Elendil was the father of Isildur and Anárion, a survivor of the Downfall of Númenor, and the founder and first High King of the Realms in Exile.

Elendil was also known as Elendil the Tall, as he was the tallest of the Men who escaped the Downfall. Accounts differ as to his exact height, but he was at least seven feet tall.

History
Elendil was born in Númenor. He was the son of Amandil, the last Lord of Andúnië and leader of the Faithful. He was probably named after his ancestor, Tar-Elendil, an ancient King of Númenor; his name also signified his and his family's devotion and friendship to the Elves as Elf-friends, preserving the old beliefs in Ilúvatar and reverence for the Valar. Like his father, he stood against the barbarous practices of Ar-Pharazôn the King and Sauron his advisor.

On the advice of his father, who foresaw the coming destruction of Númenor, Elendil put nine ships off the eastern coast and loaded all his people and possessions aboard them. Amandil then followed the actions of their ancestor, Eärendil and left Númenor attempting to warn the Valar of their King's folly.

When the catastrophic Downfall occurred in 3319, Elendil, his sons Isildur and Anárion, and their supporters fled to Middle-earth, sailing east in the nine ships. With them they took the palantíri, the "Seeing Stones" that were given to the Lords of Andúnië by the Elves of Tol Eressëa, the Sceptre of Annúminas, the Ring of Barahir, Narsil which Elendil kept as his sword, and a seedling of Nimloth, the White Tree of Númenor.

The ships became separated during the tumultuous voyage to Middle-earth; while Isildur and Anárion landed in the more southerly lands near the haven of the Faithful at Pelargir, Elendil and his people arrived at the northwest near Lindon. For this reason there were two kingdoms of the Númenóreans in exile, Arnor in the north and Gondor in the south. After Elendil finally landed in Middle-earth, he proclaimed an oath in Quenya: "Et Eärello Endorenna utúlien. Sinome maruvan ar Hildinyar tenn' Ambar-metta" ("Out of the Great Sea to Middle-earth I am come. In this place will I abide, and my heirs, unto the ending of the world"). His heir and great-grandson by 39 generations Aragorn II spoke these words again when he took up the crown of Gondor as King Elessar at the beginning of the Fourth Age.

Elendil founded the city of Annúminas in Arnor. His son Anárion established the city of Minas Anor in Anórien, and Isildur founded Minas Ithil in Ithilien. Elendil, however, ruled as High King. In both realms were built towers for the palantíri, with which the lords kept contact.

Sauron, having lost his shape in the Downfall of Númenor, returned to Middle-earth as a shadow and a black wind over the sea. It came to Mordor, next to Gondor, where Sauron wrought a new guise. In 3429 Sauron attacked, seizing Minas Ithil. Isildur fled north to his father, leaving Anárion in charge of Gondor. In response, Elendil formed an alliance with Gil-galad, the High King of the Noldor, to repel Sauron's assault. It is said that Elendil bound the Last Alliance with an oath and invoked the name of Eru to witness it.

The combined forces marched east to Imladris in 3431. In 3434, they passed the Misty Mountains and south together and fought in the War of the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. Elendil fought valiantly at the Battle of Dagorlad.

At the end of the long Siege of Barad-dûr, in the year 3441, Sauron came out to personally do battle. Gil-galad and Elendil fought Sauron and cast him down, but were both slain, and Elendil's sword Narsil was broken when he fell. Isildur used the broken sword to cut the One Ring from Sauron's hand. However, despite the urgings of Elrond and Cirdan, Isildur chose not to destroy the Ring at Mount Doom and was eventually betrayed by the Ring in the Disaster of the Gladden Fields, slain by Orcs.

Legacy
Elendil was a great warrior, a wise king, and a heroic figure among the Dúnedain. Isildur built a hidden tomb for his father on the summit of the beacon hill that was named Amon Anwar ("hill of awe" in Sindarin). Its presence was considered great enough to hallow the entire hill, even to the Rohirrim, who called it Halifirien ("holy mountain" in Rohanese).

After the founding of Rohan, the Steward Cirion moved Elendil's remains to the Hallows of Minas Tirith.

Millennia after Elendil's death, Aragorn, the Heir of Isildur, invoked the name of Elendil as a battle cry during the War of the Ring.

Etymology
Elendil.mp3
Elendil is Quenya for "Lover of the Stars".

For the Edain it was intended to signify "Elf-friend", (Nimruzîr in Adûnaic ), since they tended to confuse the Quenya element EL for both "Elf" and "star".
:In the film's prologue, Elendil is played by Peter McKenzie. Unlike in the books, Elendil is killed by a blow of Sauron instead of having a part in destroying him with Gil-galad. Instead, Isildur deals the fatal blow to the still-living Sauron by cutting off his fingers with the broken blade of Narsil, and, with them, the ring of power.
Arondir was born and grew up in Beleriand before its destruction. Arondir remained in the Southlands for 79 years. Ancrene Wisse: The English Text of the Ancrene Riwle is an edition by [[J.R.R.
Ancrene Wisse (sometimes also Ancrene Riwle) is early Middle English for "Anchoresses' Guide." It is a guide or set of rules for the lives of female religious recluses. There are several surviving manuscripts of this text. One of the most important of these, known as "MS CCCC 402", particularly interested Tolkien, and was the basis for this volume.

The book contains an introduction by N.R. Ker and a prefatory note by Tolkien, the main text is in Middle English, untranslated. It also presents on frontispiece two pages from the "MS CCCC 402" manuscript.

It was reprinted in 1997 in the original hardcover, and again in 2013 in white paperbacks.

William Morris was an English artist and author, who wrote and published poetry, fiction, and translations of ancient and medieval texts throughout his life. J.R.R. Tolkien was influenced by both the artistic and literary work of Morris.

Literary influence
Literary works by Morris, which Tolkien explicitly stated to have had an impact on his writing, are his translation of the Völsunga Saga,, and his novels The House of the Wolfings and The Roots of the Mountains. Tolkien also said in an early letter to Edith that he tried to use some of Morris's literary techniques when writing "The Story of Kullervo".

Furthermore, scholars have deduced possible implicit influences from these and several others of Morris's works: The Earthly Paradise (for The Book of Lost Tales), The Roots of the Mountains (for Gollum), The Wood beyond the World (for Lothlórien and Fangorn), and his translation of The Saga of Gunnlaug the Worm-tongue (for Gríma Wormtongue).

Artistic influence
In several illustrations, Tolkien was clearly inspired by the decorative style found in the Arts and Crafts Movement (of which Morris was the central figure and one of the founders) and the related Art Nouveau. The design philosophy of Morris was to re-introduce traditional craftsmanship by using simple forms and patterns and often medieval, romantic or folk styles of decoration (in reaction to early to the early modern industrial design), a theme which can be seen in some of Tolkien's illustrations from the late 1920s (see, e.g., 'Tol Sirion'), some of his paintings for The Hobbit, the ornamental patterns drawn in later years, and his hand-drawn maps of Middle-earth. It is known that Tolkien owned a copy of Morris' lecture Some Hints on Pattern Designing (1899). He must have wielded it with strength during the Nirnaeth Arnoediad or the Fall of Gondolin, for the Orcs named it "Beater", and fled before it. Even up until the late Third Age, orcs of the Misty Mountains knew of this legendary sword, so it must have done some damage.

The name most likely originated in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, where it is said that Turgon "hewed his way to the side of his brother". No other tales mention the actions of the sword, and it is unknown what happened to it during the Fall of Gondolin. Turgon perished as the Tower of the King fell on top of him, but of the fate of Glamdring nothing is told.

Survival
The sword survived roughly 6500 years from the Fall of Gondolin in 510 to its eventual rediscovery in 2941. In that period, it travelled from Gondolin far to the east. Much mystery surrounds this feat, but Elrond reasoned that Glamdring, along with Orcrist and Sting, was plundered again and again, or carried off to the Misty Mountains soon after the Fall of Gondolin. Thus, after surviving the deluge of Beleriand in the War of Wrath, it ended up in a Troll's cave in the Trollshaws of Eriador.

At Gandalf's side
In May 2941, Gandalf, Bilbo Baggins and a group of dwarves encountered three trolls in the Trollshaws - William, Bert and Tom. The Trolls captured Bilbo and the Dwarves, but Gandalf destroyed them by exposing them to sunlight. Glamdring, along with Orcrist and Sting, were found in their cave nearby. Gandalf claimed the weapon as his own, amazed by its appearance and inscription. The inscription was set in a script of runes Gandalf did not know; he needed the knowledge of Elrond for that. Elrond translated the runes and called it by its Mannish name: "Foe-hammer".

Gandalf would use the sword well; its first victim was the Great Goblin. Other Orcs fled as they recognized the sword as "Beater". This would have meant that either some Orcs were at the Fall of Gondolin (which is unlikely, given the short lifespan of OrcsCitation needed), or that they had legends about two glowing swords - Beater and Biter. Whether Gandalf used the sword again during the Quest for Erebor is uncertain, though it is likely that he wielded it in the Battle of Five Armies.

Gandalf bore Glamdring at his side when the Fellowship of the Ring left Rivendell in 3018. He used the blade during the Battle of the Chamber of Mazarbul, and a short time thereafter in the standoff with the Balrog, during which battle his staff was destroyed. After the collapse of the bridge, Gandalf and the Balrog fought on to the Endless Stair and Durin's Tower, with Glamdring being the only weapon known to be in Gandalf's possession.

Gandalf's body perished there but he was sent back because his task was not yet complete. He had Glamdring with him when he met the Three Hunters; he gave it to Háma at Edoras when asked to surrender it. Gandalf would continue to bear it throughout the War of the Ring, and carried it at his side when he, Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin arrived at the Prancing Pony in Bree. Gandalf and the Hobbits had seen so much war at the time that wearing a weapon did not seem odd.

Fate
On 29 September, 3021, Gandalf left Middle-earth and sailed into the West. Whether he took Glamdring with him is never mentioned, and is open to debate. It can be argued that he brought it over the Sea, as he did with Shadowfax, or that it was left behind in Middle-earth, weapons not being needed in the Undying Lands.

Appearance
Glamdring and Orcrist are described as having "beautiful scabbards and jewelled hilts". They would glow blue in the presence of Orcs. The "sword of Turgon" was "a white and gold sword in a ruel-bone (ivory) sheath".

When he took the sword, Gandalf said he could not read the runes. Elrond did, however, as he was a savant of all kinds of runes.

Etymology
Glamdring.mp3
Glamdring is Sindarin for "Foe-hammer". It is formed from the elements: glam, literally "shouting, confused noise", but used for any body of Orcs; and dring ("beat, strike").

The sword was also given the crude name Beater by the Orcs.

Other versions of the legendarium
In 1960, Tolkien began a complete rewrite of the Hobbit adding the fact that Glamdring was covered in dark blood when Gandalf found it, explaining why the runes were unreadable until cleaned by Elrond.

It is not explained in the published Hobbit why Gandalf could not read the runes. A fitting explanation would be the "Gondolinic Runes", devised by Tolkien in either 1924 or 1930. This set of Runes was first published in 1992..

:Gandalf acquires Glamdring in the trolls' cave. Elrond recognizes the sword at first glance; perhaps he simply deduces the fact that it was Glamdring because he had identified its mate Orcrist just before. After leaving Rivendell, Gandalf notably uses the sword only when rescuing Bilbo and the Dwarves from Goblin-town.

:On promotional art, Glamdring is portrayed as an ordinary longsword, with no inscription visible. In the movie itself, it goes unnamed, and is considerably shorter, only a one-handed sword. Oddly it is broken along with the Balrog's sword, but reappears intact in later scenes.
:Glamdring is a name given to the sword of Gandalf in the film's promotional materials, but it is not named in the films. The sword is, according to most replicas, 47 inches (approximately 120 centimeters) long, and does not glow blue. When asked, Peter Jackson and Philippa Boyens reacted jokingly that is was due to "budgetary cuts", and they had "not enough blue left".

:In the films, Glamdring is depicted as a longsword-type weapon. It has a straight, double-edged blade with a very short ricasso right above the crossguard. The crossguard's prongs flare upwards, and the center of the guard houses a decorative blue gem. The sword's grip is wrapped in blue, and the pommel is elongated, broadening at the bottom. The rune inscription is engraved in the cross-guard, and adds power to the sword. With this extra power Gandalf was able to defeat Durin's Bane. The actual inscription reads as thus:
::"Turgon aran Gondolin tortha gar a matha i vegil Glamdring gûd daedheloth, dam an Glamhoth".
:This is Sindarin, and translates to "Turgon, king of Gondolin, wields, has, and holds the sword Glamdring, Foe of Morgoth's realm, Hammer of the Orcs".
:Thorin finds several swords in the troll hoards and gives one to Gandalf. In Rivendell, Elrond identifies it as Glamdring, and in Goblin-town, the Great Goblin recognizes it as Beater. It has the same design as Glamdring in The Lord of the Rings films.
After Sauron had returned and become powerful Isildur summoned the Men of the Mountains to fulfill their oath to fight with Gondor in the upcoming war with Sauron. However, they refused, because they had worshipped Sauron during the Dark Years. As a consequence, Isildur cursed the King of the Mountains and his people to find no rest until their oath was fulfilled and said to the king that he would be the last king of his people. The Men of the Mountains fled and hid in secret locations in the mountains, did not have contact with other people and slowly dwindled. After their death their spirits found no rest and spread terror near the Hill of Erech and all places where they had lived.

The dead spirits of the Men of the Mountains haunted the caverns beneath the Dwimorberg and their wraiths appeared in the valley of Harrowdale that lay in the mountain's shadow in times of trouble and coming death and caused the local people to lock themselves in their houses in fear. They believed that the Stone had fallen from the sky. The wraiths of the dead also filled the population near the Hill of Erech with fear, who knew that the host of the wraiths was led by the King of the Dead.

In the time of King Arvedui of Arthedain a prophecy was made regarding the arising of the dead during the War of the Ring. In this prophecy the Stone of Erech was mentioned:

When the Grey Company came to Rohan the sons of Elrond brought with them a reminder of these words from their father to Aragorn, who acted upon these words to brave the Paths of the Dead.

During the War of the Ring, on 8 March 3019 Isildur's Heir, Aragorn passed through the Paths of the Dead with the Grey Company and commanded the Dead who lingered there to let them pass and to come to the Stone of Erech. The Dead followed him through the Paths of the Dead and the Blackroot Vale south of the White Mountains to the Stone of Erech. There Aragorn commanded the Oathbreakers to follow him to Pelargir and announced that he would hold the oath fulfilled when all the servants of Sauron have been removed from this land. The Dead fulfilled their oath and drove away the allies of Sauron through fear at the fords over the river Gilrain at Linhir on 11 March and at Pelargir on 13 March. In return for their aid, at the shore of the river Anduin at Pelargir, Aragorn held their oath as fulfilled, commanded them to never again trouble the valleys, to depart and to be at rest.

Etymology
The name Erech, like many names in Gondor, is of forgotten Mannish pre-Númenórean origin.

Other versions of the legendarium
In early manuscripts the Stone of Erech seems to be a Palantír, because Aragorn says that that there are other Stones in this ancient land and that one is at Erech after he had looked into the Stone (i.e. the Palantír) of Orthanc. In later manuscripts, a ring-wall existed around the Stone of Erech and a tower with a Palantír stood next to it. The last of these later manuscripts mentions that the Stone of Erech was brought from Númenor before its fall when its ships came to the western coasts of Middle-earth.
:The Stone of Erech is named Orossar and is reimagined as one of the seven Vandassari (Oath-stones in Quenya) brought from Númenor. They are the "seven stones" from the rhyme spoken by Gandalf, while the Palantíri are revealed to be the "seven stars". The stones had in them the power that made the oaths sworn in their presence more potent, and thus they were divided much like the palantíri (three to Arnor and four to Gondor) to make pacts friendship with the non-Dúnedain peoples of Middle-earth.
The Phial of Galadriel, or star-glass or Lady's glass, was the gift that Galadriel bestowed to Frodo Baggins.

History
Galadriel gave Frodo this gift upon the Fellowship's departure from Lothlórien. It would stay among his possessions unused until reaching the edge of Mordor.

Soon after the Breaking of the Fellowship, the night fell upon the Three Hunters, so Gimli wished that the Lady had given to them a light like Frodo's, but Aragorn remarked that Frodo would need it more.

As Frodo, Samwise Gamgee and Gollum approached the Stairs of Cirith Ungol, Frodo saw a great mass of cavalrymen led by the Lord of the Nazgûl. When the Witch-king stopped, Frodo feared they had been spotted; against his will, Frodo moves his hand towards the ring. Instead, he touched the phial - which he had forgotten - and the Witch-king continued on his way. The next morning, he made use of the phial again while leaving Minas Morgul behind.706-708

Frodo used the phial to fend off the attacks of Shelob, but he was eventually poisoned by her. Sam could defeat the spider thanks to the Phial, and escaped her lair after taking the star-glass with him, excusing himself to Frodo's body. Sam and Frodo later used it to overcome the will of the Two Watchers at the Tower of Cirith Ungol. Sam also attempted to use the light in the Crack of Doom, but the light from the glass faded because they were in the heart of Sauron's domain.

Upon Frodo's departure from Middle-earth, the light from the phial faded as it reached the shores of Eldamar.

Relation with Eärendil
Galadriel explained that her phial contained the light of the Star of Eärendil as reflected in her Mirror. As Sam remembered to Frodo, the light of this star was the same Silmaril recovered by Beren, now hold by Eärendil. This made them part of the great tales of the past.712

Thus, when Gollum led Frodo and Sam into Shelob's Lair, Frodo exclaimed in Quenya, "Aiya Eärendil elenion ancalima!", translating as "Hail Eärendil, brightest of stars!".
The talking purse was the purse of the troll William.

Fëanorian lamps were lamps which emitted a blue light from a flame from within a white crystal. They are described as "crystals hung in a fine chain net, the crystals being ever shining with an inner blue radiance". The lamps were created in Valinor and the flame could not be extinguished by wind or water. The Noldor were famous for the flames, but unfortunately the craft was lost with them. For example, in one version of the story, Túrin Turambar recognised the face of Beleg whom he had slain by the light of Gwindor's lamp; yet in the version included in the Silmarillion, it was lightning which revealed Beleg's face to Túrin.

A detailed description of the nature of the lamps is described in the early Lay of the Children of Húrin, when Belegs finds Gwindor in the forest of Taur-nu-Fuin after seeing his lamp shining in the distance:

{{blockquote|But little lanterns &nbsp;&nbsp;of lucent crystal<br />

This scene of Beleg finding Gwindor with one of these lamps was painted by J.R.R. Tolkien and published in Pictures by J.R.R. Tolkien (1979), no. 37.

Éalá Éarendel Engla Beorhtast is an early poem by J.R.R. Tolkien (according to Christopher Tolkien "the first of the mythology"271). It is published in full in The Book of Lost Tales Part Two.267-269

The poem was originally titled The Voyage of Éarendel the Evening Star (with the Old English version Scipfæreld Éarendeles Ǽfensteorran) and was written at Phoenix Farm in September 1914, inspired by a line from the Crist of Cynewulf. Under this title Tolkien read the poem at the Oxford Essay Club in the November of the same year, as referenced in Letter 2. By the latest revision, written at an unknown date but "substantially later" than the first, the newer title was given in its Old English form only. This Old English title was taken from the poem that inspired it, rendered in modern English as The Last Voyage of Eärendel.267

It was the first poem on the subject of Eärendil and describes his voyage from "Westerland", through "the darkling West" and ultimately beyond the world itself. The fourth verse describes the movements of the Sun and Moon in a way which anticipates cosmology of the The Hiding of Valinor and the The Tale of the Sun and Moon.

The poem
<poem style="font-style:italic; margin-left:20px;">Éarendel arose where the shadow flows
at Ocean's silent brim;
through the mouth of night as a ray of light
where the shores are sheer and dim
he launched his bark like a silver spark
from the last and lonely sand;
then on sunlit breath of day's fiery death
he sailed from Westerland.

He threaded his path o'er the aftermath
of the splendour of the Sun,
and wandered far past many a star
in his gleaming galleon.
On the gathering tide of darkness ride
the argosies of the sky,
and spangle the night with their sails of light
as the streaming star goes by.

Unheeding he dips past these twinkling ships,
by his wayward spirit whirled
on an endless quest through the darkling West
o'er the margin of the world;
and he fares in haste o'er the jewelled waste
and the dusk from whence he came
with his heart afire with bright desire
and his face in silver flame.

The Ship of the Moon from the East comes soon
from the Haven of the Sun,
whose white gates gleam in the coming beam
of the mighty silver one.
Lo! with bellying clouds as his vessel's shrouds
he weighs anchor down the dark,
and on shimmering oars leaves the blazing shores
in his argent-timbered bark.

Then Éarendel fled from that Shipman dread
beyond the dark earth's pale,
back under the rim of the Ocean dim,
and behind the world set sail;
and he heard the mirth of the folk of earth
and the falling of their tears,
as the world dropped back in a cloudy wrack
on its journey down the years.

Then he glimmering passed to the starless vast
as an isléd lamp at sea,
and beyond the ken of mortal men
set his lonely errantry,
tracking the Sun in his galleon
through the pathless firmament,
till his light grew old in abysses cold
and his eager flame was spent.</poem>
