The origins of Tom Bombadil are unknown; however, he already existed when the Dark Lord came to Arda, signifying he was alive even before the coming of the Valar.

His role and nature in the Elder Days is unknown, but he must have witnessed most of the major events and battles. He also witnessed the reducing of the great forests that covered all Middle-earth, and perhaps of his powers.

The level of his interactions with the outside world is also unclear; however, he seemed to have a name among many peoples and perhaps became a folkloric figure in the traditions and legends of Elves, Dwarves and Men.
He had contact with the Bucklanders and Farmer Maggot, and perhaps it was this to which he owed his jolly and whimsical attitude.
However, since he was merry and benevolent, some of the Free Peoples considered him a potential ally ( for example, Elrond and Erestor considered that he should be present at the Council of Elrond). ==War of the Ring==

On September 26, T.A. 3018, he encountered four hobbits while he was searching for water-lilies for his wife. Two of those Hobbits, Merry and Pippin, had been captured by Old Man Willow. Tom, who was the master of the Old Forest, rescued them, and took all four of them to his house.

The four hobbits stayed two nights, and he told them many tales and songs. Apparently, Gildor Inglorion had been to Tom's house, as he knew the hobbits were fleeing the Shire. With cunning questions, he made Frodo tell him of the Ring. When Tom tried it on, nothing happened, and when Frodo put it on, Tom could still see him.

The following morning, Tom warned his guests of the Barrow Downs, and advised them to pass any barrow on the western side. He also taught them a song, should they come to peril.

And they did come to peril. Tom chased off a wight with song, and broke the spells on the barrow in which the four hobbits were captured. While he sent the Hobbits into calm down, he went for provisions. He also brought the ponies that had belonged to Merry. After that, he broke the spells of the barrow. From the barrow's mighty hoard, he took a brooch for Goldberry, and gave a dagger to each of the hobbits. He then advised them to make for The Prancing Pony in Bree.

The peril of the hobbits was not over; an attack on their lives was carried out, and their ponies were set loose. The ponies apparently remembered the care they were given in the house of Tom Bombadil, and returned to stay beside Tom's own pony, Fatty Lumpkin. He returned them to Barliman Butterbur, the proprietor of The Prancing Pony. Since he had paid eighteen pence as compensation for the loss, he was now the owner of five fine ponies.

Etymology and other names
Tom Bombadil went by many names:
* To the Elves and Dúnedain, he was known as Iarwain Ben-adar, which translated to "oldest and fatherless".
* To Men (of Rohan and Bree), he was known as Orald. This is an Old English word meaning "very ancient.
* The Dwarves knew him as Forn. This too is a reference too his age: it is Old Norse for "(belonging to) ancient (days)". In some imprints of The History of Middle-earth Index, this name was accidentally spelled with a "P" as the first letter.
* Tom Bombadil is said to be a Bucklandish name, added by Hobbit chroniclers to his many older ones. It is, like many names of the Bucklanders, untranslatable.

Because he is left out of the three major adaptations (Ralph Bakshi, BBC's 1981 series and Peter Jackson's), Tom Bombadil's main role (providing the Barrow-blades) is omitted. He does have several appearances in other adaptations, though.

1955: BBC Radio's The Lord of the Rings:
:One of the few things known about this radio series is that Norman Shelley voiced Bombadil, and Tolkien thought his portrayal "dreadful". Goldberry was portrayed as his daughter, rather than his wife.
:In this series, Tom was voiced by Bernard Mayes. Like Norman Shelley before him, he also voiced Gandalf.

1992: BBC Radio's Tales from the Perilous Realm:
:When he adapted the 1981 radio series, Brian Sibley deeply regretted cutting Bombadil from the radio series. When he made Tales from the Perilous Realm into a radio series, he decided to change the section "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil". Rather than several (unadaptable) Hobbitish poems, Sibley adapted the chapters from The Fellowship of the Ring. Bombadil is voiced by Ian Hogg.

2002: Vivendi's The Fellowship of the Ring:
:Daran Norris portrayed Bombadil with a Scottish accent. His role is much like that in the book, and as one of the few characters in this video game, he keeps most of his songs.

2002: Peter Jackson's The Two Towers:
:In the extended edition, some of Bombadil's poems are transferred to Treebeard, and so is his encounter with Old Man Willow.

2006: EA's The Battle for Middle-earth II:
:Bombadil is a character in this video game. Unlike his nature in the book, he is shown strong and battleready, and plows through enemy lines whilst merrily singing. His most powerful weapon is a "Sonic Song", and all his other weapons are inspired by song and dance.
In April 2008, Gentle Giant released the Tom Bombadil Mini Bust.
Inspiration
Tom Bombadil was inspired primarily from a doll Tolkien's son, Michael, toyed with; it also may have been inspired by the character Väinämöinen (spelt 'Wainamoinen' in English) in the Finnish national epic Kalevala, or Father Francis Xavier Morgan at the Birmingham Oratory:
{{quote|... Father Francis Xavier Morgan, then aged forty-three, who shortly after the Tolkiens moved into the district [Edgbaston] took over the duties of parish priest and came to call. In him Mabel soon found not only a sympathetic priest but a valuable friend. Half Welsh and half Anglo-Spanish (his mother’s family were prominent in the sherry trade), Francis Morgan was not a man of great intellect, but he had an immense fund of kindness and humour and a flamboyance that was often attributed to his Spanish connections. Indeed he was a very noisy man, loud and affectionate, embarrassing to small children at first but hugely lovable when they got to know him.|[[J.R.R. Tom Bombadil was an enigmatic figure that lived throughout the history of Arda. He was known to the Hobbits. He seemed to possess an unequaled power in the land around his dwelling. Although seemingly benevolent, he was not allied to the Free peoples.

His existence passed into Hobbit lore and was referenced in poems such as The Adventures of Tom Bombadil.

History
He is a strange creature
The origins of Tom Bombadil are unknown; however, he already existed when the Dark Lord came to Arda, signifying he was alive even before the coming of the Valar.

His role and nature in the Elder Days is unknown, but he must have witnessed most of the major events and battles. He also witnessed the reducing of the great forests that covered all Middle-earth, and perhaps of his powers.

The level of his interactions with the outside world is also unclear, however he seemed to have a name among many peoples and perhaps became a folkloric figure in the traditions and legends of Elves, Dwarves and Men.

During the Third Age, Tom Bombadil lived in a little house by the river Withywindle in the Old Forest, together with his lovely wife Goldberry. He had contact with the Bucklanders and Farmer Maggot and perhaps he owed his jolly and whimsical attitude to this.

However, since he was merry and benevolent, some of the Free Peoples considered him a potential ally ( for example, Elrond and Erestor considered that he should be present at the Council of Elrond). However, according to Gandalf, Tom Bombadil was perhaps not fully aware of the struggle of Light and Darkness and could not prove useful to their causes.

War of the Ring

Lothlórien was a kingdom of Silvan elves on the eastern side of the Hithaeglir. It was considered one of the most beautiful and “elvish” places in Middle-earth during the Third Age, and had the only mallorn-trees east of the sea.

History
First Settlers
The first inhabitants of the forested area later known as Lórien were a group of Nandor that refused to cross the Hithaeglir. Lórien was probably one of their scattered settlements in the area; but there were no mallorns in that time. Later, however, as the power of the Longbeards of Moria grew, they relocated to the eastern side of the Anduin, across from the Nimrodel. The land in which they dwelt (the forest east of the Hithaeglir, above Fangorn and below Mirkwood) became known in the Silvan tongue as Lórinand, or Laurelindórenan.

The Sindarin Dynasty
The coming of the Sindar was a great boost to the power and culture of the Nandor. The Silvan language was replaced by Sindarin. The arrival of one in particular affected the Nandor of Laurelindórenan: the coming of a Sinda named Amdír. He took over Laurelindórenan, while another Sinda, Oropher, became king of Greenwood the Great.

Celeborn, a Falmarin prince, dwelt with his Noldorin wife Galadriel in Eregion. They made contact with the Nandor of Lórinand, and before long moved there via Moria. After the Fall of Eregion and the death of Celebrimbor, Nenya, one of the Three Rings of the Elves, was delivered to Galadriel. She kept this and became great in the wood.

King Amdír marshaled the Elves of Lórinand during the War of the Last Alliance. His division was cut off from the main body during the Battle of Dagorlad. Their monarch was slain, and not a few of the Nandor went down there. Later their bodies sank down into the Dead Marshes.

The survivors of the battle, which included Amdír’s son Amroth (and Celeborn, if he attended the battle), returned to Lórinand. Amroth was elected King. But Amroth tired of Middle-earth, and wished to go West and seek Valinor. When Moria fell to evil in 1981, many of the Lórinand elves fled south. At this time he departed to Edhellond with his beloved, Nimrodel. The Nandor never saw either of them again.

The Lord and Lady
After Amroth and Nimrodel had passed away, Celeborn and Galadriel took the title of Lord and Lady of Lothlórien, the common Sindarin name for Lórinand. With Nenya, the land was kept pure and alive, and evil was not permitted to penetrate it. They moved back to the western side of Anduin, and built Caras Galadhon, the great center of the woodland kingdom. There Galadriel planted the seeds of the mallorn trees she had brought with her from Lindon, where they grew not. Lothlórien was filled with light and life, and became beautiful. By the power of the Elven Ring the trees did not die.

Under the Lord and Lady Lothlórien prospered for more than a thousand years, time passing without decay under the golden boughs. Celeborn and Galadriel produced a daughter, Celebrían, and their granddaughter Arwen Undómiel was considered the fairest of the elven race. But as the Third Age began to grope for its culmination, troubles at last began to touch the Valley of Singing Gold. As the shadow of Sauron lengthened, and the War of the Ring was imminent, Lórien received eight weary and grief-stricken travelers from the lost mouth of Moria.

They were the remnants of the Fellowship of the Ring, a group of travelers on a quest of immeasurable importance. The border-wardens came across them on February 15, 3019. Among the company were Aragorn, a prince of the Dúnedain and a friend of the Lady, as well as Legolas of Mirkwood. The only reservation the border-wardens had about them was the dwarf, Gimli. They were led in blindfolded for a time, but at Galadriel’s word they were taken to Caras Galadhon and their eyes were released.

There the Elves learned of the death of Gandalf the Grey, and Galadriel knew what evil had been brought into the Golden Wood. She revealed her own ring to him, and showed him her mirror. Then the Fellowship was furnished with new supplies, and sent off down Anduin, bearing the gifts of the Lord and Lady.

War of the Ring
But the coming of the Ring of Power was only the beginning of their troubles. The very night the Fellowship arrived, a band of Orcs crossed the Nimrodel. A regiment or so of Nandor were sent out, and destroyed the Orcs. But they were only the heralds of greater conflicts that were to occur. Sauron unleashed his Rhovanion Campaign, which involved massive attacks on the Golden Wood.

On March 11, Orcs from Dol Guldur swarmed into the forest in a full-scale assault. By the power of the Wood-elves and Galadriel’s ring, they were repulsed. The second wave came on March 15, at the same time as the invasion of Mirkwood. Again, the Orcs were forced out. The third and last attack was made seven days later, March 22. They caused much destruction, but Celeborn led the Nandor in a great counterattack that routed them utterly. Boats were made, and the armies of Lórien crossed the Anduin. They stormed Dol Guldur (the Nazgûl being absent in the war to the south), and took it. Galadriel threw down its walls, and Mirkwood was cleansed. The southern part of Mirkwood fell into the dominion of Lothlórien, and it was called East Lórien.

Afterward
Only two years after the War of the Ring, Galadriel, the Lady of Lórien, took ship West to Valinor. Celeborn left to Rivendell several years later, and light departed from Lórien. The Nandor of that land either merged into the Kingdom of Eryn Lasgalen and Thranduil, or stayed in Lórien to fade and eventually pass away westward.

Cerin Amroth
(Main article: Cerin Amroth)

Cerin Amroth was a mound in Lothlórien where elanor (a golden flower) grew beside niphredil. In the days of Amroth it was where the King built his house. It was one of the most beautiful places in Lórien, save perhaps for Caras Galadhon. There also Arwen fell in love with Aragorn, and they plighted their troth to one another.
Please also tell us where the name comes from and what it means in other languages, as well as what other names the character goes by. As well as their lineage and family tree.

Can I create articles about me or that are my own personal views?
Of course! Registered users have something similar to a 'Folder' for creating these articles. Instead of writing the article in the main namespace, just type User:YourUserName/Your_Article_Name. This separates opinionated articles from factual articles.
* An example being if I want to write a fan fiction about Beren and Lúthien, I'll write it in User:Hyarion/Beren_and_Luthien, then maybe on the Beren and Luthien or the Fan Fictions page I'll link to my story.

Spoilers
For people who have yet to finish reading The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, Unfinished Tales, or even The History of Middle-earth, be careful when reading through this site: there are quite a few spoilers depending on how much of J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium you have read. We don't want to reveal that Frodo Baggins falls into Mount Doom to someone who has not finished The Lord of the Rings and ruin the book for them, now do we?

Links
Due to excessive spamming of links we have added rel=nofollow to any external link, which means when search engines browse the site you will not gain PageRank or higher ranking status on any search engine for placing your link here. This being said, as long as your link is valid and relevant you will of course receive increased traffic because the link is visible.

Misc. Tips
* When using the article's title in the article first bold it, Article Name, then Italicize it, Article Name, then just leave the article name normal.
* When linking to articles you only need to link the first usage. If you continue to use the term Silmarils for example, there is no need to link all instances of it because it becomes excessive and unnecessary.
* If someone edits an article after you and changes something you worked hard on, don't feel bad! We all have different opinions and we are all trying to improve the wiki. If you still think the changes were made unjustly just add a comment on the article's talk page or the editor's talk page to discuss why the changes were made.
* If you save your changes to an article but wish to continue working on it, consider adding your intentions to the article's talk page or adding :Template:Claimed to prevent other editors from working on the article at the same time.

Editing
:See Help:Editing

Image Guidelines
:See Help:Images
* Uploaded images must be related to J.R.R. Tolkien and his works.
* Images may contain personal images as long as they are related to J.R.R. Tolkien.
** An example being images of your collection of Sideshow Weta merchandise is fine.
** A bad example being images of your backyard.
* At present we allow 1-2 images of yourself to be uploaded for use in your profile.
* We are not an image storage site however and images found to be uploaded simply for remote linking will be removed. We are however fine with remote linking to an existing image to an extent. And you are always free to copy the image for yourself as our main goal is spreading the information.
* We are currently fairly lenient on the file size of images. If the image is above our maximum file size limit (you will see this after clicking the upload button) simply click save anyway. Keep in mind there is no need for extensive quality as our images are used primarily in articles.
* Maps are currently not allowed at this time.
* Please make sure the image you are going to upload is fairly good quality, we want to offer the best (to an extent) quality for our visitors.

Administration
Tolkien Gateway is always on the lookout for more administrators we can count on to watch over our growing project. Administrators have a few added features when working on the wiki, such as the ability to rollback edits more efficiently, move pages, delete pages, etc.

To become an administrator a current administrator must suggest you for the position. The community then votes on whether they think this person is capable of the task. If they gain 90% of the majority then they are accepted into the position. The reason for such a high percentage is we wish to make sure all staff deserve the position they hold and the community supports them.

If in the event we feel an administrator is not performing to expectations another administrator can call them on it and the community will vote again, this time whether the person will stay or should have their powers revoked. If at least 75% of the community believes the administrator should be denied their powers, then it is so. If at any time our super-administrators believe an administrator is causing irreplaceable damage then they will be removed of their powers immediately.

HTML to Wiki-Syntax
* HTML-Wiki-Syntax Tool - Allows someone to input HTML code and it will be converted to Wiki-Syntax.
When Winter comes, the winter wild that hill and wood shall slay;
When trees shall fall and starless night devour the sunless day;
When wind is in the deadly East, then in the bitter rain
I'll look for thee, and call to thee; I'll come to thee again!

Entwife:

When Winter comes, and singing ends; when darkness falls at last;
When broken is the barren bough, and light and labour past;
I'll look for thee, and wait for thee, until we meet again:

When spring unfolds the beechen-leaf and sap is in the bough,
When light is on the wild-wood stream, and wind is on the brow,
When stride is long, and breath is deep, and keen the mountain air,
Come back to me! Come back to me, and say my land is fair!

Entwife:

When Spring is come to garth and field, and corn is in the blade,
When blossom like a shining snow is on the orchard laid,
When sun and shower upon the earth with fragrance fill the air,
I'll linger here, and will not come, because my land is fair!
Ent:

When Summer lies upon the world, and in a noon of gold
Beneath the roof of sleeping leaves the dreams of trees unfold,
When woodland halls are green and cool, and wind is in the West,
Come back to me! Come back to me, and say my land is best!

Entwife:

When Summer warms the hanging fruit and burns the berry brown;
When straw is gold, and ear is white, and harvest comes to town;
When honey spills, and apple swells, though wind be in the West,
I'll linger here beneath the Sun, because my land is best!

Ent:

When Winter comes, the winter wild that hill and wood shall slay;
When trees shall fall and starless night devour the sunless day;
When wind is in the deadly East, then in the bitter rain
I'll look for thee, and call to thee; I'll come to thee again!

Entwife:

When Winter comes, and singing ends; when darkness falls at last;
When broken is the barren bough, and light and labour past;
I'll look for thee, and wait for thee, until we meet again:
Together we will tkae the road beneath the bitter rain!

Both:

Together we will take the road that leads into the West,
And far away will find a land where both our hearts may rest.

Entwife:

When Summer warms the hanging fruit and burns the berry brown;
When straw is gold, and ear is white, and harvest comes to town;
When honey spills, and apple swells, though wind be in the West,
I'll linger here beneath the Sun, because my land is best!

Ent:

When Winter comes, the winter wild that hill and wood shall slay;
When trees shall fall and starless night devour the sunless day;
When wind is in the deadly East, then in the bitter rain
I'll look for thee, and call to thee; I'll come to thee again!

Entwife:

When Winter comes, and singing ends; when darkness falls at last;
When broken is the barren bough, and light and labour past;
I'll look for thee, and wait for thee, until we meet again:
Together we will tkae the road beneath the bitter rain!

Both:

Together we will take the road that leads into the West,
And far away will find a land where both our hearts may rest.
<poem style="font-style:italic; margin-left:20px;">
The leaves were long, the grass was green,
The hemlock-umbels tall and fair,
And in the glade a light was seen
Of stars in shadow shimmering.
Tinúviel was dancing there
To music of a pipe unseen,
And light of stars was in her hair,
And in her raiment glimmering.

There Beren came from mountains cold,
And lost he wandered under leaves,
And where the Elven-river rolled
He walked alone and sorrowing.
He peered between the hemlock-leaves
And saw in wonder flowers of gold
Upon her mantle and her sleeves,
And her hair like shadow following.

Enchantment healed his weary feet
That over hills were doomed to roam;
And forth he hastened, strong and fleet,
And grasped at moonbeams glistening.
Through woven woods in Elvenhome
She lightly fled on dancing feet,
And left him lonely still to roam
In the silent forest listening.

He heard there oft the flying sound
Of feet as light as linden-leaves,
Or music welling underground,
In hidden hollows quavering.
Now withered lay the hemlock-sheaves,
And one by one with sighing sound
Whispering fell the beechen leaves
In the wintry woodland wavering.

He sought her ever, wandering far
Where leaves of years were thickly strewn,
By light of moon and ray of star
In frosty heavens shivering.
Her mantle glinted in the moon,
As on a hilltop high and far
She danced, and at her feet was strewn
A mist of silver quivering.
When winter passed, she came again,
And her song released the sudden spring,
Like rising lark, and falling rain,
He saw the elven-flowers spring
About her feet, and healed again
The Poem
<poem>
We knew that land once, You and I,
and once we wandered there
in the long days now long gone by,
a dark child and a fair.
Was it on the paths of firelight thought
in winter cold and white,
or in the blue-spun twilit hours
of little early tucked-up beds
in drowsy summer night,
that you and I in Sleep went down
to meet each other there,
your dark hair on your white nightgown
and mine was tangled fair?

We wandered shyly hand in hand,
small footprints in the golden sand,
and gathered pearls and shells in pails,
while all about the nightingales
were singing in the trees.
We dug for silver with our spades,
and caught the sparkle of the seas,
then ran ashore to greenlit glades,
and found the warm and winding lane
that now we cannot find again,
between tall whispering trees.

There was neither night nor day,
an ever-eve of gloaming light,
when first there glimmered into sight
the Little House of Play.
New-built it was, yet very old,
white, and thatched with straws of gold,
and pierced with peeping lattices
that looked toward the sea;
and our own children's garden-plots
were there: our own forget-me-nots,
red daisies, cress and mustard,
and radishes for tea.
There all the borders, trimmed with box,
were filled with favourite flowers, with phlox,
with lupins, pinks, and hollyhocks,
beneath a red may-tree;
and all the gardens full of folk
that their own little language spoke,
but not to You and Me.

For some had silver watering-cans
and watered all their gowns,
or sprayed each other; some laid plans
to build their houses, little towns
and dwellings in the trees.
And some were clambering on the roof;
some crooning lonely and aloof;
some dancing round the fairy-rings
all garlanded in daisy-strings,
while some upon their knees
before a little white-robed king
crowned with marigold would sing
their rhymes of long ago.
But side by side a little pair
with heads together, mingled hair,
went walking to and fro
still hand in hand; and what they said,
ere Waking far apart them led,
that only we now know.
