== History ==

Fingon went with his father and people from [[Aman]] to [[Middle-earth]] at the beginning of the [[First Age]]. He achieved renown soon after for his daring rescue of [[Maedhros]] from [[Thangorodrim]]. Fingolfin gave Fingon a domain in [[Dor-lómin]], in the west of [[Hithlum]], where he did good service during the [[Siege of Angband]]; defeating [[Orcs]] that attempted to go around to the north and attack Hithlum from the west, and then later the first to fight against the [[Dragons|Dragon]] [[Glaurung]] when he first came forth from [[Angband]].

Fingon became High King when Fingolfin died fighting [[Morgoth]] after the [[Dagor Bragollach]] ("Battle of Sudden Flame"). Seven years later, Morgoth's forces invaded Hithlum, and Fingon was hard-pressed and outnumbered, but rescued by [[Círdan]] and his people of the [[Falas]], who came up the [[Firth of Drengist]] in their ships.

In the complex [[Nirnaeth Arnoediad]] ("Battle of Unnumbered Tears"), Fingon was nearly victorious; but in the end he was finally defeated, and then killed by [[Gothmog (balrog)|Gothmog]], lord of [[Balrogs]].

Turgon became by right the High King of the Noldor, although after the battle he returned to the secrecy of [[Gondolin]].

Two hundred years after Gondolin was wrought, Ecthelion, Glorfindel and Egalmoth, along with the [[Aredhel|White Lady]] of the [[Noldor|Ñoldor]] left the [[Gondolin|Hidden City]] due to Aredhel's yearning for the freedom she once had in [[Valinor]]. Their orders were to lead her towards [[Hithlum]], where she would meet her elder brother [[Fingon]]. When coming upon the [[Ford of Brithiach]], Aredhel ordered them to turn South, for she desired to see the [[Sons of Fëanor]]. Thus Ecthelion and his companions sought admittance to [[Doriath]], but the wardens refused them entrance inside the [[Girdle of Melian]]. Having no other choice, they took the dangerous road between the haunted valleys of [[Ered Gorgoroth]]. Near [[Nan Dungortheb]], the Valley of Dreadful Death, the riders were caught in a mesh of shadows and they were lost from Aredhel. In vain they sought her afterwards, but the fell offsprings of [[Ungoliant]] that dwelt in that place pursued them. Barely escaping alive, the three lords returned to Gondolin without the princess, where they were received in sorrow.

===Lord of Gondolin===

In the year {{FA|472}} Ecthelion fought alongside Turgon in the battle Nirnaeth Arnoediad, leading a wing of Gondolin's forces. Upon the defeat of the Ñoldor, he defended a flank as Turgon retreated. Surviving the disastrous battle, Ecthelion returned towards the Hidden City where he next appeared as Warden of the Great Gate in the ''[[Unfinished Tales|unfinished tale]]'' [[Of Tuor and his Coming to Gondolin]].

Twenty-three years after Nirnaeth Arnoediad, [[Tuor]] and [[Voronwë]] traveled towards the Hidden City. After being led by [[Elemmakil]] through the [[Seven Gates of Gondolin|Seven Gates]], Ecthelion appeared before them. In a short description he is portrayed as great and lordly, all clad in silver and having a bright glance. Upon his helm there was a spike with a diamond point which shimmered as "a thousand studs of crystal". At first denying passage for Tuor, he allows it after the later makes a reference towards [[Ulmo]], by saying that the Lord of the Fountains will not oppose the Lord of the Waters.

The House of the Fountain was one of the [[Twelve Houses of the Gondolindrim]] whose leader was Ecthelion. Its people found delight in diamonds and the silver of their arrays was most beautiful to the sight. In the Fall of Gondolin, Ecthelion led them into battle accompanied by the music of their flutes and great were the damages caused to the enemy by their long, bright swords.

===Warcry to the Eldar===

In the battle over Gondolin, Ecthelion and his forces made their entrance from the South part of the city, after previously being held in reserve. So terrible was his voice when commanding the drawing of the swords and the killings which followed, that his name became a terror among the enemy and a Warcry to the Eldar. Valiantly fighting side by side with Tuor and his [[House of the Wing]], they drove away the orcs until almost the Gate was regained. As [[Dragons]] reinforced [[Morgoth]]'s army, Ecthelion killed three [[Balrogs]] and his sword did "hurt to their fire". Outnumbered, they had to retreat. When doing so, Ecthelion's left arm was wounded and his shield fell to earth. Tuor carried him away as they joined the remaining leaders in the [[Square of the King]].

In that place the great [[Fountain of the King]] stood and Ecthelion regained his strength by drinking from it. As seven dragons lead the enemy's forces towards the Square, the remaining army of Gondolin began retreat. All but Ecthelion, who remained near the fountain in a stand which was remembered as the most valiant "in all the songs or in any tale". It was there that he faced Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs.

===Slayer of Gothmog===

Tuor tried to stand in the way of Gothmog, but he was thrown aside. Then Ecthelion, fairest of the Noldor, but whose face now had the pallor of grey steel, dueled him. Losing his sword due to a wound received he was unable to protect himself. Just as Gothmog was about to deliver the finishing blow, Ecthelion jumped and wrapped his legs around the demon, driving the spike of his helmet into Gothmog's body. This caused Gothmog to lose his balance, and he, along with Ecthelion, fell into the Fountain of the King. Gothmog's fire was thus quenched, but Ecthelion also drowned with him and found his death in cool waters, whose Lord he was.

Later, a young [[Eärendil]] asked about him, saying that he wished Ecthelion were there, "to play to me on his flute, or make me willow whistles! Perchance has he gone on ahead?" After he was informed of Ecthelion's death he "wept bitterly" and said that he cared no more to see the streets of Gondolin.

==Other Versions of the Legendarium==
Perhaps the earliest [[J.R.R. Tolkien]] writing, [[The Fall of Gondolin]] was written during a leave of absence from the [[World War I]], in the year 1916. It is in that story, published posthumously by [[Christopher Tolkien]] in the volume ''[[The Book of Lost Tales Part Two]]'' that Ecthelion first appears. Thus he is one of the first characters Tolkien ever created.

However, from a chronological point of view, the first account of his presence is the chapter [[Of Maeglin]] from ''[[The Silmarillion]]''. The events described here took place more than one hundred and fifty years before those of Gondolin's fall. Along with [[Glorfindel of Gondolin|Glorfindel]] and [[Egalmoth]], he was assigned by [[Turgon]] as [[Aredhel]]'s escort on her ill-fated journey. Though no name is mentioned, only that "Turgon appointed three lords of his household", an explanatory note in the volume ''[[ The War of the Jewels]]'', chapter called [[Maeglin (chapter)|Maeglin]], sheds light on the escorts' identities.

==Etymology==
There are three different sources that offer a translation of ''Ecthelion'' and they all differ substantially. In ''The Book of Lost Tales Part 2'', Appendix, it is said that the name derives from the [[Quenya]] ''[[ehtelë]]'', "issue of water, spring", a reference to his title as Lord for the House of the Fountain. In [[The Etymologies]], volume ''[[The Lost Road and Other Writings]]'', his name is composed from ''[[ehtë]]'', "spear" and ''[[thela]]'', "point" (of spear). Put together they would translate as "Spear-point" or "Spear-head". In ''[[The War of the Jewels]]'', which seems to be the last matter J.R.R. Eöl was originally part of the royal house of King [[Thingol|Elu Thingol]]. Eöl was unhappy in his homeland of [[Doriath]], and when the [[Girdle of Melian]] was raised around the kingdom, he left to dwell in the dark forest of [[Nan Elmoth]], east of his homeland.

Eöl was a skillful craftsman and master sword smith. Among his greatest works were two swords made from the iron of a meteorite, [[Anglachel]] and [[Anguirel]]. Anglachel he gave to Thingol as payment for dwelling in Nan Elmoth, and it would later become the sword borne by [[Túrin|Túrin Turambar]]. Eöl's smith craft was especially admired by the [[Dwarves]], and he shared a rare friendship with the Dwarves of [[Nogrod]] and [[Belegost]] in the [[Blue Mountains]]. Eöl also devised the metal known as [[galvorn]], from which he forged the armor that he used when traveling far from Nan Elmoth.

In the early third century of the First Age, Eöl came upon [[Aredhel]], the sister of King [[Turgon]] and called the [[Aredhel|White Lady]] of the [[Noldor|Ñoldor]]. She had become lost in Nan Elmoth, and Eöl used his enchantments to draw her deeper into the wood and ensnare her. She became his wife, and in the year 320 bore him a son, [[Maeglin]].

In the summer of {{FA|345}}, Eöl travelled into the Blue Mountains to feast with the Dwarves of Nogrod, and returned home to find that his wife and son had left two days earlier. Mounting a horse, he gave chase. Along the way he was waylaid and taken before Curufin who counseled him to stop his chase predicting his death should he continue. He eventually discovered them at the [[Ford of Brithiach]]. Realizing that Aredhel was returning to Gondolin with his son, Eöl followed them. He found his way to the [[Dry River]], and that secret way led him to the gates of Gondolin itself. There he was captured and taken to the King.

Turgon at first welcomed Eöl as a kinsman, but under the King's Law one who had found the way to the [[Gondolin|Hidden City]] was not permitted to leave, on pain of death. Enraged at the loss of his freedom, Eöl chose death, for himself and his son, and cast a poisoned javelin at Maeglin. Aredhel stepped in front of her son, and the poison in the dart soon killed her. In punishment for his crime, the [[Gondolindrim]] cast Eöl over the steep cliff of the [[Caragdûr]].

Aredhel had left Gondolin to wander through [[Beleriand]], and in the woods of [[Nan Elmoth]] she met [[Eöl]], and stayed with him, eventually giving birth to Maeglin. The child grew up hearing tales of Gondolin, the Hidden City and his uncle, Turgon, most importantly that he had no heir to the throne, thus the idea of leaving the dark places of Nan Elmoth was born in his mind. Years later Aredhel left Eöl and she took her son (who stole his father's sword, [[Anguirel]]) with her, both of them returning to Gondolin. Eöl had followed her, and in judgment before [[Turgon]] he attempted to kill Maeglin with a poisoned dart, but hit Aredhel instead. She died, and Eöl was cast down to his death from the city walls, under Maeglin's eyes.

He was now an orphan, but Turgon held him in honor, and Maeglin both learned and taught much. He became an elven lord held in high esteem, even leading his own [[House of the Mole]]. He found rich lodes of metals in the [[Echoriath]] surrounding the city, and forged weapons of steel stronger than had been seen before. His mine in the Echoriath was named ''[[Anghabar]]'', Iron-Mine. In the [[Nirnaeth Arnoediad]], "Battle of Unnumbered Tears", Maeglin refused to remain behind as regent, and went forth to battle with Turgon proving valiant at need, though he was wise in council as well. The seventh and final gate of Gondolin, the [[Gate of Steel]], was Maeglin's creation.

Even though he was one of the mighty of Gondolin, he most desired Turgon's daughter [[Idril]] who was his first cousin. But there was no hope for him, as the "[[Eldar]] wedded not with kin so near". More over, Idril perceived an evil coming from him and for as long as Gondolin existed, she avoided him. Thus the love inside Maeglin's heart turned to darkness and though he had neither her nor the kingship of Gondolin, he endured it in silence, waiting for an opportunity to seize them both.

===The Fall of Gondolin===

When [[Tuor]] came, carrying [[Ulmo]]'s warning of the danger to Gondolin, Maeglin sat on the right hand of Turgon and argued against Tuor. Tuor's marriage with Idril further incensed Maeglin, who rebelled against Turgon and Tuor. Later, seeking after metals, Maeglin defied Turgon's order to stay within the mountains, and was captured by [[Orcs]] and brought to [[Angband]]. [[Morgoth]] promised both Gondolin and Idril in return for the location of the hidden city, thus luring Maeglin into the greatest treachery done in the [[Elder Days]]. He gave him a token that would allegedly keep him safe from the sack.

Maeglin returned to Gondolin saying nothing about his encounter, but many people noticed a change. Most thought it was for the better, though Idril suspected something and began work on [[Idril's Secret Way]]. He managed to turn some of the weaker lords, such as [[Salgant]] and the roguish to his side. When the hosts of Morgoth surrounded the city, Maeglin counseled Turgon against flight, and because of his place in the King's heart he swayed him to his advantage. As the battle over Gondolin took place, Maeglin tried to kill [[Eärendil]] and take Idril for himself. But Tuor caught up with him and they fought upon the walls of the city. Maeglin lost and he was thrown down to his death.

Tuor was thrall in the House of [[Lorgan]], chief of the Easterlings of Dor-lómin, for three years. He was treated harshly because Lorgan knew of his lineage, but nevertheless endured the torment until he found his opportunity to escape. Upon being sent into the woods on an errand he slew his guards and, escaping pursuit, returned to the caves of Androth. There he dwelt alone as an outlaw, slaying many Easterlings and accumulating a large price on his head. He was seeking the Annon-in-Gelydh – the 'Gate of the Noldor' through the [[Ered Lómin]], by which Annael had intended to escape Hithlum unnoticed. After four years of searching the [[Valar|Vala]] [[Ulmo]] sent Tuor a sign that finally led him to the Gate of the Noldor. Upon reaching its entrance Tuor met [[Gelmir (messenger of Círdan)|Gelmir]] and [[Arminas]], messengers of [[Círdan]] who were seeking a way to [[Gondolin]], and they showed him the path through the mountains to [[Nevrast]].

In {{FA|495}} Tuor passed through Nevrast and became the first Man to reach the shores of [[Belegaer]], the Great Sea, and felt for the first time the [[sea-longing]] that would stay with him the rest of his life. He lingered by Belegaer until the autumn, and then after receiving another sign from Ulmo followed seven [[swans]] southward. These led him to the abandoned city of [[Vinyamar]] where long ago Turgon had dwelt and, at the behest of Ulmo, left a sword, armour and a shield bearing the device of a white swan on a blue field. Tuor took these arms and made his way to the shore. Then during a great storm the Lord of Waters finally appeared to Tuor directly, ordering him to seek the city of Gondolin, and giving him a cloak that had a power to hide him from foes. The next morning he met [[Voronwë]] – an elf of Gondolin who had been shipwrecked off the coast of Beleriand and rescued and brought to Vinyamar by Ulmo. Voronwë led Tuor through [[Núath]], a land desolated by the recent passing of [[Glaurung]] the Dragon to [[Nargothrond]]. At the [[Pools of Ivrin]] Tuor caught a brief glimpse of his ill-fated cousin [[Túrin]], son of Hurin, as he cried for [[Finduilas]] – the only time their two paths ever crossed. Then after enduring a [[Fell Winter (First Age)|bitter winter]] Tuor and Voronwë finally reached the gate of Gondolin. They were taken as prisoners by [[Elemmakil]] and brought before [[Ecthelion|Ecthelion of the Fountain]] who, recognising from his arms that Tuor had been sent by Ulmo, welcomed into the city with honour. Tuor then came before before the [[High King of the Noldor|High King]] Turgon and delivered the message of Ulmo: the [[Doom of Mandos]] was nearing its fulfilment and Turgon should abandon his city and retreat to the Havens of Sirion.

But in {{FA|510}} Gondolin's secrecy finally failed. First Húrin, Tuor's uncle, released from Morgoth's long torment and attempting to enter the city, revealed its location in the [[Encircling Mountains]]. Still Morgoth would not have found an entrance to the city were it not for the treachery of Maeglin, who having defied the King's order and ventured outside the encircling mountains was captured by Orcs and brought to Angband – there he betrayed Turgon in return for the promise of the lordship of Gondolin and the possession of Idril.

During the subsequent [[Fall of Gondolin|siege]] Tuor fought valiantly. He rescued Idril from Maeglin, throwing the Dark Elf from the walls of the city to his death. But in the end Gondolin fell and Turgon was killed. Tuor and Idril led the survivors of the sack in a desperate escape through the [[Idril's Secret Way|secret way]] Idril had prepared and over the mountains. Protected by Ulmo they journeyed down the vale of [[Sirion]] to the Havens at its mouth – the last refuge of the Elves of Beleriand. Tuor and Idril dwelt for a while at the Mouths of Sirion. But eventually the sea-longing that had been instilled in him when he first came to the shores of Belegaer grew too strong. The only 'complete' source on Tuor therefore remains the very early ''[[The Fall of Gondolin]]'', written while Tolkien was on sick-leave from the army in [[1917]] and later incorporated into ''[[The Book of Lost Tales]]''. In this version nothing is said about Tuor's early life and lineage, though later he introduces himself to the [[Gondolindrim|Gondothlim]] as "Tuor son of [[Peleg]] son of [[Indor]] of the [[house of the Swan]] of the sons of the Men of the North". He is described as a hermit ("Tuor of the lonely heart") living in the woods of Mithrim who simply happened upon the Gate of the Noldor and so came to live in a cave by the sea. Ulmo—employing swans, which Tuor as in later versions took as his emblem—then guided Tuor from the shores of the sea to a group Noldor, who took him through the fenland region of [[Arlisgion]] and hence to the [[Nan-tathren|Land of Willows]]. Here Tuor would have stayed, but Ulmo appeared to him directly and ordered him to seek Gondolin. In this version he did not receive his arms from Turgon until he reached Gondolin.

Conversely Tuor's years in Gondolin are described more fully in the ''Lost Tale'' than in any subsequent text. He bore an axe called [[Dramborleg]] and is said to lived in a house on the southern wall of the city. He is also named as the leader of one of twelve Houses of Gondolin, the [[House of the Wing]], whose emblem was the wing of a swan or gull. Tuor's deeds in the [[Fall of Gondolin|battle for the city]] are also given. After rescuing Idril and [[Eärendil|Eärendel]] from the treacherous [[Maeglin|Meglin]], and leaving Voronwë to guard them, he and his company made their way to the battle at the gate. Here they fought alongside [[Ecthelion|Ecthelion of the Fountain]] as [[dragons]] pulled down the walls of the city and enemies poured in. Tuor is said to have slain three [[orcs|orc-lords]]: [[Othrod]], [[Balcmeg]] and [[Lug]]; as well as five [[balrogs]]. Eventually however he was forced to retreat bearing the injured Ecthelion. After being rescued by [[Galdor of the Tree|Galdor]] in the [[Square of the Folkwell]], he rallied what remained of the defenders of the city and made for the [[Square of the Palace of Turgon|King's Square]]. [[Glorfindel]] slew the balrog but was himself killed when its body fell on him.

The ''Fall of Gondolin'' ends with Tuor, Idril and Eärendel living at the Mouths of Sirion, however in Tolkien's notes for what was to be the next chapter of ''The Book of Lost Tales'' he mentions that Tuor disappeared while at sea.<ref name="LT2Earendel">{{HM|LT2}}, "[[The Tale of Eärendel]]".</ref>

Idril Celebrindal was the only child of Turgon. She participated in the [[Flight of the Noldor]], and in the [[Helcaraxë]] almost lost her life falling through the ice with several others, but Turgon saved her,{{fact}} though he lost his wife Elenwë. Together with [[Angrod]]'s son [[Orodreth]] she was one of the two Noldor in the third generation to come into exile. Idril was loved in secret by her cousin [[Maeglin]], the son of [[Eöl]] the Dark Elf and [[Aredhel]], Turgon's sister, but she scorned his advances because of his dark character, and the fact they were too closely related.

When Tuor, son of [[Huor]] arrived in [[Gondolin]], Idril fell in love with him. Because Turgon had grown to love Tuor as a son (as he had his father before), and remembering the last words of Huor, he allowed Idril and Tuor to wed, thus bringing about the second union of the [[Eldar]] and [[Edain]], after [[Beren]] and [[Lúthien]]. Idril encouraged Tuor to build the secret passage known as [[Idril's Secret Way]], and thus enabled many to escape the [[Fall of Gondolin]]. In Gondolin she had a son, [[Eärendil]].

After the fall of Gondolin, Idril and Tuor became leaders of the exiles at the [[Havens of Sirion]], where they also received [[Elwing]] daughter of [[Dior]] son of Beren and Lúthien.

When Tuor grew old he departed in his ship for the [[Aman|West]], and Idril went with him. It is believed by the Elves and [[Dúnedain]] that Idril and Tuor arrived in Valinor, bypassing the [[Ban of the Valar]], and that Tuor became reckoned in the kindred of the Elves, so that they both live in [[Valinor]].

She was tall and strong, fond of hunting and riding in the forests. Her skin was pale and her hair dark; she always wore silver and white. She was fond of the sons of [[Fëanor]], especially [[Celegorm]] and [[Curufin]].

==History==

Aredhel would have been born to [[Fingolfin]] and [[Anarië]] in [[Valinor]]. She would have followed her father and brothers over the [[Helcaraxe]] to Middle Earth.

After arriving in [[Middle-earth]], she dwelt for a time in [[Nevrast]] with her brother Turgon. When he built the hidden city of [[Gondolin]] she went with him. But after two hundred years the longing for the forests and wide lands overcame her, and she asked her brother if she could leave. Turgon was unwilling to let her go because he feared for her safety and her telling someone the location of his kingdom. She eventually left with a small company where they were refused refuge in Doriath because they were [[Noldor]]. They instead travelled to find refuge in the North but upon getting lost in the dangerous region of [[Nan Dungortheb]] and unable to find her company, she wandered until she reached [[Himlad]] where she waited to see her cousin [[Celegorm]] but he never turned up because he too was travelling. She eventually got bored and wandered into the forest of [[Nan Elmoth]].

The ruler of those dark woods was [[Eöl]] the [[Dark Elf]] who saw her and fell in love with her. He put an enchantment on her which caused her to wander deeper and deeper into the woods until she couldn't find her way out. Eöl soon went to her and took her to the safety of his home where she stayed for many years. They eventually married and had a son named [[Maeglin]]. Aredhel would often speak of her old life and home and wished to go back to see her people again but Eöl forbid them from even contacting the Noldor again or even mentioning the sons of Fëanor. She waited until Eöl went out and she fled Nan Elmoth with her son to Gondolin. She was reunited with her brother Turgon and they were welcomed. It wasn't until Eöl was found and brought before the King that they realised he had followed them. Turgon was willing to spare Eöl but Eöl would not accept this judgement and he attempted to kill his son. Aredhel stepped in front of Maeglin and was wounded. While she lay resting, she spoke to her niece Idril and begged her to make sure Turgon shows mercy on Eöl but she died in the night. The wound from the weapon was only small but it was also poisoned. Because of this Turgon no longer cared for Eöl and in his grief, he had him thrown over the city walls to his death.

Although Turgon was originally against the departure of the Ñoldor from [[Aman]], he eventually did set out on the journey. After [[Fëanor]] and his sons departed using the only ships, he took his people across the dangerous [[Helcaraxë]] with his father Fingolfin. He lost his wife [[Elenwë]] in the crossing and settled at [[Vinyamar]] in [[Nevrast]].

When he journeyed with his cousin [[Finrod|Finrod Felagund]] along [[Sirion]], [[Ulmo]] sent both of them a dream to look for a hidden place where they could be safe from the power of [[Morgoth]]. Then in the following year Ulmo appeared directly to Turgon and guided him to the vale of [[Tumladen]] in the [[Encircling Mountains]]. Initially, Turgon left Tumladen and returned to Vinyamar, keeping his discovery a secret for many years. After the [[Dagor Aglareb]], Turgon began once again to feel the restlessness set in his heart by Ulmo, and his thought turned to Tumladen. He secretly moved many of the most skilled Ñoldor to the valley, and had them build [[Gondolin]]. When it was completed, he abandoned Vinyamar with his people and led them to Tumladen in secret, hidden by the power of Ulmo. Before leaving, however, and following Ulmo's profecy, he left in Vinyamar a sword, mail and helm for one who would come in the hour of direst need of the Noldor and deliver hope. <ref>{{S|15}}</ref>

Fingon went with his father and people from [[Aman]] to [[Middle-earth]] at the beginning of the [[First Age]]. He achieved renown soon after for his daring rescue of [[Maedhros]] from [[Thangorodrim]]. Fingolfin gave Fingon a domain in [[Dor-lómin]], in the west of [[Hithlum]], where he did good service during the [[Siege of Angband]]; defeating [[Orcs]] that attempted to go around to the north and attack Hithlum from the west, and then later the first to fight against the [[Dragons|Dragon]] [[Glaurung]] when he first came forth from [[Angband]].

Fingon became High King when Fingolfin died fighting [[Morgoth]] after the [[Dagor Bragollach]] ("Battle of Sudden Flame"). Seven years later, Morgoth's forces invaded Hithlum, and Fingon was hard-pressed and outnumbered, but rescued by [[Círdan]] and his people of the [[Falas]], who came up the [[Firth of Drengist]] in their ships.

In the complex [[Nirnaeth Arnoediad]] ("Battle of Unnumbered Tears"), Fingon was nearly victorious; but in the end he was finally defeated, and then killed by [[Gothmog (balrog)|Gothmog]], lord of [[Balrogs]].

Turgon became by right the High King of the Noldor, although after the battle he returned to the secrecy of [[Gondolin]].

Fingolfin was the strongest and most valiant of the sons of Finwë. <ref>{{S|5}}</ref> Having different mothers, he and his older half-brother Fëanor never felt a close bond with each other. This lack of affinity developed into rivalry when [[Morgoth|Melkor]] secretly told each of them that the other was planning on driving them out of [[Tirion]]. During the days of the [[Two Trees]] in [[Valinor]], as Melkor's lies were taking their place in Noldor's minds, people started thinking that the [[Valar]] were holding them back from going back to [[Cuiviénen]]. Fëanor was the first to speak against the Valar, and [[Finwë]] summoned all of the lords of his house to resolve the issue. As Fingolfin was contending with his father to restrain Fëanor, the latter arrived fully armed with weapons he had secretly forged. Even though Fingolfin accepted him as the older one, Fëanor threatened Fingolfin, who was unarmed, with his sword, after which Fingolfin bowed to Finwë and left, only to be followed by Fëanor and threatened again in public.

After King Finwë died, Fëanor rallied up the Noldor and gave an impassionate speech. Nearly all of the Noldor followed him, along with his two half-brothers. Fingolfin led the largest host of the Ñoldor when they fled [[Aman]] for [[Middle-earth]], even though he thought this unwise; he did not want to abandon his people to Fëanor. As days passed in their exile, more and more of the Noldor started speaking against Fëanor, for their journey was uneasy, and they feared the prophecy of [[Mandos]]. After Noldor acquired the ships of [[Teleri]] following the [[First Kinslaying]], followers of Fëanor were the first to use them to get across the sea. Fëanor burned the ships after reaching Middle-earth, for he thought the followers of Fingolfin would prove to be useless.

Fingolfin and his people saw the smoke of the ships from afar, and chose to travel through the ice desert, for they were ashamed to go back to Valinor, and were angry at Fëanor. Shortly after Fëanor's death, his oldest son Maedhros was captured by Morgoth. Learning this, Fingolfin's oldest son [[Fingon]] rescued [[Maedhros]], with whom he was a good friend. Maedhros consequently waived his claim to kingship. Thus Fingolfin became High-King of the [[Noldor]]. He ruled from [[Hithlum]], by the northern shores of [[Lake Mithrim]].

After defeating the [[Orcs]] in the [[Dagor Aglareb]] ("Glorious Battle"), Fingolfin maintained the [[Siege of Angband]] for nearly four hundred years. But the Siege was ended by the sudden assaults of Morgoth in the [[Dagor Bragollach]] ("Battle of Sudden Flame"), and many peoples of Beleriand fled. In the end Fingolfin rode to Angband alone to challenge Morgoth to single combat. He rode so fast that those who saw him thought Oromë himself had arrived. Morgoth's wounds never healed after that battle, and he limped everafter. Curufin was born in [[Tirion]] during the [[Years of the Trees]] and he
received the name '''[[Curufinwë]]''' ([[Quenya|Q]], pron. {{IPA|[ˌkuruˈfinwe]}}), same as his father. Because his father, uncles and brothers also all had father-names that ended with ''-[[finwë]]'', Curufin was called '''Curvo''' (Q, pron. {{IPA|[ˈkurvo]}}) by his family. His [[Amilessë|mother-name]] was '''Atarinkë''' (Q, pron. {{IPA|[ˌataˈriŋke]}}). While in [[Valinor]], he married at some point, and had a son named [[Celebrimbor]]. But Celebrimbor was unlike his father, and later on he came to dislike his deviousness and dealings with the other Noldor.

As with the other sons of Fëanor, Curufin bound himself by an [[Oath of Fëanor|oath]] to recover his father's [[Silmarils]], which had been stolen by the Dark Lord [[Morgoth]]. The Oath took him and his brothers to [[Endor]] during the [[First Age]] where they established realms in exile, waged war against the armies of Morgoth, fought their own Elvish kind, and eventually brought ruin upon themselves.

====Life in Beleriand====
Curufin dwelt with his brother [[Celegorm]] in [[Himlad]], a pass that led into Kingdom of [[Doriath]], which the two brothers fortified and held until the [[Dagor Bragollach]]. Following the battle, the two brothers were defeated and had to flee with their people to [[Nargothrond]], where their cousin [[Finrod]] welcomed them.

Shortly after, [[Beren]] also came to Nargothrond to collect on an oath Finrod had made to his ancestor. Finrod decided to help Beren, but Celegorm and Curufin, remembering their own oath, persuaded the people of Nargothrond not to follow him, and not to wage open war against Morgoth, making them fearful.

Finrod therefore had to leave with a handful of warriors, including Beren, and later died. His nephew [[Orodreth]] was made to rule in his stead.

====The Attack upon Beren====
Later, Curufin and Celegorm went hunting with Celegorm's hound [[Huan]] and found [[Lúthien]], daughter of [[Thingol]], searching for Beren. Feigning to help her, they took her captive and brought her to Nargothrond, for Celegorm had become enamored and would have Thingol give him her hand. However Huan helped Lúthien to flee, and they freed Beren and other thralls from [[Sauron]]. As these thralls returned, the people of Nargothrond perceived the two brother's treachery, and though Orodreth would not let them be slain, he cast them from Nargothrond.

The two brothers met Lúthien and Beren as they fled, and Curufin fought with the latter. Defeated, he had to flee with Celegorm, but sought to slay Lúthien even as he did, and shot Beren instead.

Because of Celegorm and Curufin's evil deeds, Thingol and Orodreth would not join the [[Union of Maedhros]] against Morgoth.

====Death====
Curufin fell in the [[Second Kinslaying]], when the Sons of Fëanor attacked Doriath to seize a Silmaril in the possession of the King [[Dior]] the Beautiful. Celegorm and Caranthir died with him during the assault.

Curufin's [[father-name]] was ''[[Curufinwë]]'' ("Skillful [son of] [[Finwë]]"), the same father-name given to Fëanor. Because Curufin was Fëanor's favorite son, he chose to give him the same name. As the other [[Sons of Fëanor]], Caranthir was bound by an [[Oath of Fëanor|oath]] to recover his father's [[Silmarils]], which had been stolen by the Dark Lord [[Morgoth]]. This oath took the seven brothers to [[Middle-earth]] during the [[First Age]], where they established realms in exile, waged war against the armies of Morgoth, fought their own [[Elvish]] kind, and eventually brought ruin upon themselves.

Caranthir's realm was in [[Thargelion]], and was sometimes called ''[[Dor Caranthir]]'' ("Caranthir's Land"). His abode was on the shores of [[Helevorn|Lake Helevorn]].

In First Age c. 420, Caranthir rescued [[Haleth]] and her people, the [[Haladin]], as they were besieged by [[Orcs]]. When he saw the valor of [[Men]], he offered the Haladin a fiefdom in his lands to the North. However Haleth, wanting her people to serve no lord, thanked him but removed to the [[Forest of Brethil]].

In 463, the [[Easterlings|Easterling]] [[Ulfang]] led his people over the [[Blue Mountains]] and swore allegiance to [[Maedhros]]. They were given land in [[Lothlann]] and became subjects of Caranthir.

In 472, the disaster of the [[Nirnaeth Arnoediad]] ("Battle of Unnumbered Tears") occurred, caused by the betrayal of the people of Ulfang. Caranthir lost his realm and was forced to retreat to [[Mount Dolmed]] with his surviving brothers.

In 505, he perished along with his brothers [[Celegorm]] and [[Curufin]] during the [[Second Kinslaying]], the attack by the Sons of Fëanor on [[Menegroth]] to recover a Silmaril from King [[Dior|Dior Eluchíl]] of [[Doriath]].

Celegorm was a great huntsman, and was a friend of the [[Valar|Vala]] [[Oromë]]. From Oromë he learned great skill of birds and beasts, and could understand a number of their languages. He had brought with him from [[Valinor]] the great hound [[Huan]], a gift from Oromë.

As with the other [[Sons of Fëanor]], Celegorm was bound by an [[Oath of Fëanor|oath]] to recover his father's [[Silmarils]], which had been stolen by the Dark Lord [[Morgoth]]. His oath took him and his brothers to Middle-earth during the First Age where they established realms in exile, waged war against the armies of Morgoth, fought their own Elvish kind, and eventually brought ruin upon themselves.

He dwelt with his brother Curufin in [[Himlad]], a pass that led into Kingdom of [[Doriath]], which the two brothers fortified and held until the [[Dagor Bragollach]]. Following the battle, the two brothers were defeated and had to flee with their people to [[Nargothrond]], where their cousin [[Finrod|Finrod Felagund]] welcomed them.

While he and his brother Curufin lived in Nargothrond they almost took it over at the departure of Finrod Felagund. They both had great influence, for both were great orators. They captured [[Lúthien|Lúthien Tinúviel]], daughter of King [[Thingol]] of Doriath. Celegorm wished to marry her, thus forcing a bond of kinship with Thingol. Huan, however, broke with his master and helped Lúthien escape. He was expelled from Nargothrond at the order of [[Orodreth]].

Celegorm fell in the [[Second Kinslaying]], when the [[Sons of Fëanor]] attacked Doriath to seize a Silmaril in the possession of the Elvish King [[Dior|Dior Eluchíl]]. Dior and Celegorm slew each other in the halls of [[Menegroth]].

Maglor was present at the [[Kinslaying at Alqualondë]]. To what degree he participated in the slaughter is unknown but later he composed the lament ''[[Noldolantë]]'', the Fall of the the [[Noldor]], in memory of the terrible event.<ref name="Flight"/> Following [[Fëanor]] into exile, Maglor witnessed his father die after he had fought [[Gothmog (balrog)|Gothmog]].<ref>{{S|Return}}</ref>

The sons of Fëanor settled in the eastern part of [[Beleriand]]. Maglor's ward was the opening in the hills between the two arms of the [[Gelion]] River which acquired the name of '''[[Maglor's Gap]]'''. Due to the lack of hills the Gap was a natural route for attacks from the north and the Noldor kept a strength of cavalry in that region.<ref>{{S|Beleriand}}</ref>

Maglor's Gap was held for four and a half centuries. However, in the [[Dagor Bragollach]] the [[Dragons|dragon]] [[Glaurung]] invaded and laid waste to Maglor's land, forcing Maglor to flee to the fortress of his brother [[Maedhros]] on the hill of [[Himring]] to the west.<ref>{{S|Fingolfin}}</ref> Sixteen years later, he and Maedhros marched to the great battle that the [[Elves]] hoped would see their revenge upon [[Morgoth]], but they were defeated, partly by the treachery of [[Uldor the Accursed]]. Eventually the three brothers heard tiding that [[Elwing]] possessed a Silmaril and dwelt at the [[Mouths of Sirion]]. However they were again thwarted for Elwing escaped with the Silmaril across the [[Belegaer|Sea]] to her husband [[Eärendil]]. After Morgoth's fall the last two Silmarils were recovered from his Crown. By this time, only Maedhros and Maglor remained of Fëanor's sons. In weariness and loathing they demanded the jewels from [[Eönwë]], the herald of [[Manwë]]. Eönwë refused them the Silmarils due to their many evil deeds. Still driven, the two brothers crept into the camp of Eönwë and stole the jewels. Though they were caught Eönwë let them depart. Maedhros and Maglor each took one jewel but their evil deeds caused the holy Jewels to burn their skin. Maedhros in despair cast himself into a fiery fissure. Maglor, the last surviving son of Fëanor, threw his Silmaril into the Sea. ==History==
After the banishment of [[Fëanor]] from [[Tirion]] in [[Valinor]] he went with his father to [[Formenos]]. When [[Morgoth]] killed Finwë and stole Fëanor's beloved [[Silmarils]], Maedhros was the first son to take the terrible [[Oath of Fëanor]] to recover the jewels.

The Oath took Maedhros, his father and his brothers to Middle-earth during the First Age where they established realms in exile, waged war against the armies of Morgoth, fought their own [[Elvish]] kind, and eventually brought ruin upon their House.

Shortly after the [[Dagor-nuin-Giliath]] in which Fëanor was killed, Maedhros was captured by Morgoth and hung by the wrist of his right hand upon the face of a precipice of [[Thangorodrim]]. In a daring rescue, his cousin [[Fingon]], helped by [[Thorondor]] the King of Eagles, saved him from torment but he had to cut off Maedhros's hand to release him from the shackle. In gratitude for this, and in atonement for Fëanor's desertion of Fingon's house, Maedhros relinquished all claim as the heir of Finwë and made his uncle [[Fingolfin]], Fingon's father, [[High King of the Noldor]], something his brothers did not like.

Seeing that his brothers were likely to cause feuds with their kinsmen, Maedhros moved them out of [[Hithlum]], and later ruled the lands around the [[Hill of Himring]], which became known as the [[March of Maedhros]]. Allied with Fingolfin, he won the battle of [[Dagor Aglareb]], and, thanks to his daring deeds during the [[Dagor Bragollach]], [[Himring]] stood while many other elven realms fell.

Hearing words of deeds of [[Beren]] and [[Lúthien]], he took hope and gathered his brothers and united with other Elven Houses to create the [[Union of Maedhros]], an alliance to lay siege to Morgoth's fortress of [[Angband]]. The Union and the siege was utterly broken after the defeat in the [[Nirnaeth Arnoediad]]. Himring was garrisoned by [[Orcs]].

Maedhros had learned that [[Elwing]] of [[Doriath]], granddaughter of Lúthien and Beren, had inherited the Silmaril that they had recovered from Morgoth. Still driven by the Oath, he allowed his brother [[Celegorm]] to convince him to attack Doriath. Celegorm, [[Caranthir]], and [[Curufin]] were slain by Beren's son, [[Dior|Dior Eluchíl]], the King of Doriath, who was in-turn slain by them. Dior's sons, [[Eluréd]] and [[Elurín]], were captured and abandoned by Celegorm's servants in the forest, leading Maedhros to search for the innocent youths. After learning that Elwing had survived, he and his surviving brothers descended with an army upon the remnants of the people of Doriath living in the [[Havens of Sirion]]. The Noldorin princes killed many Elves and captured Elwing's sons [[Elrond]] and [[Elros]] in the sack, but she and her husband [[Eärendil]] escaped to the [[Aman|West]] with the jewel.

But because of the evil deeds committed by the brothers to regain the jewels, they burned in Maglor's and Maedhros's hands. }} '''Amras''' and his twin brother [[Amrod]] were the youngest sons of [[Fëanor]]. Through their mother [[Nerdanel]] they inherited red hair (probably a dark red), instead of Fëanor's black.

==History==

He joined his brothers in the [[Oath of Fëanor]], but his mother Nerdanel begged that either he or Amrod be left behind, believing in her heart that one would not return. Fëanor, however, refused her this kindness, and paid for it. Amras was accidentally killed in the swan ships of the [[Teleri]] when his father ordered them to be burnt at [[Losgar]]. According to the ''[[Shibboleth]]'', he claimed (to Amrod) to have felt uncomfortable sleeping on the ground after the Noldor landed on the [[Lammoth]]. It was thought later that he wished to return to his mother in the ship, being shocked by his father's deeds. Fëanor was probably aware of his dissention, and this may have been one of the elements of his decision to burn the ships even before all the food and stores had been got out. Yet he was in great dismay when he learned of his son's death, and doubtless remembered the foreboding words of his wife.

==Other versions of the Legendarium==

In the published ''[[The Silmarillion]]'' and in earlier texts he is said to have lived on to [[Beleriand]] and ruled with his twin Amrod over lands west of the [[Blue Mountains]]. Even in ''The Silmarillion'' his life, course and death happen alongside to his brother's and has not an individual role.

== Etymology ==
Amras' [[father-name]] in [[Quenya]] was '''[[Telufinwë]]''', "Last [of] Finwë", for he was the last of the sons of the [[House of Finwë]] and its short form was ''Telvo''. His [[Amilessë|mother-name]] was originally '''[[Ambarussa]]''' ("Top-russet", referring to his hair), the same as his twin Amrod, but Fëanor insisted that the twins ought to have different names and Nerdanel prophetically called him '''[[Umbarto]]''', "The Fated" (from ''[[umbar]]'' = "fate"). His father, disturbed by it, changed it to '''[[Ambarto]]''', "Upwards-exalted" (from ''[[amba]]'' = "upwards, top" and ''[[arta]]'' = "exalted", "lofty"). Nevertheless both twins called each other ''Ambarussa''.

The name ''Amras'' is the Sindarin version of ''Ambarussa''.

In later notes found in ''[[The Peoples of Middle-earth]]'', Tolkien mentions that he wished to change the name to ''[[Amros]]'' because of linguistic issues. While this occured late in life, and there are no known manuscripts written later that contradict this, its canonicity is in dispute.

== Other Versions of the Legendarium ==
There is no trace of the death of Amras at Losgar in the published ''[[The Silmarillion]]'', as it was a very late idea by [[J.R.R. Tolkien|Tolkien]], omitted by [[Christopher Tolkien]] as he did not at the time see how it could be incorporated into the primary text of ''The Silmarillion''. Where both Amrod and Amras are mentioned in the published text after the landing in Losgar, it should according to Tolkien's later wishes be Amrod alone. The information regarding Amras' naming, especially, comes from ''[[The Peoples of Middle-earth]]''.
