The term East Dales probably refers to the northern slopes and valleys of the White Mountains east of the Folde, in Rohan. As such it means more or less the same area as Eastfold, a much more common name. In their book The Lord of the Rings: A Reader's Companion Wayne Hammond ja Christina Scull explain the name simply as a synonym for Eastfold, though they do not give any additional sources for this statement.

East Dales are mentioned only once in The Lord of the Rings, when it is told how those of the Rohirrim who had fallen in the Battle of the Hornburg were buried in two mounds; those of the Westfold in one and those from the East Dales in another.

East Bight was the great indentation in the eastern edge of Mirkwood, a treeless region that was roughly square in shape, some fifty miles to a side, towards the southern end of the wood. The "Bight" was not a natural formation, but rather the result of generations of forestry by the Northmen who had historically occupied the lands east of the Forest, from whom the Éothéod could claim descent. Because of the Bight, that part of Mirkwood immediately to the north of Amon Lanc was less than one hundred miles across, and so it became known as the Narrows of the Forest.
To the east of Mount Doom upon a spur of the Ered Lithui, Sauron constructed his fortress of Barad-d&ucirc;r. The name Gorgoroth has become notable for it strikingly ugly sound, more so than any other word of name related to Sauron and the Orcs. In the published The Silmarillion, Orodreth is the son of Finarfin and Eärwen. This was an editorial decision by Christopher Tolkien, and an admitted mistake. Orodreth is actually Eärwen's grandson, the son of her child Angrod.

Notes
# In The Silmarillion, the family-tree of Elwë shows the Eärwen was the only child of Olwë. However, in the text she is said to have brothers, whose names are unknown.
Eärnur (Third Age 1928 – 2050, aged 122 years) was the thirty-third and last King of Gondor. He took the throne upon the death of his father Eärnil II in Third Age 2043, and after his disappearance, the Stewards of Gondor ruled in his name for many generations.

Eärnur was a great general and his greatest victory was in 1975 in the Battle of Fornost against Angmar which he destroyed. After becoming King he was challenged twice by the Witch-king of Angmar, chief of the Ringwraiths, who now resided in Minas Morgul. The first challenge went unanswered but in 2050 the second came and he accepted. After entering the gates of Minas Morgul, he was never heard from again.

No new king was elected and the rule of Gondor passed to the Stewards, beginning with Mardil Voronwë, who had tried to restrain Eärnur from going to Minas Morgul. The Stewards were to rule "until the King returns" for it wasn't sure at first whether Eärnur had been killed or not. In addition, Eärnur left without an heir, and while many others in Gondor could lay some sort of claim to the kingship, those claims generally had some sort of doubt, and no one wanted to risk another civil war like the Kin-strife, which had been devastating to Gondor.
Eärendur's rule was uneventful (as far as we know), but he was the tenth and last King of Arnor due to dissention amongst his sons.

After his death in 861, probably due to jealousy on the part of the two younger sons, his three sons split Arnor into three separate kingdoms: Arthedain, Cardolan and Rhudaur.

His eldest son and rightful heir, Amlaith of Fornost, became the first King of Arthedain, and it was through Amlaith and his heirs that the line of Isildur endured whilst the line of kings of Arthedain and Cardolan failed - Aragorn II was a direct descendent of Amlaith, and it wasn't until Aragorn became king that Arnor was finally reunified.
Eärendur is a Quenya name meaning "Servant of the Sea", and is a combination of the word ëar meaning "sea", and the suffix -ndur meaning "devotion to, friend of". It is unlikely that Eärendur himself was devoted to the sea: it is more likely that he was named after one of the two previous Eärendurs.
Eärendur was the second son of Tar-Amandil, the third King of Númenor. His brother would take up the Sceptre as Tar-Elendil.

Eärendur is best known by a historical event that did not happen. Tar-Elendil's grandson failed to produce a male heir and according to the law of agnatic primogeniture the Sceptre should have passed to Eärendur's grandson Malantur. However, the law was abruptly changed so that the eldest child would become Ruler of Númenor. This allowed a female to take the Sceptre, which led to Tar-Ancalimë becoming the nation's first Ruling Queen. Thus, had events played out differently, Eärendur's descendants would have become the royal line of Númenor.
Eärendil (Third Age 48 – 324, aged 276 years) was the fifth King of Gondor, ruling for 86 years, from Third Age 238 until his death.

The only recorded historical event to take place during Eärendil's reign was the birth of Elrond's daughter Arwen, three years after he took the throne. No one in Gondor at that could have known how significant that event would be: nearly three thousand years later, Arwen was to wed Aragorn II, a distant descendant of Eärendil's ancestor Elendil, and become Queen of his realm.

Eärendil rule was peaceful and he was succeeded by his son Anardil.
The son of Tuor and Idril, daughter of King Turgon, Eärendil was raised as a child in Gondolin. When Eärendil was seven years old, he escaped the Fall of Gondolin on the shoulders of Idril's house-carle Hendor, living afterwards in Arvernien by the Havens of Sirion. Eärendil later became the leader of the people who lived there, and married Elwing, daughter of Dior the son of Beren and Lúthien. They had two sons, Elrond and Elros.

With the aid of Círdan the Shipwright, Eärendil built a ship, Vingilótë (or Vingilot), and sailed around the seas west of Middle-earth, leaving his wife behind in Arvernien. At this time Elwing had in her possession the Silmaril that Beren had wrested from Morgoth. News of this came to the sons of Fëanor that were still living, and they attacked the people living in Arvernien, and slew most of them. But Elwing, rather than be captured, threw herself with the Silmaril into the sea. The Silmaril was not lost, however:

Hearing of the tragedy that had befallen in Arvernien, Eärendil then sought after Valinor, and he and Elwing found their way there at last. Eärendil thus became the first of all mortals to set foot in Valinor. Eärendil then went before the Valar, and asked them for aid for Men and Elves in Middle-earth, to fight against Morgoth; and the Valar accepted his plea.

The Valar, having listened to Eärendil's plea, went with a mighty host to Middle-earth, and overthrew Morgoth, and bound him. Eärendil took part in the battle, riding on Vingilot beside Thorondor and the Eagles. It was his blow that slew the great dragon Ancalagon and cast it down onto Thangorodrim, the event which, along with the sheer devastation caused by the War of Wrath, led to the Ruin of Beleriand.

Etymology
Eärendil is a Quenya name, meaning "Devoted to the Sea". However, Tolkien created the name based on Old English literature. Tolkien's himself states (Letters, 297) that the name is derived from the Anglo-Saxon éarendel. He says that he was struck by the "great beauty" of the name as early as 1913, which he perceived as "entirely coherent with the normal style of A-S, but euphonic to a peculiar degree in that pleasing but not 'delectable' language."

Inspiration
There is a poem by Tolkien dated to 1914 entitled The Voyage of Eärendel the Evening Star (published in HoME 2 267–269). Tolkien was also aware of the name's Germanic cognates (Old Norse Aurvandill, Lombardic Auriwandalo), and the question why the Anglo-Saxon one rather than the Lombardic or Proto-Germanic form should be taken up in the mythology is alluded to in The Notion Club Papers. The Old Norse together with the Anglo-Saxon evidence point to an astronomical myth, the name referring to a star, or a group of stars, and the Anglo-Saxon in particular points to the Morning Star as the herald of the rising Sun (in Crist christianized to refer to John the Baptist).

Tolkien was particularly inspired by the lines in Crist:

<blockquote>éala éarendel engla beorhtast / ofer middangeard monnum sended<br>
"Hail Earendel, brightest of angels / sent over Middle-earth to men."</blockquote>

which can be taken as the inspiration not only for the role of Eärendil in Tolkien's work, but also for the term Middle-earth (translating Middangeard) for the inhabitable lands.

The first line is paralleled by Frodo's exclamation in Cirith Ungol, "Aiya Eärendil Elenion Ancalima!" which is in Quenya and translates as "Hail Eärendil, brightest of stars!" Frodo's exclamation was in reference to the "Star-glass" he carried, which contained the light of Eärendil's star, the Silmaril.
Originally anchored off the island of Tol Uinen in the bay of Rómenna, it was later moved to the ports of Andúnië.
It was here that Túrin crossed the river and succeeded in slaying the dragon Glaurung, but while he lay insensible after that feat, his wife Níniel learned from the dying monster that she was Túrin's own sister Nienor. In dismay at this dreadful news, she cast herself into the chasm and was carried away by the river, and so the ravine gained its new name of Cabed Naeramarth, the "Leap of Dreadful Doom".

In his account of Arvedui's claim on Gondor's throne, Tolkien once mentions a body known as the Council of Gondor, that took authority over Gondor after the loss of Ondoher left it kingless. Except for the fact that it acted under the control of Steward Pelendur, we are told almost nothing of this Council or its normal function.

It was traditional among the Men of Númenor for the King to maintain a council of advisers, and it is not unreasonable to presume that their descendants in Gondor followed a similar system. The Númenórean 'Council of the Sceptre' was composed of nobles from each of the main regions of Númenor, together with the King's Heir. It is fair to assume, then, that Gondor's Council was made up from representatives of each of the South-kingdom's separate lands, probably in addition to the King's heir, and apparently the Steward as well.

The Council of Elrond was a council called by Elrond in Rivendell, in order to decide what should be done with the One Ring. Unlike in the movie adaption, those who attended were not summoned to Rivendell by Elrond, but came of their own accord for various reasons; presumably an instance where "Fate" intervened in The Lord of the Rings.

Those present at the Council had arrived at Rivendell by different paths and on separate errands, yet they were all ultimately concerned with the Ring and its effect upon the people of Middle-earth.

Important participants at the Council included:

* Elrond - convener
* Erestor - one of Elrond's advisors, and other minor councilors of Rivendell
* Gandalf - recently escaped from Saruman at Isengard
* Aragorn - having escorted Frodo and his companions from Bree
* Frodo Baggins, Hobbit - the Ring-bearer
* Bilbo Baggins, older cousin of Frodo, finder and former bearer of the Ring, long resident in Rivendell
* Boromir of Gondor - arrived in response to a prophecy
* Glóin of the Dwarves - arrived seeking counsel after a messenger from Mordor sought news of the Ring from the Dwarves
* Gimli the Dwarf, son of Gloin, accompanying his father
* Legolas, son of Thranduil, an Elf of the Woodland Realm - came to tell Elrond that Gollum had escaped from the Elves' captivity
* Glorfindel - a powerful Elf-lord of Rivendell, the famed Balrog-slayer of Gondolin
* Galdor of the Havens, a messenger of Círdan
* Samwise Gamgee - Frodo's companion; not invited, he secretly eavesdropped on the Council until he gave himself away

At the Council the full story of the Ring was told by Bilbo and Gandalf. Boromir was all for taking the Ring and using its power in the defence of Gondor, but Gandalf and Elrond were adamant that the Ring, having been forged by Sauron himself, would corrupt and ultimately destroy whoever tried to use it. Eventually Gandalf felt it necessary to employ shock tactics by reciting the Ring-inscription in the Black Speech, despite angering Elrond in the process.

Eventually it was decided that the only way to be free of Sauron and the Ring was to cast the Ring into the Crack of Doom in Mount Doom.

It then became necessary to decide who should take responsibility for such a perilous undertaking. Bilbo offered to finish the job he had started, but Gandalf told him he could not take back the Ring. Eventually Frodo surprised everyone including himself by telling them he would take the Ring. After some thought Elrond agreed. At this point Sam emerged from hiding and demanded to accompany Frodo, and since it was hardly possible to separate them Elrond agreed.

The matter of who else should accompany Frodo (later to be known as the Fellowship of the Ring, hence the title of the book and subsequent movie) was decided later, although the movie version of Peter Jackson's The Fellowship of the Ring depicts the choosing of the Fellowship as taking place at the end of the Council, and has Merry and Pippin also eavesdropping on the proceedings and demanding to accompany Frodo.
Cottar, the founder of the Cotton clan, was born some two hundred years before the War of the Ring. It was his grandson, Holman, who was the first to take the surname Cotton. 'Long Horn', as Holman was known, is also the first of the Cottons to be explicitly connected with the village of Bywater, which remained the seat of the family from that time on. Indeed, the name 'Cotton' means 'cottage town', and may actually be a reference to Bywater village.

Holman's son Tolman farmed the lands to the south of Bywater, and it was he who made the family one of the most important in the Shire. He played a significant part in the decisive Battle of Bywater, the most important step in the recovery of the Shire from Sharkey's Men, and his daughter Rose married Sam Gamgee in the following spring.
The Corsairs of Umbar were sea-raiders and pirates of the Haven of Umbar. Umbar was an old Númenórean haven settled by the "King's Men" — a proud faction loyal to the King and opposed to the divine authority of the Valar.

After the Downfall of Númenor, the Umbar settlers further descended into evil, and were called the Black Númenoreans. They took to pillaging and piracy along the coasts of Gondor. During the Kin-strife, the defeated rebels of Gondor fled to Umbar — by this time Umbar became the hated enemy of Gondor.

By the time of the War of the Ring, the Corsairs had mixed with the Haradrim, becoming a mixed people where Númenórean blood was mostly gone. During the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, a fleet of Corsairs was raiding Lebennin when Aragorn captured their ships and rowed them to Minas Tirith to relieve the siege of the city.
