When I found this wiki, I thought I could use my account (with the same name) that I use in other wikis. I was surprised when I wasn't recognised in this site. However, I managed to create a new account there using the same username. As I expected, the sum of 4000 edits I've made in the rest of the wikis isn't recognised there.

Later, I found an [http://lotr.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page other] LOTR wiki with less pages (about 3500) and less information than ours that recognises me. My question is: how a site that is a part of the wiki community can work like it is separate from it?--<tt>[[User:Odysseas-spartan-53|Odysseas]]-[[User talk:Odysseas-spartan-53|Spartan]][[Special:Contributions/Odysseas-spartan-53|53]]</tt> 08:44, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

:We are not part of wikia. lotr.wikia is. There are several wikis out there that aren't wikia (but now, only [http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Main_Page TF wiki] and [http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Portal:Main Memory Alpha] come to mind). -- {{User:Ederchil/sig}} 09:14, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

Nobody said that wikis belong to a monopoly or that Wikia should "own" the wikis of the world. For example Wikipedia is not a part of Wikia. It was not Wikia who invented wikis, it is just a service that '''provides''' wikis to its members who can't create a wiki on their own. But in reality anyone who wants, can create a wiki on his personal server with his own software and own rules. You can program your own wiki, own site, own forum or own blog, without being a member of a certain community. :::A Wiki is a piece of software that anyone can use; Wikipedia was the original, whilst Wikia is another. Wikia is different because that's the point of the organisation, to have a collection of different wikis in one big community. The '''One Ring''', also known as the '''Ruling Ring''' and the '''Great Ring of Power''', was an artifact created by the [[Dark Lord]] [[Sauron]] in the [[Second Age]] for the purpose of ruling over the [[Free Peoples]] of [[Middle-earth]], especially the [[Elves]]. The story of the quest to destroy the Ring is told in ''[[The Lord of the Rings]]'', as is most of the Ring's history.

== History ==
The One Ring was created by the Dark Lord [[Sauron]] during the [[Second Age]] in order to enlarge his own might by combining it with the power of the [[Elves|Elven]] smiths, and thus to give him control over the other [[Rings of Power]], which had been made by [[Celebrimbor]] and his people with Sauron's assistance. Sauron forged the One Ring secretly in the fires of [[Mount Doom]]. His will was then inside a Ring that could control the other Rings. Thus, he was more powerful than ever before when he wore the Ring, but became much weaker when he lost it. Though it appeared to be made of simple gold, the Ring was virtually impervious to damage, and could only be destroyed by throwing it into the pit of the volcanic [[Mount Doom]] in which it had originally been forged.

After its original forging, the Ring was cut from Sauron's hand by [[Isildur]], who lost it in the River [[Gladden]] just before he was killed in [[Third Age 2]]. The Ring remained hidden in the riverbed for almost two millennia, until it was discovered on a fishing trip by a [[Stoors|Stoor]] named [[Déagol]]. He was murdered by his cousin [[Sméagol]], who stole the Ring, and was changed by the Ring's influence over many ages into the creature known as [[Gollum]]. The Ring, which Sauron had endowed with a will of its own, manipulated Gollum into settling in the [[Misty Mountains]] near [[Mirkwood]], where Sauron was beginning to resurface. There he and it remained for nearly five hundred years, until the Ring tired of him and fell off his finger as he was returning from killing an [[Orcs|Orc]].

Bilbo found the Ring while he was lost in the caverns of the Misty Mountains, near Gollum's lair. After losing the [[Riddle-game]] to Bilbo, Gollum went to get his "[[Precious]]" (as he always called it) so he could kill and eat him, but flew into a rage when he found it missing. Deducing that Bilbo had it from his last riddle—"What have I got in my pocket?"—Gollum chased him through the caves, not knowing that the Hobbit had discovered the Ring's powers of invisibility and was following him to the cave's exit. Bilbo escaped Gollum and the Orcs who inhabited the Misty Mountains by remaining invisible, but left that part out of the story he told the [[Dwarves]] he was traveling with. Gandalf, who was also traveling with the Dwarves, later forced the real story out of Bilbo, and was immediately suspicious of the Ring's powers.

Gollum, meanwhile, eventually left the Misty Mountains to track down and reclaim the Ring. He wandered for decades, only to be captured and interrogated by Sauron himself, to whom he revealed the existence of Bilbo and the Shire.

In [[Third Age 3001]], following Gandalf's counsel, Bilbo gave the Ring to his nephew and adopted heir [[Frodo Baggins|Frodo]]. This first willing sacrifice of the Ring in its history sparked the chain of events which eventually led to its unmaking.

By this time Sauron had begun to regain his power, and the [[Barad-dûr|Dark Tower]] in Mordor had been rebuilt. In order to prevent the recapture of the Ring, Frodo and eight other [[Fellowship of the Ring|companions]] set out from [[Rivendell]] for Mordor in an attempt to destroy the Ring in the fires of [[Mount Doom]]. During the quest, Frodo gradually became more and more susceptible to the Ring's power, and feared that it was going to corrupt him. When he and Sam discovered that Gollum was on their trail and "tamed" him into guiding them to Mordor, he began to feel a strange bond with the wretched, treacherous creature, seeing a possible future of himself that he felt he had to save in order to save himself. Gollum gave in to the Ring's temptation, however, and betrayed them to the spider [[Shelob]]. Believing Frodo to be dead, Sam bore the Ring himself for a short time, and glimpsed its power, although he never gave in to it.

Sam rescued Frodo from a band of Orcs at the Tower of [[Cirith Ungol]] and returned the Ring to him, but feared that the toll it was taking was too great. It nearly was: although Frodo and Sam, followed by Gollum, eventually arrived at Mount Doom, Frodo decided to keep the Ring for himself rather than destroy it, evincing its corruptive nature. However, he was attacked by Gollum, who bit off the finger holding the Ring before falling into the fires of Mount Doom, finally destroying the Ring, and Sauron with it.

== Appearance ==
Physically the Ring resembled a geometrically perfect circle of pure gold, this perfection and purity being part of its allure. Unlike the lesser Rings, it bore no gem. It seems to have been able to expand and contract, in order to fit its wearer's finger or slip from it treacherously. Its identity could be determined by a simple (though little-known) test: when heated in fire, the following [[Ring Verse|inscription]] in [[Tengwar]] of the [[Black Speech]] of Mordor would appear on the Ring, a section of poetry from part of its lore:

==Effects==

There, if he managed to consciously subdue the Ring's will with his own, he could theoretically wield all the powers that Sauron had before he lost the Ring; notably, he could control and enslave the will of others. A side effect (but usually the first effect noticed) of the Ring was that it made the wearer invisible to physical beings like living [[Men]] (but highly visible to spiritual beings like the [[Nazgûl]]), dimmed the wearer's sight, and sharpened his hearing. This "shadow world" was the world the Wraiths were forced to live in always, but it was also a world in which the [[Calaquendi]] (Elves of Light) held great power: therefore [[Glorfindel]] was able to stay the [[Witch-king of Angmar|Witch-king]] at the [[Battle of Fornost]] and later again at the Ford of [[Bruinen]] at [[Rivendell]].

Part of the nature of the Ring was that it slowly but inevitably corrupted its wearer, regardless of any intentions to the contrary. Whether this was specifically designed into the Ring's magic or is simply an artifact of its evil origins is unknown. (Sauron might be expected to endow his One Ring with such a property, but he probably never intended anyone besides himself to wear it. It may be a side-effect of the portion of Sauron's will that lies within the Ring, influencing the wearer.) For this reason the Wise, including [[Gandalf]], [[Elrond]] and [[Galadriel]], refused to wield it in their own defence, but instead determined that it must be destroyed. It appears that Hobbits, being more pure of heart than Men, and far less powerful than Elves, were the ideal vessels to resist its seductive power; this explains why Frodo and Bilbo bore it for long periods of time with very little ill effect. Even Gollum had not turned into a Wraith after 500 years of bearing the Ring.

The enigmatic [[Tom Bombadil]] was unaffected by the Ring, or rather, the Ring had no effect on him. This may be explained in many ways. (See the [[Tom Bombadil|article on Tom Bombadil]], which includes some theories.)

It was founded in very ancient days by [[Durin the Deathless]]. [[Durin I|Durin]] woke at [[Mount Gundabad]] in the [[Misty Mountains]], who came upon a shimmering lake beneath the mountain [[Celebdil]], with a crown of stars reflected in its waters. He named that lake in the [[Dwarvish]] tongue, [[Kheled-zâram]], the [[Mirrormere]] and it remained a revered place among Dwarves of all houses ever afterwards. There in the caves above started the building of Khazad-dûm and also ''Dwarrowdelf'' by [[Men]], ''Hadhodrond'' by the [[Sindar]], and ''[[Casarrondo]]'' by the [[Ñoldor]].

Durin the Deathless thus became King Durin I of Khazad-dûm. Afterwards, other rulers of Khazad-dûm were sometimes named Durin, as they were considered to be his reincarnations, who the dwarves believed came to live again among [[Durin's folk|his people]].

As the millennia passed, the descendants of Durin sat upon the throne of Khazad-dûm, and their cavernous city became famous throughout the world. It even has a passing mention in [[Quenta Silmarillion]], the tale of the [[Elf-lords]] and their wars far to the west, though to them it was no more than a distant rumour they heard from the [[Dwarves]] of the [[Blue Mountains]] on their borders.

The [[Noldor]], out of [[Lindon]], founded a country of their own by the western gates of Khazad-dûm, [[Eregion]]. A rare friendship sprang up between the Dwarves and the Elves of this new land. Eregion's ruler, [[Celebrimbor]], helped to construct the famous and magical gate that became known as the [[West-gate of Moria]], and indeed went so far as to present King [[Durin III]] with a [[Rings of Power|Ring of Power]]. The friendship of Khazad-dûm and Eregion came to a sudden end, though, in II 1697, when [[Sauron]] overran the country of the Elves, and the doors of Khazad-dûm were sealed against his forces.

===Third Age===

Eventually, Sauron was defeated and Khazad-dûm continued to thrive. Most of its great wealth was based on the [[Mithril]] that was found in its mines, and as the centuries passed, the Dwarves mined deeper and deeper for the precious metal. In the year III 1980, they dug too deep, and unleashed a nameless terror from the depths beneath the city. The creature wreaked dreadful destruction, and in slaying the then King, [[Durin VI]], became known as [[Durin's Bane]]. In the following year, Durin's son, [[Náin I]], was also lost, and the Dwarves fled their ancient home.

After millennia as one of the richest cities in [[Middle-earth]], Khazad-dûm stood dark and empty, but for the brooding menace the Dwarves had released. In that time it was given a new name, [[Moria]], the [[Black Pit]].

The monster - a Balrog of [[Morgoth]], as was later known - lurked alone in Moria for nearly five hundred years. After that time, the old city of Khazad-dûm began to be peopled again, but not by Dwarves. Sauron directed his creatures there, and it began to fill with orcs and trolls. Though the orcs' numbers were greatly reduced in the [[Battle of Nanduhirion]], fought in the valley beneath Moria's [[East-gate]] in III 2799, the Balrog could not be bested, and Khazad-dûm remained a citadel of darkness.

===Recovery===
Several Dwarven generations later, there were two attempts by the Dwarves of Durin's line to reclaim their ancient home. The first of these was by [[Balin]], who had accompanied [[Bilbo Baggins]] on the [[Quest of Erebor]]; he led a [[Balin's Colony | colony]] of Dwarves there from [[Erebor]] in III 2989, but though he was successful at first, he was eventually defeated and slain. [[Balin]],

The story of the second attempt to recolonize the Dwarf-mansions is less clear, but it seems that sometime during the [[Fourth Age]], [[Durin VII]] became [[King of Durin's Folk]], and led a final return to the city. It seems he was successful, so that long after the War of the Ring, the Dwarves of Durin's line reclaimed their inheritance, and the hammers rang again in their great halls beneath the Misty Mountains until the race of Dwarves ended.

By the end of the [[Third Age]], at the time of the [[War of the Ring]], Moria had become a dark and cursed place. When [[Frodo Baggins]] set out from [[Rivendell]] with the [[Fellowship of the Ring|Fellowship]], they at first planned to travel over the Misty Mountains. When they were stopped by heavy snow on [[Mount Caradhras]], that was caused by [[Saruman]], they found themselves pursued by wolves and Orcs, and fled into Moria, so as to go under the mountains. There, they found Balin's journal in the [[Book of Mazarbul]] and learned the fate of his expedition. They were then set upon by a host of [[Trolls]] and Orcs, and they discovered that the terror was, in fact, a [[Balrogs|Balrog]] of [[Morgoth]]. [[Gandalf]] fought the Balrog on a narrow bridge and succeeded in destroying a section of bridge to make the Balrog fall. As it fell, the Balrog snagged Gandalf's leg with its whip of thongs and pulled him after it, sending them both plunging into the abyss spanned by the bridge. The rest of the Fellowship managed to escape Moria and reach [[Lórien in Middle-earth|Lórien]] mostly unharmed.

Unknown to the Fellowship, both Gandalf and the Balrog survived the fall and fought a ferocious battle from the depths of Moria to the mountains above, demolishing the top of the legendary [[Endless Stair]] and a part of the surrounding mountain peak in the process. Gandalf cast down the Balrog upon the mountainside and lived just long enough to see it die, but his story was not yet ended. (See [[Gandalf]]'s entry for further details.)

While Gandalf had felled the Balrog and some of the orcs of Moria died in the War of the Ring, Moria remained a place of evil creatures until the time of the last Durin.

===The Layout of Khazad-dûm===
Khazad-dûm was a huge array of chambers, passages, mines, halls, stores and pits. In general, areas were either classed as ''mines'' or ''city''. The mines were working sections of Khazad-dûm whilst the city was the area of habitation.

'''The city areas''' of Khazad-dûm were clustered mainly to the east; these were the oldest parts of the kingdom and had good access to the East-gate. They were structured into seven Levels and seven Deeps. The Levels stretched above the gate whilst the Deeps were set deeper within the mountain below the level of the East-gate. It is possible that the First Level (on which the East-gate was set) and the First Deep were highly intertwined.

The eastern section of the city spaces had also been delved in such a manner as to have light shafts to illuminate their chambers. One example of this is the [[Chamber of Mazarbul]] which was located on the eastern edge of the [[Seventh Level]].

'''The mine areas''' of Khazad-dûm were interlaced with the city spaces, but spread also westward toward the Western-gate. The mines ran deeper and further than any other tunnels within Khazad-dûm, and it is possible that more of the lower Deeps were given over to mining, although this is only conjecture.

The defined change between ''mines'' and ''city'' can be seen when the [[Fellowship]] pass through Moria - there is a marked difference between the early passages and chambers and those of the city structures illuminated by Gandalf.

Far below Moria, there are abysses, spaces and tunnels not known even by the Dwarves, but known by the Balrog. [[World-gnawing nameless things|Unknown beings]] gnaw the earth and make them, far from the knowledge of any lore.

:Well, at first I disagreed, but with the current reword it's fine. I removed the phrase "The circumflex ^ is used by Tolkien in Sindarin extra long vowels[2], but these words have not been attested in Sindarin." because there are plenty of those in Sindarin, even with the û - Udûn, for one. But properly sourced, it's good. Note that we're still working on referencing, but we pretty much agreed on [[User:Ederchil/Sandbox#LotR|these]]. Keep up the work - don't be shy, go ahead and completely rewrite an article instead of adding a couple of sentences if you think it needs it. I like it. My only concern is that perhaps references are overloaded and I would point your attention to some minimalism. There is no need to see everywhere "J.R.R. Tolkien" and "J.R.R. Tolkien, Christopher Tolkien (ed.)" again and again in almost every reference. I mean people knows who wrote them. After all, the wiki is about Tolkien. 
I am telling this because in a proposed guideline it was (by you?) mentioned that well-known facts need no referencing (like that Bilbo was a Hobbit). Same perhaps would apply to the References themselves.

As I'm working on the events in Arda I have created a Google Calendar in order to keep track of the many events in different years. I inserted the events between April 2009 and March 2010 (unfortunately Google doesn't offer a Shire Calendar^^) and included the year in the description (e.g. "3021 - Samwise returns to Bag End").

==History==
The Fellowship of the Ring was formed in [[Rivendell]] with the purpose to destroy the [[One Ring]] in any possible way. It was decided that nine walkers should contrast the [[nine riders]] of [[Sauron]].

The Fellowship had no stable plan. One option was to go directly to [[Mount Doom]], the other was to ask help from Boromir's father, [[Denethor II]]. Whatever the aim, the [[Ring-bearer]] should be Frodo and Gandalf was the leader.

The way of how to reach the East was a problem. After moving south from Rivendell, encountering crebain and wolves, they had to pass the [[Misty Mountains]]; Boromir proposed the [[Gap of Rohan]] (the way through which he arrived to Rivendell), Gandalf insisted to pass through [[Moria]] but [[Aragorn]] though the [[Redhorn Pass]] would be safer. However after attempting in vain to pass the blizzard, they followed Gandalf's opinion.

In Moria however, they found the Orcs who overran [[Balin]]'s colony years ago. They also saw [[Durin's Bane]], who devastated Moria in the first place. Gandalf to buy them time, destroyed the [[Bridge of Khazad-dûm]] and both [[Maiar]] fell together into the abyss, while the Company escaped back to the light.

Aragorn was appointed the head of the Company, and their next stop was to meet with [[Galadriel]] and [[Celeborn]], the elf lords of [[Lothlorien]]. They stayed there for several days, resting and counseling for their plan and route. On their leave, the elves gave them several useful [[gifts of Galadriel|gifts]] and gave them boats to sail the [[Anduin]].

Meanwhile, [[Saruman]] who served Sauron, sent a band of [[Uruk-hai]] to capture the [[halfling]] who bore the Ring and bring him to [[Isengard]].

Frodo began to realize the Ring was having a malevolent effect on some members of the party, especially Boromir, who tried to take the ring from him, after the passage through the [[Argonath]]. In the process, Frodo put on the ring to escape him, but he was followed by Sam. The rest of the Company was attacked by orcs while trying to find the [[Ring-bearer]]. The Orcs succeeded in capturing Merry and Pippin; Boromir fell defending them.

And so, the Fellowship was broken, but not yet disbanded.

:Well, at first I disagreed, but with the current reword it's fine. I removed the phrase "The circumflex ^ is used by Tolkien in Sindarin extra long vowels[2], but these words have not been attested in Sindarin." because there are plenty of those in Sindarin, even with the û - Udûn, for one. But properly sourced, it's good. Note that we're still working on referencing, but we pretty much agreed on [[User:Ederchil/Sandbox#LotR|these]]. Keep up the work - don't be shy, go ahead and completely rewrite an article instead of adding a couple of sentences if you think it needs it. I like it. My only concern is that perhaps references are overloaded and I would point your attention to some minimalism. There is no need to see everywhere "J.R.R. Tolkien" and "J.R.R. Tolkien, Christopher Tolkien (ed.)" again and again in almost every reference. I mean people knows who wrote them. After all, the wiki is about Tolkien. 
I am telling this because in a proposed guideline it was (by you?) mentioned that well-known facts need no referencing (like that Bilbo was a Hobbit). Same perhaps would apply to the References themselves.

As I'm working on the events in Arda I have created a Google Calendar in order to keep track of the many events in different years. I inserted the events between April 2009 and March 2010 (unfortunately Google doesn't offer a Shire Calendar^^) and included the year in the description (e.g. "3021 - Samwise returns to Bag End").

In Tolkien's writing, Orcs are described as humanoid, roughly human-sized, ugly and filthy. Although not dim-witted, they are portrayed as dull and miserable beings, who corrupt words (an insult to a philologist like Tolkien) and are only able to destroy, not to create. They have sour black blood.
Orcs are used as soldiers by both the greater and lesser villains of ''[[The Lord of the Rings]]'' — [[Sauron]] and [[Saruman]].
In Tolkien's [[Sindarin]] language, "Orc" is ''orch'', plural ''yrch''. In his late, post-''Lord of the Rings'' writings (published in ''[[The Peoples of Middle-earth]])'', he preferred the spelling "Ork", evidently mainly to avoid the form ''Orcish'', which would be naturally pronounced with the c as /s/ instead of /k/. (In [[Languages|Tolkien's languages]] the letter ''c'' was always pronounced /k/.) It is also possible that the word is a Common Tongue Version of 'orch', the [[Sindarin]] word for Orc. The original sense of the word seems to be "bogey", "bogeyman", that is, something that provokes fear, as seen in the Quenya cognate ''urko'', pl. ''urqui''.

Later under Morgoth's lieutenant, the necromancer Sauron, it has been suggested that Men were cross-bred with the Orcs. This process was later repeated during the [[War of the Ring]], creating the fierce Orcs known as [[Uruk-hai]].

Yet other Orcs may have begun as animals of vaguely humanoid shapes, empowered by the will of the Dark Lord (first [[Morgoth]], later Sauron): this may explain the references to their "beaks and feathers" in Tolkien's writings.

It is certain all Orcs were dependent on the Dark Lord in various ways: after their leader was defeated, the Orcs were confused and dismayed, and easily scattered by their enemies. In the millennia after Morgoth's defeat and banishment from Arda, they were without a leader they degenerated to small, quarrelsome tribes hiding in the [[Misty Mountains]]. Only when Sauron returned to power did they begin to reclaim some of their old power. The same happened after Sauron's defeat by the [[Last Alliance of Elves and Men]]: only when Sauron returned as the Necromancer of [[Mirkwood]] did the Orcs become a real danger for Middle-earth again.

It is interesting to note that to an extent, Tolkien did not regard Orcs as evil in their own right, but only as tools of Melkor and Sauron.
He wrote once that "we were all orcs in the [[World War I|Great War]]", indicating perhaps that an orc for him was not an inherent build-up of personality, but rather a state of mind bound upon destruction.

This change can be seen either as a part of the shift towards the use of Elvish words that occurred during the period between the writing of ''The Hobbit'' and the writing of ''The Lord of the Rings'', or a translation of the Hobbits' more colloquial manner (if we "accept" the books' authenticity and regard Tolkien merely as a translator). So essentially the race is correctly named "Orc", and "Goblin" is a colloquial "slang term" for Orcs used by Hobbits and sometimes picked up by Men and Elves. It is possible that "goblin" refers to the those of the orcish race who are not under the control of Sauron (or Morgoth), whereas using "orc" directly would refer to servants of (whichever) Dark Lord. Tolkien did mention several times that orcs were not inherently evil, something this theory would partly emphasize.

The original edition of the Hobbit and early drafts of ''The Lord of the Rings'' first used 'goblin' everywhere and used '[[Hobgoblins|hobgoblin]]' for larger, more evil goblins: when goblins were replaced with Orcs Tolkien invented the term [[Uruk-hai]] for his more evil Orcs.

Don't know when the next meeting will be, so I thought I'd post it here before I forget it. In the case of some categories - [[:Category:Images of Gothmog]] most notoriously - there's still some problem over disambiguation. Maybe all image categories should be renamed with the full pagename of the subject? Thus, [[:Category:Images of Boromir (Son of Denethor II)]] and such, rather than "Images of Boromir" - it is also handy when we would have a special box pointing to images - such as Wikipedia's interlinking with Wiktionary and Wikiquote, or Wookieepedia with quotes and images. :I suppose we should have some formal policy on multiple accounts. I should be able to change someone's username if they wish to change their name, so there really isn't much reason for someone to create two. I'd imagine the main perpetrators are bots in which case we can just ban their IP address if they do it continuously. As long as the user isn't switching back and forth between the accounts or creating them excessively there's probably not much harm.

The One Ring was created by the Dark Lord [[Sauron]] during the [[Second Age]] in order to enlarge his own might by combining it with the power of the [[Elves|Elven]] smiths, and thus to give him control over the other [[Rings of Power]], which had been made by [[Celebrimbor]] and his people with Sauron's assistance. Sauron forged the One Ring secretly in the fires of [[Mount Doom]]. His will was then inside a Ring that could control the other Rings. Thus, he was more powerful than ever before when he wore the Ring, but became much weaker when he lost it. Though it appeared to be made of simple gold, the Ring was virtually impervious to damage, and could only be destroyed by throwing it into the pit of the volcanic [[Mount Doom]] in which it had originally been forged.

After its original forging, the Ring was cut from Sauron's hand by [[Isildur]], who lost it in the River [[Gladden]] just before he was killed in [[Third Age 2]]. The Ring remained hidden in the riverbed for almost two millennia, until it was discovered on a fishing trip by a [[Stoors|Stoor]] named [[Déagol]]. He was murdered by his cousin [[Sméagol]], who stole the Ring, and was changed by the Ring's influence over many ages into the creature known as [[Gollum]]. The Ring, which Sauron had endowed with a will of its own, manipulated Gollum into settling in the [[Misty Mountains]] near [[Mirkwood]], where Sauron was beginning to resurface. There he and it remained for nearly five hundred years, until the Ring tired of him and fell off his finger as he was returning from killing an [[Orcs|Orc]].

As is told in ''[[The Hobbit]]'', Bilbo found the Ring while he was lost in the caverns of the Misty Mountains, near Gollum's lair. After losing the [[Riddle-game]] to Bilbo, Gollum went to get his "[[Precious]]" (as he always called it) so he could kill and eat him, but flew into a rage when he found it missing. Deducing that Bilbo had it from his last riddle—"What have I got in my pocket?"—Gollum chased him through the caves, not knowing that the Hobbit had discovered the Ring's powers of invisibility and was following him to the cave's exit. Bilbo escaped Gollum and the Orcs who inhabited the Misty Mountains by remaining invisible, but left that part out of the story he told the [[Dwarves]] he was traveling with. Gandalf, who was also traveling with the Dwarves, later forced the real story out of Bilbo, and was immediately suspicious of the Ring's powers.

Gollum, meanwhile, eventually left the Misty Mountains to track down and reclaim the Ring. He wandered for decades, only to be captured and interrogated by Sauron himself, to whom he revealed the existence of Bilbo and the Shire.

In 3001 of the [[Third Age]], following Gandalf's counsel, Bilbo gave the Ring to his nephew and adopted heir [[Frodo Baggins|Frodo]]. This first willing sacrifice of the Ring in its history sparked the chain of events which eventually led to its unmaking.

By this time Sauron had begun to regain his power, and the [[Barad-dûr|Dark Tower]] in Mordor had been rebuilt. In order to prevent the recapture of the Ring, Frodo and eight other [[Fellowship of the Ring|companions]] set out from [[Rivendell]] for Mordor in an attempt to destroy the Ring in the fires of [[Mount Doom]]. During the quest, Frodo gradually became more and more susceptible to the Ring's power, and feared that it was going to corrupt him. When he and Sam discovered that Gollum was on their trail and "tamed" him into guiding them to Mordor, he began to feel a strange bond with the wretched, treacherous creature, seeing a possible future of himself that he felt he had to save in order to save himself. Gollum gave in to the Ring's temptation, however, and betrayed them to the spider [[Shelob]]. Believing Frodo to be dead, Sam bore the Ring himself for a short time, and glimpsed its power, although he never gave in to it.

Sam rescued Frodo from a band of Orcs at the Tower of [[Cirith Ungol]] and returned the Ring to him, but feared that the toll it was taking was too great. It nearly was: although Frodo and Sam, followed by Gollum, eventually arrived at Mount Doom, Frodo decided to keep the Ring for himself rather than destroy it, evincing its corruptive nature. However, he was attacked by Gollum, who bit off the finger holding the Ring before falling into the fires of Mount Doom, finally destroying the Ring, and Sauron with it.

== Appearance ==
Physically the Ring resembled a geometrically perfect circle of pure gold, this perfection and purity being part of its allure. Unlike the lesser Rings, it bore no gem. It seems to have been able to expand and contract, in order to fit its wearer's finger or slip from it treacherously. Its identity could be determined by a simple (though little-known) test: when heated in fire, the following inscription in Elvish [[Tengwar]] letters of the Black Speech of Mordor would appear on the Ring, a section of poetry from part of its lore:

==Effects==

There, if he managed to consciously subdue the Ring's will with his own, he could theoretically wield all the powers that Sauron had before he lost the Ring; notably, he could control and enslave the will of others. A side effect (but usually the first effect noticed) of the Ring was that it made the wearer invisible to physical beings like living [[Men]] (but highly visible to spiritual beings like the [[Nazgûl]]), dimmed the wearer's sight, and sharpened his hearing. This "shadow world" was the world the Wraiths were forced to live in always, but it was also a world in which the [[Calaquendi]] (Elves of Light) held great power: therefore [[Glorfindel]] was able to stay the [[Witch-king of Angmar|Witch-king]] at the [[Battle of Fornost]] and later again at the Ford of [[Bruinen]] at [[Rivendell]].

Part of the nature of the Ring was that it slowly but inevitably corrupted its wearer, regardless of any intentions to the contrary. Whether this was specifically designed into the Ring's magic or is simply an artifact of its evil origins is unknown. (Sauron might be expected to endow his One Ring with such a property, but he probably never intended anyone besides himself to wear it. It may be a side-effect of the portion of Sauron's will that lies within the Ring, influencing the wearer.) For this reason the Wise, including [[Gandalf]], [[Elrond]] and [[Galadriel]], refused to wield it in their own defence, but instead determined that it must be destroyed. It appears that Hobbits, being more pure of heart than Men, and far less powerful than Elves, were the ideal vessels to resist its seductive power; this explains why Frodo and Bilbo bore it for long periods of time with very little ill effect. Even Gollum had not turned into a Wraith after 500 years of bearing the Ring.

The enigmatic [[Tom Bombadil]] was unaffected by the Ring, or rather, the Ring had no effect on him. This may be explained in many ways. (See the [[Tom Bombadil|article on Tom Bombadil]], which includes some theories.)

==Inspiration and Symbolism==

Although Tolkien always strongly held that his works should not be seen as a metaphor for anything, and especially not for the political events of his time (for instance WWII or the Cold War; note that much of ''The Lord of the Rings'' was written prior to and during World War II and well before the Cold War), many people have felt an urge to see the One Ring as a symbol or metaphor for various things. Among them are atomic energy and the atomic bomb, which would both be anachronistic, as the Ring was invented in the late 1930s, and the atom bomb did not become public knowledge until 1945. Other possible interpretations are that the ring represents the urge for power, which in Tolkien's view is always corrupting.

A recent interpretation by Danish author [[Peter Kjaerulff]] is that the Ring symbolises ''The Cursed Ring'', a device described by both Plato in his ''Republic'' (the Ring of Gyges), and in Richard Wagner's ''Ring'' operas, besides Tolkien. Although Tolkien denied any connection, it is certainly possible that the One Ring was inspired by the central artifact of Wagner's ''Der Ring des Nibelungen'' (''The Ring of the Nibelung''), without being meant to "symbolise" it.

The quest to destroy the One Ring is unusual in both folklore and literary epics. Quests to regain a treasure are common in folklore and literature. Tolkien described such a quest in ''The Hobbit'' to recover the treasure stolen from the [[Dwarves]] by the dragon [[Smaug]]. Quests to destroy a treasure are seldom the theme of folklore or literature.

A different way to look at this question is to ask what gives the idea of the Ring its power as a story element, without considering whether it was intended as a symbol for any one thing. The notion of a power too great for humans to wield safely is an evocative one, and already in the 1930s there were plenty of technologies available to make people think of that idea. The lure and effect of the Ring and its physical and spiritual after-effects on Bilbo and Frodo are obsessions that can be compared with drug addiction, for which the Ring serves as a powerful metaphor.

==Portrayal in Adaptations==
In [[Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings]], the wearer of the Ring is always portrayed as moving in a shadowy realm where everything is unclear and distorted. Neither [[Bilbo Baggins]] nor [[Frodo Baggins]] ever mentioned anything about this while using the Ring, but when Sam puts on the Ring at the end of ''[[The Two Towers]]'' he does experience something similar to this. This is the only time that this is mentioned in the books and could be attributed to Sauron's power increasing, and because Sam is within the borders of Mordor at the time he uses the Ring. Sam never wore the Ring in Jackson's movie.

The '''War of the Ring''' was the great conflict at the end of the [[Third Age]], named for the [[One Ring]] and the importance this had in the final outcome. The war was fought between the Free Peoples (a loose alliance of [[Elves]] and [[Men]] led by the Wise) and [[Sauron]] the [[Dark Lord]] of Mordor, with [[Saruman]] as a third power based in [[Orthanc]]. Sauron had been defeated in the [[War of the Last Alliance]], but because of Isildur's refusal to destroy the [[One Ring]], he was not entirely vanquished. He survived in spirit form, and the foundations of Barad-dûr were also not destroyed. While Sauron's spirit wandered the wastelands of Middle-earth for over 1000 years, eventually he rebuilt his power and became a threat once again.

Years before the War, while Sauron was known as the "[[Necromancer]]" and abode in [[Dol Guldur]], [[Gandalf]] knew that should Sauron return, he would use the power of the [[Smaug]], the last [[dragon]], who dwelt in [[Erebor]]. Gandalf persuaded [[Thorin Oakenshield]] that he should reclaim Erebor for his people. With the assistance of [[Bilbo Baggins]], Erebor was retaken and Smaug was finally killed by [[Bard]]. Most importantly, fate brought the [[One Ring]] into Bilbo's hands.

Saruman had claimed alliance with both the Wise and the Dark Lord, but was ultimately fighting for his own ends. In alliance with the [[Dunlendings]], and having Orcs at his own command, his objective was the defeat of [[Rohan]]. Until late in the War, he held the advantage, defeating Rohan twice at the [[Battles of the Fords of Isen]] which are considered the beginning of the War.

Sauron at all times held the military advantage in the War, due to his overwhelming forces; not only [[Orcs]] and [[Trolls]], but [[Men of Harad]] and the [[East]]. His main immediate object was the overthrow of [[Gondor]], his near neighbour and the strongest of his enemies. He had such forces at his command, though, that he was able to fight the war on many fronts, also attacking [[Dale]], [[Erebor]] and the [[Wood-elves]] in the far north, and [[Lórien]] from his secondary stronghold at [[Dol Guldur]]. There can be no doubt that, had the Wise not achieved possession of the Ring, Sauron would ultimately have been victorious.

The policy of the Wise was based around the [[Quest of Mount Doom]]; a company of nine under the leadership of [[Gandalf]] travelled from [[Rivendell]] with the [[One Ring]], with the hope of reaching [[Orodruin]] in [[Mordor]] and there destroying it. Because the Ring held much of Sauron's native power, they realised that in unmaking it, they would also defeat its creator.

Aragorn, after enlisting the help of [[Army of the Dead]], attacked the Corsair fleet at Umbar, an assault he had also carried out decades earlier, during the [[Surprise Attack on Umbar]].

The War did not end with the defeat of Sauron, for Saruman fled northward after the capture of Orthanc, and established himself in the Shire, bending the Hobbits to his will by threat of violence and the persuasive power of his voice. The return of Frodo Baggins and his companions led to a rebellion by the [[Shire-hobbits]], in which Saruman was killed by his servant, [[Gríma Wormtongue]].
