Pharazôn Humbles Sauron
Ar-Pharazôn became very angry upon hearing this news, and decided that he himself would claim the title of King of Men instead, and make Sauron his servant. To accomplish this end, he spent five years preparing a great force. In 3261 he launched the Númenórean fleet and landed at the Haven of Umbar. From there, Ar-Pharazôn and his army marched north to Mordor. Their splendor and might was so great that Sauron's own servants deserted him. Therefore, since he perceived that he could not defeat the Númenóreans through strength of arms, Sauron changed into his fair form and humbled himself before Ar-Pharazôn. The King stripped Sauron of his titles and decreed that he would be taken as a hostage to Númenor, to keep his servants from harassing the Númenóreans in Middle-earth.

Sauron acted as if this decision dismayed him, but it actually furthered his plans to destroy Ar-Pharazôn and the Númenóreans in retaliation for this humiliation. Sauron thus allowed himself to be brought to Númenor by Ar-Pharazôn's army, but as soon as he set foot on the island he began corrupting the minds of the Númenóreans, beginning with their proud King. Sauron flattered Ar-Pharazôn and used his knowledge to help the King gain anything he desired. Ar-Pharazôn responded to this flattery and made Sauron his chief advisor three years after his coming to Númenor.

Sauron's Teachings
Sauron taught the people of Númenor many things, and in most of his speeches he spoke against the Valar, whom most Númenóreans already feared and disliked. Eventually, however, the Maia's teachings began to focus more upon Darkness. He told his listeners that "Darkness alone is worshipful, and the Lord thereof may yet make other worlds to be gifts to those that serve him, so that the increase of their power shall find no end." These words reached the ears of Ar-Pharazôn, and he spoke to Sauron in secret in order to learn more about the Lord of Darkness. Sauron told the King that this Lord was Melkor, and that Eru Ilúvatar was only a lie devised by the Valar to keep Men from rebelling against them. The Maia thus himself lied to Ar-Pharazôn, and said that by serving Melkor, the "Giver of Freedom", the King would escape from these untruths of the Valar, and become stronger than them.

At this time Ar-Pharazôn began to worship the Darkness and Melkor its Lord. He practiced this new religion in secret at first, but soon displayed it openly, and "his people for the most part followed him". The King made ascending the Meneltarma (which the worshipers of Ilúvatar had formerly done, in order to make offerings on its summit) a crime punishable by death. Sauron then advised Ar-Pharazôn to destroy Nimloth, the White Tree of Númenor, which was the last symbol of the Númenóreans' ancient friendship with the Valar and the Elves. Ar-Pharazôn was reluctant to do this, because he had heard of Tar-Palantir's prophecy that the Line of Kings would end when the Tree perished.

Years of Tyranny
However, when a disguised man (actually Isildur) stole a fruit from Nimloth upon hearing Sauron's advice to the King, Ar-Pharazôn assented to the Tree's destruction. It was also at this time that Ar-Pharazôn dismissed his erstwhile friend Amandil from his Council, though the King and his supporters did not otherwise harm Amandil or his family. After the White Tree was felled, Sauron had it burned in a mighty Temple that the Númenóreans had built in Armenelos on his orders. The King and his followers then used this Temple for the worship of Melkor. They captured members of the Faithful and sacrificed them in the fires of the altar, in the hope that Melkor would release them from Death. The Númenóreans did the same to the Men of Middle-earth who lived near their settlements, and thus Ar-Pharazôn became the greatest tyrant that the world had seen since Morgoth, "though in truth Sauron ruled all from behind the throne".

But Ar-Pharazôn and the Númenóreans did not escape death by this means, and eventually the King grew old and was in great fear of the end of his life and the "going out into the Darkness that he had worshiped". Ar-Pharazôn became wrathful and desperate, and at last Sauron gave the King his final advice. The Maia told Ar-Pharazôn that by warring against the Valar and conquering Valinor, their land in the West, he could gain everlasting life. Ar-Pharazôn feared to wage such a war, but his desperation prompted him to begin building a Great Armament in 3310 to attack Valinor.

While this Armament was being constructed, the Valar sent warnings to the Númenóreans in the form of terrible thunderstorms and clouds shaped like Eagles, and the ground began to groan and shake. But these signals only caused the King and his people to harden their hearts yet more, and Ar-Pharazôn (prompted by Sauron) proclaimed, "The Lords of the West have plotted against us. They strike first. The next blow shall be ours!"

War against the Valar
Nine years after the preparations for war began, the Great Armament was completed. Ar-Pharazôn journeyed to the west of Númenor where the fleet was anchored, and boarded his mighty ship Alcarondas. He sat upon his throne in full armor and signaled for the raising of the anchors. The fleet left Númenor just before sundown, and passed into the forbidden seas of the West.

Because no one from the Great Armament ever returned to mortal lands, Ar-Pharazôn's fate remains uncertain. It is said in the Akallabêth that the fleet passed Tol Eressëa and anchored near the coast of Valinor. Upon seeing the splendor of Taniquetil, Ar-Pharazôn became afraid and nearly gave the order to retreat. In the end, however, his pride caused him to go ashore, and a great part of his army followed him. Ar-Pharazôn led his troops to the Elven city of Tirion, and they set up an encampment around it. Then the King proclaimed that the land of the Valar was his, if none would challenge him for it.

At this time, the Valar called upon Eru for aid, and relinquished their authority over Arda. Eru broke the world and made it round, so that Men could never again sail to Valinor. In this catastrophe, Ar-Pharazôn's fleet was pulled into the chasm that opened between the Blessed Realm and mortal lands, and Númenor sank beneath the Sea. Ar-Pharazôn himself (along with the soldiers that had followed him to Valinor) is said to have been buried "under falling hills," and lies in the Caves of the Forgotten "until the Last Battle and the Day of Doom".

Legacy
Though Ar-Pharazôn was the last King of Númenor, the Line of Elros survived through Elendil the son of Amandil, and his two sons, Isildur and Anárion. They managed to escape the Downfall of Númenor that Ar-Pharazôn's actions had caused, and later created the kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor in Middle-earth.

Sometime before his death at the end of the Second Age, Elendil wrote down some of the history of Númenor, culminating in the tale of its destruction. Much of this document was focused on the effects of the reign of Ar-Pharazôn and Sauron's teachings to the Númenóreans. Elendil's work was called the Akallabêth, and its retelling of Ar-Pharazôn's life was one of the only parts of Númenor's history that remained widely known after the Downfall.

Many years after the Downfall, the Kings of Gondor erected a great pillar at Umbar as a commemoration of Ar-Pharazôn. Even though Elendil's people suffered greatly because of the evil that Sauron caused in Númenor as a result of Ar-Pharazôn's deeds, his descendants still wished to honor the King and his army for the humbling of Sauron. When Sauron retook Umbar from the Gondorians, he in turn had this monument to his defeat destroyed.

Etymology
Pharazôn means "Golden" in Adûnaic, and is derived from the word pharaz, 'gold'.

Names
Had Ar-Pharazôn taken a Quenya name, he would have ruled as Tar-Calion. This title does not appear to be a direct translation of his Adûnaic name, since it means "Son of Light" (from cala 'light', and -ion, the masculine patronymic). Like all the other Kings of Númenor who took their royal names in Adûnaic, Pharazôn added the prefix ar ('high', 'King') to his name when he seized the Sceptre.fact

In the Etymologies, Tolkien noted the name Tar-kulu (in the entry for root KUL), which editors Carl F. Hostetter and Patrick H. Wynne suggest could be a formerly unattested name of Ar-Pharazôn.
Other Versions of the Legendarium
In earlier versions of the Akallabêth, Ar-Pharazôn summoned Sauron to Númenor instead of taking an army to Middle-earth and humbling him. The elements of Morgoth-worship and human sacrifice were not originally parts of his rule, either; in the first stories of the Downfall, Ar-Pharazôn merely built the Temple (on top of the Meneltarma, however) for future use and allowed Sauron to watch the people from it.

Alternate stories of Ar-Pharazôn's life written by Tolkien include a version in which Míriel was actually attracted to him, and their marriage was consensual. She gave him most of her power voluntarily. This remarkable textual development existed even in some of the latest revisions of the Akallabêth.
}}Eldarion (Q, pron. [elˈdari.on]) was the son of Arwen and Elessar. His birth marked the reunion of the lines of Eärendil's sons Elros (through Aragorn) and Elrond (through Arwen) separated for millennia. Imrazôr was a Gondorian Prince of Belfalas at the end of the second millennium of the Third Age. He was said to have wedded an Elf-maid named Mithrellas, a wandering companion of Nimrodel. His son Galador was the first Prince of Dol Amroth.
Etymology
The meaning of the name is not known, however it includes Adûnaic zôr which means "flame" or "foam".

The first element imra (perhaps from *imar) is not translated but it also appears in the name Imrahil and perhaps Imâr.

Other Versions of the Legendarium
In an early manuscript Imrazôr and not his son was numbered as the first Prince of Dol Amroth.
Note
Nowhere is it explained why a man living in Gondor late in the Third Age would have the epithet of "The Númenórean".
Théodred (2978-3019) was the only son and heir of King Théoden of Rohan who died in battle at the Fords of Isen during the War of the Ring.

History
Théodred was born to King Théoden and Elfhild, who died in childbirth. Because of his state as prince of Rohan, Théodred also held the title of Second Marshal of the Riddermark.

While his father's health began to fail and Gríma gained more influence, Gríma considered Théodred and Éomer his chief opponents. He tried to bring the two cousins into discredit with Théoden, but their steadfast loyalty even in his apparent dotage. Gríma therefore tried to play them one against the other in the mind of Théoden, representing Éomer as ever eager to increase his authority.

Meanwhile Saruman planned to have the Prince killed. He sent forces against Rohan on February 25, 3019 with explicit orders to kill the Second Marshall at all costs.

Théodred's was warned by his scouts of a mustering of troops at the Gate of Isengard and he reinforced the approaches. He passed over the Isen with the main strength of his cavalry to overthrow Saruman's apparent army before it was fully prepared. He scattered the vanguard, but then discovered the main host prepared for assault and ordered a retreat while the rearguard under Grimbold had to turn and drive back their pursuers.

Retreating, he appointed Grimbold in command of the western bank garrison while himself attempted to man the eyot in the midst of the river. Then a van came and with unexpected speed soon took control of the eastern end of the fords; the fiercest of Saruman's warriors and Orc-men abandoned the rest of the battle and directed their full might around the Prince. As Grimbold came to his defense, Théodred was hewn down by a great orc-man, whom Grimbold slew.

Elfhelm arrived to his support and they lifted the body. Théodred still breathed, only long enough to speak his last words. The news of Théodred's death caused Erkenbrand of Westfold to assume command of the West-mark. With no siblings, this made his cousin, Éomer, heir to the throne of Rohan.
Etymology
Théodred's name is probably taken from the Anglo-Saxon words þēod ("folk", "people", "nation") and rǣd ("counsel").
:Théodred is portrayed younger than he was in the book. His death is a major event early in the movie, whereas, in the book, it has all happened by the time the Three Hunters come to Rohan. He is brought heavily wounded albeit barely alive to Edoras and tended by Éowyn before expiring. His burial is shown in the extended edition. Théodred was played by Paris Howe Strewe.
